Deuteronomy 28
New English Translation

The Covenant Blessings

28 “If you indeed[a] obey the Lord your God and are careful to observe all his commandments I am giving[b] you today, the Lord your God will elevate you above all the nations of the earth. 2 All these blessings will come to you in abundance[c] if you obey the Lord your God: 3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the field.[d] 4 Your children[e] will be blessed, as well as the produce of your soil, the offspring of your livestock, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks. 5 Your basket and your mixing bowl will be blessed. 6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.[f] 7 The Lord will cause your enemies who attack[g] you to be struck down before you; they will attack you from one direction[h] but flee from you in seven different directions. 8 The Lord will decree blessing for you with respect to your barns and in everything you do—yes, he will bless you in the land he[i] is giving you. 9 The Lord will designate you as his holy people just as he promised you, if you keep his commandments[j] and obey him.[k] 10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you belong to the Lord,[l] and they will respect you. 11 The Lord will greatly multiply your children,[m] the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your soil in the land that he[n] promised your ancestors[o] he would give you. 12 The Lord will open for you his good treasure house, the heavens, to give you rain for the land in its season and to bless all you do;[p] you will lend to many nations but you will not borrow from any. 13 The Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always end up at the top and not at the bottom, if you obey his[q] commandments that I am urging[r] you today to be careful to do. 14 But you must not turn away from all the commandments I am giving[s] you today, to either the right or left, nor pursue other gods and worship[t] them.

Curses as Reversal of Blessings

15 “But if you ignore[u] the Lord your God and are not careful to keep all his commandments and statutes I am giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you in full force:[v] 16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the field. 17 Your basket and your mixing bowl will be cursed. 18 Your children[w] will be cursed, as well as the produce of your soil, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks. 19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.[x]

Curses by Disease and Drought

20 “The Lord will send on you a curse, confusing you and opposing you[y] in everything you undertake[z] until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of the evil of your deeds, in that you have forsaken me.[aa] 21 The Lord will plague you with deadly diseases[ab] until he has completely removed you from the land you are about to possess. 22 He[ac] will afflict you with weakness,[ad] fever, inflammation, infection,[ae] sword,[af] blight, and mildew; these will attack you until you perish. 23 The[ag] sky[ah] above your heads will be bronze and the earth beneath you iron. 24 The Lord will make the rain of your land powder and dust; it will come down on you from the sky until you are destroyed.

Curses by Defeat and Deportation

25 “The Lord will allow you to be struck down before your enemies; you will attack them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions and will become an object of terror[ai] to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 Your carcasses will be food for every bird of the sky and wild animal of the earth, and there will be no one to chase them off. 27 The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, eczema, and scabies, all of which cannot be healed. 28 The Lord will also subject you to madness, blindness, and confusion of mind.[aj] 29 You will feel your way along at noon like the blind person does in darkness and you will not succeed in anything you do;[ak] you will be constantly oppressed and continually robbed, with no one to save you. 30 You will be engaged to a woman, and another man will rape[al] her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not even begin to use it. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your very eyes, but you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be stolen from you as you watch and will not be returned to you. Your flock of sheep will be given to your enemies, and there will be no one to save you. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another people while you look on in vain all day, and you will be powerless to do anything about it.[am] 33 As for the produce of your land and all your labor, a people you do not know will consume it, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives. 34 You will go insane from seeing all this. 35 The Lord will afflict you in your knees and on your legs with painful, incurable boils—from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. 36 The Lord will force you and your king[an] whom you will appoint over you to go away to a people whom you and your ancestors have not known, and you will serve other gods of wood and stone there. 37 You will become an occasion of horror, a proverb, and an object of ridicule to all the peoples to whom the Lord will drive you.

The Curse of Reversed Status

38 “You will take much seed to the field but gather little harvest, because locusts will consume it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them. 40 You will have olive trees throughout your territory, but you will not anoint yourself with olive oil, because the olives will drop off the trees while still unripe.[ao] 41 You will bear sons and daughters but not keep them, because they will be taken into captivity. 42 Whirring locusts[ap] will take over every tree and all the produce of your soil. 43 The resident foreigners[aq] who reside among you will become higher and higher over you, and you will become lower and lower. 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them; they will become the head, and you will become the tail!

45 “All these curses will fall on you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the Lord your God by keeping his commandments and statutes that he has given[ar] you. 46 These curses[as] will be a perpetual sign and wonder with reference to you and your descendants.[at]

The Curse of Military Siege

47 “Because you have not served the Lord your God joyfully and wholeheartedly with the abundance of everything you have, 48 instead in hunger, thirst, nakedness, and poverty[au] you will serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you. They[av] will place an iron yoke on your neck until they have destroyed you. 49 The Lord will raise up a distant nation against you, one from the other side of the earth[aw] as the eagle flies,[ax] a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of stern appearance that will have no regard for the elderly or pity for the young. 51 They[ay] will devour the offspring of your livestock and the produce of your soil until you are destroyed. They will not leave you with any grain, new wine, olive oil, calves of your herds,[az] or lambs of your flocks[ba] until they have destroyed you. 52 They will besiege all of your villages[bb] until all of your high and fortified walls collapse—those in which you put your confidence throughout the land. They will besiege all your villages throughout the land the Lord your God has given you. 53 You will then eat your own offspring,[bc] the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you, because of the severity of the siege[bd] by which your enemies will constrict you. 54 The man among you who is by nature tender and sensitive will turn against his brother, his beloved wife, and his remaining children. 55 He will withhold from all of them his children’s flesh that he is eating (since there is nothing else left), because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict[be] you in your villages. 56 Likewise, the most[bf] tender and delicate of your women, who would never think of putting even the sole of her foot on the ground because of her daintiness,[bg] will turn against her beloved husband, her sons and daughters, 57 and will secretly eat her afterbirth[bh] and her newborn children[bi] (since she has nothing else),[bj] because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict you in your villages.

The Curse of Covenant Termination

58 “If you refuse to obey[bk] all the words of this law, the things written in this scroll, and refuse to fear this glorious and awesome name, the Lord your God, 59 then the Lord will increase your punishments and those of your descendants—great and long-lasting afflictions and severe, enduring illnesses. 60 He will infect you with all the diseases of Egypt[bl] that you dreaded, and they will persistently afflict you.[bm] 61 Moreover, the Lord will bring upon you every kind of sickness and plague not mentioned in this scroll of commandments,[bn] until you have perished. 62 There will be very few of you left, though at one time you were as numerous as the stars in the sky,[bo] because you will have disobeyed[bp] the Lord your God. 63 This is what will happen: Just as the Lord delighted to do good for you and make you numerous, so he[bq] will also take delight in destroying and decimating you. You will be uprooted from the land you are about to possess. 64 The Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods of wood and stone. 65 Among those nations you will have no rest, nor will there be a place of peaceful rest for the soles of your feet, for there the Lord will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a spirit of despair. 66 Your life will hang in doubt before you; you will be terrified by night and day and will have no certainty of surviving from one day to the next.[br] 67 In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ And in the evening you will say, ‘I wish it were morning!’ because of the things you will fear and the things you will see. 68 Then the Lord will make you return to Egypt by ship, over a route I said to you that you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Whether the flowers drop off without being fertilized, or the olives drop off while unripe, the harvest is lost.
  42. Deuteronomy 28:42 tn The Hebrew term denotes some sort of buzzing or whirring insect; some have understood this to be a type of locust (KJV, NIV, CEV), but other insects have also been suggested: “buzzing insects” (NAB); “the cricket” (NASB); “the cicada” (NRSV).
  43. Deuteronomy 28:43 tn Heb “the foreigner.” This is a collective singular and has therefore been translated as plural; this includes the pronouns in the following verse, which are also singular in the Hebrew text.

49 “耶和華必從遠方，從地極把一國的民帶來，像鷹一般飛來攻擊你；這民的語言你不會聽； 50 這民臉無羞恥，不顧老年人的情面，也不恩待青年人。 51 他們必吞吃你牲畜所生的和你土地所產的，直到把你消滅；必不給你留下五穀、新酒和油、幼小的牛，以及肥嫩的羊，直到使你滅亡為止。 52 他們必把你圍困在你的各城裡，直到在你的全境內你所倚靠高大和堅固的城牆都被攻陷；他們必把你圍困在耶和華你的　神賜給你的全地的各城裡。 53 你在仇敵圍困和窘迫你的時候，要吃你身所生的，就是吃耶和華你的　神賜給你的兒女的肉。 54 你們中間溫柔嫩弱的男人，必敵視自己的兄弟、懷中的妻子和餘剩的兒女； 55 甚至在你的仇敵圍困和窘迫你在各城裡的時候，他要吃自己兒女的肉，卻不肯分給他們任何人，因為他沒有甚麼剩下的。 56 你們中間溫柔嬌嫩的婦人，素來因為溫柔嬌嫩不肯把腳掌踏在地上，現在必敵視自己懷中的丈夫和自己的兒女。 57 她暗中把自己兩腿之間出來的胞衣，和自己生的兒女吃掉，因為在你的仇敵圍困和窘迫你在各城裡的時候，她甚麼都沒有了。

58 “如果你不謹守遵行寫在這書上的這律法的一切話，不敬畏這榮耀和可畏的名，就是耶和華你的　神， 59 耶和華就必使你和你的後裔遭受奇災，就是大而長久的災，毒而長久的病。 60 他必使你懼怕的埃及人的各種疾病都臨到你身上，緊緊地纏著你。 61 又把這律法書上沒有記載的各樣災病，都降在你身上，直到你被消滅。 62 你們以前雖然像天上的星那麼多，現在剩下的人數卻寥寥可數，因為你不聽從耶和華你的　神的話。 63 先前耶和華怎樣喜歡使你們得好處，使你們人數眾多，將來也必怎樣喜歡把你們滅亡，把你們消滅；你們必從要進去得為業的地上被拔除。 64 耶和華必使你分散在萬民中，從地的這邊到地的那邊；在那裡你要事奉你和你的列祖不認識的別的神，就是木頭和石頭做的神。 65 在那些國中，你必不得安息，也沒有腳掌歇息的地方；耶和華卻必使你在那裡心中發顫，眼目憔悴，精神頹廢。 66 你未來的生命必懸而不定；你必晝夜恐懼，生命難保。 67 因你心裡的懼怕驚恐和你眼中看見的景象，早晨你必說：‘但願現在是晚上！’晚上你必說：‘但願現在是早晨！’ 68 耶和華必用船把你送回埃及去，走我曾經告訴你，你不得再見的那條路；在那裡你們必賣身給你的仇敵作奴僕和作婢女，卻沒有人買。”

Bendiciones de la obediencia(A)

28 »Si tú escuchas con atención la voz del Señor tu Dios, y cumples y pones en práctica todos los mandamientos que hoy te mando cumplir, el Señor tu Dios te exaltará sobre todas las naciones de la tierra. 2 Si escuchas la voz del Señor tu Dios, todas estas bendiciones vendrán sobre ti, y te alcanzarán:

3 »Bendito serás tú en la ciudad, y bendito en el campo.

4 »Bendito será el fruto de tu vientre, el fruto de tu tierra, el fruto de tus bestias, y las crías de tus vacas y los rebaños de tus ovejas.

5 »Benditas serán tu canasta y tu artesa de amasar.

6 »Bendito serás cuando entres, y bendito cuando salgas.

7 »El Señor derrotará a tus enemigos que se levanten contra ti. Por un camino saldrán contra ti, y por siete caminos huirán de ti.

8 »El Señor enviará su bendición sobre tus graneros y sobre todo aquello en que pongas tu mano, y te bendecirá en la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te da.

9 »El Señor te confirmará como su pueblo santo, tal y como te lo ha jurado, siempre y cuando cumplas los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios, y sigas sus caminos. 10 Todos los pueblos de la tierra verán que el nombre del Señor es invocado sobre ti, y te temerán.

11 »En el país que el Señor juró a tus padres que te daría, el Señor hará que sobreabundes en bienes, y en el fruto de tu vientre, y en el fruto de tus animales, y en el fruto de tu tierra.

12 »El Señor te abrirá su tesoro de bondad, que es el cielo, y en su tiempo te enviará la lluvia a tu tierra, y bendecirá todo lo que hagas con tus manos. Harás préstamos a muchas naciones, pero tú no pedirás prestado nada.

13 »El Señor te pondrá por cabeza, no por cola. Estarás por encima de todo, nunca por debajo, siempre y cuando obedezcas y cumplas los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios, que hoy te ordeno cumplir, 14 y siempre y cuando no te apartes ni a diestra ni a siniestra de todas las palabras que hoy te mando cumplir, ni vayas en pos de dioses ajenos y les sirvas.(B)

Consecuencias de la desobediencia(C)

15 »Si no oyes la voz del Señor tu Dios ni procuras cumplir todos los mandamientos y estatutos que hoy te mando cumplir, vendrán sobre ti, y te alcanzarán, todas estas maldiciones:

16 »Maldito serás tú en la ciudad, y maldito en el campo.

17 »Maldita será tu canasta, y tu tabla de amasar.

18 »Maldito será el fruto de tu vientre, el fruto de tu tierra, las crías de tus vacas y los rebaños de tus ovejas.

19 »Maldito serás cuando entres, y maldito serás cuando salgas.

20 »El Señor enviará contra ti maldición, quebranto y asombro en todo lo que emprendas, hasta que de pronto seas destruido y perezcas por causa de la maldad de tus obras, por las cuales lo hayas dejado.

21 »El Señor traerá sobre ti mortandad hasta consumirte en la tierra de la cual vas a tomar posesión.

22 »El Señor te herirá con tisis y con fiebre, con inflamación y ardores, con sequía y calamidad repentina, y con hongos, los cuales te perseguirán hasta que perezcas. 23 Los cielos que cubren tu cabeza serán como el bronce, y la tierra que pisas será como el hierro. 24 En vez de lluvia, el Señor enviará polvo y ceniza a tu tierra, y desde los cielos caerán sobre ti hasta que perezcas.

25 »El Señor hará que seas derrotado delante de tus enemigos. Por un camino saldrás contra ellos, y por siete caminos huirás de ellos, y todos los reinos de la tierra te humillarán. 26 Tus cadáveres servirán de comida a todas las aves del cielo y a todas las fieras de la tierra, y no habrá quien las espante.

27 »El Señor te herirá con las úlceras de Egipto, y con tumores, sarna y comezón, y no podrás ser curado.

28 »El Señor te herirá con locura, ceguera y confusión. 29 A plena luz del día andarás a tientas, como ciego, y no tendrás éxito en lo que hagas; al contrario, en todo momento serás oprimido y despojado, sin que haya quien te salve. 30 Te comprometerás en matrimonio, pero otro hombre se acostará con tu prometida; construirás una casa, pero nunca llegarás a habitarla; plantarás viñas, pero nunca disfrutarás de sus uvas. 31 Ante tus propios ojos matarán a tu buey, pero tú no comerás de su carne; ante tus propios ojos te arrebatarán tu asno, y jamás te lo devolverán; tus ovejas serán entregadas a tus enemigos, y tú no podrás impedirlo. 32 Ante tus propios ojos tus hijos y tus hijas serán entregados a otra gente, y tú no podrás impedirlo, y día tras día tus ojos desfallecerán esperando que vuelvan. 33 Gente que jamás conociste se comerá el fruto de tu tierra y de todo tu trabajo, y día tras día serás oprimido y quebrantado. 34 Lo que veas con tus ojos te hará perder el juicio.

35 »El Señor te herirá con pústula maligna en las rodillas y en las piernas, y desde la planta del pie hasta la coronilla, y no podrás ser sanado.

36 »El Señor te llevará a ti, y al rey que hayas puesto para que te gobierne, a una nación que ni tú ni tus padres conocieron, y allá servirás a dioses ajenos de palo y de piedra. 37 Serás motivo de horror, y objeto de comentarios y de burlas de todos los pueblos a donde el Señor te lleve. 38 Sembrarás mucha semilla en el campo, y cosecharás muy poco, porque la langosta la consumirá. 39 Plantarás viñas, y las cultivarás, pero no vendimiarás las uvas ni beberás el vino, porque los gusanos se las comerán. 40 Tendrás olivos por todo tu territorio, pero no te ungirás con el aceite, porque las aceitunas se caerán. 41 Tendrás hijos e hijas, pero no los retendrás, porque serán llevados en cautiverio. 42 Todos tus árboles y todos los frutos de tu tierra serán consumidos por la langosta. 43 Los extranjeros que vivan en tus ciudades se alzarán por encima de ti, mientras que tú caerás muy bajo. 44 Ellos te harán préstamos, pero tú no podrás prestarles nada; ellos serán la cabeza, y tú serás la cola.

45 »Todas estas maldiciones vendrán sobre ti, y te perseguirán y te alcanzarán hasta acabar contigo, por no haber atendido a la voz del Señor tu Dios para cumplir los mandamientos y los estatutos que él te mandó cumplir, 46 y para siempre serán en ti y en tu descendencia una señal y una prueba.

47 »Puesto que no serviste al Señor tu Dios con alegría y con gozo de corazón cuando él te dio abundancia de todo, 48 acabarás siendo esclavo de los enemigos que el Señor envíe contra ti; sufrirás de hambre y de sed, y carecerás de ropa y de todas las cosas. ¡El Señor pondrá sobre tu cuello un yugo de hierro, hasta destruirte!

49 »De muy lejos, del otro extremo de la tierra, el Señor traerá contra ti una nación que vuela como el águila. Es una nación cuya lengua no entiendes, 50 gente de rostro feroz, que no respeta a los ancianos ni perdona a los niños. 51 Y se comerá las crías de tus ganados y los frutos de tu tierra, hasta hacerte perecer. No te dejará nada de trigo, ni de mosto, ni de aceite, ni una sola cría de tus vacas ni de los rebaños de tus ovejas, hasta que te haya destruido. 52 Sitiará todas las ciudades de tu tierra, hasta derribar esas altas y sólidas murallas en las que tú confías. Sitiará todas tus ciudades y toda la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te ha dado. 53 Durante el sitio, y en la desesperación y la angustia ante el enemigo, te comerás el fruto de tu vientre, ¡la carne de tus propios hijos e hijas que el Señor tu Dios te dio! 54 Aun los más sensibles y delicados de tus hombres mirarán con malos ojos a su hermano, y a la mujer amada, y al resto de sus hijos que le queden, 55 y no querrá compartir con ellos la carne de sus hijos. Porque durante el asedio será tal la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá en todas tus ciudades, que la gente se comerá a sus propios hijos por no haber ya nada qué comer. 56 La mujer más tierna y delicada entre ustedes, que por ser tan tierna y delicada jamás intentaría posar la planta de su pie sobre la tierra, mirará con malos ojos a su esposo amado, y a su hijo y a su hija, 57 y hasta al hijo que acaba de dar a luz, y se los comerá(D) a escondidas, pues durante el asedio a tus ciudades, y en medio de la angustia y opresión del enemigo, habrá carencia de todo.

58 »Si no tienes cuidado de poner por obra todas las palabras de esta ley escritas en este libro, ni temes este nombre glorioso y temible: EL SEÑOR TU DIOS, 59 entonces el Señor aumentará en gran manera tus plagas y las plagas de tu descendencia, plagas grandes y permanentes, y enfermedades malignas y duraderas, 60 y traerá sobre ti todos los males de Egipto, delante de los cuales temiste, y no te dejarán en paz. 61 Así mismo, el Señor enviará sobre ti toda enfermedad y toda plaga no escrita en el libro de esta ley, hasta que seas destruido. 62 En lugar de haber sido innumerables como las estrellas del cielo, muy pocos de ustedes sobrevivirán, por no haber obedecido a la voz del Señor su Dios. 63 Y así como el Señor se alegraba de hacerles bien y de multiplicarlos, así se alegrará de arruinarlos y destruirlos. ¡Serán arrancados de la tierra de la cual van a tomar posesión!

64 »El Señor te esparcirá por todos los pueblos, de un extremo al otro de la tierra; allí servirás a dioses ajenos de madera y de piedra, que ni tú ni tus padres conocieron jamás. 65 Ni siquiera entre estas naciones descansarás, ni la planta de tu pie hallará reposo, pues allí el Señor te dará un corazón temeroso, y tus ojos desfallecerán y tu ánimo decaerá; 66 tu vida estará en constante peligro, y el miedo te dominará noche y día, y no tendrás la vida segura. 67 Será tal el miedo que dominará tu corazón, y tan terrible lo que verán tus ojos, que por la mañana dirás: “¡Cómo quisiera que ya fuera tarde!”, y por la tarde dirás: “¡Cómo quisiera que ya fuera otro día!”

68 »El Señor te hará volver a Egipto en naves, por el camino por el cual te había dicho que nunca más volverías, y allí ustedes serán vendidos a sus enemigos como esclavos y esclavas, ¡y no habrá nadie que los compre!»
