Reedificación del templo
5 Los profetas Hageo(A) y Zacarías(B) hijo de Iddo hablaron a los judíos que vivían en Judá y en Jerusalén en el nombre del Dios de Israel, que velaba sobre ellos. 2 Entonces Zorobabel(C) hijo de Salatiel y Josué hijo de Josadac reiniciaron la reconstrución del templo de Dios en Jerusalén Los profetas de Dios los ayudaban.
3 Pero Tatenay, que era el gobernador del otro lado del río Éufrates, y Setar Bosnay y sus compañeros, fueron a verlos y les preguntaron:
«¿Quién les ha dado permiso para reconstruir el templo y para reforzar las murallas?»
4 También les preguntaron:
«¿Quiénes son los que dirigen las obras?»
5 Pero el Señor protegía a los ancianos judíos, y no les pudieron impedir que siguieran con la reconstrucción, hasta que el asunto fue llevado ante el rey Darío y hubo una respuesta por escrito. 6 Entonces Tatenay, gobernador del otro lado del río Éufrates, y Setar Bosnay y sus compañeros, que también gobernaban en esa región, enviaron una carta al rey Darío, 7 la cual decía:
«A Su Majestad el rey Darío. Paz.
8 »Debe saber Su Majestad que fuimos a la provincia de Judea y al templo del gran Dios, y vimos que el templo se está reconstruyendo con grandes bloques de piedra. Ya se han colocado las vigas del templo, y la obra avanza de prisa y con gran cuidado. 9 Llamamos a los dirigentes y les preguntamos: “¿Quién les dio permiso para reconstruir el templo y reforzar las murallas de la ciudad?”
10 »También preguntamos por el nombre de las personas responsables de la obra, para informar a Su Majestad, 11 y ellos respondieron: “Nosotros somos siervos del Dios del cielo y de la tierra, y estamos reconstruyendo el templo que hace muchos años edificó y concluyó el gran rey de Israel. 12 Como nuestros padres desobedecieron al Dios del cielo y de la tierra, él se enojó con su pueblo y los puso en manos del caldeo Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, el cual destruyó este templo y a nuestro pueblo se lo llevó cautivo a Babilonia.(D) 13 Pero durante el primer año del reinado de Ciro en Babilonia, él mismo ordenó que este templo de Dios fuera reconstruido.(E) 14 También ordenó que todos los utensilios de oro y de plata que por orden de Nabucodonosor fueron sacados del templo de Dios en Jerusalén, y que fueron llevados al templo de Babilonia, fueran entregados a Sesbasar, a quien había nombrado gobernador. 15 El rey Ciro en persona le dijo: ‘Toma estos utensilios y llévalos al templo en Jerusalén, y que el templo de Dios sea reconstruido en el mismo lugar.’ 16 En cumplimiento de las órdenes del rey Ciro, Sesbasar vino y echó los cimientos del templo de Dios en Jerusalén, y desde entonces hemos estado reconstruyendo, pero aún no terminamos. 17 Si a Su Majestad le parece bien, ordene buscar en los archivos de Babilonia hasta dar con una carta que tiene la orden del rey Ciro para reconstruir el templo de Dios en Jerusalén. Cuando ésta sea hallada, tenga a bien Su Majestad comunicarnos su voluntad al respecto.”»

Reprise de la construction du Temple
5 Aggée, le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d’Iddo, le prophète, prophétisèrent aux Juifs qui étaient en Juda et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël. 2 Alors Zorobabel, fils de Schealthiel, et Josué, fils de Jotsadak, se levèrent et commencèrent à bâtir la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Et avec eux étaient les prophètes de Dieu, qui les assistaient.
3 Dans ce même temps, Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve, Schethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues, vinrent auprès d’eux et leur parlèrent ainsi: Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs? 4 Ils leur dirent encore: Quels sont les noms des hommes qui construisent cet édifice? 5 Mais l’œil de Dieu veillait sur les anciens des Juifs. Et on laissa continuer les travaux pendant l’envoi d’un rapport à Darius et jusqu’à la réception d’une lettre sur cet objet.
6 Copie de la lettre envoyée au roi Darius par Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve, Schethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues d’Apharsac, demeurant de ce côté du fleuve. 7 Ils lui adressèrent un rapport ainsi conçu: Au roi Darius, salut!
8 Que le roi sache que nous sommes allés dans la province de Juda, à la maison du grand Dieu. Elle se construit en pierres de taille, et le bois se pose dans les murs; le travail marche rapidement et réussit entre leurs mains. 9 Nous avons interrogé les anciens, et nous leur avons ainsi parlé: Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs? 10 Nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour te les faire connaître, et nous avons mis par écrit les noms des hommes qui sont à leur tête. 11 Voici la réponse qu’ils nous ont faite: Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu des cieux et de la terre, et nous rebâtissons la maison qui avait été construite il y a bien des années; un grand roi d’Israël l’avait bâtie et achevée. 12 Mais après que nos pères eurent irrité le Dieu des cieux, il les livra entre les mains de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, le Chaldéen, qui détruisit cette maison et emmena le peuple captif à Babylone. 13 Toutefois, la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus donna l’ordre de rebâtir cette maison de Dieu. 14 Et même le roi Cyrus ôta du temple de Babylone les ustensiles d’or et d’argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nebucadnetsar avait enlevés du temple de Jérusalem et transportés dans le temple de Babylone, il les fit remettre au nommé Scheschbatsar, qu’il établit gouverneur, 15 et il lui dit: Prends ces ustensiles, va les déposer dans le temple de Jérusalem, et que la maison de Dieu soit rebâtie sur le lieu où elle était. 16 Ce Scheschbatsar est donc venu, et il a posé les fondements de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem; depuis lors jusqu’à présent elle se construit, et elle n’est pas achevée.
17 Maintenant, si le roi le trouve bon, que l’on fasse des recherches dans la maison des trésors du roi à Babylone, pour voir s’il y a eu de la part du roi Cyrus un ordre donné pour la construction de cette maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Puis, que le roi nous transmette sa volonté sur cet objet.

Tattenai’s Letter to Darius
5 Now Haggai(A) the prophet and Zechariah(B) the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied(C) to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel(D) son of Shealtiel and Joshua(E) son of Jozadak set to work(F) to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.
3 At that time Tattenai,(G) governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai(H) and their associates went to them and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(I) 4 They[a] also asked, “What are the names of those who are constructing this building?” 5 But the eye of their God(J) was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received.
6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius. 7 The report they sent him read as follows:
To King Darius:
Cordial greetings.
8 The king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and placing the timbers in the walls. The work(K) is being carried on with diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.
9 We questioned the elders and asked them, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(L) 10 We also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
11 This is the answer they gave us:
“We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple(M) that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished. 12 But because our ancestors angered(N) the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.(O)
13 “However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree(P) to rebuild this house of God. 14 He even removed from the temple[b] of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple[c] in Babylon.(Q) Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar,(R) whom he had appointed governor, 15 and he told him, ‘Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.’
16 “So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God(S) in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished.”
17 Now if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives(T) of Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.

Temple Work Resumed
5 When the prophets, (A)Haggai the prophet and (B)Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them, 2 then (C)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and (D)the prophets of God were with them supporting them.
3 At that time (E)Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the [a]River, and Shethar-bozenai and their colleagues came to them and spoke to them thus, “(F)Who issued you a decree to rebuild this [b]temple and to finish this structure?” 4 (G)Then we told them accordingly what the names of the men were who were reconstructing this building. 5 But (H)the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until a report could come to Darius, and then a written reply be returned concerning it.
Adversaries Write to Darius
6 This is the copy of the letter which (I)Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai and his colleagues (J)the officials, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king. 7 They sent a report to him in which it was written thus: “To Darius the king, all peace. 8 Let it be known to the king that we have gone to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is being built with huge stones, and [c]beams are being laid in the walls; and this work is going on with great care and is succeeding in their hands. 9 Then we asked those elders and said to them thus, ‘Who issued you a decree to rebuild this temple and to finish this structure?’ 10 We also asked them their names so as to inform you, and that we might write down the names of the men who were at their head. 11 Thus they [d]answered us, saying, ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, (K)which a great king of Israel built and finished. 12 But (L)because our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, (M)He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon. 13 However, (N)in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus (O)issued a decree to rebuild this house of God. 14 Also (P)the gold and silver utensils of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple [e]in Jerusalem, and brought them to the temple of Babylon, these King Cyrus took from the temple of Babylon and they were given to one (Q)whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor. 15 He said to him, “Take these utensils, go and deposit them in the temple [f]in Jerusalem and let the house of God be rebuilt in its place.” 16 Then that Sheshbazzar came and (R)laid the foundations of the house of God [g]in Jerusalem; and from then until now it has been under construction and it is (S)not yet completed.’ 17 “Now if it pleases the king, (T)let a search be conducted in the king’s treasure house, which is there in Babylon, if it be that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to rebuild this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send to us his decision concerning this matter.”
