17 CHÚA bảo Mô-se, 2 “Hãy bảo dân Ít-ra-en mang mười hai cây gậy mỗi trưởng chi tộc mang một cây. Khắc tên của từng người trên mỗi cây gậy, 3 còn trên cây gậy của Lê-vi, khắc tên A-rôn. Mỗi trưởng chi tộc phải mang đến một cây gậy. 4 Để các cây gậy đó trong Lều Họp trước Rương Giao Ước, nơi ta gặp con. 5 Cây gậy của ai trổ lá tức là người đó được ta chọn. Như thế ta sẽ làm dân Ít-ra-en im miệng, để không còn phàn nàn mãi về các con.”
6 Vậy Mô-se nói với dân Ít-ra-en. Mỗi người trong mười hai trưởng tộc trao cho ông một cây gậy mỗi chi tộc một cái gậy. A-rôn cũng có một cây trong đống gậy đó. 7 Mô-se để các cây gậy trước mặt CHÚA trong Lều Giao Ước.
8 Sáng hôm sau khi Mô-se bước vào Lều thì ông thấy cây gậy của A-rôn, đại diện cho gia đình Lê-vi đã trổ lá. Cây gậy đó cũng ra nụ, hoa nở và ra trái hạnh nhân. 9 Vậy Mô-se lấy các cây gậy trước mặt CHÚA mang ra cho dân Ít-ra-en xem. Họ nhìn và ai nấy lấy cây gậy mình lại.
10 Rồi CHÚA phán cùng Mô-se,
“Hãy đặt cây gậy của A-rôn lại trước Rương Giao Ước. Nó sẽ dùng để nhắc nhở rằng dân nầy là dân luôn luôn phản nghịch ta, rồi chúng không còn kêu ca nữa để khỏi bị chết.” 11 Vậy Mô-se vâng lời CHÚA truyền dặn mình.
12 Dân Ít-ra-en bảo Mô-se, “Chúng tôi sẽ chết! Chúng tôi sẽ bị tiêu diệt, bị tiêu diệt hết! 13 Ai đến gần Lều Thánh của CHÚA sẽ chết. Vậy liệu chúng tôi có chết hết không?”

17 Chúa phán với Môi-se rằng, 2 “Hãy nói với dân I-sơ-ra-ên và bảo họ mang đến mười hai cây gậy; mỗi chi tộc một cây gậy, tức mỗi tộc trưởng của mỗi chi tộc sẽ mang đến một cây gậy. Hãy viết tên của mỗi người vào cây gậy của mình, 3 và cũng hãy viết tên của A-rôn vào cây gậy của chi tộc Lê-vi, vì mỗi chi tộc sẽ có một cây gậy. 4 Sau đó hãy đem các gậy ấy vào trong Lều Hội Kiến, và để ở phía trước Rương Giao Ước,[a] nơi Ta gặp ngươi. 5 Cây gậy của người nào Ta chọn sẽ đâm chồi; như thế Ta sẽ làm im tiếng lằm bằm của dân I-sơ-ra-ên, đặc biệt là tiếng của những kẻ cứ lằm bằm chống lại ngươi.”

8 Ngày hôm sau, Môi-se trở vào trong Lều Chứng Ước, và kìa, cây gậy của A-rôn thuộc chi tộc Lê-vi đã đâm chồi, trổ hoa, và có những trái hạnh nhân. 9 Môi-se mang tất cả những cây gậy ở trước mặt Chúa đến cho dân I-sơ-ra-ên; họ quan sát, rồi ai nấy lấy gậy của mình lại.
10 Chúa phán với Môi-se rằng, “Hãy đem cây gậy của A-rôn đặt lại phía trước Rương Giao Ước,[b] để làm dấu cảnh cáo những kẻ có ý phản loạn, hầu ngươi làm im những lời lằm bằm chống lại Ta, kẻo chúng phải chết.” 11 Môi-se làm y như vậy. Chúa truyền cho ông thế nào, ông làm y thế đó.
12 Dân I-sơ-ra-ên lại nói với Môi-se, “Nầy, chúng tôi chắc chết! Chúng tôi bị diệt mất! Tất cả chúng tôi bị diệt mất! 13 Tất cả những ai đến gần Lều của Chúa đều sẽ chết. Chẳng lẽ tất cả chúng tôi đều sẽ bị phạt chết hết sao?”

The Budding of Aaron’s Staff
17 [a] The Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Speak to the Israelites, and receive from them a staff from each tribe,[b] one from every tribal leader,[c] twelve staffs; you must write each man’s name on his staff. 3 You must write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi; for one staff is for the head of every tribe.[d] 4 You must place them[e] in the tent of meeting before the ark of the covenant[f] where I meet with you. 5 And the staff of the man whom I choose will blossom; so I will rid myself of the complaints of the Israelites, which they murmur against you.”
6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each leader,[g] according to their tribes[h]—twelve staffs; the staff of Aaron was among their staffs. 7 Then Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the testimony.[i]
8 On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony—and[j] the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted, and brought forth buds, and produced blossoms, and yielded almonds![k] 9 So Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the Israelites. They looked at them,[l] and each man took his staff.
The Memorial
10 The Lord said to Moses, “Bring Aaron’s staff back before the testimony to be preserved for a sign to the rebels, so that you may bring their murmurings to an end[m] before me, that they will not die.”[n] 11 So Moses did as the Lord commanded him—this is what he did.
12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We are bound to die![o] We perish, we all perish! 13 (17:28)[p] Anyone who even comes close to the tabernacle of the Lord will die! Are we all to die?”[q]

- Numbers 17:8 tn Here too the deictic particle (“and behold”) is added to draw attention to the sight in a vivid way.
- Numbers 17:8 sn There is no clear answer why the tribe of Levi had used an almond staff. The almond tree is one of the first to bud in the spring, and its white blossoms are a beautiful sign that winter is over. Its name became a name for “watcher”; Jeremiah plays on this name for God’s watching over his people (1:11-12).
- Numbers 17:9 tn The words “at them” are not in the Hebrew text, but they have been added in the translation for clarity.
- Numbers 17:10 tn The verb means “to finish; to complete” and here “to bring to an end.” It is the imperfect following the imperative, and so introduces a purpose clause (as a final imperfect).
- Numbers 17:10 tn This is another final imperfect in a purpose clause.
- Numbers 17:12 tn The use of הֵן (hen) and the perfect tense in the nuance of a prophetic perfect expresses their conviction that they were bound to die—it was certain (see GKC 312-13 §106.n).
- Numbers 17:13 sn Num 17:13 in the English Bible is 17:28 in the Hebrew text (BHS). See also the note on 16:36.
- Numbers 17:13 tn The verse stresses the completeness of their death: “will we be consumed by dying” (הַאִם תַּמְנוּ לִגְוֹעַ, haʾim tamnu ligvoaʿ).

17 [a]The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs(A) from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes.(B) Write the name of each man on his staff. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name,(C) for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. 4 Place them in the tent of meeting(D) in front of the ark of the covenant law,(E) where I meet with you.(F) 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose(G) will sprout,(H) and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling(I) against you by the Israelites.”
6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law.(J)
8 The next day Moses entered the tent(K) and saw that Aaron’s staff,(L) which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.(M) 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs(N) from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.
10 The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff(O) in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious.(P) This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” 11 Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.
12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!(Q) 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die.(R) Are we all going to die?”
