Casos de muerte sin explicación
21 »Si en el país que el Señor su Dios les va a dar en propiedad se encuentra en el campo el cadáver de una persona asesinada, sin que se sepa quién la mató, 2 los ancianos y los jueces calcularán la distancia que haya entre el lugar donde se encuentre el cadáver y las ciudades más cercanas. 3 Entonces los ancianos de la ciudad más cercana tomarán una ternera a la que todavía no se le haya puesto yugo, 4 la bajarán a un arroyo que siempre lleve agua y donde nunca se haya labrado ni sembrado, y allí mismo le romperán el pescuezo.
5 »Después se acercarán los sacerdotes levitas, pues el Señor los eligió para que tengan a su cargo los servicios del culto y bendigan en el nombre del Señor. En todo caso de pleito o disputa, su decisión será final. 6 Luego, todos los ancianos de la ciudad se lavarán las manos sobre la ternera muerta, 7 y harán la siguiente declaración: “Nosotros no matamos a ese hombre, ni vimos cómo lo mataron. 8 Perdona, Señor, a tu pueblo Israel, que tú has rescatado, y no lo culpes de la muerte de un inocente.” Así no se les pedirá cuentas de la muerte de esa persona, 9 y ustedes harán lo que es recto a los ojos del Señor y quitarán de entre ustedes la culpa de esa muerte.
Ley sobre prisioneras de guerra
10 »Cuando presenten batalla contra sus enemigos, y el Señor su Dios los haga caer prisioneros en manos de ustedes, 11 si alguno de ustedes ve entre ellos una mujer hermosa, y se enamora de ella y la toma por esposa, 12 deberá llevarla a su casa y hará que se rape la cabeza, se corte las uñas, 13 se quite el vestido que llevaba cuando cayó prisionera y se quede a vivir en casa de él, llorando a sus padres durante todo un mes. Después de eso podrá el israelita entrar en relaciones con ella; él será su marido, y ella su mujer. 14 Si después resulta que no le gusta, podrá dejarla en libertad; pero no podrá venderla por dinero ni tratarla como esclava, ya que la ha deshonrado.
Derechos del hijo mayor
15 »Si un hombre tiene dos mujeres, y ama a una y a la otra no, pero las dos le dan hijos y el hijo mayor es de la mujer a la que no ama, 16 cuando llegue el día en que ese hombre reparta sus bienes entre sus hijos, no podrá tratar como hijo mayor al de la mujer que ama, pues perjudicaría al hijo de la mujer aborrecida, que es realmente el mayor. 17 Tendrá que reconocer a éste como su hijo mayor y darle una doble parte de los bienes que le correspondan, porque él es el primer fruto de su fuerza y tiene todos los derechos de hijo mayor.
Castigo para los hijos rebeldes
18 »Si alguien tiene un hijo desobediente y rebelde, que no hace caso de lo que le dicen sus padres, y que ni siquiera cuando lo castigan los obedece, 19 sus padres deberán llevarlo ante el tribunal de los ancianos de la ciudad, 20 y decirles: “Nuestro hijo es desobediente y rebelde; no nos obedece en nada, es un pervertido y un borracho.” 21 Entonces todos los hombres de la ciudad lo matarán a pedradas. Así acabarán ustedes con la maldad que haya en medio de su pueblo y, al saberlo, los israelitas sentirán temor.
Leyes diversas
22 »Si un hombre es condenado a morir colgado de un árbol por haber cometido un grave delito, 23 su cuerpo no deberá dejarse allí toda la noche, sino que tendrá que ser enterrado el mismo día, porque es maldito de Dios el que muere colgado de un árbol, y ustedes no deben convertir en impura la tierra que el Señor su Dios les va a dar en propiedad.

Atonement for an Unsolved Murder
21 If someone is found slain, lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who the killer was,(A) 2 your elders and judges shall go out and measure the distance from the body to the neighboring towns. 3 Then the elders of the town nearest the body shall take a heifer that has never been worked and has never worn a yoke(B) 4 and lead it down to a valley that has not been plowed or planted and where there is a flowing stream. There in the valley they are to break the heifer’s neck. 5 The Levitical priests shall step forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister and to pronounce blessings(C) in the name of the Lord and to decide all cases of dispute and assault.(D) 6 Then all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands(E) over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, 7 and they shall declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done. 8 Accept this atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, Lord, and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent person.” Then the bloodshed will be atoned for,(F) 9 and you will have purged(G) from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
Marrying a Captive Woman
10 When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands(H) and you take captives,(I) 11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful(J) woman and are attracted to her,(K) you may take her as your wife. 12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head,(L) trim her nails 13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month,(M) then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.(N)
The Right of the Firstborn
15 If a man has two wives,(O) and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,(P) 16 when he wills his property to his sons, he must not give the rights of the firstborn to the son of the wife he loves in preference to his actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love.(Q) 17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double(R) share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength.(S) The right of the firstborn belongs to him.(T)
A Rebellious Son
18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious(U) son(V) who does not obey his father and mother(W) and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death.(X) You must purge the evil(Y) from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.(Z)
Various Laws
22 If someone guilty of a capital offense(AA) is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.(AB) Be sure to bury(AC) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.(AD) You must not desecrate(AE) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.
