Israels lovsång
15 Då sjöng Mose och Israels barn denna lovsång till Herren:
"Jag vill lovsjunga Herren,
ty högt är han upphöjd.
Häst och ryttare störtade han i havet.
2 Herren är min starkhet och min lovsång,
han blev min frälsning.
Han är min Gud, jag vill prisa honom,
min faders Gud, jag vill upphöja honom.
3 Herren är en stridsman,
Herren är hans namn.
4 Faraos vagnar och här kastade han i havet,
hans utvalda krigsmän dränktes i Röda havet.
5 Djupen övertäckte dem,
de sjönk till botten som sten.
6 Din högra hand, Herre, härlig i sin kraft,
din högra hand, Herre, krossade fienden.
7 I din stora höghet slog du ner dina motståndare,
du släppte loss din vrede,
den förtärde dem som strå.
8 För en fnysning från din näsa dämdes vattnen upp,
böljorna reste sig som en mur,
vattenströmmarna stelnade i havets djup.
9 Fienden sade: Jag skall förfölja dem,
jag skall hinna upp dem,
jag skall utskifta byte,
släcka min hämnd på dem.
Jag skall dra mitt svärd,
min hand skall förgöra dem.
10 Du andades på dem och havet övertäckte dem,
de sjönk som bly i de väldiga vattnen.
11 Vem är som du bland gudarna, Herre?
Vem är som du, härlig i helighet,
värdig förundran under lovsång,
du som gör under.
12 Du räckte ut din högra hand,
och jorden uppslukade dem.
13 Du ledde med din nåd det folk som du återlöst,
du förde dem med din makt till din heliga boning.
14 Folken hörde det och darrade,
ångest grep Filisteens inbyggare.
15 Då förskräcktes Edoms furstar,
Moabs hövdingar bävade,
alla Kanaans inbyggare smälte av ångest.
16 Över dem föll skräck och fruktan.
Inför din mäktiga arm stod de som förstenade,
till dess ditt folk hade dragit förbi, Herre,
till dess det hade dragit förbi,
det folk som du hade köpt.
17 Du för dem in och planterar dem
på din arvedels berg,
på den plats, Herre,
som du har gjort till din boning,
i den helgedom, Herre, som dina händer berett.
18 Herren skall regera alltid och för evigt."
19 När Faraos hästar med vagnar och ryttare hade kommit ner i havet, lät Herren havets vatten vända tillbaka över dem. Men Israels barn gick mitt igenom havet på torr mark.
20 Och profetissan Mirjam, Arons syster, tog en tamburin i handen, och alla kvinnorna följde henne med tamburiner och dansade. 21 Mirjam sjöng för dem:
"Lovsjung Herren, ty högt är han upphöjd.
Häst och ryttare störtade han i havet."
Det bittra vattnet i Mara
22 Därefter lät Mose Israels barn bryta upp från Röda havet, och de drog ut i öknen Shur. Under tre dagar vandrade de i öknen utan att finna vatten. 23 Sedan kom de till Mara, men de kunde inte dricka vattnet där, eftersom det var bittert. Därför kallade de platsen Mara.[a] 24 Då knotade folket mot Mose och sade: "Vad skall vi dricka?" 25 Men han ropade till Herren, och Herren visade honom ett slags trä. Han kastade det i vattnet och då blev vattnet sött. Där förelade han folket lag och rätt, och där satte han det på prov. 26 Han sade: "Om du hör Herrens, din Guds, röst och noga lyssnar till hans bud och håller alla hans stadgar, skall jag inte lägga på dig någon av de sjukdomar som jag lade på egyptierna, ty jag är Herren, din läkare.
27 Sedan kom de till Elim, där det fanns tolv vattenkällor och sjuttio palmer. Och de slog läger där vid vattnet.
Manna och vaktlar
16 Hela Israels menighet bröt sedan upp från Elim och kom på femtonde dagen i andra månaden efter sitt uttåg ur Egypten fram till öknen Sin, mellan Elim och Sinai. 2 Och hela Israels menighet knotade mot Mose och Aron i öknen 3 och sade till dem: "Om vi ändå hade fått dö för Herrens hand i Egypten, där vi satt vid köttgrytorna och hade tillräckligt med mat att äta! Men ni har fört oss hit ut i öknen för att låta hela denna skara dö av hunger."
4 Då sade Herren till Mose: "Se, jag skall låta det regna bröd från himlen åt er. Folket skall gå ut och samla så mycket de behöver för varje dag. Så skall jag pröva dem, om de vill vandra efter min lag eller inte. 5 När de på sjätte dagen lagar till vad de har fört hem, skall det vara dubbelt så mycket som de annars samlar varje dag."
6 Och Mose och Aron sade till alla Israels barn: "I kväll kommer ni att förstå att det är Herren som har fört er ut ur Egyptens land, 7 och i morgon skall ni se Herrens härlighet. Herren har hört hur ni knotar mot honom. Vilka är vi, att ni skulle knota mot oss?" 8 Och Mose fortsatte: " Herren ger er i kväll kött att äta och i morgon bröd att mätta er med, för Herren har hört hur ni knotar mot honom. Men vilka är vi? Ni knotar inte mot oss utan mot Herren."
9 Därefter sade Mose till Aron: "Säg till hela Israels menighet: Träd fram inför Herren, för han har hört hur ni knotar." 10 När sedan Aron hade talat till hela Israels menighet, vände de sig mot öknen, och se, då visade sig Herrens härlighet i molnskyn.
11 Och Herren sade till Mose: 12 "Jag har hört hur Israels barn knotar. Säg till dem: I skymningen skall ni få kött att äta och i morgon bröd att mätta er med. Då skall ni inse att jag är Herren, er Gud."
13 På kvällen kom vaktlar och övertäckte lägret, och följande morgon låg det dagg runt omkring lägret. 14 När daggen hade försvunnit, se, då låg det på marken ute i öknen något fint som fjäll, något fint som liknade rimfrost. 15 Israels barn såg det, och då de inte visste vad det var frågade de varandra: "Vad är det här?" Mose sade till dem: "Detta är brödet som Herren har gett er att äta. 16 Och detta är vad Herren har befallt: Var och en skall samla så mycket av det som han behöver till mat. En gomer för var person skall ni ta, efter antalet av ert husfolk. Var och en skall ta åt dem som han har i sitt tält."
17 Israels barn gjorde så, den ene samlade mer och den andre mindre. 18 Men när de mätte upp det med gomermåttet, hade den som samlat mycket ingenting över, och den som samlat lite fattades det ingenting. Var och en hade samlat så mycket som han behövde till mat. 19 Och Mose sade till dem: "Ingen får lämna kvar något av det till i morgon." 20 Men de lydde inte Mose, utan somliga sparade något av det till nästa morgon. Då växte det maskar i det och det luktade illa. Och Mose blev förargad på dem. 21 De samlade sedan in av mannat varje morgon, var och en så mycket han behövde till mat. Men när solhettan kom smälte det bort.
22 På sjätte dagen hade de samlat in dubbelt så mycket av brödet, två gomer för var och en. Folkets alla furstar kom och berättade det för Mose. 23 Då sade han till dem: "Detta är vad Herren sagt. I morgon är det sabbatsvila, en Herrens heliga sabbat. Baka nu det ni vill baka och koka det ni vill koka. Men allt som blir över skall ni spara åt er till i morgon." 24 Och de sparade det till följande morgon, som Mose hade befallt, och nu luktade det inte illa och det kom inga maskar i det. 25 Mose sade: "Ät detta i dag, för i dag är det Herrens sabbat och då kan ni inte finna något på marken. 26 I sex dagar skall ni samla in av det, men på sjunde dagen är det sabbat. Då kan ni inte hitta något."
27 Ändå gick några ut på sjunde dagen för att samla in, men de fann ingenting. 28 Då sade Herren till Mose: "Hur länge skall ni vägra att hålla mina bud och befallningar? 29 Se, Herren har givit er sabbaten. Därför ger han er på sjätte dagen bröd för två dagar. Stanna därför hemma, var och en hos sig. Gå inte hemifrån på sjunde dagen." 30 Alltså höll folket sabbat på sjunde dagen.
31 Israels barn kallade det manna.[b] Det liknade korianderfrö och var vitt och smakade som tunna kakor med honung. 32 Och Mose sade: "Detta är vad Herren har befallt: Spara en gomer av det, så att era efterkommande får se det bröd jag gav er att äta i öknen, när jag förde er ut ur Egyptens land." 33 Till Aron sade Mose: "Tag ett kärl och lägg en gomer manna i det och ställ det inför Herren. Det skall förvaras till kommande släkten." 34 Som Herren hade befallt Mose, så gjorde Aron. Han ställde det framför vittnesbördet[c] för att förvaras där. 35 Och Israels barn åt manna i fyrtio år, ända till dess de kom till bebott land. De åt manna till dess de kom till gränsen av Kanaans land. 36 - En gomer är en tiondels efa. -

15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song(A) to the Lord:
“I will sing(B) to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(C)
he has hurled into the sea.(D)
2 “The Lord is my strength(E) and my defense[a];
he has become my salvation.(F)
He is my God,(G) and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt(H) him.
3 The Lord is a warrior;(I)
the Lord is his name.(J)
4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army(K)
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.[b]
5 The deep waters(L) have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.(M)
6 Your right hand,(N) Lord,
was majestic in power.
Your right hand,(O) Lord,
shattered(P) the enemy.
7 “In the greatness of your majesty(Q)
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;(R)
it consumed(S) them like stubble.
8 By the blast of your nostrils(T)
the waters piled up.(U)
The surging waters stood up like a wall;(V)
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.(W)
9 The enemy boasted,
‘I will pursue,(X) I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;(Y)
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.’
10 But you blew with your breath,(Z)
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.(AA)
11 Who among the gods
is like you,(AB) Lord?
Who is like you—
majestic in holiness,(AC)
awesome in glory,(AD)
working wonders?(AE)
12 “You stretch out(AF) your right hand,
and the earth swallows your enemies.(AG)
13 In your unfailing love you will lead(AH)
the people you have redeemed.(AI)
In your strength you will guide them
to your holy dwelling.(AJ)
14 The nations will hear and tremble;(AK)
anguish(AL) will grip the people of Philistia.(AM)
15 The chiefs(AN) of Edom(AO) will be terrified,
the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,(AP)
the people[c] of Canaan will melt(AQ) away;
16 terror(AR) and dread will fall on them.
By the power of your arm
they will be as still as a stone(AS)—
until your people pass by, Lord,
until the people you bought[d](AT) pass by.(AU)
17 You will bring(AV) them in and plant(AW) them
on the mountain(AX) of your inheritance—
the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,(AY)
the sanctuary,(AZ) Lord, your hands established.
18 “The Lord reigns
for ever and ever.”(BA)
19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[e] went into the sea,(BB) the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.(BC) 20 Then Miriam(BD) the prophet,(BE) Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels(BF) and dancing.(BG) 21 Miriam sang(BH) to them:
“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(BI)
he has hurled into the sea.”(BJ)
The Waters of Marah and Elim
22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert(BK) of Shur.(BL) For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.(BM) 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[f](BN)) 24 So the people grumbled(BO) against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”(BP)
25 Then Moses cried out(BQ) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(BR) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.
There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.(BS) 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep(BT) all his decrees,(BU) I will not bring on you any of the diseases(BV) I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals(BW) you.”
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped(BX) there near the water.
Manna and Quail
16 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin,(BY) which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.(BZ) 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled(CA) against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt!(CB) There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food(CC) we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”(CD)
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven(CE) for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test(CF) them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice(CG) as much as they gather on the other days.”
6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt,(CH) 7 and in the morning you will see the glory(CI) of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling(CJ) against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?”(CK) 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling(CL) against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”(CM)
9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”
10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory(CN) of the Lord appearing in the cloud.(CO)
11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling(CP) of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”(CQ)
13 That evening quail(CR) came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew(CS) around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost(CT) on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know(CU) what it was.
Moses said to them, “It is the bread(CV) the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[g](CW) for each person you have in your tent.’”
17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.(CX) Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
19 Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”(CY)
20 However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.(CZ) So Moses was angry(DA) with them.
21 Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. 22 On the sixth day, they gathered twice(DB) as much—two omers[h] for each person—and the leaders of the community(DC) came and reported this to Moses. 23 He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath(DD) to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’”
24 So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. 25 “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. 26 Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath,(DE) there will not be any.”
27 Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you[i] refuse to keep my commands(DF) and my instructions? 29 Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 The people of Israel called the bread manna.[j](DG) It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. 32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.’”
33 So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna(DH) in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.”
34 As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law,(DI) so that it might be preserved. 35 The Israelites ate manna(DJ) forty years,(DK) until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.(DL)
