King Sihon Defeated(A)

26 “And I (B)sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, (C)with words of peace, saying, 27 (D)‘Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the road, and I will turn neither to the right nor to the left. 28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink; (E)only let me pass through on foot, 29 (F)just as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land which the Lord our God is giving us.’

30 (G)“But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for (H)the Lord your God (I)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as it is this day.

31 “And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to (J)give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it, that you may inherit his land.’ 32 (K)Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz. 33 And (L)the Lord our God delivered him [a]over to us; so (M)we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. 34 We took all his cities at that time, and we (N)utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining. 35 We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we took. 36 (O)From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from (P)the city that is in the ravine, as far as Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; (Q)the Lord our God delivered all to us. 37 Only you did not go near the land of the people of Ammon—anywhere along the River (R)Jabbok, or to the cities of the mountains, or (S)wherever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

King Og Defeated(T)

“Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan; and (U)Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle (V)at Edrei. And the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand; you shall do to him as you did to (W)Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.’

“So the Lord our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan, with all his people, and we [b]attacked him until he had no survivors remaining. And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, (X)all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns. And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king (Y)of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as booty for ourselves.

“And at that time we took the (Z)land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were on this side of the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount (AA)Hermon (the Sidonians call (AB)Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10 (AC)all the cities of the plain, all Gilead, and (AD)all Bashan, as far as Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 (AE)“For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of (AF)the [c]giants. Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not in (AG)Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit.

26 (A)So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land; I will [a]travel only on the road. I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28 You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, (B)only let me pass through on [b]foot, 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in (C)Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving us.’ 30 But (D)Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass [c]through his land; for the (E)Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to hand him over to you, as he is today. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to turn Sihon and his land over [d]to you. Begin taking possession, so that you may possess his land.’

32 “Then Sihon came out [e]with all his people to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 And (F)the Lord our God turned him over [f]to us, and we [g](G)defeated him with his sons and all his people. 34 So we captured all his cities at that time and [h](H)utterly destroyed [i]the men, women, and children of every city. We left no survivor. 35 We took (I)only the animals as our plunder, and the spoils of the cities which we had captured. 36 From (J)Aroer which is on the edge of the [j]Valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the [k]valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too [l]high for us; the Lord our God turned it all over [m]to us. 37 (K)Only you did not go near the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the [n]river (L)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the Lord our God had commanded us to avoid.

Conquests Recounted

(M)Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og, king of Bashan, came out [o]with all his people to meet us in battle at Edrei. But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have handed him and all his people and his land over to you; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’ So the Lord our God also handed over to us Og, king of Bashan, with all his people, and we struck [p]them until no survivor was [q]left. We captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of (N)Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many [r]unwalled towns. We [s]utterly destroyed them, as we did to (O)Sihon king of Heshbon, [t](P)utterly destroying [u]the men, women, and children of every city. (Q)But all the animals and the spoils of the cities we took as our plunder.

(R)So at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the [v]Valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon (Sidonians (S)call Hermon (T)Sirion, and the Amorites call it (U)Senir): 10 all the cities of the plateau, all Gilead, and (V)all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the (W)Rephaim. Behold, his [w]bed was a [x]bed of iron; it is in (X)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was nine cubits, and its width four cubits by [y]the usual cubit.)
