37 Jacob demeura dans le pays de Canaan, où avait séjourné son père.
2 Voici la postérité de Jacob. Joseph, âgé de dix-sept ans, faisait paître le troupeau avec ses frères; cet enfant était auprès des fils de Bilha et des fils de Zilpa, femmes de son père. Et Joseph rapportait à leur père leurs mauvais propos.
3 Israël aimait Joseph plus que tous ses autres fils, parce qu'il l'avait eu dans sa vieillesse; et il lui fit une tunique de plusieurs couleurs.
4 Ses frères virent que leur père l'aimait plus qu'eux tous, et ils le prirent en haine. Ils ne pouvaient lui parler avec amitié.
5 Joseph eut un songe, et il le raconta à ses frères, qui le haïrent encore davantage.
6 Il leur dit: Écoutez donc ce songe que j'ai eu!
7 Nous étions à lier des gerbes au milieu des champs; et voici, ma gerbe se leva et se tint debout, et vos gerbes l'entourèrent et se prosternèrent devant elle.
8 Ses frères lui dirent: Est-ce que tu régneras sur nous? est-ce que tu nous gouverneras? Et ils le haïrent encore davantage, à cause de ses songes et à cause de ses paroles.
9 Il eut encore un autre songe, et il le raconta à ses frères. Il dit: J'ai eu encore un songe! Et voici, le soleil, la lune et onze étoiles se prosternaient devant moi.
10 Il le raconta à son père et à ses frères. Son père le réprimanda, et lui dit: Que signifie ce songe que tu as eu? Faut-il que nous venions, moi, ta mère et tes frères, nous prosterner en terre devant toi?
11 Ses frères eurent de l'envie contre lui, mais son père garda le souvenir de ces choses.
12 Les frères de Joseph étant allés à Sichem, pour faire paître le troupeau de leur père,
13 Israël dit à Joseph: Tes frères ne font-ils pas paître le troupeau à Sichem? Viens, je veux t'envoyer vers eux. Et il répondit: Me voici!
14 Israël lui dit: Va, je te prie, et vois si tes frères sont en bonne santé et si le troupeau est en bon état; et tu m'en rapporteras des nouvelles. Il l'envoya ainsi de la vallée d'Hébron; et Joseph alla à Sichem.
15 Un homme le rencontra, comme il errait dans les champs. Il le questionna, en disant: Que cherches-tu?
16 Joseph répondit: Je cherche mes frères; dis-moi, je te prie, où ils font paître leur troupeau.
17 Et l'homme dit: Ils sont partis d'ici; car je les ai entendus dire: Allons à Dothan. Joseph alla après ses frères, et il les trouva à Dothan.
18 Ils le virent de loin; et, avant qu'il fût près d'eux, ils complotèrent de le faire mourir.
19 Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Voici le faiseur de songes qui arrive.
20 Venez maintenant, tuons-le, et jetons-le dans une des citernes; nous dirons qu'une bête féroce l'a dévoré, et nous verrons ce que deviendront ses songes.
21 Ruben entendit cela, et il le délivra de leurs mains. Il dit: Ne lui ôtons pas la vie.
22 Ruben leur dit: Ne répandez point de sang; jetez-le dans cette citerne qui est au désert, et ne mettez pas la main sur lui. Il avait dessein de le délivrer de leurs mains pour le faire retourner vers son père.
23 Lorsque Joseph fut arrivé auprès de ses frères, ils le dépouillèrent de sa tunique, de la tunique de plusieurs couleurs, qu'il avait sur lui.
24 Ils le prirent, et le jetèrent dans la citerne. Cette citerne était vide; il n'y avait point d'eau.
25 Ils s'assirent ensuite pour manger. Ayant levé les yeux, ils virent une caravane d'Ismaélites venant de Galaad; leurs chameaux étaient chargés d'aromates, de baume et de myrrhe, qu'ils transportaient en Égypte.
26 Alors Juda dit à ses frères: Que gagnerons-nous à tuer notre frère et à cacher son sang?
27 Venez, vendons-le aux Ismaélites, et ne mettons pas la main sur lui, car il est notre frère, notre chair. Et ses frères l'écoutèrent.
28 Au passage des marchands madianites, ils tirèrent et firent remonter Joseph hors de la citerne; et ils le vendirent pour vingt sicles d'argent aux Ismaélites, qui l'emmenèrent en Égypte.
29 Ruben revint à la citerne; et voici, Joseph n'était plus dans la citerne. Il déchira ses vêtements,
30 retourna vers ses frères, et dit: L'enfant n'y est plus! Et moi, où irai-je?
31 Ils prirent alors la tunique de Joseph; et, ayant tué un bouc, ils plongèrent la tunique dans le sang.
32 Ils envoyèrent à leur père la tunique de plusieurs couleurs, en lui faisant dire: Voici ce que nous avons trouvé! reconnais si c'est la tunique de ton fils, ou non.
33 Jacob la reconnut, et dit: C'est la tunique de mon fils! une bête féroce l'a dévoré! Joseph a été mis en pièces!
34 Et il déchira ses vêtements, il mit un sac sur ses reins, et il porta longtemps le deuil de son fils.
35 Tous ses fils et toutes ses filles vinrent pour le consoler; mais il ne voulut recevoir aucune consolation. Il disait: C'est en pleurant que je descendrai vers mon fils au séjour des morts! Et il pleurait son fils.
36 Les Madianites le vendirent en Égypte à Potiphar, officier de Pharaon, chef des gardes.

37 Men Jakob bosatte sig i det land där hans fader hade bott såsom främling, nämligen i Kanaans land.
2 Detta är berättelsen om Jakobs släkt. När Josef var sjutton år gammal, gick han, jämte sina bröder, i vall med fåren; han följde då såsom yngling med Bilhas och Silpas, sin faders hustrurs, söner. Och Josef bar fram till deras fader vad ont som sades om dem.
3 Men Israel hade Josef kärare än alla sina andra söner, eftersom han hade fött honom på sin ålderdom; och han lät göra åt honom en fotsid livklädnad.
4 Då nu hans bröder sågo att deras fader hade honom kärare än alla hans bröder, blevo de hätska mot honom och kunde icke tala vänligt till honom.
5 Därtill hade Josef en gång en dröm, som han omtalade för sina bröder; sedan hatade de honom ännu mer.
6 Han sade nämligen till dem: »Hören vilken dröm jag har haft.
7 Jag tyckte att vi bundo kärvar på fältet; och se, min kärve reste sig upp och blev stående, och edra kärvar ställde sig runt omkring och bugade sig för min kärve.»
8 Då sade hans bröder till honom: »Skulle du bliva vår konung, och skulle du råda över oss?» Och de hatade honom ännu mer för hans drömmars skull och för vad han hade sagt.
9 Sedan hade han ännu en annan dröm som han förtäljde för sina bröder; han sade: »Hören, jag har haft ännu en dröm. Jag tyckte att solen och månen och elva stjärnor bugade sig för mig.»
10 När han förtäljde detta för sin fader och sina bröder, bannade hans fader honom och sade till honom: »Vad är detta för en dröm som du har haft? Skulle då jag och din moder och dina bröder komma och buga oss ned till jorden för dig?»
11 Och hans bröder avundades honom; men hans fader bevarade detta i sitt minne.
12 Då nu en gång hans bröder hade gått bort för att vakta sin faders får i Sikem,
13 sade Israel till Josef: »Se, dina bröder vakta fåren i Sikem; gör dig redo, jag vill sända dig till dem.» Han svarade honom: »Jag är redo.»
14 Då sade han till honom: »Gå och se efter, om det står väl till med dina bröder, och om det står väl till med fåren, och kom tillbaka till mig med svar.» Så sände han honom åstad från Hebrons dal, och han kom till Sikem.
15 Där mötte han en man, medan han gick omkring villrådig på fältet; och mannen frågade honom: »Vad söker du?»
16 Han svarade: »Jag söker efter mina bröder; säg mig var de vakta sin hjord.»
17 Mannen svarade: »De hava brutit upp härifrån; ty jag hörde dem säga: 'Låt oss gå till Dotain.'» Då gick Josef vidare efter sina bröder och fann dem i Dotan.
18 När de nu på avstånd fingo se honom, innan han ännu hade hunnit fram till dem, lade de råd om att döda honom.
19 De sade till varandra: »Se, där kommer drömmaren.
20 Upp, låt oss dräpa honom och kasta honom i en brunn; sedan kunna vi säga att ett vilddjur har ätit upp honom. Så få vi se huru det går med hans drömmar.»
21 Men när Ruben hörde detta, ville han rädda honom undan deras händer och sade: »Låt oss icke slå ihjäl honom.»
22 Ytterligare sade Ruben till dem: »Utgjuten icke blod; kasten honom i brunnen här i öknen, men bären icke hand på honom.» Han ville nämligen rädda honom undan deras händer och föra honom tillbaka till hans fader.
23 Då nu Josef kom fram till sina bröder, togo de av honom hans livklädnad, den fotsida klädnaden som han hade på sig,
24 och grepo honom och kastade honom i brunnen; men brunnen var tom, intet vatten fanns däri.
25 Därefter satte de sig ned för att äta. När de då lyfte upp sina ögon, fingo de se ett tåg av ismaeliter komma från Gilead, och deras kameler voro lastade med dragantgummi, balsam och ladanum; de voro på väg med detta ned till Egypten.
26 Då sade Juda till sina bröder: »Vad gagn hava vi därav att vi dräpa vår broder och dölja hans blod?»
27 Nej, låt oss sälja honom till ismaeliterna; må vår hand icke komma vid honom, ty han är ju vår broder, vårt eget kött.» Och hans bröder lydde honom.
28 Då nu midjanitiska köpmän kommo där förbi, drogo de upp Josef ur brunnen; och de sålde Josef för tjugu siklar silver till ismaeliterna. Dessa förde så Josef till Egypten.
29 När sedan Ruben kom tillbaka till brunnen, se, då fanns Josef icke i brunnen. Då rev han sönder sina kläder
30 och vände tillbaka till sina bröder och sade: »Gossen är icke där, vart skall jag nu taga vägen?»
31 Men de togo Josefs livklädnad och slaktade en bock och doppade klädnaden i blodet;
32 därefter sände de den fotsida livklädnaden hem till sin fader och läto säga: »Denna har vi funnit; se efter, om det är din sons livklädnad eller icke.»
33 Och han kände igen den och sade: »Det är min sons livklädnad; ett vilddjur har ätit upp honom, förvisso är Josef ihjälriven.»
34 Och Jakob rev sönder sina kläder och svepte säcktyg om sina länder och sörjde sin son i lång tid.
35 Och alla hans söner och alla hans döttrar kommo för att trösta honom; men han ville icke låta trösta sig, utan sade: »Jag skall med sorg fara ned i dödsriket till min son.» Så begrät hans fader honom.
36 Men medaniterna förde honom till Egypten och sålde honom till Potifar, som var hovman hos Farao och hövitsman för drabanterna.

Joseph’s Dreams
37 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed,(A) the land of Canaan.(B)
2 This is the account(C) of Jacob’s family line.
Joseph,(D) a young man of seventeen,(E) was tending the flocks(F) with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah(G) and the sons of Zilpah,(H) his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report(I) about them.
3 Now Israel(J) loved Joseph more than any of his other sons,(K) because he had been born to him in his old age;(L) and he made an ornate[a] robe(M) for him.(N) 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him(O) and could not speak a kind word to him.
5 Joseph had a dream,(P) and when he told it to his brothers,(Q) they hated him all the more.(R) 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves(S) of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”(T)
8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?”(U) And they hated him all the more(V) because of his dream and what he had said.
9 Then he had another dream,(W) and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars(X) were bowing down to me.”(Y)
10 When he told his father as well as his brothers,(Z) his father rebuked(AA) him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”(AB) 11 His brothers were jealous of him,(AC) but his father kept the matter in mind.(AD)
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,(AE) 13 and Israel(AF) said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem.(AG) Come, I am going to send you to them.”
“Very well,” he replied.
14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers(AH) and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.(AI)
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”
17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.(AJ)’”
So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.(AK)
19 “Here comes that dreamer!(AL)” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns(AM) and say that a ferocious animal(AN) devoured him.(AO) Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”(AP)
21 When Reuben(AQ) heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.(AR) 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern(AS) here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.(AT)
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe(AU) he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern.(AV) The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites(AW) coming from Gilead.(AX) Their camels were loaded with spices, balm(AY) and myrrh,(AZ) and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.(BA)
26 Judah(BB) said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?(BC) 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother,(BD) our own flesh and blood.(BE)” His brothers agreed.
28 So when the Midianite(BF) merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern(BG) and sold(BH) him for twenty shekels[b] of silver(BI) to the Ishmaelites,(BJ) who took him to Egypt.(BK)
29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.(BL) 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”(BM)
31 Then they got Joseph’s robe,(BN) slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.(BO) 32 They took the ornate robe(BP) back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”
33 He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal(BQ) has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”(BR)
34 Then Jacob tore his clothes,(BS) put on sackcloth(BT) and mourned for his son many days.(BU) 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him,(BV) but he refused to be comforted.(BW) “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son(BX) in the grave.(BY)” So his father wept for him.
36 Meanwhile, the Midianites[c](BZ) sold Joseph(CA) in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.(CB)
