9 És elméne Abimélek, a Jerubbaál fia Sikembe, az õ anyjának atyjafiaihoz, és beszélt velök, valamint az õ anyja atyjának egész nemzetségével, mondván:
2 Mondjátok meg, kérlek, Sikem minden férfiának hallatára, melyik jobb néktek, hogy hetven férfiú uralkodjék-é rajtatok, Jerubbaálnak minden fia, [vagy] pedig [csak] egy ember uralkodjék felettetek? És emlékezzetek meg [arról], hogy én a ti csontotok és a ti testetek vagyok.
3 És elmondották anyjának testvérei róla mind e beszédeket Sikem minden férfiainak füle hallatára, és Abimélek felé hajlott az õ szívök, mert azt mondák: Atyánkfia õ!
4 És adának néki hetven ezüst [pénzt] a Baál-Beritnek házából, és ezzel [holmi] henyélõ és hiábavaló embereket fogadott magának Abimélek, a kik õt követék.
5 És elméne atyjának házához Ofrába, és megölé testvéreit, Jerubbaál fiait, a hetven férfiút egy kövön, és csak Jóthám maradt meg, Jerubbaálnak legkisebb fia, mert ez elrejtõzött.
6 És összegyülekezék Sikemnek egész polgársága, és Millónak egész háza, és elmenének és királylyá választák Abiméleket az alatt a magas tölgy alatt, a mely Sikemben [áll.]
7 Mikor pedig [ezt] elbeszélték vala Jóthámnak, elment és megállott a Garizim hegy tetején, és nagy felszóval kiálta, [és így] szóla hozzájuk: Hallgassatok rám, Sikem férfiai, hogy reátok is hallgasson az Isten!
8 [Egyszer] elmenvén elmentek a fák, hogy királyt válaszszanak magoknak, és mondának az olajfának: Uralkodjál felettünk!
9 De az olajfa [így] felelt nékik: Elhagyjam az én kövérségemet, a melylyel tisztelnek Istent és embereket, és elmenjek, hogy ingadozzam a fák felett?
10 Akkor a fügefának szólottak a fák: Jer el te, [és] uralkodjál rajtunk!
11 De a fügefa [is] azt mondta nékik: Elhagyjam-é édességemet és jó gyümölcseimet, és elmenjek, hogy ingadozzam a fák felett?
12 Azután a szõlõtõnek mondák a fák: Jer el te, uralkodjál rajtunk.
13 Azonban a szõlõtõ [is] azt mondta nékik: Elhagyjam-é mustomat, a mely isteneket és embereket vidámít, és elmenjek, hogy ingadozzam a fák felett?
14 Mondának végre a fák mindnyájan a galagonyabokornak: Jer el te, uralkodjál mi rajtunk.
15 És monda a galagonyabokor a fáknak: Ha igazán királylyá kentek engem magatok felett, jõjjetek el, nyugodjatok az én árnyékomban: [de] hogyha nem, jõjjön tûz ki a galagonyabokorból, és égesse meg a Libanonnak czédrusait.
16 Hát ti is most igazán és becsületesen cselekedtetek-é, hogy Abiméleket tettétek királylyá, és jól cselekedtetek-é Jerubbaállal és házanépével, és úgy bántatok-é vele, a mint megérdemelte?
17 Mert érettetek harczolt atyám, és még életével [is] semmit nem gondolván, mentett meg titeket a Midiánnak kezébõl.
18 Ti pedig most felkeltetek az én atyámnak háza ellen, és megöltétek gyermekeit, hetven férfiút egy kövön, és királylyá választottátok Sikem férfiai felett Abiméleket, az õ szolgálójának fiát, mert atyátokfia!
19 Ha igazán és becsületesen cselekedtetek Jerubbaállal és az õ házával a mai napon, örüljetek Abiméleknek, és örüljön õ is néktek;
20 De hogyha nem, jõjjön tûz ki Abimélekbõl, és emészsze meg Sikem férfiait és Milló házát, és származzék tûz Sikem férfiaiból és Milló házából, és emészsze meg Abiméleket!
21 És elfutott Jóthám, és elmenekült, és elment Beérbe az õ atyjafia, Abimélek elõl, és ott telepedett meg.
22 Mikor pedig uralkodék Abimélek Izráel felett három esztendeig:
23 Egy gonosz lelket bocsátott Isten Abimélek és Sikem férfiai közé, és pártot ütöttek Sikem férfiai Abimélek ellen,
24 Hogy eljõjjön a Jerubbaál hetven fián elkövetett kegyetlenség [büntetése,] és szálljon az õ vérök Abimélekre, testvérökre, a ki megölte õket, és Sikem férfiaira, a kik az õ kezeit megerõsítették, hogy megölje az õ atyjafiait.
25 És lest vetének néki a Sikem férfiai a hegyeknek tetején, és kiraboltak mindenkit, a ki elment mellettök az úton, mely dolgot megmondák Abiméleknek.
26 És eljött Gaál, Ebed fia és az õ atyjafiai, és bementek Sikembe, és bízának õ hozzá Sikem férfiai.
27 Annyira, hogy kimenvén a mezõre, leszüretelték szõlõiket, [mindjárt] ki is taposták, és örömünnepet ültek, és bementek az õ istenöknek házába, és ettek és ittak, és szidalmazták Abiméleket.
28 És monda Gaál, Ebed fia: Kicsoda Abimélek és kicsoda Sekem, hogy szolgáljunk néki? Nem Jerubbaál fia-é õ, és [nem] Zebul-é az õ kormányzója? Ti szolgáljátok Hámornak, Sekem atyjának férfiait; de miért szolgálnánk mi?
29 Csak volna az én kezemben e nép, [majd] elûzném Abiméleket. És monda Abiméleknek: Öregbítsd meg seregedet, és jõjj ki!
30 Mikor pedig meghallotta Zebul, a városnak kormányzója, Gaálnak, az Ebed fiának beszédit, nagy haragra gyulladt,
31 És követeket küldött Abimélekhez Thormába, [ezt] izenvén: Ímé Gaál, az Ebed fia és az õ testvérei Sikembe jöttek, és fellázítják a várost te ellened.
32 Most azért készülj fel éjszaka, te és a te néped, mely veled van, és állj lesbe a mezõn.
33 És reggel, napfelköltekor korán kelj fel, és törj a városra, és mikor õ és az õ népe kivonul ellened: cselekedjél vele a szerint, a mint akarod.
34 És felkelt Abimélek és az egész nép, a mely vele volt, éjszaka, és lesbe állottak Sikem ellen négy csapatban.
35 És kijött Gaál, az Ebed fia és megállott a város kapujának nyílásában. És felkelt Abimélek is, meg a nép is, mely vele volt, a lesbõl.
36 És a mint meglátta Gaál a csapatot, monda Zebulnak: Ímé nép jõ alá a hegyeknek tetejérõl. Zebul pedig monda néki: A hegyek árnyékát nézed férfiaknak.
37 De Gaál [csak] folytatta beszédét, és monda: Ímé [egy másik] csapat meg az ország közepébõl jõ alá; a [harmadik] csapat pedig a jós-tölgyfa útján jõ.
38 Ekkor monda néki Zebul: Hol van most szád, melylyel mondád: Kicsoda Abimélek, hogy szolgáljunk néki? Nem ez a nép-é az, a melyet kisebbítettél? No, most vonulj ki ellene, és harczolj vele.
39 És kivonult Gaál Sikem polgárainak élén, és megütközött Abimélekkel.
40 De Abimélek megfutamította, úgy hogy elmenekült elõle, és sok sebesült elesett a kapu bejáratáig.
41 Abimélek pedig Arumában maradt, és Zebul elûzte Gaált és atyjafiait, hogy ne lakjanak Sikemben.
42 És lõn, hogy másnap kiméne a nép a mezõre, és megmondák Abiméleknek.
43 És az vette az õ népét, és három csapatra osztotta el, és lesbe állott a mezõn; és látta, hogy ímé a nép jõ ki a városból. Rájok támadt, és megverte õket.
44 És Abimélek és az a csapat, a mely vele volt, megtámadta és megszállotta a város kapuját; [a másik] két csapat pedig megtámadta mind a mezõn levõket, és megverte õket.
45 És Abimélek egész nap vívta a várost, mígnem bevette a várost, és a népet, mely benne volt, leölte: a várost pedig lerombolta, és behinté azt sóval.
46 Mikor pedig [ezt] meghallották Sikem tornyának minden férfiai, az El- Berith [isten] házának várába mentek.
47 És mikor Abiméleknek elmondották, hogy Sikem tornyának minden férfiai [ott] gyûltek össze:
48 Felment Abimélek a Sálmon hegyére, õ és az egész nép, mely vele volt, és fejszét vett kezébe, és faágakat vágott le, és azokat felszedte, és vállára rakta, és monda a népnek, a mely vele volt: A mit láttatok, hogy cselekedtem, ti is azt tegyétek gyorsan, mint én.
49 Erre az egész népbõl kiki vágott magának ágakat, és követték Abiméleket, és lerakták [a fát] a vár körül, és tûzzel rájuk gyujtották a várat, úgy hogy meghaltak a Sikem tornyának minden férfiai, közel ezer férfi és asszony.
50 Abimélek pedig elment Thébesbe, és táborba szállott Thébes ellen, és bevette azt.
51 De egy erõs torony volt a város közepén, és oda menekült minden férfi és asszony, és a városnak minden lakosa; [ezt] magukra zárták, és a toronynak padlására mentek fel.
52 És Abimélek oda ment a toronyig, és ostrom alá vette azt, és egészen a torony ajtajáig közeledett, hogy azt tûzzel égesse fel.
53 Akkor egy asszony egy malomkõdarabot gördített le Abimélek fejére, és bezúzta koponyáját.
54 Ki mindjárt oda hívta fegyverhordozó apródját, és monda néki: Vond ki kardodat, és ölj meg engem, hogy ne mondják felõlem: Asszony ölte meg õt! És keresztülszúrta õt az apród, és meghalt.
55 Mikor pedig az Izráel férfiai látták, hogy Abimélek meghalt, kiki visszatért a maga helyére.
56 Így fizetett meg Isten Abiméleknek azért a gonoszságért, melyet atyja ellen elkövetett, hogy megölte hetven testvérét.
57 És a Sikem férfiainak fejére is visszahárított Isten minden rosszat, és reájuk szállott Jóthámnak, a Jerubbaál fiának átka.

Abímelek uralomra tör
9 Gedeon[a] fia, Abímelek egyszer meglátogatta a rokonait Sikemben, ahol az anyja élt. Azt mondta nekik: 2 „Kérlek, beszéljetek Sikem férfiaival, és mondjátok nekik: Gondoljátok csak meg, mi jobb nektek, ha Gedeon 70 fia uralkodik rajtatok, vagy ha egy ember? Ne felejtsétek el, hogy én közületek való vagyok! Végül is, vérrokonok vagyunk, nem igaz?”
3 Abímelek rokonai beszéltek a város férfiaival, és rábeszélték őket, hogy támogassák és kövessék Abímeleket. „Végül is, ő közénk tartozik, nem igaz?” — mondták egymásnak. 4 Azután adtak Abímeleknek 70 sékel ezüstöt Baál-Berit bálványtemplomának kincstárából, ő meg fölbérelt néhány semmirekellő, hitvány embert, hogy kövessék. 5 Ezekkel együtt elment apja házához Ofrába, és ott meggyilkolta az összes testvérét: Jerubbaál fiait. 6 Ezután a férfiak Sikemből és Bet-Millóból összegyűltek a nagy tölgyfánál, amely a Sikem melletti oszlopnál áll, és egy akarattal királlyá tették Abímeleket.

7 Amikor ezt Jótám megtudta, fölment a Garizim-hegy[b] tetejére, és hangosan kiáltott, hogy a sikemi férfiak jól hallják:
„Hallgassatok meg engem Sikem férfiai, hogy Isten is meghallgasson titeket!
8 Egyszer a fák elhatározták, hogy királyt választanak maguknak. Kérték az olajfát: »Te légy a királyunk!«
9 De az nem állt kötélnek: »Az én olajommal Istent és embert egyaránt tisztelnek. Ne teremjek többé olajat, hanem menjek el, és hajladozzak a többi fák felett?«
10 Akkor a fügefához fordultak: »Akkor légy te a királyunk!«
11 De az sem fogadta el: »Ne teremjek többé édes gyümölcsöket, hanem hajladozzak a többi fák felett?«
12 Szóltak akkor a szőlőnek: »Legyél hát te a királyunk!«
13 De ő sem vállalta: »Ne teremjek többé édes bort, amely megörvendeztet isteneket és embereket, hanem hajladozzak a többi fák felett?«
14 Végül a tüskebokorhoz mentek a fák: »Te legyél a királyunk!«
15 Válaszolt a tüskebokor: »Ha igazán akarjátok, hogy a királyotok legyek, akkor jöjjetek árnyékomba pihenni! De ha nem, akkor csapjon ki tűz a tüskebokorból, és égesse el Libanon cédrusait!«
16 Férfiak! Gondoljátok meg, igazságosan és helyesen tettétek-e, hogy Abímeleket választottátok királlyá! Úgy bántatok-e Jerubbaál családjával, ahogy megérdemelte volna? 17 Hiszen apám értetek harcolt, és élete kockáztatásával mentett meg titeket a midjániaktól! 18 Ti pedig azzal háláltátok meg, hogy ma megtámadtátok apám családját, és legyilkoltátok mind a 70 fiát egy kövön! Azután Abímeleket — akinek az anyja csak szolgálója volt apámnak — királlyá tettétek Sikemben, csak azért, mert rokonotok! 19 Ha tehát igazságosan bántatok Jerubbaállal és családjával, akkor örüljetek királyotoknak, Abímeleknek, és ő is örüljön nektek! 20 De ha nem, akkor csapjon ki tűz Abímelekből, és az égesse meg Sikem és Bet-Milló férfiait! Ugyanígy csapjon ki tűz a Sikem és Bet-Milló férfiaiból, és égesse meg Abímeleket!”
21 Ezután Jótám elfutott. Beerbe menekült, és ott lakott, mert félt a féltestvérétől, Abímelektől.
Viszály Abímelek és Sikem polgárai között
22 Ezután három évig Abímelek uralkodott Izráelben. 23 Akkor Isten egy gonosz szellemet küldött Abímelek és Sikem polgárai közé. Ekkor Sikem polgárai elfordultak Abímelektől, és elárulták. 24 Így büntette meg Isten Abímeleket, amiért meggyilkolta Gedeon 70 fiát, a testvéreit. Ugyanakkor megbüntette Sikem férfiait is, mert támogatták Abímeleket ebben a gonoszságban. 25 Sikem polgárai Abímelek ellen küldtek egy csapatot, hogy álljanak lesben a hegyekben, az út mellett, és fogják el őt is, ahogy szokásuk szerint az arra utazókat elfogták és kirabolták. De valaki ezt jelentette Abímeleknek, így őt nem tudták elfogni.
26 Gaal, Ebed fia közben Sikembe költözött testvéreivel együtt. A város lakói pedig megbíztak benne.
27 Eljött a szüret ideje: a sikemiek a szőlőt szedték és taposták, nagy szüreti mulatságot rendeztek, majd bementek bálványistenük templomába, ettek-ittak, és Abímeleket ócsárolták. 28 Akkor Gaal, Ebed fia ezt mondta a többieknek: „Mi Sikem polgárai vagyunk, nem igaz?! Akkor minek szolgáljuk Abímeleket? Mit képzel ez magáról? Hiszen csak Jerubbaál fia! Azután itt van a kormányzója, Zebul! Mi közünk nekünk hozzá? Miért szolgáljuk mi Zebult? Akkor már szolgáljuk inkább a saját embereinket: Sikem apjának, Hamórnak népét! 29 Lennék csak én a város parancsnoka! Rögtön elzavarnám innen Abímeleket! Azt mondanám Abímeleknek: »Most szedd össze a katonáidat, és gyere, mérkőzz meg az én seregemmel!«”
30 A város kormányzója, Zebul is megtudta ezt, és nagyon felháborodott rajta. 31 Titokban megüzente Abímeleknek:
„Tudd meg, hogy Gaal, Ebed fia, a testvéreivel Sikembe költözött, és most ellened lázítja a várost. 32 Indulj hát el a seregeddel még ma éjjel, és álljatok lesben a mezőn, a kapuk előtt. 33 Reggel, ahogy feljön a nap, támadjatok a városra! Amikor Gaal kivonul ellened a mezőre, számolj le vele!”
34 Abímelek meg is fogadta Zebul tanácsát, és éjjel a seregével együtt Sikem ellen vonult. Négy csapatra oszolva hajnalig lesben álltak a város előtt. 35 Gaal, Ebed fia, reggel kiment a városkapu elé. Ezután Abímelek csapatai leshelyükről támadásra indultak a város ellen.
36 Gaal észrevette, és szólt a mellette álló Zebulnak: „Nézd csak! Ott a távoli hegyoldalon csapatok közelednek felénk!”
De Zebul úgy tett, mintha nem látna semmit: „Nincs ott senki, csak a hegyek árnyékát látod!” — válaszolta.
37 De Gaal ismét látott valamit: „De nézz oda! Egy csapat közeledik a Tabbur-Erec felől, és egy másik a Jövendőmondók Tölgyfája felől!”
38 Akkor Zebul így felelt neki: „Hol van most az a nagy szád? Nem te mondtad: »Ki az az Abímelek, hogy őt szolgáljuk?« Nézd, itt jönnek azok, akiket ócsároltál! Most hát menj, és harcolj velük, ha tudsz!”
39 Gaal sietve kivonult Sikem harcosainak élén, és megütközött Abímelek seregével. 40 De vereséget szenvedett, megfutamodott, és igyekezett visszajutni a városba, Abímelek pedig üldözte. Gaal seregéből nagyon sokan elestek, mielőtt elérték volna a városkaput, neki azonban sikerült bemenekülnie Sikembe.
41 Abímelek ezután visszatért Arúmába, mert ott táborozott. Zebul kormányzó pedig elűzte Sikemből Gaalt és rokonait.
42 Másnap reggel Sikemből kimentek az emberek a környező földekre dolgozni. Amikor ezt Abímelek megtudta, 43-44 három csapatra osztotta seregét, és lesben állt Sikem közelében, hogy váratlanul lecsapjon rájuk. Két csapat megvárta, amíg a sikemiek kijöttek a városból. Akkor rájuk rontottak, és vágni kezdték őket. A harmadik csapat, amelyet Abímelek vezetett, egyenesen a város kapujához rohant, és elállta az utat. 45 Egész nap tartott az ütközet, végül Abímelek elfoglalta és lerombolta Sikemet, annak lakosait pedig megölte. Még a város romjait is sóval hintette be.
46 Amikor Migdól-Sikem[c] lakói ezt megtudták, összegyűltek és bemenekültek bálványistenük, Él-Berit[d] templomának a rejtekhelyére. 47-48 Ezt azonban Abímelek is megtudta, és csapatával együtt fölment a Calmón-hegyre.[e] Ott a fákról ágakat vágott le, a vállára vette, és meghagyta az embereinek, hogy sietve kövessék a példáját. 49 Így is tettek, és együttes erővel nagy csomó ágat hordtak össze Sikembe. Ezeket mind lerakták az Él-Berit templom körül, és fölgyújtották az egészet. Így pusztultak el mindazok, akik oda menekültek: körülbelül ezren, asszonyok és férfiak egyaránt.
Abímelek halála
50 Ezután Abímelek Tábéc városa ellen vonult, és ostromolni kezdte. El is foglalta, 51 de a város közepén volt egy erős és magas torony, ahová a város lakói mind bemenekültek. A torony kapuját erősen bezárták, azután fölmentek a torony tetejére. 52 Abímelek ostromolta a tornyot, és már egész közel jutott a kapujához. Az volt a szándéka, hogy fölgyújtja a kaput. 53 Ekkor azonban a torony tetejéről az egyik asszony ledobta egy kézimalom őrlőkövét Abímelek fejére, akinek betört a koponyája, és halálosan megsebesült. 54 Abímeleknek még maradt annyi ereje, hogy a fegyverhordozójának ezt mondta: „Húzd ki a kardod, és te ölj meg! Ne mondhassa rólam senki, hogy asszony ölt meg!” A fegyverhordozója át is szúrta Abímeleket, aki meghalt. 55 Amikor csapata látta, hogy Abímelek halott, abbahagyták a harcot, és mindnyájan visszatértek a családjukhoz.
56 Így büntette meg Isten Abímeleket azért a gonoszságért, amelyet apja ellen elkövetett, mikor meggyilkolta 70 testvérét. 57 Ugyanakkor megfizetett Sikem férfiainak is gonosz tetteikért: beteljesedett rajtuk Jótám, Jerubbaál fiának átka.

Abimelek
9 Abimelek(A) son of Jerub-Baal(B) went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan, 2 “Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.(C)”
3 When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.” 4 They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(D) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(E) who became his followers. 5 He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(F) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(G) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(H) 6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(I) gathered beside the great tree(J) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
7 When Jotham(K) was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim(L) and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine,(M) which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade;(N) but if not, then let fire come out(O) of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’(P)
16 “Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves? 17 Remember that my father fought for you and risked(Q) his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian. 18 But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons(R) on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you. 19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today?(S) If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too! 20 But if you have not, let fire come out(T) from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem(U) and Beth Millo,(V) and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
21 Then Jotham(W) fled, escaping to Beer,(X) and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.
22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(Y) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(Z) the shedding(AA) of their blood, might be avenged(AB) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(AC) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(AD) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him. 27 After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden(AE) them, they held a festival in the temple of their god.(AF) While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed(AG) said, “Who(AH) is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor,(AI) Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek? 29 If only this people were under my command!(AJ) Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’”[b](AK)
30 When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry. 31 Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait(AL) in the fields. 33 In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.(AM)”
34 So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies. 35 Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate(AN) just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.(AO)
36 When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
37 But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill,[c] and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed?(AP) Go out and fight them!”
39 So Gaal led out[d] the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek. 40 Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled. 41 Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek. 43 So he took his men, divided them into three companies(AQ) and set an ambush(AR) in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down. 45 All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city(AS) and scattered salt(AT) over it.
46 On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple(AU) of El-Berith. 47 When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there, 48 he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon.(AV) He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!” 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
50 Next Abimelek went to Thebez(AW) and besieged it and captured it. 51 Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.(AX)
54 Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me,(AY) so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness.(AZ) The curse of Jotham(BA) son of Jerub-Baal came on them.

2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.
32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
37 And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.
44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
