David’s Last Words
23 These are the last words of David:
“The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse,
the utterance of the man exalted(A) by the Most High,
the man anointed(B) by the God of Jacob,
the hero of Israel’s songs:
2 “The Spirit(C) of the Lord spoke through me;
his word was on my tongue.
3 The God of Israel spoke,
the Rock(D) of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,(E)
when he rules in the fear(F) of God,(G)
4 he is like the light(H) of morning(I) at sunrise(J)
on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain(K)
that brings grass from the earth.’
5 “If my house were not right with God,
surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,(L)
arranged and secured in every part;
surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation
and grant me my every desire.
6 But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,(M)
which are not gathered with the hand.
7 Whoever touches thorns
uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
they are burned up where they lie.”
David’s Mighty Warriors(N)
8 These are the names of David’s mighty warriors:(O)
Josheb-Basshebeth,[a](P) a Tahkemonite,[b] was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed[c] in one encounter.
9 Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai(Q) the Ahohite.(R) As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim[d] for battle. Then the Israelites retreated, 10 but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.
11 Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. 12 But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.
13 During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam,(S) while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.(T) 14 At that time David was in the stronghold,(U) and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.(V) 15 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 16 So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured(W) it out before the Lord. 17 “Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood(X) of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.
Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.
18 Abishai(Y) the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three.[e] He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 19 Was he not held in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
20 Benaiah(Z) son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel,(AA) performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21 And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 23 He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
24 Among the Thirty were:
Asahel(AB) the brother of Joab,
Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,
25 Shammah the Harodite,(AC)
Elika the Harodite,
26 Helez(AD) the Paltite,
Ira(AE) son of Ikkesh from Tekoa,
27 Abiezer(AF) from Anathoth,(AG)
Sibbekai[f] the Hushathite,
28 Zalmon the Ahohite,
Maharai(AH) the Netophathite,(AI)
29 Heled[g](AJ) son of Baanah the Netophathite,
Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah(AK) in Benjamin,
30 Benaiah the Pirathonite,(AL)
Hiddai[h] from the ravines of Gaash,(AM)
31 Abi-Albon the Arbathite,
Azmaveth the Barhumite,(AN)
32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite,
the sons of Jashen,
Jonathan 33 son of[i] Shammah the Hararite,
Ahiam son of Sharar[j] the Hararite,
34 Eliphelet son of Ahasbai the Maakathite,(AO)
Eliam(AP) son of Ahithophel(AQ) the Gilonite,

The Last Words of David
23 Now these are the last words of David:
The oracle of David, the son of Jesse,
the oracle of (A)the man who was raised on high,
(B)the anointed of the God of Jacob,
the sweet psalmist of Israel:[a]
2 (C)“The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me;
his word is on my tongue.
3 The God of Israel has spoken;
(D)the Rock of Israel has said to me:
When one rules justly over men,
ruling (E)in the fear of God,
4 he (F)dawns on them like the morning light,
like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,
like rain[b] that makes grass to sprout from the earth.
5 “For does not my house stand so with God?
(G)For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
ordered in all things and secure.
For will he not cause to prosper
all my help and my desire?
6 But worthless men[c] are all like thorns that are thrown away,
for they cannot be taken with the hand;
7 but the man who touches them
arms himself with iron and the shaft of a spear,
and they are utterly consumed with fire.”[d]
David's Mighty Men
8 (H)These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: (I)Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three.[e] He wielded his spear[f] against eight hundred whom he killed at one time.
9 And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of (J)Dodo, son of (K)Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew. 10 He rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clung to the sword. And the Lord brought about a great victory that day, and the men returned after him only to strip the slain.
11 And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee the (L)Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi,[g] where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the men fled from the Philistines. 12 But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory.
13 And three of the thirty chief men went down and came about harvest time to David at the (M)cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped (N)in the Valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then (O)in the stronghold, and (P)the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. 15 And David said longingly, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” 16 Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it. He poured it out to the Lord 17 and said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink (Q)the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.
18 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty.[h] And he wielded his spear against three hundred men[i] and killed them and won a name beside the three. 19 He was the most renowned of the thirty[j] and became their commander, but he did not attain to (R)the three.
20 And (S)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man[k] of (T)Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two ariels[l] of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. 21 And he struck down an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men. 23 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard.

5 Gia đình tôi dù không được ngay lành trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời,
Dù vậy Ngài đã lập với tôi một giao ước đời đời;
Mọi sự đã được Ngài an bài và làm cho ổn định.

Ngài sẽ chẳng làm cho điều ấy cứ tăng lên sao?
6 Nhưng quân phản bội sẽ như những nhánh gai bị vứt bỏ,
Vì không ai có thể dùng tay trần nắm chúng được;

Ba Dũng Sĩ Hàng Ðầu
8 Ðây là tên các dũng sĩ của Ða-vít: Giô-sép Ba-sê-bết người Ta-kê-mô-ni. Ông chỉ huy Ba Dũng Sĩ. Chính ông là người đã dùng cây giáo đánh hạ tám trăm quân thù trong một trận đánh.
9 Sau ông có Ê-lê-a-xa con trai của Ðô-đô[a] người A-hô-hi. Ông là một trong ba dũng sĩ. Có lần ông đi với Ða-vít đến nơi quân Phi-li-tin tụ lại dàn trận để giao tranh. Quân I-sơ-ra-ên đã rút lui, 10 nhưng ông cứ ở lại mà đánh quân Phi-li-tin cho đến khi cánh tay ông đuối sức, và bàn tay ông dính chặt vào cán gươm. Ngày hôm đó Chúa đã ban cho họ một chiến thắng lớn. Quân I-sơ-ra-ên quay trở lại, nhưng chỉ để thu lượm chiến lợi phẩm.
11 Kế sau ông là Sam-ma con của A-ghi, người Ha-ra-ri. Dân Phi-li-tin tập họp với nhau thành một đạo quân trong một cánh đồng trồng đậu. Quân I-sơ-ra-ên bỏ chạy trước mặt quân Phi-li-tin, 12 nhưng một mình ông cứ đứng trụ ngay giữa cánh đồng mà chống cự và đánh giết quân Phi-li-tin. Nhờ thế Chúa đã ban cho họ một chiến thắng lớn.
Ba Dũng Sĩ Ðặc Biệt
13 Vào đầu một mùa gặt kia, ba người trong Nhóm Ba Mươi Dũng Sĩ đi xuống gặp Ða-vít ở hang A-đu-lam, giữa lúc quân Phi-li-tin đang hạ trại trong thung lũng ở Rê-pha-im. 14 Ða-vít đang ở trong chiến lũy, còn quân Phi-li-tin thì đóng đồn ngay tại Bết-lê-hem. 15 Bấy giờ Ða-vít ước ao và nói, “Ôi, ước gì có ai cho tôi uống nước giếng ở cổng thành Bết-lê-hem!” 16 Ba dũng sĩ ấy bèn xông qua trại của quân Phi-li-tin, đến giếng nơi cổng thành Bết-lê-hem, lấy nước, và đem về cho Ða-vít. Tuy nhiên Ða-vít không uống nước ấy, nhưng đổ nó ra, dâng lên Chúa, 17 và nói, “Lạy Chúa, xin đừng để con làm điều nầy nữa. Ðây há chẳng phải là máu của những người đã liều mạng đi lấy nó về sao?” Vì thế Ða-vít không uống nước ấy. Ðó là việc ba dũng sĩ ấy đã làm.
Các Dũng Sĩ Khác
18 A-bi-sai em Giô-áp, con của bà Xê-ru-gia, chỉ huy Nhóm Ba Mươi[b] Dũng Sĩ. Ông lấy cây giáo của ông đánh ba trăm quân thù và giết chết chúng. Vì thế danh ông được liệt vào hàng của Ba Mươi[c] Dũng Sĩ hàng đầu. 19 Ông há không đáng được tôn trọng nhất trong Nhóm Ba Mươi dũng sĩ sao? Vì thế ông đã được đặt làm người chỉ huy của họ. Tuy nhiên ông không được vào nhóm ba dũng sĩ kia.
20 Bê-na-gia con trai của Giê-hô-gia-đa là một người dũng mãnh quê ở Cáp-xê-ên. Ông được nổi tiếng vì có nhiều thành tích. Ông đã đánh hạ hai tay anh hùng dữ tợn như sư tử của dân Mô-áp. Ngoài ra một ngày tuyết rơi nọ, ông đi xuống hố lấy nước, không ngờ tại đó đã có một con sư tử. Nó nhảy đến vồ ông, nhưng ông đã đánh nó chết. 21 Ông cũng đánh hạ một tên Ai-cập có tướng mạo to lớn dị thường. Tên Ai-cập ấy cầm cây giáo trong tay, còn ông chỉ có một cây gậy. Ông giật lấy cây giáo khỏi tay tên Ai-cập, rồi dùng cây giáo ấy giết hắn. 22 Ðó là các thành tích mà Bê-na-gia con trai Giê-hô-gia-đa đã làm, nên danh ông không kém gì ba dũng sĩ kia. 23 Trong nhóm Ba Mươi Dũng Sĩ, ông được tôn trọng hơn nhiều người, nhưng không bằng ba dũng sĩ hàng đầu. Ða-vít đặt ông chỉ huy các cận vệ của mình.
