17 (vii) The whole community of the people of Isra’el left the Seen Desert, traveling in stages, as Adonai had ordered, and camped at Refidim; but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 The people quarreled with Moshe, demanding, “Give us water to drink!” But Moshe replied, “Why pick a fight with me? Why are you testing Adonai?” 3 However, the people were thirsty for water there and grumbled against Moshe, “For what did you bring us up from Egypt? To kill us, our children and our livestock with thirst?”
4 Moshe cried out to Adonai, “What am I to do with these people? They’re ready to stone me!” 5 Adonai answered Moshe, “Go on ahead of the people, and bring with you the leaders of Isra’el. Take your staff in your hand, the one you used to strike the river; and go. 6 I will stand in front of you there on the rock in Horev. You are to strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so the people can drink.” Moshe did this in the sight of the leaders of Isra’el. 7 The place was named Massah [testing] and M’rivah [quarreling] because of the quarreling of the people of Isra’el and because they tested Adonai by asking, “Is Adonai with us or not?”
8 Then ‘Amalek came and fought with Isra’el at Refidim. 9 Moshe said to Y’hoshua, “Choose men for us, go out, and fight with ‘Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with God’s staff in my hand.” 10 Y’hoshua did as Moshe had told him and fought with ‘Amalek. Then Moshe, Aharon and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 When Moshe raised his hand, Isra’el prevailed; but when he let it down, ‘Amalek prevailed. 12 However, Moshe’s hands grew heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aharon and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side and the other on the other; so that his hands stayed steady until sunset. 13 Thus Y’hoshua defeated ‘Amalek, putting their people to the sword.
(Maftir) 14 Adonai said to Moshe, “Write this in a book to be remembered, and tell it to Y’hoshua: I will completely blot out any memory of ‘Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moshe built an altar, called it Adonai Nissi [Adonai is my banner/miracle], 16 and said, “Because their hand was against the throne of Yah, Adonai will fight ‘Amalek generation after generation.”

17 Toda la comunidad israelita salió del desierto de Sin, siguiendo su camino poco a poco, de acuerdo con las órdenes del Señor. Después acamparon en Refidim, pero no había agua para que el pueblo bebiera, 2 así que le reclamaron a Moisés, diciéndole:
—¡Danos agua para beber!
—¿Por qué me hacen reclamaciones a mí? ¿Por qué ponen a prueba a Dios? —contestó Moisés.
3 Pero el pueblo tenía sed, y hablaron en contra de Moisés. Decían:
—¿Para qué nos hiciste salir de Egipto? ¿Para matarnos de sed, junto con nuestros hijos y nuestros animales?
4 Moisés clamó entonces al Señor, y le dijo:
—¿Qué voy a hacer con esta gente? ¡Un poco más y me matan a pedradas!
5 Y el Señor le contestó:
—Pasa delante del pueblo, y hazte acompañar de algunos ancianos de Israel. Llévate también el bastón con que golpeaste el río, y ponte en marcha. 6 Yo estaré esperándote allá en el monte Horeb, sobre la roca. Cuando golpees la roca, saldrá agua de ella para que beba la gente.
Moisés lo hizo así, a la vista de los ancianos de Israel, 7 y llamó a aquel lugar Meribá porque los israelitas le habían hecho reclamaciones, y también lo llamó Masá porque habían puesto a prueba a Dios, al decir: «¿Está o no está el Señor con nosotros?»
Guerra contra los amalecitas
8 Los amalecitas se dirigieron a Refidim para pelear contra los israelitas. 9 Entonces Moisés le dijo a Josué:
—Escoge algunos hombres y sal a pelear contra los amalecitas. Yo estaré mañana en lo alto del monte, con el bastón de Dios en la mano.
10 Josué hizo lo que Moisés le ordenó, y salió a pelear contra los amalecitas. Mientras tanto, Moisés, Aarón y Hur subieron a lo alto del monte. 11 Cuando Moisés levantaba su brazo, los israelitas dominaban en la batalla; pero cuando lo bajaba, dominaban los amalecitas. 12 Pero como a Moisés se le cansaban los brazos, tomaron una piedra y se la pusieron debajo, para que se sentara en ella. Luego Aarón y Hur le sostuvieron los brazos, uno de un lado y el otro del otro. De esta manera los brazos de Moisés se mantuvieron firmes hasta que el sol se puso, 13 y Josué derrotó al ejército amalecita a filo de espada.
14 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Moisés:
—Escribe esto en un libro, para que sea recordado; y dile a Josué que voy a borrar por completo el recuerdo de los amalecitas.
15 Moisés hizo un altar, al que puso por nombre «El Señor es mi bandera», 16 y dijo:
«¡La bandera del Señor en la mano!
¡El Señor está en guerra con Amalec
de una generación a otra!»

Water From the Rock
17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,(A) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,(B) but there was no water(C) for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water(D) to drink.”(E)
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”(F)
3 But the people were thirsty(G) for water there, and they grumbled(H) against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die(I) of thirst?”
4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone(J) me.”
5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff(K) with which you struck the Nile,(L) and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.(M) Strike(N) the rock, and water(O) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a](P) and Meribah[b](Q) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(R) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(S) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(T) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(U) of God in my hands.”
10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur(V) went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,(W) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.(X) 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite(Y) army with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(Z) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out(AA) the name of Amalek(AB) from under heaven.”
15 Moses built an altar(AC) and called(AD) it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[c] the throne of the Lord,[d] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites(AE) from generation to generation.”(AF)
