Inusig ni Saulo ang Iglesya

Sinang-ayunan ni Saulo ang pagpatay kay Esteban.

Nang araw na iyon, nagsimula ang matinding pag-uusig laban sa iglesya sa Jerusalem; at maliban sa mga apostol, ang lahat ng sumasampalataya ay nagkawatak-watak at napunta sa iba't ibang lugar sa lupain ng Judea at Samaria. Si Esteban nama'y inilibing ng mga taong may takot sa Diyos at tinangisan nang gayon na lamang.

Samantala,(A) sinikap ni Saulo na wasakin ang iglesya; pinasok niya ang mga bahay-bahay at kanyang kinaladkad at ibinilanggo ang mga sumasampalataya, maging lalaki o babae.

Ipinangaral sa Samaria ang Magandang Balita

Ipinangaral ng mga mananampalatayang nagkawatak-watak sa iba't ibang lugar ang Salita saan man sila magpunta. Nagpunta si Felipe sa lungsod[a] ng Samaria at ipinahayag doon ang Cristo. Nang marinig ng mga tao si Felipe at makita ang mga himalang ginawa niya, nakinig silang mabuti sa kanyang sinasabi. Ang masasamang espiritu ay lumabas sa mga taong sinapian nila at sumisigaw habang lumalabas. Maraming lumpo at pilay ang pinagaling kaya't nagkaroon ng malaking kagalakan sa lungsod na iyon.

Doo'y may isang lalaking ang pangalan ay Simon. Noong una, pinapahanga niya ang mga Samaritano sa pamamagitan ng salamangka. Ipinagmamalaki niya na siya'y isang dakilang tao, 10 at pinapakinggan naman siya ng lahat, mula sa pinakamababa hanggang sa pinakamataas sa lipunan, “Ang lalaking ito ang kapangyarihan ng Diyos na tinatawag na Dakila,” sabi nila. 11 Mahabang panahon ding sila'y pinahanga niya sa pamamagitan ng kanyang salamangka, kaya't siya'y patuloy na pinapakinggan nila. 12 Ngunit nang sumampalataya sila nang ipangaral ni Felipe ang Magandang Balita tungkol sa kaharian ng Diyos at tungkol kay Jesu-Cristo, nagpabautismo ang mga lalaki't babae. 13 Pati si Simon ay sumampalataya rin, at nang mabautismuhan ay patuloy siyang sumama kay Felipe. Humanga si Simon nang makita niya ang mga himala.

14 Nang mabalitaan ng mga apostol sa Jerusalem na tinanggap ng mga Samaritano ang salita ng Diyos, isinugo nila roon sina Pedro at Juan. 15 Pagdating doon, ipinanalangin ng dalawang apostol ang mga Samaritano upang sila'y tumanggap din ng Espiritu Santo, 16 sapagkat hindi pa ito bumababa sa kaninuman sa kanila. Sila'y nabautismuhan pa lamang sa pangalan ng Panginoong Jesus. 17 Ipinatong nina Pedro at Juan ang kanilang kamay sa mga Samaritano at tumanggap ang mga ito ng Espiritu Santo.

18 Nakita ni Simon na ang Espiritu'y ipinagkakaloob sa pamamagitan ng pagpapatong ng kamay ng mga apostol, kaya't inalok niya ng salapi sina Pedro at Juan. 19 “Bigyan din ninyo ako ng kapangyarihang ito upang ang sinumang patungan ko ng kamay ay tumanggap ng Espiritu Santo,” sabi niya.

20 Sinagot siya ni Pedro, “Nawa'y mapapahamak ka kasama ng iyong salapi, sapagkat inakala mong mabibili ng salapi ang kaloob ng Diyos! 21 Wala kang bahagi ni karapatan sa bagay na ito, sapagkat hindi tama ang iyong puso sa paningin ng Diyos. 22 Pagsisihan mo ang kasamaan mong ito at manalangin ka sa Panginoon, na nawa'y patawarin ka niya sa iyong hangarin, 23 dahil nakikita kong puno ka ng inggit at bilanggo ng kasalanan.”

24 Sumagot si Simon, “Idalangin ninyo ako sa Panginoon, para hindi ko sapitin ang alinman sa mga sinabi ninyo!”

25 Pagkatapos magpatotoo at mangaral ng salita ng Panginoon, bumalik sa Jerusalem sina Pedro at Juan. Ipinangaral nila ang Magandang Balita tungkol kay Cristo sa maraming nayon ng Samaria na kanilang dinaanan.

Si Felipe at ang Pinunong Taga-Etiopia

26 Pagkatapos, sinabi ng isang anghel ng Panginoon kay Felipe, “Pumunta ka sa gawing timog sa daang mula sa Jerusalem papuntang Gaza.” Halos hindi na iyon dinadaanan ngayon. 27 Pumunta nga doon si Felipe. Samantala, isang eunuko na pinunong taga-Etiopia, na ingat-yaman ng Candace, reyna ng Etiopia, ang nagtungo sa Jerusalem upang sumamba 28 at pauwi na noon, nakasakay sa kanyang karwahe at nagbabasa ng aklat ni Propeta Isaias. 29 “Sabayan mo ang sasakyang iyon,” utos ng Espiritu kay Felipe. 30 Kaya patakbong lumapit si Felipe at narinig niyang binabasa ng pinuno ang aklat ni Propeta Isaias. Tinanong ni Felipe ang pinuno, “Nauunawaan ba ninyo ang inyong binabasa?”

31 Sagot naman nito, “Paano ko mauunawaan ito kung walang magpapaliwanag sa akin?” At si Felipe ay inanyayahan niyang sumakay sa karwahe at umupo sa kanyang tabi. 32 Ito(B) ang bahagi ng kasulatang binabasa niya:

“Siya ay tulad ng isang tupang dinadala sa katayan;
    tulad ng isang korderong hindi tumututol kahit na gupitan.
    At hindi umiimik kahit kaunti man.
33 Siya'y hinamak at pinagkaitan ng katarungan.
    Walang sinumang makapagsasalaysay tungkol sa kanyang angkan,
    sapagkat kinitil nila ang kanyang buhay.”

34 Nagtanong kay Felipe ang pinuno, “Sabihin mo nga sa akin, sino ba ang tinutukoy dito ng propeta? Sarili ba niya o iba?”

35 Simula sa kasulatang ito ay isinalaysay sa kanya ni Felipe ang Magandang Balita tungkol kay Jesus. 36 Nagpatuloy sila sa paglalakbay, at dumating sa isang lugar na may tubig. Kaya't sinabi ng pinuno, “Tingnan mo, may tubig dito! Mayroon bang hadlang upang ako'y bautismuhan?” [37 Sinabi sa kanya ni Felipe, “Maaari, kung sumasampalataya ka nang buong puso.” Sumagot ang pinuno, “Sumasampalataya ako na si Jesu-Cristo ang Anak ng Diyos!”][b]

38 Pinatigil ng pinuno ang karwahe, lumusong silang dalawa sa tubig at binautismuhan siya ni Felipe. 39 Pagkaahon nila sa tubig, si Felipe ay kinuha ng Espiritu ng Panginoon at hindi na siya nakita pa ng pinuno. Ang pinuno ay tuwang-tuwang nagpatuloy sa paglalakbay. 40 Namalayan na lamang ni Felipe na siya'y nasa Azoto. Mula roon, ipinangaral niya ang Magandang Balita tungkol kay Jesus sa lahat ng bayang dinaraanan niya hanggang sa marating niya ang Cesarea.

Saul Attempts to Destroy the Church

And Saul was agreeing with his murder. Now there happened on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation over him. But Saul was attempting to destroy the church. Entering house after house,[a] he dragged off both men and women and[b] delivered them[c] to prison.

Philip Proclaims Christ in Samaria

Now those who had been scattered went about proclaiming the good news of the word. And Philip came down to the city of Samaria and[d] began proclaiming[e] the Christ[f] to them. And the crowds with one mind were paying attention to what was being said by Philip, as they heard him[g] and saw the signs that he was performing. For many of those who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them,[h] crying out with a loud voice, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.

Simon the Magician

Now a certain man named[i] Simon had been in the city practicing magic and astonishing the people of Samaria, saying he was someone great. 10 They were all paying attention to him,[j] from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called ‘Great.’” 11 And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astonished them with his[k] magic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he[l] was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being baptized. 13 And Simon himself also believed, and after he[m] was baptized he was keeping close company with[n] Philip. And when he[o] saw the signs and great miracles that were taking place, he was astonished.

14 Now when[p] the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who went down and[q] prayed for them so that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (For he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized[r] in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then they placed their[s] hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 Now Simon, when he[t] saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, offered them money, 19 saying, “Give to me also this power, so that whomever I place my[u] hands on may receive the Holy Spirit!” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver be destroyed along with you,[v] because you thought you could acquire[w] the gift of God by means of money! 21 You have no[x] part or share in this matter, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and ask the Lord if perhaps the intent of your heart may be forgiven you!” 23 For I see you are in a state of bitter envy[y] and bound by unrighteousness.”[z] 24 But Simon answered and[aa] said, “You pray to the Lord for me so that nothing of what you have said will come upon me.” 25 So when[ab] they had solemnly testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they turned back toward Jerusalem, and were proclaiming the good news to many villages of the Samaritans.

Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch

26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Get up and go toward the south[ac] on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.) 27 And he got up and[ad] went, and behold, there was a man, an Ethiopian eunuch (a court official of Candace,[ae] queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasury) who had come to worship in Jerusalem 28 and was returning and sitting in his chariot, and reading aloud the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Approach and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran up to it[af] and[ag] heard him reading aloud Isaiah the prophet and said, “So then, do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “So how could I, unless someone will guide me?” And he invited Philip to come up and[ah] sit with him. 32 Now the passage of scripture that he was reading aloud was this:

“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
    and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
33     In his[ai] humiliation justice was taken from him.
Who can describe his descendants?[aj]
    For his life was taken away from the earth.”[ak]

34 And the eunuch answered and[al] said to Philip, “I ask you, about whom does the prophet say this—about himself or about someone else?” 35 So Philip opened his mouth and beginning from this scripture, proclaimed the good news to him about Jesus. 36 And as they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”[am] 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water—Philip and the eunuch—and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him any longer, for he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he[an] passed through, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.
