Ester dà un convito per il re e Aman
5 (A)Il terzo giorno Ester si mise la veste reale e si presentò nel cortile interno della casa del re, di fronte all’appartamento del re. Il re era seduto sul trono reale nella reggia, di fronte all’entrata. 2 E quando il re vide la regina Ester in piedi nel cortile, lei si guadagnò la sua grazia. Il re stese verso Ester lo scettro d’oro che teneva in mano, ed Ester si avvicinò e toccò la punta dello scettro. 3 Allora il re le disse: «Che hai, regina Ester? Che cosa domandi? Se anche chiedessi la metà del regno, ti sarà data». 4 Ester rispose: «Se così piace al re, venga oggi il re con Aman al convito che ho preparato per lui». 5 Il re disse: «Fate venire subito Aman, per fare ciò che Ester ha detto». Così il re e Aman andarono al convito che Ester aveva preparato. 6 Mentre bevevano il vino, il re disse a Ester: «Qual è la tua richiesta? Ti sarà concessa. Che desideri? Fosse anche la metà del regno, l’avrai». 7 Ester rispose: «Ecco la mia richiesta, ecco quel che desidero: 8 se ho trovato grazia agli occhi del re, e se piace al re di concedermi quello che chiedo e di soddisfare il mio desiderio, venga il re con Aman anche domani al convito che io preparerò per loro, e farò come il re ha detto».
Aman cerca di far morire Mardocheo
9 (B)Aman uscì, quel giorno, tutto allegro e con il cuore contento; ma quando vide, alla porta del re, Mardocheo che non si alzava né si muoveva per lui, fu pieno d’ira contro Mardocheo. 10 Tuttavia Aman si contenne, se ne andò a casa e mandò a chiamare i suoi amici e Zeres, sua moglie. 11 Aman parlò loro della magnificenza delle sue ricchezze, del gran numero dei suoi figli, di tutto quello che il re aveva fatto per renderlo grande e di come l’aveva innalzato al di sopra dei prìncipi e dei servitori del re. 12 E aggiunse: «Anche la regina Ester non ha fatto venire con il re altri che me al convito che ha dato; e anche per domani sono invitato da lei con il re. 13 Ma tutto questo non mi soddisfa, finché vedrò quel Giudeo, Mardocheo, sedere alla porta del re». 14 Allora Zeres, sua moglie, e tutti i suoi amici gli dissero: «Si prepari una forca alta cinquanta cubiti[a]; e domattina di’ al re che vi si impicchi Mardocheo; poi vattene allegro al convito con il re». La cosa piacque ad Aman, che fece preparare la forca.

Esther’s Request to the King
5 On the third day Esther put on her royal robes(A) and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king’s(B) hall. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance. 2 When he saw Queen Esther standing in the court, he was pleased with her and held out to her the gold scepter that was in his hand. So Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter.(C)
3 Then the king asked, “What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom,(D) it will be given you.”
4 “If it pleases the king,” replied Esther, “let the king, together with Haman, come today to a banquet I have prepared for him.”
5 “Bring Haman at once,” the king said, “so that we may do what Esther asks.”
So the king and Haman went to the banquet Esther had prepared. 6 As they were drinking wine,(E) the king again asked Esther, “Now what is your petition? It will be given you. And what is your request? Even up to half the kingdom,(F) it will be granted.”(G)
7 Esther replied, “My petition and my request is this: 8 If the king regards me with favor(H) and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet(I) I will prepare for them. Then I will answer the king’s question.”
Haman’s Rage Against Mordecai
9 Haman went out that day happy and in high spirits. But when he saw Mordecai at the king’s gate and observed that he neither rose nor showed fear in his presence, he was filled with rage(J) against Mordecai.(K) 10 Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and went home.
Calling together his friends and Zeresh,(L) his wife, 11 Haman boasted(M) to them about his vast wealth, his many sons,(N) and all the ways the king had honored him and how he had elevated him above the other nobles and officials. 12 “And that’s not all,” Haman added. “I’m the only person(O) Queen Esther invited to accompany the king to the banquet she gave. And she has invited me along with the king tomorrow. 13 But all this gives me no satisfaction as long as I see that Jew Mordecai sitting at the king’s gate.(P)”
14 His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Have a pole set up, reaching to a height of fifty cubits,[a](Q) and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai impaled(R) on it. Then go with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself.” This suggestion delighted Haman, and he had the pole set up.
