3 La guerre dura longtemps entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David. David devenait de plus en plus fort, et la maison de Saül allait en s'affaiblissant.
2 Il naquit à David des fils à Hébron. Son premier-né fut Amnon, d'Achinoam de Jizreel;
3 le second, Kileab, d'Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal; le troisième, Absalom, fils de Maaca, fille de Talmaï, roi de Gueschur;
4 le quatrième, Adonija, fils de Haggith; le cinquième, Schephathia, fils d'Abithal;
5 et le sixième, Jithream, d'Égla, femme de David. Ce sont là ceux qui naquirent à David à Hébron.
6 Pendant la guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner tint ferme pour la maison de Saül.
7 Or Saül avait eu une concubine, nommée Ritspa, fille d'Ajja. Et Isch Boscheth dit à Abner: Pourquoi es-tu venu vers la concubine de mon père?
8 Abner fut très irrité des paroles d'Isch Boscheth, et il répondit: Suis-je une tête de chien, qui tienne pour Juda? Je fais aujourd'hui preuve de bienveillance envers la maison de Saül, ton père, envers ses frères et ses amis, je ne t'ai pas livré entre les mains de David, et c'est aujourd'hui que tu me reproches une faute avec cette femme?
9 Que Dieu traite Abner dans toute sa rigueur, si je n'agis pas avec David selon ce que l'Éternel a juré à David,
10 en disant qu'il ferait passer la royauté de la maison de Saül dans la sienne, et qu'il établirait le trône de David sur Israël et sur Juda depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer Schéba.
11 Isch Boscheth n'osa pas répliquer un seul mot à Abner, parce qu'il le craignait.
12 Abner envoya des messagers à David pour lui dire de sa part: A qui est le pays? Fais alliance avec moi, et voici, ma main t'aidera pour tourner vers toi tout Israël.
13 Il répondit: Bien! je ferai alliance avec toi; mais je te demande une chose, c'est que tu ne voies point ma face, à moins que tu n'amènes d'abord Mical, fille de Saül, en venant auprès de moi.
14 Et David envoya des messagers à Isch Boscheth, fils de Saül, pour lui dire: Donne-moi ma femme Mical, que j'ai fiancée pour cent prépuces de Philistins.
15 Isch Boscheth la fit prendre chez son mari Palthiel, fils de Laïsch.
16 Et son mari la suivit en pleurant jusqu'à Bachurim. Alors Abner lui dit: Va, retourne-t'en! Et il s'en retourna.
17 Abner eut un entretien avec les anciens d'Israël, et leur dit: Vous désiriez autrefois d'avoir David pour roi;
18 établissez-le maintenant, car l'Éternel a dit de lui: C'est par David, mon serviteur, que je délivrerai mon peuple d'Israël de la main des Philistins et de la main de tous ses ennemis.
19 Abner parla aussi à Benjamin, et il alla rapporter aux oreilles de David à Hébron ce qu'avaient résolu Israël et toute la maison de Benjamin.
20 Il arriva auprès de David à Hébron, accompagné de vingt hommes; et David fit un festin à Abner et à ceux qui étaient avec lui.
21 Abner dit à David: Je me lèverai, et je partirai pour rassembler tout Israël vers mon seigneur le roi; ils feront alliance avec toi, et tu règneras entièrement selon ton désir. David renvoya Abner, qui s'en alla en paix.
22 Voici, Joab et les gens de David revinrent d'une excursion, et amenèrent avec eux un grand butin. Abner n'était plus auprès de David à Hébron, car David l'avait renvoyé, et il s'en était allé en paix.
23 Lorsque Joab et toute sa troupe arrivèrent, on fit à Joab ce rapport: Abner, fils de Ner, est venu auprès du roi, qui l'a renvoyé, et il s'en est allé en paix.
24 Joab se rendit chez le roi, et dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Voici, Abner est venu vers toi; pourquoi l'as-tu renvoyé et laissé partir?
25 Tu connais Abner, fils de Ner! c'est pour te tromper qu'il est venu, pour épier tes démarches, et pour savoir tout ce que tu fais.
26 Et Joab, après avoir quitté David, envoya sur les traces d'Abner des messagers, qui le ramenèrent depuis la citerne de Sira: David n'en savait rien.
27 Lorsque Abner fut de retour à Hébron, Joab le tira à l'écart au milieu de la porte, comme pour lui parler en secret, et là il le frappa au ventre et le tua, pour venger la mort d'Asaël, son frère.
28 David l'apprit ensuite, et il dit: Je suis à jamais innocent, devant l'Éternel, du sang d'Abner, fils de Ner, et mon royaume l'est aussi.
29 Que ce sang retombe sur Joab et sur toute la maison de son père! Qu'il y ait toujours quelqu'un dans la maison de Joab, qui soit atteint d'un flux ou de la lèpre, ou qui s'appuie sur un bâton, ou qui tombe par l'épée, ou qui manque de pain!
30 Ainsi Joab et Abischaï, son frère, tuèrent Abner, parce qu'il avait donné la mort à Asaël, leur frère, à Gabaon, dans la bataille.
31 David dit à Joab et à tout le peuple qui était avec lui: Déchirez vos vêtements, ceignez-vous de sacs, et pleurez devant Abner! Et le roi David marcha derrière le cercueil.
32 On enterra Abner à Hébron. Le roi éleva la voix et pleura sur le sépulcre d'Abner, et tout le peuple pleura.
33 Le roi fit une complainte sur Abner, et dit: Abner devait-il mourir comme meurt un criminel?
34 Tu n'avais ni les mains liées, ni les pieds dans les chaînes! Tu es tombé comme on tombe devant des méchants.
35 Et tout le peuple pleura de nouveau sur Abner. Tout le peuple s'approcha de David pour lui faire prendre quelque nourriture, pendant qu'il était encore jour; mais David jura, en disant: Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si je goûte du pain ou quoi que ce soit avant le coucher du soleil!
36 Cela fut connu et approuvé de tout le peuple, qui trouva bon tout ce qu'avait fait le roi.
37 Tout le peuple et tout Israël comprirent en ce jour que ce n'était pas par ordre du roi qu'Abner, fils de Ner, avait été tué.
38 Le roi dit à ses serviteurs: Ne savez-vous pas qu'un chef, qu'un grand homme, est tombé aujourd'hui en Israël?
39 Je suis encore faible, quoique j'aie reçu l'onction royale; et ces gens, les fils de Tseruja, sont trop puissants pour moi. Que l'Éternel rende selon sa méchanceté à celui qui fait le mal!

3 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time.(A) David grew stronger and stronger,(B) while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.(C)
2 Sons were born to David in Hebron:
His firstborn was Amnon(D) the son of Ahinoam(E) of Jezreel;
3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail(F) the widow of Nabal of Carmel;
the third, Absalom(G) the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;(H)
4 the fourth, Adonijah(I) the son of Haggith;
the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David’s wife Eglah.
These were born to David in Hebron.
Abner Goes Over to David
6 During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner(J) had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul. 7 Now Saul had had a concubine(K) named Rizpah(L) daughter of Aiah. And Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?”
8 Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, “Am I a dog’s head(M)—on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offense involving this woman! 9 May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised(N) him on oath 10 and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.”(O) 11 Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.”
13 “Good,” said David. “I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.”(P) 14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, “Give me my wife Michal,(Q) whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.”
15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband(R) Paltiel(S) son of Laish. 16 Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim.(T) Then Abner said to him, “Go back home!” So he went back.
17 Abner conferred with the elders(U) of Israel and said, “For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18 Now do it! For the Lord promised David, ‘By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines(V) and from the hand of all their enemies.(W)’”
19 Abner also spoke to the Benjamites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin(X) wanted to do. 20 When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast(Y) for him and his men. 21 Then Abner said to David, “Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant(Z) with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.”(AA) So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab Murders Abner
22 Just then David’s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace.
24 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing.”
26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner(AB) returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him(AC) in the stomach, and he died.(AD)
28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent(AE) before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood(AF) fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family!(AG) May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore(AH) or leprosy[a] or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.”
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)
31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth(AI) and walk in mourning(AJ) in front of Abner.” King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept(AK) aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept also.
33 The king sang this lament(AL) for Abner:
“Should Abner have died as the lawless die?
34 Your hands were not bound,
your feet were not fettered.(AM)
You fell as one falls before the wicked.”
And all the people wept over him again.
35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AN) if I taste bread(AO) or anything else before the sun sets!”
36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part(AP) in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
38 Then the king said to his men, “Do you not realize that a commander and a great man has fallen(AQ) in Israel this day? 39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah(AR) are too strong(AS) for me.(AT) May the Lord repay(AU) the evildoer according to his evil deeds!”

Joab Kills Abner
3 Now there was a long (A)war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

Abner Joins Forces with David

7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was (G)Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you (H)gone in to my father’s concubine?”
8 Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I (I)a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman? 9 (J)May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David (K)as the Lord has sworn to him— 10 to transfer the kingdom from the [b]house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, (L)from Dan to Beersheba.” 11 And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”
13 And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: (M)you shall not see my face unless you first bring (N)Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” 14 So David sent messengers to (O)Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself (P)for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” 15 And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from [c]Paltiel the son of Laish. 16 Then her husband went along with her to (Q)Bahurim, [d]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.
17 Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you. 18 Now then, do it! (R)For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, [e]I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ” 19 And Abner also spoke in the hearing of (S)Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.
20 So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him. 21 Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and (T)gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may (U)reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab Murders Abner
22 At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much [f]spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.” 24 Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone? 25 Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know (V)your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”
26 And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab (W)took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there [g]stabbed him (X)in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of (Y)Asahel his brother.
28 Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are [h]guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner. 29 (Z)Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the [i]house of Joab one (AA)who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.” 30 So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother (AB)Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
David’s Mourning for Abner
31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, (AC)“Tear your clothes, (AD)gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin. 32 So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept. 33 And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a (AE)fool dies?
34 Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.
35 And when all the people came (AF)to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, (AG)“God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else (AH)till the sun goes down!” 36 Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people. 37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner. 38 Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? 39 And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, (AI)are too harsh for me. (AJ)The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”

3 これが、サウル家とダビデ家との長い戦いの始まりでした。ダビデがますます権力を増していくのに反して、サウル王家は衰えていきました。
2 ダビデには、ヘブロンでの生活の間に何人もの息子が生まれました。長男のアムノンは、妻アヒノアムから生まれました。 3 次男のキルアブは、カルメル人ナバルの未亡人だったアビガイルから生まれました。三男アブシャロムの母親は、ゲシュルの王タルマイの娘マアカでした。 4 四男アドニヤはハギテから、五男シェファテヤはアビタルから、 5 六男のイテレアムはエグラから生まれました。
ダビデの側についたアブネル
6 内戦が続く中、アブネルはサウル家で押しも押されもせぬ政治的指導者にのし上がっていきました。 7 その地位を利用して、サウル王のそばめの一人だったリツパという娘と関係をもつようになりました。そのことでサウルの子イシュ・ボシェテから責められると、 8 アブネルはひどく腹を立て、言いました。「私は、たかがこれくらいのことで文句を言われなければならないユダの犬なのか。だれのおかげで、ダビデに売り渡されずにすんだのか。あなたのため、お父上サウル王のため、この私がどれほど尽くしてきたか。それなのに、あの女のことで難くせをつけて、恩を仇で返されるとは。 9-10 覚えておくのだ。主のお告げどおり、ダンからベエル・シェバに至る全王国をあなたから取り上げて、ダビデに渡す。もしできなかったら、この首を差し出そう。」
11 イシュ・ボシェテはもはやことばを返せませんでした。アブネルを恐れたのです。
12 アブネルはダビデに使者を立て、一つの申し入れをしました。全イスラエルを引き渡すのと交換に、自分をイスラエルとユダの連合軍の司令官にしてほしいというのです。 13 ダビデは答えました。「よいだろう。ただし、私の妻である、サウルの娘ミカルを連れて来てくれ。それが条件だ。」 14 それからダビデは使者を立て、イシュ・ボシェテに伝えました。「私の妻ミカルを返してほしい。ペリシテ人百人のいのちと引き替えにめとった妻だから。」
15 それでイシュ・ボシェテは、ミカルをその夫、ライシュの子パルティエルから取り上げました。 16 パルティエルはバフリムまで泣き泣きあとを追って来たものの、アブネルに「もう帰れ」と言われて、すごすごと引き返して行きました。
17 その間、アブネルはイスラエルの指導者たちと協議し、彼らが長年ダビデの支配を望んでいたことを確かめました。 18 「今こそ、時がきたのだ！ 主が、『わたしはダビデによって、わたしの民をペリシテ人から、また、すべての敵から救い出そう』とおっしゃったではないか」と、アブネルは言いました。
19 アブネルはまた、ベニヤミン族の指導者たちとも話し合いました。それからヘブロンへ行き、イスラエルおよびベニヤミンの人々との交渉の経過を、ダビデに報告したのです。 20 二十人の部下を伴ったアブネルを、ダビデは祝宴を張ってもてなしました。 21 アブネルはダビデのもとを辞する時、こう約束しました。「帰りしだい、全イスラエルを召集します。多年のお望みがかないます。全国民はきっと、あなた様を王に選ぶでしょうから。」こうしてダビデはアブネルを送り出し、アブネルは安心して出て行きました。
アブネル暗殺
22 ちょうど入れ違いに、ダビデの兵士たちとヨアブが、戦利品をどっさりかかえて奇襲攻撃から戻って来ました。 23 ダビデのもとを訪れたアブネルとの話し合いが、極めて友好的だったと聞くと、 24-25 ヨアブは王のもとへ飛んで行きました。「あんまりではございませんか。アブネルをむざむざお帰しになるなど、もってのほかです。あの男の魂胆はご存じでしょう。われわれを攻めるために、動静を探りに来たに違いありません。」
26 ヨアブは直ちにアブネルを追わせ、連れ戻すようにと命じました。追っ手はシラの井戸あたりで追いつき、いっしょに引き返しました。しかし、ダビデはこのことを知りませんでした。 27 ヘブロンに着いたアブネルを、ヨアブは個人的な話があるように見せかけて、町の門のそばへ呼び出しました。そして、ヨアブはやにわに短剣を抜いてアブネルを刺し殺し、弟アサエルの復讐をしたのです。 28 この一件を知らされたダビデは言いました。「私は神にかけて誓う。私も民も、このアブネル殺しの罪には全く関与していない。 29 その責任は、ヨアブとその一族に降りかかるのだ。ヨアブの家は子々孫々、汚れた者、不妊の者、飢え死にする者、剣に倒れる者が絶えないだろう。」
30 ヨアブとその兄弟アビシャイがアブネルを殺したのは、ギブオンの戦いで殺された弟アサエルのかたきを討つためでした。
31 ダビデは、ヨアブおよび彼とともにいた全員に告げて言いました。「アブネルのために嘆き悲しみ、喪に服すのだ。」ダビデは墓地まで棺につき添い、 32 アブネルをヘブロンに葬りました。王も民もみな、墓のそばで声を上げて泣きました。 33-34 「アブネル、どうして愚かな死に方をしたのだ」とダビデは嘆き、歌いました。
「おまえの手は縛られず、

民もまた、アブネルを悼んで泣きました。
35-36 弔いの日、ダビデは食事を少しでも口にするように勧められましたが、日没まで食を断つと誓って聞きませんでした。こればかりでなく、ダビデのすることなすことはすべて、人々を満足させました。 37 ダビデの行いをつぶさに見たユダとイスラエルの全国民は、それによってアブネルの死の責任がダビデにないことを認めたのです。
38 ダビデは家来たちに言いました。「今日、イスラエルで一人の偉大な指導者、偉大な人物が倒れた。 39 私は神に選ばれた王だが、ツェルヤのこの二人の息子に何もできない。どうか主が、このような悪を行った者に報いられるように。」

Joab en Abner
3 Deze strijd vormde het begin van een langdurige oorlog tussen de volgelingen van Saul en David. Davids positie werd steeds sterker, terwijl die van de nakomelingen van Saul steeds zwakker werd. 2 David kreeg in Hebron diverse zonen. De oudste was Amnon, ter wereld gebracht door Ahinoam. 3 Abigaïl was de moeder van zijn tweede zoon, Kileab. De derde zoon was Absalom van zijn vrouw Maächa, de dochter van koning Talmai van Gesur. 4 Haggith bracht de vierde zoon, Adonia, ter wereld en daarna baarde Abital de vijfde zoon Sefatja. 5 Jithream was de zesde en zijn moeder heette Egla.
6 Terwijl de oorlog voortduurde, werd Abner steeds invloedrijker onder de volgelingen van Saul. 7 Hij misbruikte zijn positie om met Rizpa, een van Sauls bijvrouwen, te slapen. Toen Isboseth hem hiervoor ter verantwoording riep, 8 was Abner woedend. ‘Ben ik soms een Judese hond, dat ik zo word behandeld?’ schreeuwde hij. ‘Is dit mijn beloning na alles wat ik voor uw vader en u heb gedaan, door u niet aan David te verraden: mij lastigvallen over de één of andere vrouw? 9,10 God mag mij vervloeken als ik niet alles zal doen om uw hele koninkrijk, van Dan tot Berseba, van u af te nemen en aan David te geven, precies zoals de Here het hem heeft gezworen.’ 11 Isboseth durfde niets terug te zeggen, omdat hij bang was voor Abner.
12 Daarna stuurde Abner boodschappers naar David: ‘Sluit een overeenkomst met mij, dan zal ik alles doen om te zorgen dat u heel Israël in bezit krijgt.’ 13 ‘Goed,’ zei David, ‘maar er komt geen overeenkomst voordat u mijn vrouw Michal hebt teruggebracht.’ 14 Daarna stuurde David dezelfde boodschap naar Isboseth: ‘Geef mij mijn vrouw Michal terug, want ik heb haar gekocht met de voorhuiden van honderd Filistijnen.’ 15 Daarom haalde Isboseth haar weg bij haar man Palti. 16 Deze volgde Michal tot Bahurim terwijl hij huilde van verdriet. Toen zei Abner tegen hem: ‘U kunt nu beter naar huis gaan.’ Dat deed hij toen.
17 Intussen overlegde Abner met de leiders van Israël en hij herinnerde hen eraan dat zij David al een lange tijd als koning wilden hebben. 18 ‘Daarvoor bestaat nu de kans,’ zei hij tegen hen. ‘Want de Here heeft gezegd: “Door David zal Ik mijn volk van de Filistijnen en al hun andere vijanden redden.” ’
19 Abner sprak ook met de leiders van de stam Benjamin, waarna hij in Hebron David verslag deed over de vooruitgang die hij had geboekt in de besprekingen. 20 Twintig mannen vergezelden hem en David bood hun een feestelijke maaltijd aan. 21 Bij zijn vertrek beloofde Abner David: ‘Ik ga op weg om alle Israëlieten voor u bijeen te roepen, dan zullen zij een verdrag met u sluiten en zult u koning over heel Israël worden, zoals u al zolang hebt gewild.’ Daarop liet David Abner ongehinderd vertrekken.
22 Maar toen Abner net was vertrokken, keerde Joab met een deel van Davids troepen terug van een strooptocht die hun veel buit had opgeleverd. 23 Toen Joab hoorde dat Abner kort tevoren de koning had bezocht en ongehinderd weer was vertrokken, 24,25 spoedde hij zich naar de koning en vroeg hem boos: ‘Wat hebt u nu gedaan? Waarom hebt u Abner zomaar weg laten gaan? U weet heel goed dat hij hier kwam spioneren.’ 26 Joab stuurde daarop boodschappers achter Abner aan om hem te zeggen dat hij moest terugkomen. Zij haalden hem in bij de bron Sira en hij ging met hen mee terug. David wist hier echter niets van. 27 Toen Abner bij Hebron aankwam, nam Joab hem bij de stadspoort terzijde alsof hij hem onder vier ogen wilde spreken. Hij stak hem echter in zijn buik en doodde hem uit wraak voor de dood van zijn broer Asaël.
28 Toen David dit hoorde, verklaarde hij: ‘Ik zweer bij de Here dat ik en mijn koninkrijk onschuldig zijn aan deze misdaad tegen Abner. 29 Joab en zijn familie zijn de schuldigen. Laat er in Joabs familie altijd iemand zijn die een geslachtsziekte of de schurft heeft, iemand die met krukken loopt, een gewelddadige dood sterft of honger lijdt.’ 30 Zo doodden Joab en zijn broer Abisaï Abner om wraak te nemen voor de dood van hun broer Asaël in de slag bij Gibeon.
31 David zei tegen Joab en allen die bij hem waren: ‘Scheur uw kleren en kleedt u in zakken, we moeten rouwen om Abner.’ En koning David liep achter de baar naar de begraafplaats. 32 Zij begroeven Abner in Hebron. De koning en alle aanwezigen huilden toen zij bij het graf stonden. 33,34 ‘Als een goddeloze kwam Abner aan zijn einde,’ klaagde de koning. ‘Uw handen waren niet vastgebonden, uw voeten waren niet geboeid. U werd vermoord als slachtoffer van een gemene samenzwering.’ En opnieuw huilden alle aanwezigen om hem. 35,36 De hele dag van de begrafenis at David niets en iedereen smeekte hem toch iets te eten. Maar David zwoer dat hij niets zou eten tot de zon was ondergegaan. Deze houding van de koning sprak zijn onderdanen erg aan, zij hadden bewondering voor alles wat hij deed! 37 Zo werd het voor het hele volk, zowel Israël als Juda, duidelijk dat David op geen enkele manier verantwoordelijk was voor Abners dood. 38,39 David zei tegen zijn naaste dienaren: ‘Besef wel dat Israël vandaag een groot leider heeft verloren. Ik voel me nu niet geroepen om Joab en Abisaï aan te pakken omdat ik nog maar net koning ben. Moge de Here hun misdaden vergelden.’
