36 »Y tú, hombre, habla en nombre mío a las montañas de Israel, y diles que escuchen mi palabra. 2 Yo, el Señor, digo: Los enemigos de Israel se creen dueños ya de las montañas eternas. 3 Pues bien, habla en mi nombre y diles: “Esto dice el Señor: De todas partes las atacan a ustedes y las destruyen; todos los pueblos extranjeros se han apoderado de ustedes, y la gente las trata con burla y desprecio. 4 Por lo tanto, montañas de Israel, escuchen el mensaje del Señor a las montañas, colinas, ríos y valles; a las ruinas despobladas y a las ciudades desiertas de Israel, que han sido saqueadas por los pueblos vecinos y que han sido objeto de burla por parte de ellos. 5 Esto dice el Señor: Mis palabras van encendidas de enojo contra los otros pueblos, y en especial contra todo Edom, porque con gran alegría se apoderaron de mi tierra y con profundo desprecio saquearon sus campos.”
6 »Habla en mi nombre acerca de la tierra de Israel, y di: “Esto dice el Señor a las montañas, colinas, ríos y valles: Yo tengo palabras de ira y furor, por los insultos que han sufrido ustedes de parte de las naciones extranjeras. 7 Por lo tanto yo, el Señor, juro que los pueblos vecinos de ustedes se verán cubiertos de vergüenza. 8 Ustedes, en cambio, montañas de Israel, estarán cubiertas de árboles grandes y con mucho fruto para mi pueblo Israel, que ya está a punto de regresar. 9 Yo las voy a proteger, y haré que sean cultivadas y sembradas. 10 Haré que aumente mucho el pueblo de Israel que vive allí. Las ciudades se llenarán de habitantes, y las ruinas serán reconstruidas. 11 Haré que aumenten en ustedes los hombres y los animales, y que se hagan muy numerosos. Habrá tantos habitantes como antes, y ustedes estarán mejor que en el pasado. Entonces reconocerán que yo soy el Señor. 12 Haré que mi pueblo camine sobre ustedes, montañas de Israel, y que tomen ellos posesión de ustedes como dueños, y ustedes no volverán a dejarlos sin hijos.
13 »”Yo, el Señor, digo: A ustedes, montañas, las acusan de comerse a la gente y de dejar sin hijos a su pueblo. 14 Pues bien, ustedes no volverán a comerse a la gente ni a dejar sin hijos a su pueblo. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo. 15 No permitiré que oigan de nuevo los insultos de las naciones extranjeras; no recibirán más ofensas de esos pueblos, porque ustedes no volverán a dejar sin hijos a su pueblo. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.”»
16 El Señor se dirigió a mí, y me dijo: 17 «Cuando los israelitas vivían en su tierra, la profanaron con sus malas acciones. Su manera de vivir era para mí algo sucio y repugnante. 18 Entonces descargué mi ira sobre ellos por los asesinatos que cometieron en el país y por la manera en que lo profanaron adorando a los ídolos, 19 y en castigo de sus malas acciones los dispersé entre los demás países y naciones. 20 Pero en todos los pueblos a donde ellos llegaban, ofendían mi santo nombre, pues la gente decía: “Éstos son el pueblo del Señor, pero tuvieron que salir de su país.” 21 Entonces me dolió ver que, por culpa de Israel, mi santo nombre era profanado en cada nación adonde ellos llegaban.
22 »Por eso, dile al pueblo de Israel: “Esto dice el Señor: Lo que voy a realizar no es por causa de ustedes, israelitas, sino por mi santo nombre, que ustedes han ofendido entre las naciones a donde han ido. 23 Yo voy a mostrar ante las naciones la santidad de mi gran nombre, que ustedes han ofendido entre ellas; cuando yo lo haga, ellas reconocerán que yo soy el Señor. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo. 24 Yo los sacaré a ustedes de todas esas naciones y países; los reuniré y los haré volver a su tierra. 25 Los lavaré con agua pura, los limpiaré de todas sus impurezas, los purificaré del contacto con sus ídolos; 26 pondré en ustedes un corazón nuevo y un espíritu nuevo. Quitaré de ustedes ese corazón duro como la piedra y les pondré un corazón dócil. 27 Pondré en ustedes mi espíritu, y haré que cumplan mis leyes y decretos; 28 vivirán en el país que di a sus padres, y serán mi pueblo y yo seré su Dios. 29 Los libraré de todo lo que les manche. Haré que el trigo abunde, y no volveré a enviarles hambre. 30 Haré también que los árboles y los campos den más fruto, para que ustedes no vuelvan a pasar vergüenza delante de las otras naciones por causa del hambre. 31 Y cuando se acuerden de su mala conducta y de sus malas acciones, sentirán vergüenza de ustedes mismos por sus pecados y malas acciones. 32 Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo: Sepan, israelitas, que no hago esto porque ustedes lo merezcan; sientan vergüenza y confusión por su conducta.
33 »”Yo, el Señor, digo: Cuando yo los purifique de todos sus pecados, haré que vivan en sus ciudades y que reconstruyan las ruinas. 34 La tierra que había quedado desierta, en vez de quedar desierta será cultivada a la vista de todos los que pasan. 35 Y se dirá: Esta tierra, que había quedado desierta, ahora se parece al jardín de Edén; las ciudades que habían sido destruidas, arrasadas y dejadas en ruinas, ahora son unas fortalezas y están habitadas. 36 Entonces los pueblos vecinos que queden con vida reconocerán que yo, el Señor, reconstruyo lo destruido y vuelvo a sembrar lo arrasado. Yo, el Señor, lo he dicho, y lo realizaré.
37 »”Yo, el Señor, digo: Aún haré algo más. Concederé al pueblo de Israel lo que me pida que haga por ellos; multiplicaré su gente como un rebaño. 38 Las ciudades en ruinas se llenarán de tanta gente, que se parecerán a las ovejas que en las fiestas se llevan a Jerusalén para ofrecerlas en sacrificio. Entonces reconocerán que yo soy el Señor.”»
Los huesos secos
37 El Señor puso su mano sobre mí, y me hizo salir lleno de su poder, y me colocó en un valle que estaba lleno de huesos. 2 El Señor me hizo recorrerlo en todas direcciones; los huesos cubrían el valle, eran muchísimos y estaban completamente secos. 3 Entonces me dijo: «¿Crees tú que estos huesos pueden volver a tener vida?» Yo le respondí: «Señor, sólo tú lo sabes.»
4 Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Habla en mi nombre a estos huesos. Diles: “Huesos secos, escuchen este mensaje del Señor. 5 El Señor les dice: Voy a hacer entrar en ustedes aliento de vida, para que revivan. 6 Les pondré tendones, los rellenaré de carne, los cubriré de piel y les daré aliento de vida para que revivan. Entonces reconocerán ustedes que yo soy el Señor.”» 7 Yo les hablé como él me lo había ordenado. Y mientras les hablaba, oí un ruido: era un terremoto, y los huesos comenzaron a juntarse unos con otros. 8 Y vi que sobre ellos aparecían tendones y carne, y que se cubrían de piel. Pero no tenían aliento de vida.
9 Entonces el Señor me dijo: «Habla en mi nombre al aliento de vida, y dile: “Así dice el Señor: Aliento de vida, ven de los cuatro puntos cardinales y da vida a estos cuerpos muertos.”» 10 Yo hablé en nombre del Señor, como él me lo ordenó, y el aliento de vida vino y entró en ellos, y ellos revivieron y se pusieron de pie. Eran tantos que formaban un ejército inmenso.
11 Entonces el Señor me dijo: «El pueblo de Israel es como estos huesos. Andan diciendo: “Nuestros huesos están secos; no tenemos ninguna esperanza, estamos perdidos.” 12 Pues bien, háblales en mi nombre, y diles: “Esto dice el Señor: Pueblo mío, voy a abrir las tumbas de ustedes; voy a sacarlos de ellas y a hacerlos volver a la tierra de Israel. 13 Y cuando yo abra sus tumbas y los saque de ellas, reconocerán ustedes, pueblo mío, que yo soy el Señor. 14 Yo pondré en ustedes mi aliento de vida, y ustedes revivirán; y los instalaré en su propia tierra. Entonces sabrán que yo, el Señor, lo he dicho y lo he hecho. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.”»
Reunificación de Judá e Israel
15 El Señor se dirigió a mí, y me dijo: 16 «Toma un palo, y escribe en él: “Judá y sus aliados israelitas”. Toma luego otro palo, y escribe: “José, representado por Efraín, y todos sus aliados del resto de Israel”. 17 En seguida, júntalos en tu mano el uno con el otro, de manera que formen uno solo. 18 Cuando tus compatriotas te digan: “Explícanos lo que esto significa”, 19 diles: “Esto dice el Señor: Voy a tomar el palo de José, que está en manos de Efraín y de las demás tribus aliadas de Israel, y lo voy a juntar con el palo de Judá para convertirlos en un solo palo en mi mano.” 20 Ten en tu mano, a la vista de ellos, los dos palos sobre los cuales escribiste. 21 Luego diles: “Esto dice el Señor: Voy a sacar a los israelitas de entre las naciones a donde han ido a parar; los reuniré de todas partes y los haré volver a su tierra. 22 Haré de ellos una sola nación en este país, en los montes de Israel, y tendrán un solo rey. No volverán a estar divididos en dos naciones, ni separados en dos reinos. 23 Tampoco volverán a mancharse adorando ídolos repugnantes ni cometiendo toda clase de pecados. Yo los libraré de todas las infidelidades que han cometido, y los limpiaré de sus pecados. Ellos serán mi pueblo y yo seré su Dios. 24 Mi siervo David será el rey y único pastor de todos ellos, y ellos me obedecerán y cumplirán mis leyes y decretos. 25 Vivirán en el país que di a mi siervo Jacob, donde también vivieron sus antepasados. Allí vivirán siempre ellos y sus hijos y todos sus descendientes; y mi siervo David será siempre su jefe. 26 Haré con ellos una alianza para asegurarles una vida tranquila. Será una alianza eterna. Haré que aumenten en número, y para siempre pondré mi santo templo en medio de ellos. 27 Viviré entre ellos, y yo seré su Dios y ellos serán mi pueblo. 28 Cuando mi santo templo esté para siempre en medio de ellos, las demás naciones reconocerán que yo he escogido a Israel como mi posesión sagrada.”»

Hope for the Mountains of Israel
36 “Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel(A) and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. 2 This is what the Sovereign Lord says:(B) The enemy said of you, “Aha!(C) The ancient heights(D) have become our possession.(E)”’ 3 Therefore prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged(F) and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people’s malicious talk and slander,(G) 4 therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys,(H) to the desolate ruins(I) and the deserted(J) towns that have been plundered and ridiculed(K) by the rest of the nations around you(L)— 5 this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning(M) zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.’(N) 6 Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations.(O) 7 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand(P) that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.(Q)
8 “‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit(R) for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. 9 I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,(S) 10 and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins(T) rebuilt.(U) 11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful(V) and become numerous. I will settle people(W) on you as in the past(X) and will make you prosper more than before.(Y) Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance;(Z) you will never again deprive them of their children.
13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, “You devour people(AA) and deprive your nation of its children,” 14 therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord. 15 No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AB)’”
Israel’s Restoration Assured
16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness(AC) in my sight.(AD) 18 So I poured out(AE) my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered(AF) through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.(AG) 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned(AH) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’(AI) 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.(AJ)
22 “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,(AK) which you have profaned(AL) among the nations where you have gone.(AM) 23 I will show the holiness of my great name,(AN) which has been profaned(AO) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,(AP) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy(AQ) through you before their eyes.(AR)
24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.(AS) 25 I will sprinkle(AT) clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse(AU) you from all your impurities(AV) and from all your idols.(AW) 26 I will give you a new heart(AX) and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone(AY) and give you a heart of flesh.(AZ) 27 And I will put my Spirit(BA) in you and move you to follow my decrees(BB) and be careful to keep my laws.(BC) 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people,(BD) and I will be your God.(BE) 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine(BF) upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.(BG) 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.(BH) 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed(BI) and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!(BJ)
33 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse(BK) you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins(BL) will be rebuilt.(BM) 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;(BN) the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.(BO)” 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’(BP)
37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea(BQ) and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,(BR) 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings(BS) at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(BT)”
The Valley of Dry Bones
37 The hand of the Lord was on me,(BU) and he brought me out by the Spirit(BV) of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley;(BW) it was full of bones.(BX) 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.(BY)”
4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!(BZ) 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life.(CA) 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(CB)’”
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath;(CC) prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds(CD) and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded(CE) me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.(CF)
11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’(CG) 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.(CH) 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord,(CI) when I open your graves and bring you up from them.(CJ) 14 I will put my Spirit(CK) in you and you will live, and I will settle(CL) you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.(CM)’”
One Nation Under One King
15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites(CN) associated with him.(CO)’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’ 17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.(CP)
18 “When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’(CQ) 19 say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph—which is in Ephraim’s hand—and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’(CR) 20 Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on 21 and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.(CS) 22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel.(CT) There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.(CU) 23 They will no longer defile(CV) themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,[b](CW) and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.(CX)
24 “‘My servant David(CY) will be king(CZ) over them, and they will all have one shepherd.(DA) They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.(DB) 25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived.(DC) They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever,(DD) and David my servant will be their prince forever.(DE) 26 I will make a covenant of peace(DF) with them; it will be an everlasting covenant.(DG) I will establish them and increase their numbers,(DH) and I will put my sanctuary among them(DI) forever.(DJ) 27 My dwelling place(DK) will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.(DL) 28 Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy,(DM) when my sanctuary is among them forever.(DN)’”
