13 L'Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:

2 Consacre-moi tout premier-né, tout premier-né parmi les enfants d'Israël, tant des hommes que des animaux: il m'appartient.

3 Moïse dit au peuple: Souvenez-vous de ce jour, où vous êtes sortis d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude; car c'est par sa main puissante que l'Éternel vous en a fait sortir. On ne mangera point de pain levé.

4 Vous sortez aujourd'hui, dans le mois des épis.

5 Quand l'Éternel t'aura fait entrer dans le pays des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens, qu'il a juré à tes pères de te donner, pays où coulent le lait et le miel, tu rendras ce culte à l'Éternel dans ce même mois.

6 Pendant sept jours, tu mangeras des pains sans levain; et le septième jour, il y aura une fête en l'honneur de l'Éternel.

7 On mangera des pains sans levain pendant les sept jours; on ne verra point chez toi de pain levé, et l'on ne verra point chez toi de levain, dans toute l'étendue de ton pays.

8 Tu diras alors à ton fils: C'est en mémoire de ce que l'Éternel a fait pour moi, lorsque je suis sorti d'Égypte.

9 Ce sera pour toi comme un signe sur ta main et comme un souvenir entre tes yeux, afin que la loi de l'Éternel soit dans ta bouche; car c'est par sa main puissante que l'Éternel t'a fait sortir d'Égypte.

10 Tu observeras cette ordonnance au temps fixé d'année en année.

11 Quand l'Éternel t'aura fait entrer dans le pays des Cananéens, comme il l'a juré à toi et à tes pères, et qu'il te l'aura donné,

12 tu consacreras à l'Éternel tout premier-né, même tout premier-né des animaux que tu auras: les mâles appartiennent à l'Éternel.

13 Tu rachèteras avec un agneau tout premier-né de l'âne; et, si tu ne le rachètes pas, tu lui briseras la nuque. Tu rachèteras aussi tout premier-né de l'homme parmi tes fils.

14 Et lorsque ton fils te demandera un jour: Que signifie cela? tu lui répondras: Par sa main puissante, l'Éternel nous a fait sortir d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude;

15 et, comme Pharaon s'obstinait à ne point nous laisser aller, l'Éternel fit mourir tous les premiers-nés dans le pays d'Égypte, depuis les premiers-nés des hommes jusqu'aux premiers-nés des animaux. Voilà pourquoi j'offre en sacrifice à l'Éternel tout premier-né des mâles, et je rachète tout premier-né de mes fils.

16 Ce sera comme un signe sur ta main et comme des fronteaux entre tes yeux; car c'est par sa main puissante que l'Éternel nous a fait sortir d'Égypte.

17 Lorsque Pharaon laissa aller le peuple, Dieu ne le conduisit point par le chemin du pays des Philistins, quoique le plus proche; car Dieu dit: Le peuple pourrait se repentir en voyant la guerre, et retourner en Égypte.

18 Mais Dieu fit faire au peuple un détour par le chemin du désert, vers la mer Rouge. Les enfants d'Israël montèrent en armes hors du pays d'Égypte.

19 Moïse prit avec lui les os de Joseph; car Joseph avait fait jurer les fils d'Israël, en disant: Dieu vous visitera, et vous ferez remonter avec vous mes os loin d'ici.

20 Ils partirent de Succoth, et ils campèrent à Étham, à l'extrémité du désert.

21 L'Éternel allait devant eux, le jour dans une colonne de nuée pour les guider dans leur chemin, et la nuit dans une colonne de feu pour les éclairer, afin qu'ils marchassent jour et nuit.

22 La colonne de nuée ne se retirait point de devant le peuple pendant le jour, ni la colonne de feu pendant la nuit.

Sanctifying the Firstborn

13 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “(A)Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first [a]offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me.”

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

3 And Moses said to the people, “(B)Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of [b]slavery; for (C)by a strong hand Yahweh brought you out from this place. (D)And nothing leavened shall be eaten. 4 This day, in the (E)month of Abib, you are going out. 5 And it shall be when Yahweh (F)brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which (G)He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, (H)that you shall [c]do this service in this month. 6 For (I)seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to Yahweh. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and (J)nothing leavened shall be seen [d]among you, nor shall any leaven be seen [e]among you in all your borders. 8 (K)And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what Yahweh did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And (L)it will be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of Yahweh may be in your mouth; for with (M)a strong hand Yahweh brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall (N)keep this statute at its appointed time from [f]year to year.

11 “And it will be when (O)Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as (P)He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 (Q)and you shall [g]devote to Yahweh the first [h]offspring of every womb and [i]the first offspring of every beast that you own; the males belong to Yahweh. 13 But (R)every first [j]offspring of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and (S)every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 (T)And it will be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘(U)With a strong hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt, from the house of [k]slavery. 15 And it happened, when Pharaoh hardened his heart with stiffness about letting us go, that (V)Yahweh killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to Yahweh the males, the first [l]offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So (W)it will be as a sign on your hand and as [m]phylacteries between your eyes, for with a strong hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.”

Pillars of Cloud and Fire

17 Now it happened that when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not guide them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “(X)Lest the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Hence God turned the people to the way of the wilderness to the [n]Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up (Y)in battle array from the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took (Z)the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will surely [o]take care of you, and you shall bring up my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from (AA)Succoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 (AB)And Yahweh was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to guide them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might go by day and by night. 22 [p]He (AC)did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Consecration of the Firstborn

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn male.(A) The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”

3 Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt,(B) out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.(C) Eat nothing containing yeast.(D) 4 Today, in the month of Aviv,(E) you are leaving. 5 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,(F) Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites(G)—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey(H)—you are to observe this ceremony(I) in this month: 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival(J) to the Lord. 7 Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8 On that day tell your son,(K) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand(L) and a reminder on your forehead(M) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.(N) 10 You must keep this ordinance(O) at the appointed time(P) year after year.

11 “After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites(Q) and gives it to you, as he promised on oath(R) to you and your ancestors,(S) 12 you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord.(T) 13 Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey,(U) but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(V) Redeem(W) every firstborn among your sons.(X)

14 “In days to come, when your son(Y) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(Z) 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’(AA) 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead(AB) that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

Crossing the Sea

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”(AC) 18 So God led(AD) the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[a] The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.(AE)

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(AF) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[b](AG)

20 After leaving Sukkoth(AH) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(AI) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(AJ) of them in a pillar of cloud(AK) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left(AL) its place in front of the people.

Dedication of the Firstborn

13 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Dedicate to me every firstborn among the Israelites. The first offspring to be born, of both humans and animals, belongs to me.”

3 So Moses said to the people, “This is a day to remember forever—the day you left Egypt, the place of your slavery. Today the Lord has brought you out by the power of his mighty hand. (Remember, eat no food containing yeast.) 4 On this day in early spring, in the month of Abib,[a] you have been set free. 5 You must celebrate this event in this month each year after the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites. (He swore to your ancestors that he would give you this land—a land flowing with milk and honey.) 6 For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. Then on the seventh day, celebrate a feast to the Lord. 7 Eat bread without yeast during those seven days. In fact, there must be no yeast bread or any yeast at all found within the borders of your land during this time.

8 “On the seventh day you must explain to your children, ‘I am celebrating what the Lord did for me when I left Egypt.’ 9 This annual festival will be a visible sign to you, like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. Let it remind you always to recite this teaching of the Lord: ‘With a strong hand, the Lord rescued you from Egypt.’[b] 10 So observe the decree of this festival at the appointed time each year.

11 “This is what you must do when the Lord fulfills the promise he swore to you and to your ancestors. When he gives you the land where the Canaanites now live, 12 you must present all firstborn sons and firstborn male animals to the Lord, for they belong to him. 13 A firstborn donkey may be bought back from the Lord by presenting a lamb or young goat in its place. But if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. However, you must buy back every firstborn son.

14 “And in the future, your children will ask you, ‘What does all this mean?’ Then you will tell them, ‘With the power of his mighty hand, the Lord brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery. 15 Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, so the Lord killed all the firstborn males throughout the land of Egypt, both people and animals. That is why I now sacrifice all the firstborn males to the Lord—except that the firstborn sons are always bought back.’ 16 This ceremony will be like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. It is a reminder that the power of the Lord’s mighty hand brought us out of Egypt.”

Israel’s Wilderness Detour

17 When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea.[c] Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.[d]

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear to do this. He said, “God will certainly come to help you. When he does, you must take my bones with you from this place.”

20 The Israelites left Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. 22 And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.
