O julgamento do Senhor sobre Acazias
1 Após a morte de Acabe, a nação de Moabe declarou a sua independência e recusou continuar a pagar impostos a Israel.
2 O novo rei de Israel, Acazias, caiu da varanda dum andar alto do seu palácio em Samaria e ficou gravemente ferido. Na sequência deste acontecimento, enviou mensageiros ao templo do deus Baal-Zebube, em Ecrom, para perguntarem se recuperaria.
3 Contudo, o anjo do Senhor disse a Elias, o tesbita: “Vai ao encontro desses mensageiros e pergunta-lhes: Será mesmo verdade que já não há Deus em Israel? Será por essa razão que vão ter com Baal-Zebube, o deus de Ecrom, para lhe perguntar se o rei há de recuperar? 4 Visto que Acazias tomou uma decisão dessas, o Senhor manda dizer que nunca mais deixará a cama em que está deitado; infalivelmente morrerá.” Elias fez como o anjo lhe ordenou.
5 Depois de Elias lhes ter dito isto, os mensageiros regressaram apressadamente para falar com o rei. “Porque é que regressaram tão depressa?”, perguntou-lhes.
6 “É que veio ter connosco um homem que nos mandou regressar para te dizer o seguinte: ‘Diz assim o Senhor: “Por que razão vão dirigir perguntas a Baal-Zebube, o deus de Ecrom? Será porque não há Deus em Israel? Visto que fizeste uma tal coisa, não deixarás mais a cama em que estás e com toda a certeza hás de morrer.” ’ ”
7 “Mas quem era esse homem?”, exigiu o rei. “Que aspeto tinha?”
8 “Tinha o cabelo comprido, vestia-se de peles e trazia um cinto de couro.” O rei exclamou: “É o profeta Elias, o tesbita!”
9 Mandou logo um grupo de cinquenta soldados, sob o comando de um oficial, para o prender. Acharam-no sentado no alto duma colina. Disse-lhe o oficial: “Ó homem de Deus, o rei ordena-te que venhas connosco.”
10 Elias respondeu: “Se sou um homem de Deus, que desça fogo do céu para vos destruir, a ti e aos teus cinquenta homens!” Então veio um raio que os matou a todos.
11 O rei mandou outro oficial com mais um grupo de cinquenta homens: “Ó homem de Deus, o rei manda que desças já daí!”
12 Elias respondeu: “Se sou um homem de Deus, que venha fogo do céu e vos destrua, a ti e aos teus cinquenta soldados!” E novamente veio fogo, da parte de Deus, que os queimou.
13 Uma vez mais o rei enviou cinquenta soldados; mas desta vez o capitão caiu de joelhos perante Elias e rogou-lhe: “Ó homem de Deus, peço-te que me poupes a vida e a destes teus cinquenta servos. Tem misericórdia de nós! 14 Não nos destruas, como aconteceu com os outros!”
15 O anjo do Senhor disse a Elias: “Não tenhas receio. Podes ir com estes.” Elias foi então ter com o rei.
16 E disse-lhe: “Porque mandaste enviados a Baal-Zebube, o deus de Ecrom, para te informares sobre a tua doença, assim te diz o Senhor: ‘Será que não há Deus em Israel a quem te dirigires? Visto que fizeste uma tal coisa, não deixarás mais essa cama; com toda a certeza morrerás.’ ”
17 Assim morreu Acazias, tal como o Senhor dissera por intermédio de Elias. O seu irmão Jorão tornou-se o novo rei, porque Acazias não teve filhos que lhe sucedessem. Isto ocorreu no segundo ano do reinado do rei Jeorão, filho de Jeosafá de Judá. 18 O resto da história do reinado de Acazias está relatado no Livro das Crónicas dos Reis de Israel.
Elias é arrebatado
2 1-2 Tinha chegado a altura do Senhor levar Elias para o céu num remoinho. Elias disse a Eliseu, quando deixaram Gilgal: “Fica aqui, porque o Senhor disse-me que fosse a Betel.” Eliseu respondeu-lhe: “Tão certo como vive o Senhor e vive a tua alma, que não te deixarei!” Foram pois a Betel juntos. 3 Os jovens profetas da escola de Betel vieram ao encontro deles e perguntaram a Eliseu: “Sabes que o Senhor vai levar Elias hoje para si?” “Sim, calem-se!” respondeu Eliseu. “Já sei isso.”
4 Elias disse a Eliseu: “Peço-te que fiques aqui em Betel, porque o Senhor mandou-me a Jericó.” Eliseu tornou a responder: “Tão certo como vive o Senhor e vive a tua alma que não te deixarei.” Por isso, foram juntos até Jericó.
5 Os estudantes da escola de Jericó vieram ter com Eliseu e perguntaram-lhe: “Sabes que o Senhor vai levar o teu mestre para si?” Eliseu respondeu: “Estejam calados. Eu sei bem!”
6 Elias disse a Eliseu: “Por favor, fica aqui, porque o Senhor mandou-me ao rio Jordão.” Eliseu respondeu como anteriormente: “Tão certo como vive o Senhor e vive a tua alma que não te deixarei.”
7 Foram juntos e chegaram ao rio Jordão, enquanto os cinquenta jovens profetas ficavam a ver, à distância. 8 Elias tirou a capa, dobrou-a e bateu com ela na água; a torrente dividiu-se e eles passaram a seco.
9 Quando chegaram ao outro lado, Elias disse a Eliseu: “Pede-me o que quiseres, antes que eu seja levado.” E Eliseu respondeu: “Peço-te que me dês uma porção dobrada do teu poder profético.[a]”
10 “Pedes uma dura coisa. Se puderes ver-me, quando for levado de junto de ti, obterás o que pretendes. Se não, não o obterás.”
11 Enquanto iam caminhando e conversando, de repente um carro de fogo apareceu e passou pelo meio deles, separando-os. Elias foi, assim, levado para os céus num remoinho. 12 Eliseu, que viu tudo, gritou: “Meu pai! Meu pai! Carro de Israel e seus condutores!” Quando o carro desapareceu, Eliseu rasgou a sua roupa.
13 Depois pegou na capa que Elias deixou cair e voltou para a margem do Jordão. 14 Pegou, então, na capa que Elias tinha deixado cair e bateu na água com ela, dizendo: “Onde está o Senhor, o Deus de Elias?.” A corrente separou-se e Eliseu passou em seco para o outro lado.
15 Quando os jovens profetas de Jericó viram o que acontecera, disseram: “O poder profético de Elias ficou em Eliseu!” E foram ter com ele e inclinaram-se diante dele até ao chão. 16 “Senhor, basta que digas uma palavra e cinquenta dos nossos homens mais valentes irão à procura do teu senhor no deserto; talvez o Espírito do Senhor o tenha deixado sobre algum monte ou ravina.” Eliseu respondeu: “Não façam nada disso.”
17 Contudo, eles continuaram a insistir, a ponto de o importunarem; por fim acedeu: “Está bem! Vão lá!” Foram então cinquenta rapazes à procura dele durante três dias, mas não o acharam. 18 Eliseu estava ainda em Jericó quando eles voltaram: “Não vos disse para não irem?”
Purificação da água
19 Os responsáveis da cidade de Jericó vieram falar com Eliseu: “Temos um problema: a cidade está bem localizada, como podes ver, mas a água é má e a terra é estéril.”
20 “Tragam-me uma tigela nova cheia de sal.” Trouxeram-lha. 21 Depois, dirigiu-se ao poço da povoação e deitou lá para dentro o sal, dizendo: “O Senhor curou estas águas. Não mais causarão nem morte nem infertilidade.” 22 Na verdade, as águas ficaram purificadas, tal como Eliseu dissera.
Rapazes fazem troça de Eliseu
23 De Jericó dirigiu-se a Betel. Quando ia a caminho, alguns rapazes da cidade começaram a troçar dele. “Sobe, careca!”, gritavam eles. “Sobe, careca!” 24 Ele voltou-se e amaldiçoou-os em nome do Senhor. Apareceram então duas ursas que saíam dos bosques e mataram quarenta e dois deles. 25 Depois foi para o monte Carmelo e finalmente voltou para Samaria.
Moabe revolta-se
3 Jorão, o filho de Acabe, começou o seu reinado sobre Israel, quando corria o décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Jeosafá sobre Judá. E reinou 12 anos em Samaria, a capital. 2 Fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, mas não tanto quanto o seu pai e a sua mãe, porque deitou abaixo o pilar que o pai erguera em honra de Baal. 3 Contudo, aderiu ao pecado de Jeroboão, o filho de Nebate, que tinha levado o povo de Israel ao culto dos ídolos.
4 O rei Messa de Moabe e o seu povo eram negociantes de gado. Pagavam a Israel um tributo anual de 100 000 cordeiros e mais a lã de 100 000 carneiros. 5 Contudo, após a morte de Acabe, o rei de Moabe rebelou-se contra Israel. 6 Por isso, o rei Jeorão mobilizou o seu exército. 7 Mandou mensageiros a Jeosafá, rei de Judá: “O rei de Moabe revoltou-se contra mim. Ajudas-me a combatê-lo?” Jeosafá respondeu: “Com certeza que sim. Podes dispor do meu povo e da minha cavalaria. 8 Quais são os teus planos de combate?” Jorão respondeu: “Atacaremos a partir do deserto de Edom.”
9 Dessa forma, os dois exércitos, reforçados com as tropas de Edom, fizeram uma marcha de sete dias através do deserto, para rodearem o inimigo. No entanto, faltou-lhes a água para os homens e para os animais.
10 “O que vamos fazer agora?”, gritava o rei de Israel. “O Senhor trouxe-nos aqui para sermos derrotados pelo rei de Moabe!”
11 Jeosafá perguntou: “Não há nenhum profeta do Senhor entre a nossa gente? Se houvesse, saberíamos o que fazer!” Um dos oficiais do rei de Israel respondeu: “Há Eliseu!” E acrescentou: “Era o assistente de Elias.”
12 Jeosafá respondeu: “É o homem de que precisamos; ele fala a mensagem do Senhor.” E os três reis, de Israel, Judá e Edom, foram consultar Eliseu.
13 “Não tenho nada a ver contigo”, disse Eliseu ao rei Jorão de Israel. “Vai ter com os falsos profetas do teu pai e da tua mãe!” Mas o rei respondeu: “Não. Porque foi o Senhor quem nos enviou até aqui para sermos destruídos pelo rei de Moabe!”
14 “Tão certo como vive o Senhor dos exércitos, em cuja presença eu sirvo, que, se não fosse pela presença do rei Jeosafá, de Judá, não me incomodaria um bocadinho sequer contigo”, retorquiu Eliseu. 15 “Tragam-me então alguém que toque a harpa.” Quando o músico começou a tocar, Eliseu recebeu a mensagem do Senhor: 16 “O Senhor ordena que façam covas em todo este vale seco. 17 Não hão de ver nem vento, nem chuva; mas este vale encher-se-á de água e poderão saciar-se, tanto os homens como os animais! 18 Isto é só uma pequena amostra do que o Senhor pode fazer; ele vos tornará vitoriosos sobre as tropas de Moabe! 19 Conquistarão o melhor das suas povoações, mesmo as que são fortificadas, e encherão de pedras todos os bons campos.”
20 Com efeito, no dia seguinte, por altura em que o sacrifício da manhã deveria ser oferecido, apareceu água. Corria, vinda do lado de Edom, e em breve havia água por toda a parte.
21 Entretanto, quando o povo moabita ouviu falar dos três exércitos que vinham contra ele, mobilizaram todos os homens válidos para a guerra, velhos e novos, e dispuseram-se ao longo da fronteira. 22 Logo cedo, na manhã seguinte, o Sol refletindo nas águas dava-lhes um tom vermelho de sangue. 23 “É sangue!”, começaram a gritar. “Os três exércitos, com toda a certeza, voltaram-se uns contra os outros e estão a matar-se mutuamente! Vamos depressa à presa!”
24 Quando chegaram ao acampamento militar dos israelitas, estes caíram sobre eles e começaram a matá-los. A tropa moabita fugiu. Os israelitas avançaram pela terra de Moabe, destruindo tudo à sua frente. 25 Arrasaram povoações, lançaram entulho sobre as terras e para dentro dos poços, cortaram as árvores frutíferas. No fim, apenas a fortaleza de Quir-Haresete tinha ficado de pé e mesmo essa acabou também por ser tomada pelos soldados, armados com fundas.
26 Quando o rei de Moabe viu que a batalha tinha sido perdida, reuniu 700 dos seus homens que melhor lutavam à espada e, num esforço desesperado, tentou ainda confrontar-se com o rei de Edom, mas não conseguiu. 27 Pegou então no seu filho mais velho, que estava destinado a suceder-lhe no trono e, perante o horror do exército Israelita, matou-o e sacrificou-o sobre a muralha. O exército de Israel regressou indignado para a sua terra.
O azeite da viúva
4 Um dia, a mulher de um membro do grupo dos profetas veio comunicar a Eliseu a morte do marido. “Era um homem que temia ao Senhor”, afirmou ela. Ele tivera de pedir emprestado algum dinheiro. Se não o pagasse, o credor viria tomar-lhe os seus dois filhos como escravos.
2 “E que queres tu que eu faça?”, perguntou Eliseu. “Diz-me lá, o que tens em casa?” “Nada! Tudo o que tenho é um jarro com azeite”, respondeu-lhe.
3 “Então vai pedir emprestadas muitas vasilhas aos teus vizinhos. 4 Volta para casa, fecha-te lá, com os teus filhos, e começa a encher todos esses recipientes, pondo-os de lado à medida que estiverem cheios.”
5 Ela assim fez. Os filhos iam-lhe trazendo vasilhas; ela ia-as enchendo, uma após outra. 6 Em breve todos os recipientes ficaram cheios. “Tragam mais vasilhas”, disse aos filhos. “Já não há mais!”, responderam. E nessa altura o azeite parou.
7 Quando foi contar ao homem de Deus o que tinha acontecido, ele respondeu-lhe: “Agora vai vender o azeite e paga a dívida e ainda te ficará bastante dinheiro para viveres com os teus filhos.”
A ressurreição do filho da sunamita
8 Um dia, Eliseu foi para Sunem. Uma mulher rica que ali vivia convidou-o para tomar uma refeição. A partir de então, sempre que por ali passava, parava para comer. 9 A mulher disse ao marido: “Tenho a certeza de que este homem que aqui vem de tempos a tempos é um santo homem de Deus. 10 Vamos preparar-lhe um quarto no sótão. Podemos lá pôr uma cama, uma mesa, uma cadeira e um candeeiro; ficará assim com um lugar certo para repousar sempre que por aqui passar.”
11 Uma vez, o profeta estava a descansar no quarto. 12 E disse para o seu criado Geazi: “Diz à mulher que preciso de lhe falar.” Quando ela apareceu, 13 pediu de novo a Geazi: “Explica-lhe que apreciamos muito a sua hospitalidade e pergunta-lhe o que podemos fazer em seu favor. Quererá ela, por exemplo, que apresente qualquer assunto junto do rei ou do comandante do exército?” Ela respondeu: “Não preciso de nada. Eu vivo bem, no meio da minha gente.”
14 “O que poderíamos fazer por ela?”, perguntou Eliseu de novo a Geazi, mais tarde. Por fim, este sugeriu: “Eles não têm filhos e o marido já é um homem idoso.”
15 “Chama-a lá outra vez.” Quando ela veio, o profeta disse-lhe, enquanto ela esperava à entrada do quarto: 16 “No ano que vem, na altura própria, terás um filho!” Ela exclamou: “Ó homem de Deus, peço-te que não me mintas dessa maneira!” 17 O certo é que isso aconteceu. A mulher em breve concebeu e teve depois um bebé, um rapaz, tal como Eliseu lhe prometera.
18 Um dia, quando o seu filho já era crescido, decidiu sair de casa para ir ter com o pai que se encontrava a trabalhar junto dos ceifeiros. 19 A certa altura, começou a queixar-se de fortes dores de cabeça: “Ai, a minha cabeça! Ai, a minha cabeça!”, gritava ele. O pai disse a um dos servos: “Leva-o à mãe, que está em casa.”
20 A mãe pô-lo sobre os joelhos e consolava-o, mas por volta do meio-dia acabou por falecer. 21 A mulher levou-o para cima, para o quarto do homem de Deus, deitou-o na cama e fechou a porta. 22 Depois, enviou um recado ao marido: “Manda um dos criados e um jumento; tenho de ir chamar o homem de Deus e voltar.”
23 “Porque precisas de ir hoje? Não é a festa da lua nova, nem dia de descanso.” Ela insistiu: “É muito importante que vá.”
24 Albardou o jumento e disse para o criado: “Depressa! Não abrandes a marcha, a menos que eu to diga.”
25 Quando já estavam próximos do monte Carmelo, Eliseu viu-a à distância e disse para Geazi: “Vem aí aquela mulher de Sunem. 26 Corre ao seu encontro e pergunta-lhe o que é que se passa. Pergunta-lhe se o marido e o filho estão bem.” Quando este a encontrou, ela respondeu a Geazi: “Tudo vai bem.”
27 No entanto, quando chegou junto de Eliseu, no monte, prostrou-se com o rosto no chão e agarrou-se aos seus pés. Geazi aproximou-se para tentar afastá-la, mas o homem de Deus disse-lhe: “Deixa-a em paz; a sua alma está carregada de amargura e o Senhor não me disse o que se passa.”
28 Depois ela falou: “Foste tu quem me disse que haveria de ter um filho e eu pedi-te que não me enganasses!”
29 Eliseu ordenou a Geazi: “Corre, vai já buscar o meu bordão e parte! Não saúdes a ninguém pelo caminho, nem respondas a ninguém. Chegando lá, põe o bordão sobre o rosto do menino.”
30 Mas a mãe disse: “Tão certo como vive o Senhor e vive a tua alma, que não saio daqui enquanto não fores comigo.” Então Eliseu acompanhou-a.
31 Geazi partira à frente; chegando lá a casa, pôs o bordão sobre o rosto do menino. Contudo, nada aconteceu; não houve sinal de vida. Por isso, voltou. Encontrando-se com Eliseu, disse-lhe: “A criança ainda está morta.”
32 Quando Eliseu chegou, a criança estava efetivamente morta, deitada na cama do profeta. 33 O profeta entrou, fechou a porta atrás de si e orou ao Senhor. 34 Depois deitou-se sobre o corpo do menino, pondo a boca na dele, encostando os olhos aos dele e colando as mãos às da criança. O corpo do menino começou a aquecer de novo. 35 Então desceu e andou pela casa algum tempo; tornando a subir, estendeu-se novamente sobre a criança. Desta vez ela espirrou sete vezes e abriu os olhos.
36 O profeta chamou Geazi: “Diz à mãe que venha cá!” Quando ela apareceu, disse-lhe: “Aqui está o teu filho.” 37 Ela prostrou-se aos seus pés. Depois pegou no menino e desceu.
O caldo verde venenoso
38 Eliseu voltou para Gilgal, mas havia fome na terra. Estava um dia a ensinar os novos profetas, quando disse para Geazi: “Põe a panela grande ao lume e faz um caldo de verduras para estes comerem.”
39 Um dos rapazes foi ao campo apanhar alguns legumes e regressou com umas quantas plantas selvagens. Preparou-as, cortou-as e pô-las na panela, sem se dar conta de que não eram comestíveis. 40 Começando a comer, logo exclamaram: “Há veneno neste caldo!”
41 “Tragam-me farinha”, disse Eliseu. Lançou-a na panela e acrescentou: “Agora já não há perigo. Podem continuar a comer!” E nada de mal lhes aconteceu.
Alimentando cem homens
42 Um dia, um homem de Baal-Salisa trouxe ao homem de Deus, Eliseu, um saco de cereais frescos e vinte pães de cevada feitos das primeiras espigas da sua ceifa. Eliseu mandou a Geazi que com isso alimentasse os jovens profetas.
43 “O quê!”, exclamou ele. “Alimentar cem homens só com isto?” Mas Eliseu foi firme: “Dá-lhes isso a comer, porque o Senhor diz que haverá bastante para toda a gente e ainda há de sobejar!” 44 E na verdade, tal como o Senhor dissera, houve suficiente para todos e ainda sobejou.

Elijah and the Messengers of Ahaziah
1 Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab. 2 Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice in his upper room, which was in Samaria, and he was injured. So he sent messengers, and he said to them, “Go, inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, if I will survive this injury.”
3 Then the angel of Yahweh spoke to Elijah the Tishbite, “Get up, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and speak to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’ 4 Therefore, thus says Yahweh, ‘The bed upon which you have gone, you will not come down from it, but you shall surely die.’” So Elijah went.
5 When the messengers returned to him, he asked them, “Why have you returned?” 6 Then they said to him, “A man came up to meet us, and he said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you and speak to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub the god of Ekron? Therefore the bed upon which you have gone, you will not come down from it, for you will surely die.’”’” 7 Then he spoke to them, “What was the manner of the man who came up to meet you and spoke to you all these things?” 8 They answered him, “A hairy man[a] with a leather belt girded around his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
9 So Ahaziah[b] sent to him the commander of fifty with his fifty men, and he went up to him while he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’” 10 Then Elijah answered and said to the commander of the fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty!” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
11 So he again sent[c] another commander of fifty and his fifty men. He answered and said to him, “O man of God, thus says the king, ‘Come down quickly!’” 12 Then Elijah answered and said to them, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty!” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
13 So he again sent[d] a third time a commander of fifty and his fifty, and the commander of the third fifty went up and came and knelt down on his knees before Elijah and entreated him. He said to him, “O man of God, please let my life and the lives of your servants, these fifty, be precious in your eyes. 14 Behold, fire from heaven came down and consumed the first two commanders of fifty and their fifties, so then let my life be precious in your eyes.” 15 Then the angel of Yahweh spoke to Elijah, “Go down with him. Do not be afraid because of him.” So he got up and went down with him to the king, 16 and he said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel from whom to inquire his word?—therefore the bed upon which you went, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.’”
Epitaph for Ahaziah
17 So he died, according to the word of Yahweh which Elijah had spoken, and Joram became king in his place in the second year of Joram the son of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, because he had no son. 18 The remainder of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the scroll of the events of the days of the kings of Israel?
Elijah Taken Away from Elisha
2 When Yahweh was about to take Elijah up in the storm to heaven, Elijah and Elisha went from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for Yahweh has sent me up to Bethel.” Elisha said, “As Yahweh lives[e] and as your soul lives,[f] I will certainly not leave you!” So they went down to Bethel. 3 Then the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and they said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh is going to take your master from you[g] today?” He said, “I also know; be quiet!”
4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here because Yahweh has sent me to Jericho.” And he said, “As Yahweh lives[h] and as your soul lives,[i] I will certainly not leave you!” So they came to Jericho. 5 Then the sons of the prophets who were in Jericho came near to Elisha, and they said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh is going to take your master from you[j] today?” He said, “I also know; be quiet!”
6 Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, because Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.” He said, “As Yahweh lives[k] and as your soul lives,[l] I will certainly not leave you!” So the two of them went on. 7 Then fifty men from the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance while the two of them stood by the Jordan. 8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the water. It divided in two,[m] and the two of them crossed over on dry land.
9 After they crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I may do for you before I am taken away from you.” Then Elisha said, “Please let there come to me a double portion of your spirit.” 10 He said, “What you ask is difficult. If you see me being taken from you, it will be so for you, but if not, it will not happen.” 11 Then they were walking, talking as they went. Suddenly a fiery chariot with horses of fire appeared and separated between the two of them. Elijah went up in the storm to the heavens 12 while Elisha was watching and crying out, “My father, my father; the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” But he could not see him any longer, and he grasped his clothes and tore them in two pieces.
13 Then he picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen off of him, and he returned and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from upon him and struck the water. Then he said, “Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?” So he also struck the water, and it divided in two,[n] and Elisha crossed over.
Elisha Begins His Ministry
15 When the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him from the other side, they declared, “The spirit of Elijah rests upon Elisha,” and they came to meet him and bowed down to him to the ground. 16 Then they said to him, “Look, there are with your servants fifty able men. Please let them go and look for your master, lest the Spirit of Yahweh has lifted him up and thrown him on one of the mountains or into one of the valleys,” but he said, “You must not send them.” 17 But they urged him until embarrassing him, so he said, “Send them.” So they sent fifty men, and they looked for three days, but they could not find him. 18 Then they returned to him while he was staying in Jericho. He said to them, “Did I not tell you not to go?”
19 The men of the city said to Elisha, “Please now, the location of the city is good, as my master can see, but the water is bad and the land unproductive.” 20 So he said, “Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went out to the spring of waters and threw the salt into it there and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘I hereby purify these waters; let there be no longer any death or unproductiveness from it.’” 22 Then the waters were purified until this very day according to the word of Elisha that he spoke.
23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; as he was going up along the way, young boys came out from the city and mocked at him and said to him, “Go up, baldhead; go up, baldhead!” 24 When he turned around and saw them, he cursed them in the name of Yahweh. Then two bears came out of the forest and mauled forty-two boys among them. 25 Then he went from there to Mount Carmel and from there he returned to Samaria.
Joram Meets Moab in Battle
3 Now Joram the son of Ahab had become king over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. He reigned twelve years 2 and did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, yet not as his father or his mother, as he removed the stone pillars of Baal that his father had made. 3 But he did cling to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who caused Israel to sin, and he did not depart from it.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder, and he used to deliver to the king of Israel a hundred thousand male lambs and a hundred thousand wool rams. 5 It happened that when Ahab died, Mesha king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 So King Joram went out on that day from Samaria, and he mustered all of Israel. 7 He went and sent a message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab for the battle?” And he said, “I will go up. I am like you;[o] my people are like your people;[p] my horses are like your horses.”[q] 8 Then he said, “Which way shall we go up?” And he answered, “By way of the wilderness of Edom.”
9 So the king of Israel and the king of Judah and the king of Edom went around, a way of seven days, but there was no water for the army or for the animals which were with them.[r] 10 Then the king of Israel said, “Aha, Yahweh has called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 11 Then Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of Yahweh here that we might inquire guidance from Yahweh?” One of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.”[s] 12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word of Yahweh is with him.” So the king of Israel, Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What do we have in common?[t] Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother.” Then the king of Israel said to him, “No, for Yahweh has called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 14 Then Elisha said, “As Yahweh of hosts lives,[u] before whom I stand, surely if I was not regarding the face[v] of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would have not looked at you nor even glanced at you. 15 But now, bring me a musician.” It happened that at the moment the musician played, the hand of Yahweh came upon him. 16 He said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Make this wadi full of cisterns,’[w] 17 for thus says Yahweh, ‘You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this wadi will be full of water; and you and all of your livestock and your animals shall drink.’ 18 And since this is too trivial in the eyes of Yahweh, he will also give Moab into your hand, 19 and you shall defeat every fortified city, every choice city, and you shall fell every good tree. All of the springs of water you shall stop up, and every tract of good land you shall ruin with the stones.” 20 It happened in the morning about the time of the morning offering, that water was suddenly coming from the direction of Edom and the land was filled with water.
21 Now all of Moab had heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, and all who were fighting age and up[x] were called up, and they stood at the border. 22 When they arose early in the morning, the sun shone on the waters, and Moab saw the waters from the opposite side as red as blood. 23 Then they said, “This is blood! Certainly the kings have fought one another, and each has killed his neighbor. Now, to the war booty, O Moab!” 24 But when they came to the camp of Israel, Israel stood up and killed Moab, so that they fled from before them. They came at her and defeated Moab. 25 The cities they tore down, on every good tract of land they threw stones until it was filled up, every spring of water they stopped up, and every good tree they felled. They let the stone walls at Kir Hareseth remain, but the slingers surrounded and attacked it. 26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too heavy for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew the sword to break through to the king of Edom, but they were not able. 27 He took his firstborn son who was to become king in his place and offered him as a burnt offering on the wall. Great wrath came upon Israel, and they withdrew from him and returned to the land.
Elisha Answers a Widow’s Request
4 A certain woman from the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead. Now you know that your servant was a fearer of Yahweh, but the creditor came to take two of my children for himself as slaves. 2 Elisha asked her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” Then she said, “Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of olive oil.” 3 Then he said to her, “Go, ask for yourself some containers from the streets, from all your neighbors. You must collect as many empty containers as you can![y] 4 You must also go and shut the door behind you and your children, and you must pour out oil into all of these containers and set the filled ones aside.” 5 So she went from him, and she shut the door behind her and her children. They were bringing containers to her, and she kept pouring. 6 It happened that when the containers were full, she said to her son, “Bring near me another container,” but he said to her, “There is not another container.” Then the olive oil stopped flowing. 7 So she came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the olive oil and repay your debt. You and your sons can live on what is left over.”
Elisha at Shunem
8 It happened one day that Elisha passed through to Shunem where there was a wealthy woman, and she urged him to eat bread; so it happened each time he passed through, he would stop there to eat. 9 She said to her husband, “Please now, I know that he is a holy man of God who is passing our way[z] regularly; 10 let us make a small enclosed room upstairs and put a bed, table, chair, and lampstand there for him, so that when he comes to us, he can turn and stay there. 11 One day it happened that he came there and went to the upper room and lay down there. 12 He said to Gehazi his servant, “Call to this Shunammite,” so he called to her, and she stood before him. 13 He said to him, “Please say to her, ‘Look, you took all this trouble, showing care for us; what is there for me to do for you? To speak for you to the king or to the commander of the army?’” She said, “I am living among my people.” 14 Then he said, “What may be done for her?” Gehazi said, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.” 15 And he said, “Call for her,” so he called for her and she stood in the doorway. 16 And he said, “At this time next spring,[aa] you will be embracing a son.” She said, “No, my lord, O man of God! You must not tell a lie to your servant!” 17 But the woman conceived, and she bore a son in the spring,[ab] which Elisha had promised to her.
Elisha Restores the Shunammite’s Son
18 The child grew older, and it happened one day that he went out to his father and to the reapers. 19 Then he said to his father, “My head, my head!” So he said to the servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 So they carried him and brought him to his mother; he sat on her lap until noon and then died. 21 She went up, laid him on the bed of the man of God, closed the door, and went out behind it. 22 She called to her husband and said, “Please send one of the servants and one of the female donkeys for me, so that I can go quickly up to the man of God and return.” 23 And he said, “Why are you going to him today? It is neither the new moon nor the Sabbath!” And she said, “Peace.” 24 She saddled the female donkey, and she said to her servant, “Drive along and go; you must not hold me back from riding, unless I tell you.” 25 So she went and came to the man of God by Mount Carmel. It happened when the man of God saw her at a distance,[ac] he said to Gehazi his servant, “There is this Shunammite. 26 Now, please run to meet her and ask her, ‘Is it peace for you? Is it peace for your husband? Is it peace for the boy?’” She said, “Peace.” 27 So she came to the man of God at the mountain, and she caught hold of his feet. Then Gehazi came near to push her away, but the man of God said, “Let her alone, for her soul is bitter, and Yahweh has hidden it from me and has not told me.” 28 Then she said, “Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say that you must not mislead me?”
29 Then he said to Gehazi, “Gird up your loins and take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet anyone, you must not greet them; if anyone greets you, you must not answer them. You must put my staff on the face of the boy.” 30 Then the mother of the boy said, “As Yahweh lives[ad] and as your soul lives,[ae] I will surely not leave you.” So he got up and went after her. 31 Gehazi crossed over before them, and he put the staff on the face of the boy; but there was no sound, and there was no sign of life, so he returned to meet him. He told him, saying, “The boy did not wake up.”
32 When Elisha came to the house, here was the boy dead, lying on his bed. 33 He went and closed the door behind the two of them and prayed to Yahweh. 34 Then he went up and lay upon the child and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his palms on his palms. As he bent down over him, the flesh of the boy became warm. 35 He returned and went to and fro[af] in the house one time, then he went up and bent over him. Then the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. 36 Elisha called to Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite.” So he called her and she came to him; then he said, “Pick up your son.” 37 She came and fell at his feet and bowed down to the ground; then she picked up her son and went out.
Elisha Secures the Food
38 So Elisha returned to Gilgal. Now the famine was in the land, and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him. He said to his servant, put on the large pot and cook a stew for the sons of the prophets. 39 One went out to the field to gather herbs, and he found a wild vine[ag] and gathered wild gourds from it and filled his cloak. Then he came and cut them into the pot of stew, but they did not know what they were. 40 They served the men to eat, but when they ate from the stew, they cried out and said, “There is death in the pot, O man of God!” They were not able to eat it. 41 Then he said, “Bring some flour,” and he threw it into the pot. He then said, “Serve the people and let them eat.” There was nothing harmful in the pot.
42 A man came from Baal-Shalishah and brought food to the man of God: firstfruits and twenty loaves of barley bread, with ripe grain in his sack. He said, “Give it to the people and let them eat.” 43 Then his servant said, “How can I set this before a hundred men?” He said, “Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus Yahweh says, ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’” 44 So he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of Yahweh.
