L'ADORAZIONE DELLA STATUA D'ORO
Nabucodonosor erige una statua d'oro
3 Il re Nabucodònosor aveva fatto costruire una statua d'oro, alta sessanta cubiti e larga sei, e l'aveva fatta erigere nella pianura di Dura, nella provincia di Babilonia.
2 Quindi il re Nabucodònosor aveva convocato i sàtrapi, i prefetti, i governatori, i consiglieri, i tesorieri, i giudici, i questori e tutte le alte autorità delle province, perché presenziassero all'inaugurazione della statua che il re Nabucodònosor aveva fatto erigere.
3 I sàtrapi, i prefetti, i governatori, i consiglieri, i tesorieri, i giudici, i questori e tutte le alte autorità delle province vennero all'inaugurazione della statua. Essi si disposero davanti alla statua fatta erigere dal re.
4 Un banditore gridò ad alta voce: «Popoli, nazioni e lingue, a voi è rivolto questo proclama:
5 Quando voi udirete il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, dell'arpicordo, del salterio, della zampogna, e d'ogni specie di strumenti musicali, vi prostrerete e adorerete la statua d'oro, che il re Nabucodònosor ha fatto innalzare.
6 Chiunque non si prostrerà alla statua, in quel medesimo istante sarà gettato in mezzo ad una fornace di fuoco ardente».
7 Perciò tutti i popoli, nazioni e lingue, in quell'istante che ebbero udito il suono del corno, del flauto, dell'arpicordo, del salterio e di ogni specie di strumenti musicali, si prostrarono e adorarono la statua d'oro, che il re Nabucodònosor aveva fatto innalzare.
Denunzia e condanna dei Giudei
8 Però in quel momento alcuni Caldei si fecero avanti per accusare i Giudei 9 e andarono a dire al re Nabucodònosor: «Re, vivi per sempre! 10 Tu hai decretato, o re, che chiunque avrà udito il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, dell'arpicordo, del salterio, della zampogna e d'ogni specie di strumenti musicali, si deve prostrare e adorare la statua d'oro: 11 chiunque non si prostrerà per adorarla, sia gettato in mezzo ad una fornace con il fuoco acceso.
12 Ora, ci sono alcuni Giudei, ai quali hai affidato gli affari della provincia di Babilonia, cioè Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, che non ti obbediscono, re: non servono i tuoi dei e non adorano la statua d'oro che tu hai fatto innalzare».
13 Allora Nabucodònosor, sdegnato, comandò che gli si conducessero Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, e questi comparvero alla presenza del re. 14 Nabucodònosor disse loro: «E' vero, Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, che voi non servite i miei dei e non adorate la statua d'oro che io ho fatto innalzare? 15 Ora, se voi sarete pronti, quando udirete il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, dell'arpicordo, del salterio, della zampogna e d'ogni specie di strumenti musicali, a prostrarvi e adorare la statua che io ho fatta, bene; altrimenti in quel medesimo istante sarete gettati in mezzo ad una fornace dal fuoco ardente. Qual Dio vi potrà liberare dalla mia mano?».
16 Ma Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego risposero al re Nabucodònosor: «Re, noi non abbiamo bisogno di darti alcuna risposta in proposito; 17 sappi però che il nostro Dio, che serviamo, può liberarci dalla fornace con il fuoco acceso e dalla tua mano, o re. 18 Ma anche se non ci liberasse, sappi, o re, che noi non serviremo mai i tuoi dei e non adoreremo la statua d'oro che tu hai eretto». 19 Allora Nabucodònosor, acceso d'ira e con aspetto minaccioso contro Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, ordinò che si aumentasse il fuoco della fornace sette volte più del solito. 20 Poi, ad alcuni uomini fra i più forti del suo esercito, comandò di legare Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego e gettarli nella fornace con il fuoco acceso. 21 Furono infatti legati, vestiti come erano, con i mantelli, calzari, turbanti e tutti i loro abiti e gettati in mezzo alla fornace con il fuoco acceso.
22 Ma quegli uomini, che dietro il severo comando del re avevano acceso al massimo la fornace per gettarvi Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, rimasero uccisi dalle fiamme, 23 nel momento stesso che i tre giovani Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego cadevano legati nella fornace con il fuoco acceso.
Cantico di Azaria nella fornace
24 Essi passeggiavano in mezzo alle fiamme, lodavano Dio e benedicevano il Signore.
25 Azaria, alzatosi, fece questa preghiera in mezzo al fuoco e aprendo la bocca disse:
26 «Benedetto sei tu, Signore Dio dei nostri padri;
degno di lode e glorioso è il tuo nome per sempre.
27 Tu sei giusto in tutto ciò che hai fatto;
tutte le tue opere sono vere,
rette le tue vie e giusti tutti i tuoi giudizi.
28 Giusto è stato il tuo giudizio
per quanto hai fatto ricadere su di noi
e sulla città santa dei nostri padri, Gerusalemme.
Con verità e giustizia tu ci hai inflitto tutto
questo
a causa dei nostri peccati,
29 poiché noi abbiamo peccato, abbiamo agito da
iniqui,
allontanandoci da te, abbiamo mancato in ogni modo.
Non abbiamo obbedito ai tuoi comandamenti,
30 non li abbiamo osservati, non abbiamo fatto
quanto ci avevi ordinato per il nostro bene.
31 Ora quanto hai fatto ricadere su di noi,
tutto ciò che ci hai fatto, l'hai fatto con retto
giudizio:
32 ci hai dato in potere dei nostri nemici,
ingiusti, i peggiori fra gli empi,
e di un re iniquo, il più malvagio su tutta la terra.
33 Ora non osiamo aprire la bocca:
disonore e disprezzo sono toccati ai tuoi servi,
ai tuoi adoratori.
34 Non ci abbandonare fino in fondo,
per amore del tuo nome, non rompere la tua alleanza;
35 non ritirare da noi la tua misericordia,
per amore di Abramo tuo amico,
di Isacco tuo servo, d'Israele tuo santo,
36 ai quali hai parlato, promettendo di moltiplicare
la loro stirpe come le stelle del cielo,
come la sabbia sulla spiaggia del mare.
37 Ora invece, Signore,
noi siamo diventati più piccoli
di qualunque altra nazione,
ora siamo umiliati per tutta la terra
a causa dei nostri peccati.
38 Ora non abbiamo più né principe,
né capo, né profeta, né olocausto,
né sacrificio, né oblazione, né incenso,
né luogo per presentarti le primizie
e trovar misericordia.
39 Potessimo esser accolti con il cuore contrito
e con lo spirito umiliato,
come olocausti di montoni e di tori,
come migliaia di grassi agnelli.
40 Tale sia oggi il nostro sacrificio davanti a te
e ti sia gradito,
perché non c'è confusione per coloro che confidano
in te.
41 Ora ti seguiamo con tutto il cuore,
ti temiamo e cerchiamo il tuo volto.
42 Fà con noi secondo la tua clemenza,
trattaci secondo la tua benevolenza,
secondo la grandezza della tua misericordia.
43 Salvaci con i tuoi prodigi,
dà gloria, Signore, al tuo nome.
44 Siano invece confusi quanti fanno il male ai tuoi
servi,
siano coperti di vergogna con tutta la loro potenza;
e sia infranta la loro forza!
45 Sappiano che tu sei il Signore,
il Dio unico e glorioso su tutta la terra».
46 I servi del re, che li avevano gettati dentro, non cessarono di aumentare il fuoco nella fornace, con bitume, stoppa, pece e sarmenti. 47 La fiamma si alzava quarantanove cubiti sopra la fornace 48 e uscendo bruciò quei Caldei che si trovavano vicino alla fornace. 49 Ma l'angelo del Signore, che era sceso con Azaria e con i suoi compagni nella fornace, allontanò da loro la fiamma del fuoco 50 e rese l'interno della fornace come un luogo dove soffiasse un vento pieno di rugiada. Così il fuoco non li toccò affatto, non fece loro alcun male, non diede loro alcuna molestia.
Cantico dei tre giovani
51 Allora quei tre giovani, a una sola voce, si misero a lodare, a glorificare, a benedire Dio nella fornace dicendo:
52 «Benedetto sei tu, Signore, Dio dei padri nostri,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
Benedetto il tuo nome glorioso e santo,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
53 Benedetto sei tu nel tuo tempio santo glorioso,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
54 Benedetto sei tu nel trono del tuo regno,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
55 Benedetto sei tu che penetri con lo sguardo gli
abissi
e siedi sui cherubini,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
56 Benedetto sei tu nel firmamento del cielo,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
57 Benedite, opere tutte del Signore, il Signore,
lodatelo ed esaltatelo nei secoli.
58 Benedite, angeli del Signore, il Signore,

83 Benedica Israele il Signore,
lo lodi e lo esalti nei secoli.
84 Benedite, sacerdoti del Signore, il Signore,

85 Benedite, o servi del Signore, il Signore,
lodatelo ed esaltatelo nei secoli.
86 Benedite, spiriti e anime dei giusti, il Signore,
lodatelo ed esaltatelo nei secoli.
87 Benedite, pii e umili di cuore, il Signore,
lodatelo ed esaltatelo nei secoli.
88 Benedite, Anania, Azaria e Misaele, il Signore,
lodatelo ed esaltatelo nei secoli,
perché ci ha liberati dagl'inferi,
e salvati dalla mano della morte,
ci ha scampati di mezzo alla fiamma ardente,
ci ha liberati dal fuoco.
89 Lodate il Signore, perché egli è buono,
perché la sua grazia dura sempre.
90 Benedite, fedeli tutti, il Dio degli dei,
lodatelo e celebratelo, perché la sua grazia dura
sempre».
Riconoscimento del miracolo
91 Allora il re Nabucodònosor rimase stupito e alzatosi in fretta si rivolse ai suoi ministri: «Non abbiamo noi gettato tre uomini legati in mezzo al fuoco?». «Certo, o re», risposero.
92 Egli soggiunse: «Ecco, io vedo quattro uomini sciolti, i quali camminano in mezzo al fuoco, senza subirne alcun danno; anzi il quarto è simile nell'aspetto a un figlio di dei».
93 Allora Nabucodònosor si accostò alla bocca della fornace con il fuoco acceso e prese a dire: «Sadràch, Mesàch, Abdènego, servi del Dio altissimo, uscite, venite fuori». Allora Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego uscirono dal fuoco.
94 Quindi i satrapi, i prefetti, i governatori e i ministri del re si radunarono e, guardando quegli uomini, videro che sopra i loro corpi il fuoco non aveva avuto nessun potere; che neppure un capello del loro capo era stato bruciato e i loro mantelli non erano stati toccati e neppure l'odore del fuoco era penetrato in essi.
95 Nabucodònosor prese a dire: «Benedetto il Dio di Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, il quale ha mandato il suo angelo e ha liberato i servi che hanno confidato in lui; hanno trasgredito il comando del re e hanno esposto i loro corpi per non servire e per non adorare alcun altro dio che il loro Dio.
96 Perciò io decreto che chiunque, a qualsiasi popolo, nazione o lingua appartenga, proferirà offesa contro il Dio di Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego, sia tagliato a pezzi e la sua casa sia ridotta a un mucchio di rovine, poiché nessun altro dio può in tal maniera liberare».
97 Da allora il re promosse Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego a cariche pubbliche nella provincia di Babilonia.
IL SOGNO PREMONITORE E LA FOLLIA DI NABUCODONOSOR
98 Il re Nabucodònosor a tutti i popoli, nazioni e lingue, che abitano in tutta la terra: Pace e prosperità!
99 M'è parso opportuno rendervi noti i prodigi e le meraviglie che il Dio altissimo ha fatto per me.
100 Quanto sono grandi i suoi prodigi
e quanto straordinarie le sue meraviglie!
Il suo regno è un regno eterno
e il suo dominio di generazione in generazione.

3 Царь Навуходоносор сделал из золота статую шестидесяти локтей[a] в вышину и шести локтей[b] в ширину и поставил ее на равнине Дура, что в провинции Вавилон. 2 Затем он послал собрать сатрапов[c], военачальников, наместников, советников, казначеев, судей, городских старейшин и всех прочих сановников из провинций, чтобы они прибыли на освящение поставленного им истукана. 3 И сатрапы, военачальники, наместники, советники, казначеи, судьи, городские старейшины и все прочие сановники из провинций собрались на освящение статуи, поставленной царем Навуходоносором, и встали перед ней.
4 И глашатай громко воскликнул:
– Вот что приказано вам исполнить, о народы, племена и люди всякого языка: 5 как только вы услышите звуки рога, флейты, цитры, лиры, арфы, свирели и всяких других музыкальных инструментов, падите ниц и поклонитесь золотой статуе, которую поставил царь Навуходоносор! 6 Всякий, кто не падет ниц и не поклонится, тотчас же будет брошен в огненную печь!
7 И едва лишь услышав звуки рога, свирели, цитры, лиры, арфы и других музыкальных инструментов, все народы, племена и люди всякого языка пали ниц и поклонились золотой статуе, поставленной царем Навуходоносором.
8 В это время некоторые из мудрецов-халдеев пришли и донесли на иудеев. 9 Они сказали царю Навуходоносору:

– О Навуходоносор, нам нет нужды защищаться перед тобой в этом деле. 17 Если нас бросят в огненную печь, то Бог, Которому мы служим, может спасти нас из нее и избавить нас от твоей руки, о царь. 18 Но даже если нет, мы хотим, чтобы ты знал, о царь: мы не будем служить твоим богам и поклоняться золотой статуе, которую ты поставил.
19 Тогда Навуходоносор разозлился на Шадраха, Мешаха и Аведнего, и его лицо исказилось от злости. Он приказал раскалить печь в семь раз жарче, чем обычно, 20 и велел сильнейшим воинам своего войска связать Шадраха, Мешаха и Аведнего и бросить их в огненную печь. 21 Тогда этих мужчин, в их накидках, шароварах и головных повязках – во всей их одежде, связали и бросили в огненную печь. 22 По строгому приказу царя печь была так раскалена, что языки пламени убили воинов, поднявших Шадраха, Мешаха и Аведнего, 23 а те трое – Шадрах, Мешах и Аведнего – упали, крепко связанные, в огненную печь.
24 Тогда царь Навуходоносор в изумлении вскочил и спросил советников:
– Не троих ли мы связали и бросили в печь?
Они ответили:
– Истинно так, о царь.
25 Он сказал:
– Но я вижу, как в огне ходят четверо, несвязанные и невредимые, и четвертый похож на сына богов!
26 Навуходоносор подошел к отверстию огненной печи и закричал:
– Шадрах, Мешах и Аведнего, слуги Всевышнего Бога, выходите! Идите сюда!
Шадрах, Мешах и Аведнего вышли из огня, 27 а сатрапы, военачальники, наместники и царские советники столпились вокруг них. Они увидели, что огонь не повредил их тела и не опалил ни одного волоса у них на головах; их одежды не обгорели, от них даже не пахло горелым. 28 И Навуходоносор сказал:
– Хвала Богу Шадраха, Мешаха и Аведнего, Который послал Своего ангела и спас Своих слуг! Они верили Ему и нарушили царское повеление, и были готовы скорее проститься с жизнью, чем служить и поклоняться другому богу, кроме своего Бога. 29 Поэтому я повелеваю, чтобы людей всякого народа, племени и языка, которые оскорбят Бога Шадраха, Мешаха и Аведнего, разрубили на куски, а дома их превратили в груды развалин, потому что нет другого бога, который мог бы так спасать.
30 И царь дал Шадраху, Мешаху и Аведнего высокие должности в провинции Вавилон.
Сон Навуходоносора о дереве
31 Царь Навуходоносор всем народам, племенам и людям всякого языка, живущим по всей земле:
Да умножится ваше благополучие!
32 Мне угодно рассказать вам о знамениях и чудесах, которые сотворил для меня Всевышний Бог.
33 Какое величие в Его знамениях,
какая сила в Его чудесах!
Царство Его – вечное царство;

The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace
3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(A) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps,(B) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(C) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.
4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(D) this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(E) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(F) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(G) 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(H)
7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(I)
8 At this time some astrologers[b](J) came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(K) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(L) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(M) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(N)—who pay no attention(O) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(P)
13 Furious(Q) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(R) or worship the image(S) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(T) will be able to rescue(U) you from my hand?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(V) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(W) us from it, and he will deliver(X) us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(Y)”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(Z) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(AA) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(AB) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”
They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”
25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(AC) come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(AD) crowded around them.(AE) They saw that the fire(AF) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(AG) and rescued(AH) his servants! They trusted(AI) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(AJ) 29 Therefore I decree(AK) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(AL) for no other god can save(AM) in this way.”
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AN)
