Israel’s Song
15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said:
I will sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted;
he has thrown the horse
and its rider into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength and my song;[a]
he has become my salvation.(A)
This is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.(B)
3 The Lord is a warrior;(C)
the Lord is his name.(D)
4 He threw Pharaoh’s chariots
and his army into the sea;
the elite of his officers
were drowned in the Red Sea.(E)
5 The floods covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.(F)
6 Lord, your right hand is glorious in power.
Lord, your right hand shattered the enemy.(G)
7 You overthrew your adversaries
by your great majesty.
You unleashed your burning wrath;
it consumed them like stubble.(H)
8 The water heaped up(I) at the blast from your nostrils;
the currents stood firm like a dam.
The watery depths congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said:
‘I will pursue, I will overtake,
I will divide the spoil.(J)
My desire will be gratified at their expense.
I will draw my sword;
my hand will destroy[b] them.’
10 But you blew with your breath,
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.
11 Lord, who is like you among the gods?
Who is like you, glorious in holiness,(K)
revered with praises, performing wonders?(L)
12 You stretched out your right hand,
and the earth swallowed them.
13 With your faithful love,
you will lead the people
you have redeemed;
you will guide them to your holy dwelling
with your strength.(M)
14 When the peoples hear, they will shudder;
anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified;(N)
trembling will seize the leaders of Moab;
all the inhabitants of Canaan will panic;
16 terror(O) and dread will fall on them.
They will be as still[c] as a stone
because of your powerful arm
until your people pass by, Lord,
until the people whom you purchased[d] pass by.(P)
17 You will bring them in and plant them
on the mountain of your possession;(Q)
Lord, you have prepared the place
for your dwelling;
Lord,[e] your hands have established the sanctuary.
18 The Lord will reign(R) for ever and ever!
19 When Pharaoh’s horses with his chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the water of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then the prophetess Miriam,(S) Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women came out following her with tambourines and dancing.(T) 21 Miriam sang to them:
Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted;
he has thrown the horse
and its rider into the sea.
Water Provided
22 Then Moses led Israel on from the Red Sea, and they went out to the Wilderness of Shur. They journeyed for three days in the wilderness without finding water. 23 They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter – that is why it was named Marah.[f] 24 The people grumbled to Moses, ‘What are we going to drink? ’(U) 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he threw it into the water, the water became drinkable.
The Lord made a statute and ordinance for them at Marah, and he tested them there.(V) 26 He said, ‘If you will carefully obey the Lord your God, do what is right in his sight, pay attention to his commands, and keep all his statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.’(W)
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy date palms, and they camped there by the water.

Het lied van Mozes bij de Rietzee
15 Toen zong Mozes met de Israëlieten dit lied voor de Heer:
"De Heer is geweldig, van Hem wil ik zingen.
Hij stortte de paarden en hun ruiters in de zee.
2 De Heer is mijn kracht.
Voor Hem is mijn lied,
want Hij heeft mij gered.
Hij is mijn God, Hem prijs ik.
Ik prijs de God van mijn vader.
3 De Heer is een held.
Zijn naam is Heer.
4 Hij heeft de strijdwagens van de farao en zijn leger in de zee gestort.
Egyptes helden verdronken in de Rietzee.
5 Het water bedekte hen.
Ze zonken als een steen in de diepte.
6 Uw hand, Heer, machtig en sterk,
uw hand, Heer, verpletterde de vijand.
7 Door uw grote kracht vernietigde U de mensen die U niet wilden gehoorzamen.
U vernietigde hen volledig, zoals vuur droog gras volledig verbrandt.
8 Met de adem van uw neus blies U het water weg.
Als een dam stond het water daar.
Het water van de zee stolde.
9 De vijand zei: 'We zullen hen achtervolgen en inhalen!
We verdelen de buit!
We zullen hen wel krijgen!
We trekken ons zwaard en doden iedereen!
We vernietigen dat hele volk!'
10 Maar U liet de wind komen en de zee bedekte hen.
Ze zonken als lood in de diepte.
11 Wie van de goden is als U, Heer?
Wie is zo heilig als U?
Welke god doet zulke grote heldendaden?
Welke god doet zulke wonderen als U?
12 U strekte uw hand uit
en de aarde slokte hen op.
13 Omdat U liefdevol en vriendelijk bent,
bevrijdde U uw volk.
Door uw kracht bracht U het volk rustig naar de plaats waar U woont.
14 De volken die dit horen, zullen beven van angst.
De bewoners van Filistea beven.
15 De koningen van Edom zullen geschokt zijn.
De heersers van Moab zullen doodsbang zijn.
De bewoners van Kanaän zullen beven van angst.
16 Doodsbang zullen ze zijn.
Ze zullen versteend van angst staan over uw macht,
als uw volk voorbij komt,
als uw volk dat U voor Uzelf heeft uitgekozen, voorbij komt.
17 U neemt hen mee en plant hen op uw berg,
op de plaats waar U, Heer, wil wonen,
in het heiligdom, Heer, dat U heeft gebouwd.
18 De Heer regeert voor eeuwig en altijd.
19 Want alle paarden en strijdwagens en ruiters van de farao kwamen in de zee.
Toen liet de Heer het water over hen terugstromen.
Maar de Israëlieten gingen over het droge, midden door de zee."
20 De profetes Mirjam, de zus van Aäron, nam een tamboerijn en alle vrouwen dansten met tamboerijnen achter haar aan. 21 Mirjam zong als antwoord op het lied van Mozes:
"Zing voor de Heer, want Hij is geweldig!
Hij stortte de paarden en hun ruiters in de zee."
Het bittere water bij Mara
22 Mozes liet de Israëlieten van de Rietzee verder trekken. Ze trokken naar de Sur-woestijn. Drie dagen lang reisden ze door de woestijn zonder dat ze water vonden. 23 Toen kwamen ze bij een bron in Mara. Maar ze konden het water niet drinken, want het was bitter. Daarom noemden ze die plaats Mara (= 'bitter'). 24 Toen mopperde en klaagde het volk tegen Mozes en zei: "Wat moeten we nu drinken?" 25 Mozes riep luid tot de Heer. Toen wees de Heer hem een stuk hout aan. Dat gooide Mozes in het water. Toen werd het water zoet.
De Heer gaf hun daar wetten en leefregels en Hij stelde hen daar op de proef. 26 Hij zei tegen hen: "Ik wil zien of jullie je best zullen doen om te leven zoals Ik het wil. Als jullie doen wat Ik zeg en gehoorzamen aan mijn wetten en leefregels, zal Ik ervoor zorgen dat jullie niet getroffen zullen worden door één van de ziekten die over de Egyptenaren kwamen. Want Ik, de Heer, ben jullie Genezer."
27 Daarna kwamen ze bij Elim, waar 12 waterbronnen en 70 palmbomen waren. Daar zetten ze hun tentenkamp op.

15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song(A) to the Lord:
“I will sing(B) to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(C)
he has hurled into the sea.(D)
2 “The Lord is my strength(E) and my defense[a];
he has become my salvation.(F)
He is my God,(G) and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt(H) him.
3 The Lord is a warrior;(I)
the Lord is his name.(J)
4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army(K)
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.[b]
5 The deep waters(L) have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.(M)
6 Your right hand,(N) Lord,
was majestic in power.
Your right hand,(O) Lord,
shattered(P) the enemy.
7 “In the greatness of your majesty(Q)
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;(R)
it consumed(S) them like stubble.
8 By the blast of your nostrils(T)
the waters piled up.(U)
The surging waters stood up like a wall;(V)
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.(W)
9 The enemy boasted,

By the power of your arm
they will be as still as a stone(AS)—

17 You will bring(AV) them in and plant(AW) them
on the mountain(AX) of your inheritance—
the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,(AY)
the sanctuary,(AZ) Lord, your hands established.
18 “The Lord reigns
for ever and ever.”(BA)
19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[e] went into the sea,(BB) the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.(BC) 20 Then Miriam(BD) the prophet,(BE) Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels(BF) and dancing.(BG) 21 Miriam sang(BH) to them:
“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(BI)
he has hurled into the sea.”(BJ)
The Waters of Marah and Elim
22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert(BK) of Shur.(BL) For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.(BM) 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[f](BN)) 24 So the people grumbled(BO) against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”(BP)
25 Then Moses cried out(BQ) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(BR) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.
There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.(BS) 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep(BT) all his decrees,(BU) I will not bring on you any of the diseases(BV) I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals(BW) you.”
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped(BX) there near the water.
