Idolatry at Lystra

(A)And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. This man heard Paul speaking. [a]Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 said with a loud voice, (B)“Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked. 11 Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, (C)“The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 And Barnabas they called [b]Zeus, and Paul, [c]Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, (D)intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.

14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, (E)they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out 15 and saying, “Men, (F)why are you doing these things? (G)We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from (H)these useless things (I)to the living God, (J)who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, 16 (K)who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. 17 (L)Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, (M)gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with (N)food and gladness.” 18 And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.

10 And he carried me away (A)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me (B)the [a]great city, the [b]holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 (C)having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 12 Also she had a great and high wall with (D)twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 (E)three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.

14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and (F)on them were the [c]names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he who talked with me (G)had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand [d]furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. 17 Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 (H)The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve (I)pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. (J)And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

The Glory of the New Jerusalem

22 (K)But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

21 (A)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [a]manifest Myself to him.”

22 (B)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, (C)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and (D)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But (E)the [b]Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will (F)send in My name, (G)He will teach you all things, and bring to your (H)remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 (I)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
