8 Voici les chefs de familles et les généalogies de ceux qui montèrent avec moi de Babylone, sous le règne du roi Artaxerxès.
2 Des fils de Phinées, Guerschom; des fils d'Ithamar, Daniel; des fils de David, Hatthusch, des fils de Schecania;
3 des fils de Pareosch, Zacharie, et avec lui cent cinquante mâles enregistrés;
4 des fils de Pachat Moab, Eljoénaï, fils de Zerachja, et avec lui deux cents mâles;
5 des fils de Schecania, le fils de Jachaziel, et avec lui trois cents mâles;
6 des fils d'Adin, Ébed, fils de Jonathan, et avec lui cinquante mâles;
7 des fils d'Élam, Ésaïe, fils d'Athalia, et avec lui soixante-dix mâles;
8 des fils de Schephathia, Zebadia, fils de Micaël, et avec lui quatre-vingts mâles;
9 des fils de Joab, Abdias, fils de Jehiel, et avec lui deux cent dix-huit mâles;
10 des fils de Schelomith, le fils de Josiphia, et avec lui cent soixante mâles;
11 des fils de Bébaï, Zacharie, fils de Bébaï, et avec lui vingt-huit mâles;
12 des fils d'Azgad, Jochanan, fils d'Hakkathan, et avec lui cent dix mâles;
13 des fils d'Adonikam, les derniers, dont voici les noms: Éliphéleth, Jeïel et Schemaeja, et avec eux soixante mâles;
14 des fils de Bigvaï, Uthaï et Zabbud, et avec eux soixante-dix mâles.
15 Je les rassemblai près du fleuve qui coule vers Ahava, et nous campâmes là trois jours. Je dirigeai mon attention sur le peuple et sur les sacrificateurs, et je ne trouvai là aucun des fils de Lévi.
16 Alors je fis appeler les chefs Éliézer, Ariel, Schemaeja, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie et Meschullam, et les docteurs Jojarib et Elnathan.
17 Je les envoyai vers le chef Iddo, demeurant à Casiphia, et je mis dans leur bouche ce qu'ils devaient dire à Iddo et à ses frères les Néthiniens qui étaient à Casiphia, afin qu'ils nous amenassent des serviteurs pour la maison de notre Dieu.
18 Et, comme la bonne main de notre Dieu était sur nous, ils nous amenèrent Schérébia, homme de sens, d'entre les fils de Machli, fils de Lévi, fils d'Israël, et avec lui ses fils et ses frères, au nombre de dix-huit;
19 Haschabia, et avec lui Ésaïe, d'entre les fils de Merari, ses frères et leurs fils, au nombre de vingt;
20 et d'entre les Néthiniens, que David et les chefs avaient mis au service des Lévites, deux cent vingt Néthiniens, tous désignés par leurs noms.
21 Là, près du fleuve d'Ahava, je publiai un jeûne d'humiliation devant notre Dieu, afin d'implorer de lui un heureux voyage pour nous, pour nos enfants, et pour tout ce qui nous appartenait.
22 J'aurais eu honte de demander au roi une escorte et des cavaliers pour nous protéger contre l'ennemi pendant la route, car nous avions dit au roi: La main de notre Dieu est pour leur bien sur tous ceux qui le cherchent, mais sa force et sa colère sont sur tous ceux qui l'abandonnent.
23 C'est à cause de cela que nous jeûnâmes et que nous invoquâmes notre Dieu. Et il nous exauça.
24 Je choisis douze chefs des sacrificateurs, Schérébia, Haschabia, et dix de leurs frères.
25 Je pesai devant eux l'argent, l'or, et les ustensiles, donnés en offrande pour la maison de notre Dieu par le roi, ses conseillers et ses chefs, et par tous ceux d'Israël qu'on avait trouvés.
26 Je remis entre leurs mains six cent cinquante talents d'argent, des ustensiles d'argent pour cent talents, cent talents d'or,
27 vingt coupes d'or valant mille dariques, et deux vases d'un bel airain poli, aussi précieux que l'or.
28 Puis je leur dis: Vous êtes consacrés à l'Éternel; ces ustensiles sont des choses saintes, et cet argent et cet or sont une offrande volontaire à l'Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères.
29 Soyez vigilants, et prenez cela sous votre garde, jusqu'à ce que vous le pesiez devant les chefs des sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et devant les chefs de familles d'Israël, à Jérusalem, dans les chambres de la maison de l'Éternel.
30 Et les sacrificateurs et les Lévites reçurent au poids l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles, pour les porter à Jérusalem, dans la maison de notre Dieu.
31 Nous partîmes du fleuve d'Ahava pour nous rendre à Jérusalem, le douzième jour du premier mois. La main de notre Dieu fut sur nous et nous préserva des attaques de l'ennemi et de toute embûche pendant la route.
32 Nous arrivâmes à Jérusalem, et nous nous y reposâmes trois jours.
33 Le quatrième jour, nous pesâmes dans la maison de notre Dieu l'argent, l'or, et les ustensiles, que nous remîmes à Merémoth, fils d'Urie, le sacrificateur; il y avait avec lui Éléazar, fils de Phinées, et avec eux les Lévites Jozabad, fils de Josué, et Noadia, fils de Binnuï.
34 Le tout ayant été vérifié, soit pour le nombre, soit pour le poids, on mit alors par écrit le poids du tout.
35 Les fils de la captivité revenus de l'exil offrirent en holocauste au Dieu d'Israël douze taureaux pour tout Israël, quatre-vingt-seize béliers, soixante-dix-sept agneaux, et douze boucs comme victimes expiatoires, le tout en holocauste à l'Éternel.
36 Ils transmirent les ordres du roi aux satrapes du roi et aux gouverneurs de ce côté du fleuve, lesquels honorèrent le peuple et la maison de Dieu.

14 des descendants de Bigvaï : Outaï et Zabboud, à la tête de 70 hommes.
L’adjonction de lévites
15 Je les rassemblai près de la rivière qui coule en direction d’Ahava[c] et nous y avons campé pendant trois jours. Je passai le peuple et les prêtres en revue, et je constatai qu’il n’y avait parmi eux aucun lévite. 16 Alors je convoquai les chefs Eliézer, Ariel, Shemaya, Elnathan, Yarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie et Meshoullam, ainsi que les deux savants Yoyarib et Elnathan. 17 Je leur demandai de se rendre chez Iddo, le chef de la localité de Kasiphia[d], et je leur indiquai ce qu’ils devaient lui dire, à lui et à ses collaborateurs, les desservants du Temple qui se trouvaient à Kasiphia, pour nous envoyer des assistants pour le temple de notre Dieu. 18 Et comme notre Dieu était avec nous et nous témoignait sa bonté, ils nous amenèrent Shérébia, un homme avisé d’entre les descendants de Mahli, descendant de Lévi, lui-même fils d’Israël, accompagné de dix-huit hommes de sa parenté, dont ses fils, 19 ainsi que Hashabia et Esaïe, descendants de Merari, avec vingt hommes de leur parenté dont leurs fils. 20 Ils ramenèrent également 220 desservants du Temple, descendants de ceux que David et ses ministres avaient nommés pour assister les lévites. Tous avaient été nommément désignés.
Jeûne et prière en vue du voyage
21 Là, au bord du fleuve Ahava, je proclamai un jeûne pour que nous nous humiliions devant notre Dieu afin de lui demander qu’il nous accorde, pour nous, pour nos enfants et pour tous nos biens, de voyager en toute sécurité. 22 J’aurais eu honte de demander à l’empereur de nous fournir une escorte de soldats et de cavaliers pour nous protéger contre l’ennemi pendant la route, car nous avions dit à l’empereur que notre Dieu protégeait avec bonté tous ceux qui lui font confiance, tandis que sa colère pèse lourdement sur tous ceux qui l’abandonnent. 23 C’est pour cela que nous avons jeûné et demandé cette faveur à notre Dieu, et il a exaucé notre prière.
Les biens destinés au Temple sont confiés à des prêtres
24 Ensuite, je désignai comme chefs douze des principaux prêtres, Shérébia, Hashabia et dix de leurs compagnons. 25 Je pesai devant eux l’argent, l’or et les objets de valeur offerts pour le Temple par l’empereur, ses conseillers et ses ministres, ainsi que par tous les Israélites qui se trouvaient à Babylone. 26 Je leur confiai ainsi vingt tonnes d’argent, trois tonnes d’objets en argent et trois tonnes d’or, 27 vingt coupes d’or valant mille pièces d’or, deux magnifiques vases de bronze poli, aussi précieux que de l’or. 28 Puis je leur dis : Vous êtes consacrés à l’Eternel, ces objets sont sacrés, cet argent et cet or sont des dons volontaires à l’Eternel, le Dieu de vos ancêtres. 29 Veillez soigneusement sur ces trésors, ils sont sous votre garde jusqu’au jour où vous les pèserez devant les chefs des prêtres et les lévites, ainsi que devant les chefs des groupes familiaux d’Israël à Jérusalem, dans les locaux annexes du temple de l’Eternel[e].
30 Les prêtres et les lévites prirent l’or, l’argent et les objets de valeur qui avaient été pesés, pour les porter à Jérusalem au temple de notre Dieu.
L’arrivée à Jérusalem
31 Le douzième jour du premier mois, nous avons quitté le fleuve Ahava pour nous rendre à Jérusalem. Tout au long de la route, notre Dieu a pris soin de nous en nous protégeant des attaques d’ennemis et des embuscades des pillards.
32 A notre arrivée à Jérusalem, nous avons pris trois jours de repos. 33 Le quatrième jour, nous avons pesé l’argent, l’or et les objets de valeur dans le Temple, pour les remettre entre les mains de Merémoth, fils d’Urie, le prêtre ; il était accompagné d’Eléazar, fils de Phinéas, et des lévites Yozabad, fils de Josué, et Noadia, fils de Binnouï. 34 Tout fut compté et pesé et le poids total fut consigné par écrit à ce moment-là. 35 Les déportés qui revenaient d’exil offrirent alors en holocauste au Dieu d’Israël pour l’ensemble du peuple : 12 taureaux, 96 béliers, 77 agneaux et 12 boucs en sacrifice pour le péché. On offrit tous ces holocaustes à l’Eternel. 36 Puis ils transmirent le document contenant les décrets impériaux aux satrapes[f] de l’empereur et aux gouverneurs de la province à l’ouest de l’Euphrate. Ceux-ci accordèrent alors leur soutien au peuple pour la construction du temple de Dieu.

8 These are the family heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes:(A)
2 of the descendants of Phinehas, Gershom;
of the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel;
of the descendants of David, Hattush 3 of the descendants of Shekaniah;(B)
of the descendants of Parosh,(C) Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;
4 of the descendants of Pahath-Moab,(D) Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;
5 of the descendants of Zattu,[a] Shekaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;
6 of the descendants of Adin,(E) Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;
7 of the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;
8 of the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;
9 of the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;
10 of the descendants of Bani,[b] Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;
11 of the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;

The Return to Jerusalem
15 I assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava,(G) and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites(H) there. 16 So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning, 17 and I ordered them to go to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his fellow Levites, the temple servants(I) in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. 18 Because the gracious hand of our God was on us,(J) they brought us Sherebiah,(K) a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all; 19 and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 in all. 20 They also brought 220 of the temple servants(L)—a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.
21 There, by the Ahava Canal,(M) I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey(N) for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers(O) and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone(P) who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.(Q)” 23 So we fasted(R) and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.
24 Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah,(S) Hashabiah and ten of their brothers, 25 and I weighed out(T) to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisers, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God. 26 I weighed out to them 650 talents[c] of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents,[d] 100 talents[e] of gold, 27 20 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics,[f] and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.
28 I said to them, “You as well as these articles are consecrated to the Lord.(U) The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your ancestors. 29 Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel.” 30 Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.
31 On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal(V) to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us,(W) and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. 32 So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.(X)
33 On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out(Y) the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth(Z) son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad(AA) son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.(AB) 34 Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.
35 Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls(AC) for all Israel,(AD) ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering,[g] twelve male goats.(AE) All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36 They also delivered the king’s orders(AF) to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates,(AG) who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.(AH)

8 Now these are the heads of their fathers’ households, and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king:

3 Of the sons of Shecaniah, of the sons of Parosh, Zechariah; and with him were listed by genealogy of the males one hundred fifty.
4 Of the sons of Pahathmoab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah; and with him two hundred males.
5 Of the sons of Shecaniah, the son of Jahaziel; and with him three hundred males.
6 Of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan; and with him fifty males.
7 Of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah; and with him seventy males.
8 Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael; and with him eighty males.
9 Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel; and with him two hundred eighteen males.
10 Of the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah; and with him one hundred sixty males.
11 Of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah the son of Bebai; and with him twenty-eight males.

13 Of the sons of Adonikam, who were the last, their names are: Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah; and with them sixty males.
14 Of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and Zabbud; and with them seventy males.
15 I gathered them together to the river that runs to Ahava; and there we encamped three days. Then I looked around at the people and the priests, and found there were none of the sons of Levi. 16 Then I sent for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, for Elnathan, for Jarib, for Elnathan, for Nathan, for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib and for Elnathan, who were teachers. 17 I sent them out to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia; and I told them what they should tell Iddo and his brothers the temple servants at the place Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God. 18 According to the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen; 19 and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty; 20 and of the temple servants, whom David and the princes had given for the service of the Levites, two hundred twenty temple servants. All of them were mentioned by name.
21 Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a straight way for us, for our little ones, and for all our possessions. 22 For I was ashamed to ask of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the way, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is on all those who seek him, for good; but his power and his wrath is against all those who forsake him.” 23 So we fasted and begged our God for this, and he granted our request.
24 Then I set apart twelve of the chiefs of the priests, even Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers with them, 25 and weighed to them the silver, the gold, and the vessels, even the offering for the house of our God, which the king, his counselors, his princes, and all Israel there present, had offered. 26 I weighed into their hand six hundred fifty talents of silver,[a] one hundred talents of silver vessels, one hundred talents of gold, 27 twenty bowls of gold weighing one thousand darics,[b] and two vessels of fine bright bronze, precious as gold. 28 I said to them, “You are holy to Yahweh, and the vessels are holy. The silver and the gold are a free will offering to Yahweh, the God of your fathers. 29 Watch and keep them until you weigh them before the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and the princes of the fathers’ households of Israel at Jerusalem, in the rooms of Yahweh’s house.”
30 So the priests and the Levites received the weight of the silver, the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.
31 Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandits by the way. 32 We came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days. 33 On the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them were Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levites. 34 Everything was counted and weighed; and all the weight was written at that time.
35 The children of the captivity, who had come out of exile, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats for a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering to Yahweh. 36 They delivered the king’s commissions to the king’s local governors and to the governors beyond the River. So they supported the people and God’s house.
