3 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits[a] and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the local governors, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3 Then the local governors, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces were gathered together to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
4 Then the herald cried aloud, “To you it is commanded, peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up. 6 Whoever doesn’t fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace the same hour.”
7 Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages fell down and worshiped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near and brought accusation against the Jews. 9 They answered Nebuchadnezzar the king, “O king, live for ever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree that every man who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music shall fall down and worship the golden image; 11 and whoever doesn’t fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, have not respected you. They don’t serve your gods, and don’t worship the golden image which you have set up.”
13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in rage and fury commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. Then these men were brought before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you don’t serve my gods and you don’t worship the golden image which I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music to fall down and worship the image which I have made, good; but if you don’t worship, you shall be cast the same hour into the middle of a burning fiery furnace. Who is that god who will deliver you out of my hands?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the form of his appearance was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He spoke, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 He commanded certain mighty men who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their pants, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other clothes, and were cast into the middle of the burning fiery furnace. 22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23 These three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the middle of the burning fiery furnace.
24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished and rose up in haste. He spoke and said to his counselors, “Didn’t we cast three men bound into the middle of the fire?”
They answered the king, “True, O king.”
25 He answered, “Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.[b]”
26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace. He spoke and said, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, you servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!”
Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the middle of the fire. 27 The local governors, the deputies, and the governors, and the king’s counselors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power on their bodies. The hair of their head wasn’t singed. Their pants weren’t changed. The smell of fire wasn’t even on them.
28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants who trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I make a decree that every people, nation, and language which speak anything evil against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill, because there is no other god who is able to deliver like this.”
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

Het gouden beeld en de brandende oven
3 Koning Nebukadnezar liet een gouden beeld maken van 27 meter hoog en 2,70 meter breed. Hij plaatste het in de vlakte Dura, in het gebied Babel. 2 Daarna bracht de koning alle hooggeplaatsten in overheidsdienst bijeen om de inwijding van Nebukadnezars beeld bij te wonen. 3 Nadat zij allemaal waren gearriveerd en hun plaats voor het monument hadden ingenomen, 4 riep een heraut met krachtige stem: ‘Volken uit alle landen en van allerlei talen, dit is het bevel van de koning: 5 straks zult u de muziek horen van hoorn, fluit, citer, luit, harp, doedelzak en van allerlei andere instrumenten. En zodra die muziek begint te spelen, moet u zich languit op de grond werpen en koning Nebukadnezars gouden beeld aanbidden. 6 Ieder die niet neervalt om te aanbidden, zal ogenblikkelijk in de brandende oven worden gegooid.’ 7 Bij het horen van de eerste tonen wierp dus iedereen, ongeacht zijn volk, taal of godsdienst, zich op de grond en aanbad het beeld.
8 Maar enige hoge functionarissen gingen naar de koning en dienden een aanklacht in tegen enkele Judeeërs die weigerden het beeld te aanbidden! 9 ‘Majesteit,’ zeiden zij, 10 ‘u hebt bevel gegeven dat iedereen zich op de grond moet laten vallen en het gouden beeld aanbidden, zodra de muziek begint te spelen. 11 Wie dat niet doet, zal in de brandende oven worden gegooid. 12 Maar nu zijn daar een paar Judese mannen, Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego, die u hebt belast met het bestuur over het gewest Babel. Deze mannen storen zich niet aan uw bevel en weigeren uw goden te vereren of het gouden beeld dat u hebt opgericht, te aanbidden.’ 13 Laaiend van woede beval Nebukadnezar Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego te halen. Toen zij waren voorgeleid, zei hij: 14 ‘Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego, is het waar dat u mijn goden niet wilt vereren en het gouden beeld niet wilt aanbidden? 15 Ik geef u nog één kans. Maar dan moet u zich bij het horen van de eerste tonen wel op de grond laten vallen en het beeld aanbidden. Doet u dat niet, dan zult u ogenblikkelijk in de brandende oven worden gegooid. En welke god zou u dan uit mijn handen kunnen redden?’ 16 De drie mannen antwoordden: ‘Wij vinden het niet nodig uw vraag te beantwoorden. 17 Onze God, die wij vereren, is in staat ons te redden uit de brandende oven en uit uw macht, majesteit. 18 Maar ook als Hij dat niet doet, kunt u er zeker van zijn dat wij uw goden niet zullen vereren en uw gouden beeld niet zullen aanbidden!’
19 Nebukadnezar werd razend op Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego. Zijn gezicht vertrok van woede. Hij beval dat de oven zevenmaal heter dan gewoonlijk moest worden opgestookt. 20 Hij droeg een paar van de sterkste mannen uit zijn leger op Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego vast te binden en in de brandende oven te gooien. 21 Zij werden stevig geboeid en met kleren en al in de oven gesmeten. 22 Omdat de koning in zijn woede zoʼn abnormaal heet vuur in de oven wilde hebben, schoten de vlammen eruit en doodden de soldaten die hen erin gooiden! 23 Zo vielen de drie vastgebonden Judese mannen in de hoog oplaaiende vlammen. 24 Plotseling sprong koning Nebukadnezar geschrokken overeind. ‘Wat zie ik nu?’ riep hij tegen zijn raadsmannen. ‘Wij hadden toch dríe mannen in de oven gegooid?’ ‘Jazeker, majesteit,’ antwoordden zij, 25 ‘Maar kijk!’ schreeuwde Nebukadnezar. ‘Nu zie ik er víer vrij rondlopen tussen de vlammen en zij zijn ongedeerd! En de vierde ziet eruit als een engel.’ 26 Nebukadnezar liep zo dicht mogelijk naar de open deur van de brandende oven en riep: ‘Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego, dienaren van de hoogste God, kom naar buiten! Kom hier!’ Het drietal stapte uit het vuur. 27 De stadhouders, gouverneurs, landvoogden en raadsheren verdrongen zich om hen heen en zagen dat zij geen letsel van het vuur hadden opgelopen. Hun hoofdhaar was niet verschroeid, hun mantels waren ongeschonden en er hing zelfs geen brandlucht om hen heen.
28 ‘Geloofd zij de God van Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego!’ zei Nebukadnezar. ‘Hij heeft zijn engel gestuurd om zijn dienaren die op Hem vertrouwden, te bevrijden. Hij liet hen niet in de steek toen zij mijn bevel trotseerden en liever hun leven waagden dan een andere god dan hun eigen God te vereren of te aanbidden. 29 Daarom vaardig ik het bevel uit dat iedereen, van welk volk, taal of natie dan ook, die iets oneerbiedigs zegt over de God van Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego in stukken wordt gehouwen. En zijn huis zal met de grond worden gelijkgemaakt. Want geen andere god kan met zoveel machtsvertoon redden als deze God heeft gedaan.’ 30 Sadrach, Mesach en Abednego stonden vanaf dat moment in hoog aanzien bij de koning.
