18 And don’t get drunk(A) with wine,(B) which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit:(C) 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.(D)

Wives and Husbands

22 Wives,(E) submit[a](F) to your husbands(G) as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is the head of the wife(H) as Christ is the head(I) of the church. He is the Savior of the body.(J) 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives are to submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives,(K) just as Christ loved(L) the church and gave himself(M) for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her with the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.(N) 28 In the same way, husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, 30 since we are members of his body.[c] 31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,(O) and the two will become one flesh.[d](P) 32 This mystery(Q) is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.

Wives and Husbands

22 (H)Wives, (I)submit to your own husbands, (J)as to the Lord. 23 For (K)the husband is the head of the wife even as (L)Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is (M)himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit (N)in everything to their husbands.

25 (O)Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and (P)gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by (Q)the washing of water (R)with the word, 27 so (S)that he might present the church to himself in splendor, (T)without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.[a] 28 In the same way (U)husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because (V)we are members of his body. 31 (W)“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and (X)the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, (Y)let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she (Z)respects her husband.

18 Do not get drunk with wine, which will only ruin you; instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 (A)Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts. 20 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.

Wives and Husbands

21 Submit yourselves to one another because of your reverence for Christ.

22 (B)Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband has authority over his wife just as Christ has authority over the church; and Christ is himself the Savior of the church, his body. 24 And so wives must submit themselves completely to their husbands just as the church submits itself to Christ.

25 (C)Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it. 26 He did this to dedicate the church to God by his word, after making it clean by washing it in water, 27 in order to present the church to himself in all its beauty—pure and faultless, without spot or wrinkle or any other imperfection. 28 Men ought to love their wives just as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself. (29 None of us ever hate our own bodies. Instead, we feed them, and take care of them, just as Christ does the church; 30 for we are members of his body.) 31 (D)As the scripture says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.” 32 There is a deep secret truth revealed in this scripture, which I understand as applying to Christ and the church. 33 But it also applies to you: every husband must love his wife as himself, and every wife must respect her husband.

18 And (A)do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another (B)in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making (C)melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 (D)giving thanks always for all things to God the Father (E)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 (F)submitting to one another in the fear of [a]God.

Marriage—Christ and the Church(G)

22 Wives, (H)submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For (I)the husband is head of the wife, as also (J)Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands (K)in everything.

25 (L)Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and (M)gave Himself for her, 26 that He might [b]sanctify and cleanse her (N)with the washing of water (O)by the word, 27 (P)that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, (Q)not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For (R)we are members of His body, [c]of His flesh and of His bones. 31 (S)“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the (T)two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless (U)let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she (V)respects her husband.

Marriage like Christ and the Church

22 (M)Wives, (N)subject yourselves to your own husbands, (O)as to the Lord. 23 For (P)the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the (Q)head of the church, He Himself (R)being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

25 (S)Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and (T)gave Himself up for her, 26 (U)so that He might sanctify her, having (V)cleansed her by the (W)washing of water with (X)the word, 27 that He might (Y)present to Himself the church [e]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be (Z)holy and blameless. 28 So husbands also ought to (AA)love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are (AB)parts of His (AC)body. 31 (AD)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to (AE)love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she (AF)respects her husband.
