Asa regerar i Juda
14 Kung Abia begravdes i Jerusalem. Hans son Asa blev sedan kung över Juda, och det var fred i landet under de tio första åren av hans regering,
2 för Asa var mycket noga med att lyda Herren, sin Gud.
3 Han rev ner de hedniska altaren som fanns på höjderna och bröt ner obelisken och högg ned aserorna.
4 Han befallde folket att söka Herren och att lyda de befallningar som Herren, deras förfäders Gud, hade gett dem.
5 Asa flyttade också bort rökelsealtarena från alla städer i Juda. Detta är anledningen till att Gud gav landet den fred
6 som gjorde det möjligt för Asa att bygga befästa städer över hela Juda.
7 Nu är rätta tiden att göra det, när Herren välsignar oss med fred därför att vi lyder honom, sa Asa till sitt folk. Låt oss bygga befästa städer med murar, torn, portar och bommar. De gjorde detta, och landet hade framgång.
8 Kung Asas armé bestod av 300.000 man från Juda, utrustade med stora sköldar och spjut. Benjaminiternas armé bestod av 280.000 man, beväpnade med små sköldar och bågar. Båda arméerna hade vältränade och djärva män.
9-10 Men Asa blev angripen av en jättelik etiopisk armé under general Sera. Han hade också 300 stridsvagnar. De ryckte fram mot staden Maresa i Sefatas dal, och kung Asa sände ut sina trupper för att hindra dem.
11 Herre, ingen annan än du kan hjälpa oss, ropade han till Gud. Här är vi nu, helt maktlösa mot denna väldiga armé. Hjälp oss, Herre, vår Gud! Bara du kan rädda oss, och i ditt namn ska vi gå till anfall mot denna väldiga armé. Herre, låt inte vanliga, enkla människor besegra dig!
12 Då slog Herren ner fienden, och Asa och hans armé stod som segrare.
13 De förföljde fienden ända till Gerar och dödade så många att de inte kunde återhämta sig. De blev helt tillintetgjorda inför Herren och hans styrkor. Juda armé förde med sig ett stort byte tillbaka.
14 Medan de var i Gerar anföll de alla städer i området, och invånarna där blev drabbade av Herrens vrede. De kunde föra med sig ett stort byte därifrån också.
15 Men de plundrade inte bara städerna utan angrep också herdarnas läger och tog stora hjordar med får och kameler, innan de slutligen vände tillbaka till Jerusalem.
Asa bygger upp altaret
15 Guds Ande kom över Asarja, Odeds son,
2 och han gick ut för att möta kung Asa när denne kom tillbaka från striden.Lyssna Asa! Lyssna Judas och Benjamins arméer! ropade han. Herren kommer att vara med er så länge ni är trogna mot honom! När ni söker honom ska ni finna honom, men om ni överger honom, så kommer han att överge er.
3 Under en lång tid har nu era bröder i Israel inte tillbett den sanne Guden och inte haft en enda riktig präst som har undervisat dem, och de har levt utan Guds lagar.
4 Men varje gång de har vänt om till Herren, Israels Gud, i sin svåra situation och sökt honom så har han hjälpt dem.
5 På den tiden då de gjorde uppror mot Gud fanns det ingen trygghet i landet.
6 De råkade i krig med andra folk, och dessutom var det inbördeskrig mellan deras egna städer, för Gud plågade dem med alla slags svårigheter.
7 Men ni, män av Juda, fortsätt på den goda vägen och tappa inte modet, för ni ska få er lön.
8 När kung Asa hörde detta budskap från Gud, tog han mod till sig och förstörde alla avgudar i hela Juda och Benjamin och i de städer som han hade intagit i Efraims bergsbygd, och han byggde på nytt upp Herrens altare framför templet.
9 Sedan sammankallade han allt folk i Juda och Benjamin och alla de från Efraim, Manasse och Simeon i Israel, som hade kommit över till Juda när de sett att Herren Gud var med kung Asa.
10 De samlades i Jerusalem på våren under kung Asas femtonde regeringsår,
11 och de offrade 700 tjurar och 7.000 får till Herren ur det byte de hade fört med sig från kriget.
12 Sedan ingick de ett avtal att de bara skulle tillbe Herren, sina förfäders Gud,
13 och bestämde att den som vägrade att göra detta skulle dö, vare sig det gällde gammal eller ung, man eller kvinna.
14 De bekände sig med hög röst till Herren, medan man blåste i trumpeter och basuner.
15 Alla jublade över detta förbund med Gud, som ingicks med stor övertygelse. De sökte honom framför allt annat, och de fann honom! Och han gav dem fred i hela landet.
16 Kung Asa till och med avsatte sin mor Maaka som drottningmoder, därför att hon hade gjort en aserapåle. Han högg ner den och brände upp den i Kidrons dal.
17 Han lyckades inte alldeles utrota avgudadyrkan, men han var helt överlåten till Gud under hela sin livstid.
18 Han hämtade tillbaka till templet de silver- och guldkärl som hans far hade invigt åt Herren.
19 Sedan blev det inte något mer krig förrän under kung Asas trettiofemte regeringsår.

14 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God:
3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
4 And commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the Lord had given him rest.
7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the Lord our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.
8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11 And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee.
12 So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the Lord came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
15 And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded:
2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.
3 Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.
4 But when they in their trouble did turn unto the Lord God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them.
5 And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
6 And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city: for God did vex them with all adversity.
7 Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
8 And when Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put away the abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim, and renewed the altar of the Lord, that was before the porch of the Lord.
9 And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh, and out of Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
10 So they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa.
11 And they offered unto the Lord the same time, of the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep.
12 And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul;
13 That whosoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.
14 And they sware unto the Lord with a loud voice, and with shouting, and with trumpets, and with cornets.
15 And all Judah rejoiced at the oath: for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the Lord gave them rest round about.
16 And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.
17 But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.
18 And he brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated, and that he himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels.
19 And there was no more war unto the five and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa.

14 [a]And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. Asa his son succeeded him as king, and in his days the country was at peace for ten years.
Asa King of Judah(A)
2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.(B) 3 He removed the foreign altars(C) and the high places, smashed the sacred stones(D) and cut down the Asherah poles.[b](E) 4 He commanded Judah to seek the Lord,(F) the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. 5 He removed the high places(G) and incense altars(H) in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 6 He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the Lord gave him rest.(I)
7 “Let us build up these towns,” he said to Judah, “and put walls around them, with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the Lord our God; we sought him and he has given us rest(J) on every side.” So they built and prospered.
8 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand(K) men from Judah, equipped with large shields and with spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, armed with small shields and with bows. All these were brave fighting men.
9 Zerah the Cushite(L) marched out against them with an army of thousands upon thousands and three hundred chariots, and came as far as Mareshah.(M) 10 Asa went out to meet him, and they took up battle positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.
11 Then Asa called(N) to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us,(O) Lord our God, for we rely(P) on you, and in your name(Q) we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail(R) against you.”
12 The Lord struck down(S) the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled, 13 and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar.(T) Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed(U) before the Lord and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder.(V) 14 They destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for the terror(W) of the Lord had fallen on them. They looted all these villages, since there was much plunder there. 15 They also attacked the camps of the herders and carried off droves of sheep and goats and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
Asa’s Reform(X)
15 The Spirit of God came on(Y) Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you(Z) when you are with him.(AA) If you seek(AB) him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.(AC) 3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach(AD) and without the law.(AE) 4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him,(AF) and he was found by them. 5 In those days it was not safe to travel about,(AG) for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. 6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another,(AH) because God was troubling them with every kind of distress. 7 But as for you, be strong(AI) and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”(AJ)
8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of[c] Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols(AK) from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured(AL) in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar(AM) of the Lord that was in front of the portico of the Lord’s temple.
9 Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers(AN) had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
10 They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month(AO) of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign. 11 At that time they sacrificed to the Lord seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder(AP) they had brought back. 12 They entered into a covenant(AQ) to seek the Lord,(AR) the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. 13 All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death,(AS) whether small or great, man or woman. 14 They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. 15 All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God(AT) eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest(AU) on every side.
16 King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maakah(AV) from her position as queen mother,(AW) because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah.(AX) Asa cut it down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley.(AY) 17 Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 18 He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.(AZ)
19 There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign.
