Dios castigará a Jerusalén
9 Entonces escuché que Dios gritaba con fuerza: «Ustedes, los que tienen que castigar a Jerusalén, ¡tomen sus armas destructoras y vengan a destruirla!»
2 Por la entrada del norte del templo llegaron seis hombres. Los vi llegar con sus armas y pararse junto al altar de bronce. Entre ellos había un hombre con ropa de lino. Por los utensilios que llevaba a la cintura, se veía que era un escritor. 3 En ese momento el gran esplendor de Dios, que hasta entonces había estado sobre los seres de apariencia extraña, se elevó de allí y fue a detenerse a la entrada del templo.
Dios llamó al escritor 4 y le dio la siguiente orden:
«Ve a recorrer la ciudad de Jerusalén, y pon una marca en la frente de todos los que realmente estén tristes por las acciones tan repugnantes que se cometen en la ciudad».
5-7 A los otros hombres les ordenó:
«Ustedes, sigan al escritor y maten sin ninguna compasión a cualquiera que no tenga la marca en la frente. No se fijen en la edad ni en el sexo. Comiencen aquí, en el templo, y llenen sus patios de cadáveres, ¡no importa que quede sucio y no sirva más para el culto!»
Aquellos hombres lo hicieron así, y comenzaron a matar gente por toda la ciudad. Primero mataron a los jefes de los israelitas, que estaban frente al templo. 8 Mientras mataban a la gente, yo me quedé solo. Entonces me arrodillé hasta tocar el suelo con mi frente, y grité:
—¡Ay, Dios nuestro! ¿Tan enojado estás contra Jerusalén, que vas a acabar con los israelitas que aún quedan vivos?
9 Y Dios me respondió:
—La gente de Israel y de Judá ha pecado mucho. Ellos creen que yo los he abandonado, y que por eso no me fijo en lo que hacen. Han manchado todo el país con la sangre de sus crímenes; han llenado toda la ciudad con sus injusticias. 10 Por eso voy a llamarlos a cuentas; voy a castigarlos sin ninguna compasión.
11 Después de todo esto, el escritor volvió y le informó a Dios: «Ya he cumplido tus órdenes».

9 Then I heard him call out in a loud voice, “Bring near those who are appointed to execute judgment on the city, each with a weapon in his hand.” 2 And I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man clothed in linen(A) who had a writing kit at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.
3 Now the glory(B) of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim,(C) where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple. Then the Lord called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side 4 and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem(D) and put a mark(E) on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament(F) over all the detestable things that are done in it.(G)”
5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity(H) or compassion.(I) 6 Slaughter(J) the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children,(K) but do not touch anyone who has the mark.(L) Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men(M) who were in front of the temple.(N)
7 Then he said to them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain.(O) Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city. 8 While they were killing and I was left alone, I fell facedown,(P) crying out, “Alas, Sovereign Lord!(Q) Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath(R) on Jerusalem?(S)”
9 He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice.(T) They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’(U) 10 So I will not look on them with pity(V) or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.(W)”
11 Then the man in linen with the writing kit at his side brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded.”
