Setting Apart the Oldest Sons
13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Set apart for me the first boy born in every family. The oldest son of every Israelite mother belongs to me. Every male animal born first to its mother also belongs to me.”
3 Then Moses said to the people, “Remember this day. It’s the day you came out of Egypt. That’s the land where you were slaves. The Lord used his mighty hand to bring you out of Egypt. Don’t eat anything with yeast in it. 4 You are leaving today. It’s the month of Aviv. 5 The Lord will bring you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites. He promised your people of long ago that he would give that land to you. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. When you get there, celebrate this holy day in this month. 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast. On the seventh day hold a feast to honor the Lord. 7 Eat bread made without yeast during those seven days. Nothing with yeast in it should be found among you. No yeast should be seen anywhere inside your borders. 8 On that day talk to your child. Say, ‘I’m doing this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 When you celebrate this holy day, it will be like a mark on your hand. It will be like a reminder on your forehead. This law of the Lord must be on your lips. The Lord used his mighty hand to bring you out of Egypt. 10 Obey this law at the appointed time year after year.
11 “The Lord will bring you into the land of Canaan. He will give it to you, just as he promised he would. He gave his word to you and your people of long ago. 12 After you arrive in the land, give to the Lord the oldest son of every mother. Every male animal born first to its mother among your livestock belongs to the Lord. 13 By sacrificing a lamb, buy back every male donkey born first to its mother. But if you don’t buy the donkey back, break its neck. Buy back every oldest son.
14 “In days to come, your child will ask you, ‘What does this mean?’ Say to them, ‘The Lord used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt. That’s the land where we were slaves. 15 Pharaoh was stubborn. He refused to let us go. So the Lord killed every oldest son in Egypt. He also killed all those born first among the people and animals. That’s why I sacrifice to the Lord every male animal born first. And that’s why I buy back each of my oldest sons for the Lord.’ 16 This holy day will be like a mark on your hand. It will be like a sign on your forehead. It will remind you that the Lord used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt.”
Israel Goes Through the Red Sea
17 Pharaoh let the people go. The shortest road from Goshen to Canaan went through the Philistine country. But God didn’t lead them that way. God said, “If they have to go into battle, they might change their minds. They might return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people toward the Red Sea by taking them on a road through the desert. The Israelites were ready for battle when they went up out of Egypt.
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph along with him. Joseph had made the Israelites give their word to do this. He had said, “God will surely come to help you. When he does, you must carry my bones up from this place with you.” (Genesis 50:25)
20 The people left Sukkoth. They camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud. It guided them on their way. At night he led them with a pillar of fire. It gave them light. So they could travel by day or at night. 22 The pillar of cloud didn’t leave its place in front of the people during the day. And the pillar of fire didn’t leave its place at night.

13 The Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Consecrate every firstborn male(A) to Me, the firstborn from every womb among the Israelites, both man and domestic animal; it is Mine.”
3 Then Moses said to the people, “Remember this day when you came out of Egypt, out of the place of slavery, for the Lord brought you out of here by the strength of His hand. Nothing leavened may be eaten.(B) 4 Today, in the month of Abib,[a](C) you are leaving. 5 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites,[b] which He swore to your fathers that He would give you, a land flowing with milk and honey,(D) you must carry out this ritual in this month.(E) 6 For seven days you must eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there is to be a festival to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread is to be eaten for those seven days. Nothing leavened may be found among you, and no yeast may be found among you in all your territory. 8 On that day explain to your son, ‘This is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’(F) 9 Let it serve as a sign for you on your hand and as a reminder on your forehead,[c](G) so that the Lord’s instruction may be in your mouth; for the Lord brought you out of Egypt with a strong hand. 10 Keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.
11 “When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 you are to present to the Lord every firstborn male of the womb. All firstborn offspring of the livestock you own that are males will be the Lord’s. 13 You must redeem every firstborn of a donkey with a flock animal, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. However, you must redeem every firstborn among your sons.(H)
14 “In the future, when your son(I) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘By the strength of His hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of livestock. That is why I sacrifice to the Lord all the firstborn of the womb that are males, but I redeem all the firstborn of my sons.’ 16 So let it be a sign on your hand and a symbol[d] on your forehead, for the Lord brought us out of Egypt by the strength of His hand.”(J)
The Route of the Exodus
17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road to the land of the Philistines, even though it was nearby; for God said, “The people will change their minds and return to Egypt if they face war.”(K) 18 So He led the people around toward the Red Sea along the road of the wilderness. And the Israelites left the land of Egypt in battle formation.(L)
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(M) with him, because Joseph had made the Israelites swear a solemn oath, saying, “God will certainly come to your aid; then you must take my bones with you from this place.”
20 They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 The Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud(N) to lead them on their way during the day and in a pillar of fire to give them light at night, so that they could travel day or night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night never left its place in front of the people.

13 Sinabi ng Panginoon kay Moises, 2 “Italaga nʼyo sa akin ang lahat ng panganay na lalaki ng mga Israelita at ang panganay ng lahat ng hayop.”
3 Pagkatapos, sinabi ni Moises sa mga tao, “Alalahanin ninyo ang araw na ito, ang araw na inilabas kayo sa Egipto mula sa pagkaalipin. Sapagkat inilabas kayo ng Panginoon sa pamamagitan ng kanyang kapangyarihan. Huwag kayong kakain ng tinapay na may pampaalsa. 4 Alalahanin ninyo ang araw na ito ng buwan ng Abib[a] – ang araw na inilabas kayo sa Egipto. 5 Dapat nʼyo itong ipagdiwang kapag dinala na kayo ng Panginoon sa lupain ng mga Cananeo, Heteo, Amoreo, Hiveo at mga Jebuseo. Ito ang lupaing ipinangako niya sa inyong mga ninuno na ibibigay sa inyo. Maganda at masaganang lupain[b] na ito. 6 Sa panahon ng pagdiriwang ninyo, kakain kayo ng tinapay na walang pampaalsa sa loob ng pitong araw, at sa ikapitong araw ninyo sisimulang idaos ang pista para sa Panginoon. 7 Huwag na huwag kayong kakain ng tinapay na may pampaalsa sa loob ng pitong araw, at wala dapat makikitang pampaalsa sa inyo o kahit saan sa lugar ninyo. 8 Sa panahon ng pagdiriwang ninyo, ipaliwanag nʼyo sa inyong mga anak na ginagawa ninyo ito para ipagdiwang ang ginawa ng Panginoon nang inilabas niya kayo sa Egipto. 9 Ang pistang itoʼy katulad ng isang tatak sa inyong mga kamay o sa inyong mga noo na magpapaalaala sa inyo na dapat ninyong sabihin sa iba ang mga utos ng Panginoon, dahil inilabas niya kayo sa Egipto sa pamamagitan ng kanyang kapangyarihan. 10 Kaya ipagdiwang ninyo ang pistang ito sa itinakdang panahon bawat taon.
11 “Kapag dinala na kayo ng Panginoon sa lupain ng mga Cananeo na ipinangako niyang ibibigay sa inyong mga ninuno at sa inyo, 12 italaga nʼyo sa Panginoon ang inyong mga panganay na lalaki at pati na rin ang panganay ng inyong mga hayop, dahil pag-aari ito ng Panginoon. 13 Maaaring tubusin sa Panginoon ang mga panganay ng mga asno sa pamamagitan ng pagpapalit nito ng tupa. Pero kung hindi ninyo ito tutubusin, kailangang patayin ang asno sa pamamagitan ng pagbali sa leeg nito. Maaari rin ninyong tubusin ang inyong mga panganay na lalaki.
14 “Sa hinaharap, kapag tinanong kayo ng anak ninyo kung bakit ninyo ito ginagawa, sabihin ninyo sa kanila, ‘Sa pamamagitan ng kapangyarihan ng Panginoon, inilabas niya kami sa Egipto kung saan kami inalipin. 15 Nang hindi pa kami pinapayagan ng Faraon na umalis, pinatay ng Panginoon ang lahat ng panganay na lalaki sa Egipto, maging tao o hayop. Ito ang dahilan kung bakit inihahandog namin sa Panginoon ang lahat ng panganay na lalaki ng aming mga hayop at tinutubos namin ang mga panganay naming lalaki.’ 16 Ang seremonyang ito ay tulad ng tatak sa inyong mga kamay o sa inyong mga noo na magpapaalala sa inyo nang inilabas kayo ng Panginoon sa Egipto sa pamamagitan ng kanyang kapangyarihan.”

17 Nang pinaalis na ng Faraon ang mga Israelita, hindi sila pinadaan ng Dios sa daang papunta sa lupain ng mga Filisteo kahit na iyon ang pinakamalapit na daan. Sapagkat sinabi ng Dios, “Kung may labanang haharapin ang mga Israelita, baka magbago ang isip nila at bumalik sila sa Egipto.” 18 Kaya pinaliko sila ng Dios sa disyerto papunta sa Dagat na Pula.[c] Armado ang mga Israelita para sa labanan nang lisanin nila ang Egipto.
19 Dinala ni Moises ang mga buto ni Jose, ayon sa ipinanumpa noon ni Jose na gagawin ng mga Israelita. Sinabi noon ni Jose, “Siguradong palalayain kayo ng Dios. Kapag nangyari na iyon, dalhin ninyo ang mga buto ko sa pag-alis ninyo sa lugar na ito.”
20 Pag-alis nila sa Sucot, nagkampo sila sa Etam, sa dulo ng disyerto. 21 Kapag araw, ginagabayan sila ng Panginoon sa pamamagitan ng makapal na ulap, at kapag gabi ay ginagabayan sila sa pamamagitan ng naglalagablab na haliging apoy na nagbibigay sa kanila ng liwanag, para makapaglakbay sila araw man o gabi. 22 Nangunguna sa kanila ang makapal na ulap kapag araw at ang naglalagablab na haliging apoy kapag gabi.
