⁶ God spoke in this way:

¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram,^(A) “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be foreigners^(B) in a land that does not belong to them; they will be enslaved and oppressed^[a] 400 years.^{(C) 14} However, I will judge the nation they serve,^(D) and afterward they will go out with many possessions.^{(E) 15} But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.^{(F) 16} In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”^[b](G)

⁴⁰ The time that the Israelites lived in Egypt^[a] was 430 years.^{(A) 41} At the end of 430 years, on that same day, all the Lord’s divisions went out from the land of Egypt.

¹⁶ Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say “and to seeds,” as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed,^(A)[a] who is Christ. ¹⁷ And I say this: The law, which came 430 years later,^(B) does not revoke a covenant that was previously ratified by God^[b] and cancel the promise.
