28 Isaac appela Jacob, le bénit, et lui donna cet ordre: Tu ne prendras pas une femme parmi les filles de Canaan.
2 Lève-toi, va à Paddan Aram, à la maison de Bethuel, père de ta mère, et prends-y une femme d'entre les filles de Laban, frère de ta mère.
3 Que le Dieu tout puissant te bénisse, te rende fécond et te multiplie, afin que tu deviennes une multitude de peuples!
4 Qu'il te donne la bénédiction d'Abraham, à toi et à ta postérité avec toi, afin que tu possèdes le pays où tu habites comme étranger, et qu'il a donné à Abraham!
5 Et Isaac fit partir Jacob, qui s'en alla à Paddan Aram, auprès de Laban, fils de Bethuel, l'Araméen, frère de Rebecca, mère de Jacob et d'Ésaü.
6 Ésaü vit qu'Isaac avait béni Jacob, et qu'il l'avait envoyé à Paddan Aram pour y prendre une femme, et qu'en le bénissant il lui avait donné cet ordre: Tu ne prendras pas une femme parmi les filles de Canaan.
7 Il vit que Jacob avait obéi à son père et à sa mère, et qu'il était parti pour Paddan Aram.
8 Ésaü comprit ainsi que les filles de Canaan déplaisaient à Isaac, son père.
9 Et Ésaü s'en alla vers Ismaël. Il prit pour femme, outre les femmes qu'il avait, Mahalath, fille d'Ismaël, fils d'Abraham, et soeur de Nebajoth.
10 Jacob partit de Beer Schéba, et s'en alla à Charan.
11 Il arriva dans un lieu où il passa la nuit; car le soleil était couché. Il y prit une pierre, dont il fit son chevet, et il se coucha dans ce lieu-là.
12 Il eut un songe. Et voici, une échelle était appuyée sur la terre, et son sommet touchait au ciel. Et voici, les anges de Dieu montaient et descendaient par cette échelle.
13 Et voici, l'Éternel se tenait au-dessus d'elle; et il dit: Je suis l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Abraham, ton père, et le Dieu d'Isaac. La terre sur laquelle tu es couché, je la donnerai à toi et à ta postérité.
14 Ta postérité sera comme la poussière de la terre; tu t'étendras à l'occident et à l'orient, au septentrion et au midi; et toutes les familles de la terre seront bénies en toi et en ta postérité.
15 Voici, je suis avec toi, je te garderai partout où tu iras, et je te ramènerai dans ce pays; car je ne t'abandonnerai point, que je n'aie exécuté ce que je te dis.
16 Jacob s'éveilla de son sommeil et il dit: Certainement, l'Éternel est en ce lieu, et moi, je ne le savais pas!
17 Il eut peur, et dit: Que ce lieu est redoutable! C'est ici la maison de Dieu, c'est ici la porte des cieux!
18 Et Jacob se leva de bon matin; il prit la pierre dont il avait fait son chevet, il la dressa pour monument, et il versa de l'huile sur son sommet.
19 Il donna à ce lieu le nom de Béthel; mais la ville s'appelait auparavant Luz.
20 Jacob fit un voeu, en disant: Si Dieu est avec moi et me garde pendant ce voyage que je fais, s'il me donne du pain à manger et des habits pour me vêtir,
21 et si je retourne en paix à la maison de mon père, alors l'Éternel sera mon Dieu;
22 cette pierre, que j'ai dressée pour monument, sera la maison de Dieu; et je te donnerai la dîme de tout ce que tu me donneras.

28 Da kaldte Isak Jakob til sig og velsignede ham, idet han bød ham: "Du må ikke tage dig en Hustru blandt Kana'ans Døtre. 2 Drag til Paddan-Aram, til din Morfader Betuels Hus, og tag dig der en af din Morbroder Labans Døtre til Hustru! 3 Gud den Almægtige velsigne dig og gøre dig frugtbar og give dig et talrigt Afkom, så du bliver til Stammer i Hobetal. 4 Han give dig og dit Afkom med dig Abrahams Velsignelse, så du får din Udlændigheds Land i Eje, det,Gud skænkede Abraham!" 5 Så lod Isak Jakob fare, og han drog til Paddan-Aram, til Aramæeren Laban, Betuels Søn, som var Broder til Rebekka, Jakobs og Esaus Moder.
6 Men Esau fik at vide, at Isak havde velsignet Jakob og sendt ham til Paddan-Aram for at tage sig en Hustru der, og at han, da han velsignede ham, havde pålagt ham ikke at tage sig en Hustru blandt Kana'ans Døtre, 7 og at Jakob havde adlydt sin Fader og Moder og var draget til Paddan-Aram. 8 Da skønnede Esau, at Kana'aos Døtre vakte hans Fader Isaks Mishag, 9 og han gik til Ismael og tog Mahalat, en Datter af Abrahams Søn Ismael og Søster til Nebajot, til Hustru ved Siden af sine andre Hustruer.
10 Så drog Jakob bort fra Be'ersjeba og vandrede ad Karan til. 11 På sin Vandring kom han til det hellige Sted og overnattede der, da Solen var gået ned; og han tog en af Stenene på Stedet og brugte den som Hovedgærde og lagde sig til, Hvile der. 12 Da drømte han, og se, på Jorden stod en Stige, hvis Top nåede til Himmelen, og se, Guds Engle steg op og ned ad den; 13 og Herren stod foran ham og sagde: "Jeg er Herren, din Fader Abrahams og Isaks Gud! Det Land, du hviler på, giver jeg dig og dit Afkom; 14 dit Afkom skal blive som Jordens Støv, og du skal brede dig mod Vest og Øst, mod Nord og Syd; og i dig og i din Sæd skal alle Jordens Slægter velsignes; 15 se, jeg vil være med dig og vogte dig, hvorhen du end går og føre dig tilbage til dette Land; thi jeg vil ikke forlade dig, men opfylde alt, hvad jeg har lovet dig!" 16 Da Jakob vågnede af sin Søvn, sagde han: "Sandelig, Herren er på dette Sted, og jeg vidste det ikke!" 17 Og han blev angst og sagde: "Hvor forfærdeligt er dog dette Sted! Visselig, her er Guds Hus, her er Himmelens Port!" 18 Tidligt næste Morgen tog Jakob den Sten, han havde brugt som Hovedgærde rejste den som en Stenstøtte og gød Olie over den. 19 Og han kaldte dette Sted Betel; før hed Byen Luz.
20 Derpå gjorde Jakob følgende Løfte: "Hvis Gud er med mig og vogter mig på den Vej, jeg skal vandre, og giver mig Brød at spise og Klæder at iføre mig, 21 og hvis jeg kommer uskadt tilbage til min Faders Hus, så skal Herren være min Gud, 22 og denne Sten, som jeg har rejst som en Støtte, skal være Guds Hus, og af alt, hvad du giver mig, vil jeg give dig Tiende!"

28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(A) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(B) 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram,[a](C) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(D) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(E) 3 May God Almighty[b](F) bless(G) you and make you fruitful(H) and increase your numbers(I) until you become a community of peoples. 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(J) so that you may take possession of the land(K) where you now reside as a foreigner,(L) the land God gave to Abraham.” 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way,(M) and he went to Paddan Aram,(N) to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean,(O) the brother of Rebekah,(P) who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”(Q) 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women(R) were to his father Isaac;(S) 9 so he went to Ishmael(T) and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth(U) and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.(V)
Jacob’s Dream at Bethel
10 Jacob left Beersheba(W) and set out for Harran.(X) 11 When he reached a certain place,(Y) he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head(Z) and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream(AA) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(AB) 13 There above it[c] stood the Lord,(AC) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(AD) I will give you and your descendants the land(AE) on which you are lying.(AF) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(AG) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(AH) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[d](AI) 15 I am with you(AJ) and will watch over you(AK) wherever you go,(AL) and I will bring you back to this land.(AM) I will not leave you(AN) until I have done what I have promised you.(AO)”(AP)
16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(AQ) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(AR) This is none other than the house of God;(AS) this is the gate of heaven.”
18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head(AT) and set it up as a pillar(AU) and poured oil on top of it.(AV) 19 He called that place Bethel,[e](AW) though the city used to be called Luz.(AX)
20 Then Jacob made a vow,(AY) saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me(AZ) on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear(BA) 21 so that I return safely(BB) to my father’s household,(BC) then the Lord[f] will be my God(BD) 22 and[g] this stone that I have set up as a pillar(BE) will be God’s house,(BF) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.(BG)”
