¹⁹ “For through the law I died to the law^(A) so that I might live for God.^(B)

⁴ So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law^(A) through the body of Christ,^(B) that you might belong to another,^(C) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.

¹¹ In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin^(A) but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

² By no means! We are those who have died to sin;^(A) how can we live in it any longer?

¹⁵ And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves^(A) but for him who died for them^(B) and was raised again.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says,^(A) it says to those who are under the law,^(B) so that every mouth may be silenced^(C) and the whole world held accountable to God.^{(D) 20} Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;^(E) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.^(F)

¹⁰ He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.^(A)

⁷ For none of us lives for ourselves alone,^(A) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. ⁸ If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.^(B)

⁶ But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law^(A) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.^(B)

The Law and Sin

⁷ What shall we say, then?^(C) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!^(D) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.^(E) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”^{[a](F) 8} But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,^(G) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.^{(H) 9} Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. ¹⁰ I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life^(I) actually brought death. ¹¹ For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,^(J) deceived me,^(K) and through the commandment put me to death.
