Bendiciones de la obediencia

28 »(A)Y sucederá que si obedeces diligentemente al[a] Señor tu Dios, cuidando de cumplir todos Sus mandamientos que yo te mando hoy, el Señor tu Dios te pondrá en alto sobre todas las naciones de la tierra(B). 2 Y todas estas bendiciones vendrán sobre ti y te alcanzarán(C), si obedeces al[b] Señor tu Dios: 3 Bendito serás en la ciudad, y bendito serás en el campo(D). 4 Bendito el fruto de tu vientre, el producto[c] de tu suelo, el fruto de tu ganado, el aumento de tus vacas y las crías de tus ovejas. 5 Benditas serán tu canasta y tu artesa. 6 Bendito serás cuando entres, y bendito serás cuando salgas(E).

7 »El Señor hará que los enemigos que se levanten contra ti sean derrotados[d] delante de ti; saldrán contra ti por un camino y huirán delante de ti por siete caminos. 8 El Señor mandará que la bendición sea contigo en tus graneros y en todo aquello en que pongas tu mano(F), y te bendecirá en la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te da. 9 Te establecerá el Señor como pueblo santo para sí(G), como te juró, si guardas los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios y andas en Sus caminos. 10 Entonces verán todos los pueblos de la tierra que sobre ti es invocado[e] el nombre del Señor(H); y te temerán.

11 »El Señor te hará abundar en bienes, en el fruto de tu vientre, en el fruto de tu ganado y en el producto[f] de tu suelo(I), en la tierra que el Señor juró a tus padres que te daría. 12 El Señor abrirá para ti Su buen tesoro, los cielos, para dar lluvia a tu tierra a su tiempo y para bendecir toda la obra de tu mano(J); y tú prestarás a muchas naciones, pero no tomarás prestado. 13 El Señor te pondrá a la cabeza y no a la cola, solo estarás encima y nunca estarás debajo, si escuchas los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios que te ordeno hoy, para que los guardes cuidadosamente[g](K). 14 No te desvíes de ninguna de las palabras que te ordeno hoy, ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda(L), para ir tras otros dioses y servirles.

Consecuencias de la desobediencia

15 »(M)Pero sucederá que si no obedeces al[h] Señor tu Dios, y no guardas todos Sus mandamientos y estatutos que hoy te ordeno, vendrán sobre ti todas estas maldiciones y te alcanzarán:

16 »Maldito serás en la ciudad, y maldito serás en el campo(N).

17 »Malditas serán tu canasta y tu artesa(O).

18 »Maldito el fruto de tu vientre y el producto[i] de tu suelo, el aumento de tu ganado y las crías de tu rebaño(P).

19 »Maldito serás cuando entres y maldito serás cuando salgas(Q).

20 »El Señor enviará sobre ti maldición, confusión y censura en todo lo que emprendas[j](R), hasta que seas destruido y hasta que perezcas rápidamente(S), a causa de la maldad de tus hechos, porque me has abandonado. 21 El Señor hará que la peste se te pegue hasta que te haya consumido de sobre la tierra adonde vas a entrar para poseerla(T). 22 Te herirá el Señor de tisis, de fiebre(U), de inflamación y de gran ardor, con la espada[k], con pestes y plagas(V); y te perseguirán hasta que perezcas(W). 23 El cielo que está encima de tu cabeza será de bronce, y la tierra que está debajo de ti, de hierro. 24 El Señor hará que la lluvia de tu tierra sea polvo y ceniza; descenderá del cielo sobre ti hasta que seas destruido(X). 25 El Señor hará que seas derrotado[l] delante de tus enemigos(Y); saldrás contra ellos por un camino, pero huirás por siete caminos delante de ellos, y serás ejemplo de terror para todos los reinos de la tierra(Z).

26 »Y tus cadáveres serán alimento para todas las aves del cielo y para los animales de la tierra, y no habrá nadie que los espante(AA).

27 »El Señor te herirá con los tumores de Egipto y con úlceras, sarna y comezón, de los que no podrás ser sanado(AB). 28 Te herirá el Señor con locura, con ceguera y con turbación de corazón[m]; 29 y andarás a tientas a mediodía como el ciego anda a tientas en la oscuridad(AC), y no serás prosperado en tus caminos; más bien serás oprimido y robado continuamente, sin que nadie te salve. 30 Te desposarás con una mujer, pero otro hombre se acostará con ella(AD); edificarás una casa, pero no habitarás en ella; plantarás una viña, pero no aprovecharás su fruto[n](AE). 31 Tu buey será degollado delante de tus ojos, pero no comerás de él; tu asno será arrebatado, y no te será devuelto; tu oveja será dada a tus enemigos, y no tendrás quien te salve. 32 Tus hijos y tus hijas serán dados a otro pueblo(AF), mientras tus ojos miran y desfallecen por ellos continuamente, pero no habrá nada que puedas hacer[o]. 33 Un pueblo que no conoces comerá el producto de tu suelo y de todo tu trabajo, y no serás más que un pueblo oprimido y quebrantado todos los días(AG). 34 Y te volverás loco por lo que verán tus ojos[p]. 35 Te herirá el Señor en las rodillas y en las piernas con llagas malignas de las que no podrás ser sanado(AH), desde la planta de tu pie hasta la coronilla.

36 »El Señor te llevará a ti y a tu rey, al que hayas puesto sobre ti, a una nación que ni tú ni tus padres han conocido(AI), y allí servirás a otros dioses de madera y de piedra(AJ). 37 Y vendrás a ser motivo de horror, proverbio y burla entre todos los pueblos donde el Señor te lleve(AK).

38 »Sacarás mucha semilla al campo, pero recogerás poco(AL), porque la langosta la devorará(AM). 39 Plantarás y cultivarás viñas, pero no beberás del vino ni recogerás las uvas(AN), porque el gusano se las comerá. 40 Tendrás olivos por todo tu territorio pero no te ungirás con el aceite, porque tus aceitunas se caerán(AO). 41 Tendrás[q] hijos e hijas, pero no serán tuyos(AP), porque irán al cautiverio. 42 Todos tus árboles y el fruto de tu suelo los consumirá[r] la langosta[s](AQ).

43 »El extranjero que esté en medio de ti se elevará sobre ti cada vez más alto, pero tú descenderás cada vez más bajo(AR). 44 Él te prestará, pero tú no le podrás prestar(AS). Él será la cabeza y tú serás la cola(AT).

45 »Todas estas maldiciones vendrán sobre ti y te perseguirán y te alcanzarán hasta que seas destruido(AU), porque tú no escuchaste la voz del Señor tu Dios, y no guardaste los mandamientos y estatutos que Él te mandó. 46 Ellas serán señal y maravilla(AV) sobre ti y sobre tu descendencia[t] para siempre. 47 Por cuanto no serviste al Señor tu Dios con alegría y con gozo de corazón, cuando tenías[u] la abundancia de todas las cosas(AW), 48 por tanto servirás a tus enemigos, los cuales el Señor enviará contra ti: en hambre, en sed, en desnudez y en escasez de todas las cosas(AX). Él pondrá yugo de hierro sobre tu cuello(AY) hasta que te haya destruido.

49 »El Señor levantará contra ti una nación de lejos, desde el extremo de la tierra(AZ), que descenderá veloz como águila(BA), una nación cuya lengua no entenderás(BB), 50 una nación de rostro fiero que no tendrá respeto al anciano(BC) ni tendrá compasión del niño[v]. 51 Se comerá la cría[w] de tu ganado y el fruto de tu suelo, hasta que seas destruido; tampoco te dejará grano, ni vino nuevo, ni aceite, ni el aumento de tu ganado, ni las crías de tu rebaño, hasta que te haya hecho perecer.

52 »Y esa nación te pondrá sitio en todas tus ciudades[x], hasta que tus muros altos y fortificados en los cuales tú confiabas caigan por toda tu tierra; y te sitiará en todas tus ciudades[y](BD), por toda la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te ha dado. 53 Entonces comerás el fruto de tu vientre, la carne de tus hijos y de tus hijas(BE) que el Señor tu Dios te ha dado, en el asedio y en la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá[z]. 54 El hombre que es tierno[aa] y muy delicado en medio de ti, será hostil[ab] hacia su hermano, hacia la mujer que ama[ac] y hacia el resto de sus hijos que le queden, 55 y no dará a ninguno de ellos nada de la carne de sus hijos que se comerá, ya que no le quedará nada en el asedio y en la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá[ad] en todas tus ciudades[ae]. 56 La mujer tierna[af] y delicada en medio tuyo, que no osaría poner la planta de su pie en tierra por ser delicada y tierna, será hostil[ag] hacia el esposo que ama[ah], también hacia su hijo, hacia su hija(BF), 57 hacia la placenta que salga de su seno[ai] y hacia los hijos que dé a luz(BG); porque se los comerá en secreto por falta de otra cosa, en el asedio y en la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá[aj] en tus ciudades[ak].

58 »Si no cuidas de poner en práctica todas las palabras de esta ley que están escritas en este libro, temiendo[al] este nombre glorioso y temible(BH), el Señor tu Dios(BI), 59 entonces el Señor hará horribles tus plagas y las plagas de tus descendientes[am], plagas severas[an] y duraderas, y enfermedades perniciosas y crónicas. 60 Y traerá de nuevo sobre ti todas las enfermedades de Egipto(BJ) de las cuales tenías temor, y no te dejarán[ao].

61 »También el Señor traerá sobre ti toda enfermedad y toda plaga que no están escritas en el libro de esta ley, hasta que seas destruido(BK). 62 Entonces quedarán pocos de ustedes en número, aunque eran multitud como las estrellas del cielo(BL), porque no obedeciste al[ap] Señor tu Dios. 63 Y sucederá que tal como el Señor se deleitaba en ustedes para prosperarlos y multiplicarlos(BM), así el Señor se deleitará en ustedes para hacerlos perecer y destruirlos(BN); y serán arrancados de la tierra en la cual entran para poseerla(BO).

64 »Además, el Señor te dispersará entre todos los pueblos de un extremo de la tierra hasta el otro extremo de la tierra(BP); y allí servirás a otros dioses, de madera y de piedra, que ni tú ni tus padres han conocido(BQ). 65 Y entre esas naciones no hallarás descanso(BR), ni habrá reposo para la planta de tu pie, sino que allí el Señor te dará un corazón temeroso(BS), desfallecimiento de ojos y desesperación de alma. 66 Tendrás la vida pendiente de un hilo[aq]; y estarás aterrado de noche y de día, y no tendrás seguridad de tu vida. 67 Por la mañana dirás: “¡Oh, si fuera la tarde!”. Y por la tarde dirás: “¡Oh, si fuera la mañana(BT)!”, por causa del espanto de tu corazón con que temerás y por lo que verán tus ojos[ar]. 68 Y el Señor te hará volver a Egipto en naves, por el camino del cual yo te había dicho: “Nunca más volverás a verlo”. Y allí ustedes se ofrecerán en venta como esclavos y esclavas a sus enemigos, pero no habrá comprador».

Bendiciones para los que obedecen(A)

28 »Si de veras obedeces al Señor tu Dios, y pones en práctica todos sus mandamientos que yo te ordeno hoy, entonces el Señor te pondrá por encima de todos los pueblos de la tierra. 2 Además, todas estas bendiciones vendrán sobre ti y te alcanzarán por haber obedecido al Señor tu Dios. 3 Serás bendito en la ciudad y en el campo. 4 Serán benditos tus hijos y tus cosechas, y las crías de tus vacas, de tus ovejas y de todos tus animales. 5 Serán benditos tu cesta y el lugar donde amasas la harina, 6 y tú serás bendito en todo lo que hagas.

7 »El Señor pondrá en tus manos a tus enemigos cuando te ataquen. Avanzarán contra ti en formación ordenada, pero huirán de ti en completo desorden.

8 »El Señor enviará su bendición sobre tus graneros y sobre todo lo que hagas, y te hará vivir feliz en el país que va a darte.

9 »Si cumples sus mandamientos y sigues sus caminos, el Señor tu Dios te mantendrá como pueblo consagrado a él, tal como te lo ha jurado. 10 Entonces todos los pueblos de la tierra verán que sobre ti se invoca el nombre del Señor, y te tendrán miedo. 11 El Señor te mostrará su bondad dándote muchos hijos, muchas crías de tus ganados y abundantes cosechas en la tierra que a tus antepasados juró que te daría. 12 Y te abrirá su rico tesoro, que es el cielo, para darle a tu tierra la lluvia que necesite; y hará prosperar todo tu trabajo. Podrás prestar a muchas naciones, pero tú no tendrás que pedir prestado a nadie. 13 El Señor te pondrá en el primer lugar, y no en el último; siempre estarás por encima de los demás, y nunca por debajo, con tal de que atiendas a los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios, que yo te ordeno hoy, y los pongas en práctica, 14 sin apartarte de ellos por seguir a otros dioses y rendirles culto.

Consecuencias de la desobediencia(B)

15 »Pero si no obedeces al Señor tu Dios, ni pones en práctica todos sus mandamientos y leyes que yo te he ordenado hoy, vendrán sobre ti y te alcanzarán todas estas maldiciones: 16 Serás maldito en la ciudad y en el campo. 17 Serán malditos tu cesta y el lugar donde amasas la harina. 18 Serán malditos tus hijos y tus cosechas, y las crías de tus vacas, de tus ovejas y de todos tus animales. 19 Y maldito serás tú en todo lo que hagas.

20 »El Señor te enviará maldición, confusión y angustia en todo lo que hagas, y en muy poco tiempo te destruirán por completo, por haberlo abandonado con tus malas acciones. 21 El Señor te enviará una peste que acabará contigo en el país que vas a ocupar. 22 También te enviará epidemias mortales, fiebres malignas, inflamaciones, calor sofocante, sequía y plagas sobre tus trigales, epidemias que te perseguirán hasta destruirte. 23 Allá arriba, el cielo te negará su lluvia; y aquí abajo, la tierra te negará sus frutos. 24 El Señor hará caer sobre ti polvo y arena en vez de lluvia, hasta que seas destruido 25 y aplastado por tus enemigos. Avanzarás contra ellos en formación ordenada, pero huirás de ellos en completo desorden, y serás motivo de espanto para todos los reinos de la tierra. 26 Las aves y las fieras devorarán tu cadáver sin que nadie las espante.

27 »El Señor te hará sufrir con llagas, como a los egipcios, y con tumores, sarna y tiña, y no podrás curarte de estas enfermedades. 28 También te hará padecer locura, ceguera y confusión, 29 y andarás a tientas, como el ciego en la oscuridad. Nada de lo que hagas te saldrá bien; te verás siempre oprimido y explotado, y nadie vendrá en tu ayuda. 30 Te comprometerás para casarte, pero otro se acostará con tu prometida; te construirás una casa, pero no llegarás a habitarla; plantarás un viñedo, pero no disfrutarás de sus frutos; 31 degollarán a tu toro delante de ti, pero no comerás de su carne; te quitarán tu asno en tu propia cara, y no te lo devolverán; tus ovejas caerán en manos de tus enemigos, y no habrá quien te ayude a rescatarlas. 32 Ante tus propios ojos, tus hijos y tus hijas serán entregados a gente extranjera, y a todas horas querrás volver a verlos, pero nada podrás hacer. 33 Las cosechas de tu tierra y el fruto de todo tu trabajo se lo comerá gente que nunca antes conociste, y sufrirás continuamente opresión y malos tratos. 34 Cuando veas todas estas cosas, te volverás loco. 35 El Señor te hará sufrir con llagas malignas en las rodillas y en los muslos y en todo el cuerpo, sin que puedas ser curado.

36 »El Señor hará que a ti y a tu rey se los lleven a una nación que ni tú ni tus padres conocieron. Allí tendrás que servir a otros dioses, hechos de madera y de piedra, 37 y serás motivo de horror, de refrán y de burla en todos los pueblos donde te lleve el Señor. 38 Sembrarás mucha semilla, pero recogerás poco fruto porque la langosta lo devorará. 39 Plantarás viñedos y los cuidarás, pero no beberás su vino ni recogerás sus uvas porque los gusanos acabarán con todo. 40 Tendrás olivos en toda tu tierra, pero no te perfumarás con su aceite porque las aceitunas se caerán solas. 41 Tendrás hijos e hijas, pero no estarán contigo porque serán llevados cautivos a otros países. 42 Todos los árboles y los frutos de tu tierra serán destruidos por la langosta. 43 Los extranjeros que vivan en tu país se harán más y más poderosos, mientras que tú perderás más y más tu poder. 44 Ellos podrán hacerte préstamos, y tú, por el contrario, no tendrás nada que prestar; los primeros lugares serán para ellos, y para ti los últimos.

45 »Todas estas maldiciones vendrán sobre ti, y te perseguirán y te alcanzarán hasta acabar contigo, porque no quisiste obedecer al Señor tu Dios ni cumplir los mandamientos y leyes ordenados por él. 46 Estas cosas serán una prueba contundente contra ti y tu descendencia, para siempre, 47 por no haber adorado al Señor tu Dios con alegría y sinceridad cuando tantos bienes te había dado. 48 Tendrás que servir a los enemigos que el Señor enviará contra ti; sufrirás hambre, sed, falta de ropa y toda clase de miserias. El Señor te hará sufrir una dura esclavitud, hasta que seas destruido. 49 Desde el país más lejano del mundo, el Señor lanzará contra ti, con la rapidez de un águila en vuelo, una nación cuya lengua no entiendes; 50 gente de aspecto feroz, que no respetará a los ancianos ni tendrá compasión de los niños. 51 Se comerá las crías de tu ganado y los frutos de tu tierra, hasta arruinarte; no te dejará trigo, ni vino, ni aceite, ni las crías de tus vacas ni de tus ovejas, y morirás de hambre.

52 »Rodeará todas tus ciudades y las atacará, hasta que se derrumben las murallas más altas y fortificadas en que habías puesto tu confianza; sí, rodeará y atacará todas las ciudades del país que te ha dado el Señor tu Dios. 53 Durante el ataque enemigo a tus ciudades, será tanta tu hambre que te comerás a tus propios hijos, los hijos y las hijas que el Señor tu Dios te dio. 54 Aun el hombre más delicado y amable entre ustedes mirará con malos ojos a su hermano, a su esposa amada y a los hijos que todavía le queden, 55 para no compartir con ellos la carne de sus hijos que él se coma. Y no habrá nada que comer durante el ataque a las ciudades y la horrible angustia que tu enemigo te hará sufrir en todas tus ciudades. 56 Aun la mujer más delicada y fina entre ustedes, que de tan delicada que era no quería pisar descalza el suelo, mirará con malos ojos a su esposo amado y a sus hijos 57 para no compartir con ellos los hijos que dé a luz y la placenta que salga de sus entrañas; todo ello se lo comerá a escondidas, pues no habrá nada que comer durante el ataque del enemigo a tus ciudades.

58 »Si no pones en práctica todas las instrucciones escritas en este libro, ni respetas este glorioso e imponente nombre del Señor tu Dios, 59 él enviará grandes y terribles plagas sobre ti y sobre tus descendientes, y enfermedades malignas e incurables. 60 Hará que se repitan sobre ti todas las plagas de Egipto, que tanto espanto te causaron, y tendrás que sufrirlas constantemente. 61 Además, te enviará otras enfermedades y plagas que no se mencionan en este libro de la enseñanza, hasta acabar contigo. 62 Y tú, Israel, que eras tan numeroso como las estrellas del cielo, quedarás reducido a un pequeño número, por no haber obedecido al Señor tu Dios. 63 Y así como el Señor se complacía en hacerte bien y multiplicarte, ahora se complacerá en tu ruina y tu destrucción, pues serás arrancado violentamente del país que vas a ocupar. 64 El Señor te esparcirá por todas las naciones, de un extremo a otro de la tierra, y allí adorarás a dioses ajenos, dioses de madera y de piedra, que ni tú ni tus antepasados conocieron. 65 Y mientras vivas en esas naciones no tendrás tranquilidad ni reposo, porque el Señor te hará vivir asustado, con los ojos tristes y lleno de ansiedad. 66 Tu vida estará siempre en peligro; tendrás miedo de día y de noche, y nunca tendrás segura la vida. 67 Será tanto el miedo que tendrás, y tales las cosas que verás, que por la mañana dirás: “¡Ojalá que ya fuera de noche!”, y por la noche dirás: “¡Ojalá que ya fuera de día!” 68 Y aunque el Señor te dijo que no volverías otra vez por el camino de Egipto, sin embargo te hará volver allí en barcos, y te venderá como esclavo a tus enemigos; pero no habrá nadie que te quiera comprar.»

28 “And it will happen that if you indeed listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to diligently observe[a] all his commandments that I am commanding you today,[b] then Yahweh your God will set you above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all of these blessings shall come upon you, and they shall have an effect on you[c] if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God:

3 “You will be blessed in the city, and you will be blessed in the field.

4 “Blessed will be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your livestock, the calf of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.[d]

5 “Blessed will be your basket and your kneading trough.

6 “Blessed will you be when you come in and blessed will you be when you go out.[e]

7 “Yahweh will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you;[f] on one road[g] they shall come out against you, but on seven roads[h] they shall flee before you.[i] 8 Yahweh will command concerning you[j] the blessing to be in your barns and in all your endeavors;[k] and he will bless you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you. 9 Yahweh will establish you for himself[l] as a holy people as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of Yahweh your God and you walk in his ways. 10 And all of the peoples of the earth shall see that by the name of Yahweh you are called,[m] and they shall fear you.[n] 11 And Yahweh will make you successful and prosperous,[o] in the fruit of your womb and on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors[p] to give to you. 12 Yahweh shall open for you his rich[q] storehouse, even the heavens, to give the rain for[r] your land in its time and to bless all of the work of your hand, and you will lend to many nations; you will not borrow from them. 13 And Yahweh shall make you[s] as head and not the tail, and you shall be only at the top of the nations, and you shall not be at the bottom, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you today[t] and diligently observe them.[u] 14 And you shall not turn aside from any of[v] the words that I am commanding you today[w] to the right or left by going after other gods to serve them.

15 “And then[x] if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God by diligently observing[y] all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you today,[z] then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you:

16 “You shall[aa] be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field.

17 “Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough.

18 “The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.

19 “You shall be cursed when you come in,[ab] and you shall be cursed when you go out.[ac]

20 “Yahweh will send upon you[ad] the curse,[ae] the panic,[af] and the threat[ag] in everything that you undertake,[ah] until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly[ai] because of[aj] the evil of your deeds in that[ak] you have forsaken me. 21 Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you until it consumes you[al] from the land that you are going to,[am] to take possession of it. 22 Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword[an] and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you until you perish.[ao] 23 And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. 24 Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you until you are destroyed.[ap]

25 “Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated before[aq] your enemies; on one road you shall go against[ar] them,[as] but you will flee on seven roads before[at] them,[au] and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. 26 And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be anyone to frighten them away.[av]

27 “Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with the skin rash that cannot be healed.[aw] 28 Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. 29 And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed all the time,[ax] and there will not be anyone who will rescue you. [ay] 30 You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep[az] with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right before you,[ba] and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and there shall not be anyone who rescues you.[bb] 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on[bc] longingly[bd] for[be] them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything.[bf] 33 A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.[bg] 34 You shall become mad because of what your eyes shall see.[bh] 35 Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which you will not be able to be healed,[bi] from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. 36 Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors[bj] have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. 37 And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there.

38 “You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress[bk] them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.[bl] 40 There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives[bm] shall drop off. 41 You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours,[bn] for they shall go into captivity. 42 The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. 43 The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail.

45 “And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you until you are destroyed,[bo] because you did not listen[bp] to the voice of Yahweh your God, by observing[bq] his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. 46 And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring forever.[br]

47 “Because[bs] of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, 48 then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place[bt] a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you.[bu] 49 Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand,[bv] 50 a grim-faced nation[bw] who does not show respect[bx] to the old and the young and does not show pity. 51 And it[by] shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed,[bz] and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, calves of your herds,[ca] and lambs of[cb] your flock until it has destroyed you.[cc] 52 And it shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls fall,[cd] which you are trusting in[ce] throughout your land;[cf] and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. 53 And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, during the siege and during the distress[cg] your enemy inflicts upon you. 54 The most refined and the very sensitive[ch] man among you shall be mean with his brother[ci] and against his beloved wife[cj] and against the rest[ck] of his children that he has left over, 55 by refraining from giving[cl] to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him during the siege and distress[cm] that your enemy inflicts upon you. 56 The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall[cn] not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, shall be mean to her beloved husband[co] and against her son and against her daughter, 57 and even concerning her afterbirth that goes out[cp] from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret during the siege and during the distress[cq] that your enemy inflicts upon her in your towns.[cr]

58 “If you do not diligently observe[cs] all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, 59 then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. 60 And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which you were in dread[ct] because of them.[cu] 61 Also any illness and any plague[cv] that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. 62 And you shall remain only a few people[cw] in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. 63 And then[cx] as Yahweh delighted over you to make you prosperous[cy] to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you[cz] and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. 64 And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor[da] your ancestors,[db] gods of wood and stone. 65 And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes[dc] and a languishing of your inner self.[dd] 66 And your life shall hang in doubt before you,[de] and you shall be startled[df] night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. 67 In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it was evening!’[dg] and in the evening you shall say ‘If only it was morning!’[dh] because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. 68 And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I promised[di] to you that ‘You shall not see it again!’[dj] And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer.”

Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow(A) all his commands(B) I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.(C) 2 All these blessings will come on you(D) and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

3 You will be blessed(E) in the city and blessed in the country.(F)

4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(G)

5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.(H)

7 The Lord will grant that the enemies(I) who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.(J)

8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless(K) you in the land he is giving you.

Curses for Disobedience

15 However, if you do not obey(Y) the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today,(Z) all these curses will come on you and overtake you:(AA)

20 The Lord will send on you curses,(AF) confusion and rebuke(AG) in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin(AH) because of the evil(AI) you have done in forsaking him.[a] 21 The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess.(AJ) 22 The Lord will strike you with wasting disease,(AK) with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought,(AL) with blight(AM) and mildew, which will plague(AN) you until you perish.(AO) 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron.(AP) 24 The Lord will turn the rain(AQ) of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated(AR) before your enemies. 36 The Lord will drive you and the king(BJ) you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors.(BK) There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone.(BL) 37 You will become a thing of horror,(BM) a byword(BN) and an object of ridicule(BO) among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(BP)

38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little,(BQ) because locusts(BR) will devour(BS) it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine(BT) or gather the grapes, because worms will eat(BU) them.(BV) 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off.(BW) 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.(BX) 42 Swarms of locusts(BY) will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

43 The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.(BZ) 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.(CA) They will be the head, but you will be the tail.(CB)

45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you(CC) until you are destroyed,(CD) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.(CE) 47 Because you did not serve(CF) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly(CG) in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst,(CH) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke(CI) on your neck(CJ) until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you(CK) from far away, from the ends of the earth,(CL) like an eagle(CM) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,(CN) 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old(CO) or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine(CP) or olive oil,(CQ) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.(CR) 52 They will lay siege(CS) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.(CT)

53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.(CU) 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.(CV) 56 The most gentle and sensitive(CW) woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter(CX) 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them(CY) secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,(CZ) which are written in this book, and do not revere(DA) this glorious and awesome name(DB)—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt(DC) that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,(DD) until you are destroyed.(DE) 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky(DF) will be left but few(DG) in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as it pleased(DH) the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please(DI) him to ruin and destroy you.(DJ) You will be uprooted(DK) from the land you are entering to possess.

64 Then the Lord will scatter(DL) you among all nations,(DM) from one end of the earth to the other.(DN) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.(DO) 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place(DP) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes(DQ) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.(DR) 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.(DS) 68 The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.(DT) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.
