The Ammonites and Arameans Are Defeated
10 Some time afterwards the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him. 2 David said, ‘I will deal loyally with Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father dealt loyally with me.’ So David sent envoys to console him concerning his father. When David’s envoys came into the land of the Ammonites, 3 the princes of the Ammonites said to their lord Hanun, ‘Do you really think that David is honouring your father just because he has sent messengers with condolences to you? Has not David sent his envoys to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?’ 4 So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half the beard of each, cut off their garments in the middle at their hips, and sent them away. 5 When David was told, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, ‘Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.’
6 When the Ammonites saw that they had become odious to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Arameans of Beth-rehob and the Arameans of Zobah, twenty thousand foot-soldiers, as well as the king of Maacah, one thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men. 7 When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army with the warriors. 8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate; but the Arameans of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the open country.
9 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the picked men of Israel, and arrayed them against the Arameans; 10 the rest of his men he put in charge of his brother Abishai, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites. 11 He said, ‘If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12 Be strong, and let us be courageous for the sake of our people, and for the cities of our God; and may the Lord do what seems good to him.’ 13 So Joab and the people who were with him moved forward into battle against the Arameans; and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites, and came to Jerusalem.
15 But when the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 Hadadezer sent and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17 When it was told to David, he gathered all Israel together, and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Arameans arrayed themselves against David and fought with him. 18 The Arameans fled before Israel; and David killed of the Arameans seven hundred chariot teams and forty thousand horsemen,[a] and wounded Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19 When all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel, and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites any more.

David Defeats the Ammonites(A)
10 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2 David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,(B) just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, 3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out(C) and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,(D) cut off their garments at the buttocks,(E) and sent them away.
5 When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious(F) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean(G) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob(H) and Zobah,(I) as well as the king of Maakah(J) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.(K)
7 On hearing this, David sent Joab(L) out with the entire army of fighting men. 8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.
9 Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 10 He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai(M) his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11 Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. 12 Be strong,(N) and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”(O)
13 Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites(P) realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. 18 But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.[a] He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject(Q) to them.
So the Arameans(R) were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.

10 Dopo il re degli Ammoniti morì e Canùn suo figlio regnò al suo posto. 2 Davide disse: «Io voglio usare a Canùn figlio di Nacàs la benevolenza che suo padre usò a me». Davide mandò alcuni suoi ministri a fargli le condoglianze per suo padre. Ma quando i ministri di Davide furono giunti nel paese degli Ammoniti, 3 i capi degli Ammoniti dissero a Canùn, loro signore: «Credi tu che Davide ti abbia mandato consolatori per onorare tuo padre? Non ha piuttosto mandato da te i suoi ministri per esplorare la città, per spiarla e distruggerla?». 4 Allora Canùn prese i ministri di Davide, fece loro radere la metà della barba e tagliare le vesti a metà fino alle natiche, poi li lasciò andare. 5 Quando fu informato della cosa, Davide mandò alcuni incontro a loro, perché quegli uomini erano pieni di vergogna. Il re fece dire loro: «Restate a Gerico finché vi sia cresciuta di nuovo la barba, poi tornerete».
Prima campagna ammonita
6 Gli Ammoniti, vedendo che si erano attirati l'odio di Davide, mandarono a prendere al loro soldo ventimila fanti degli Aramei di Bet-Recòb e degli Aramei di Zobà, mille uomini del re di Maacà e dodicimila uomini della gente di Tob. 7 Quando Davide sentì questo, inviò contro di loro Ioab con tutto l'esercito dei prodi. 8 Gli Ammoniti uscirono e si schierarono in battaglia all'ingresso della porta della città, mentre gli Aramei di Zobà e di Recòb e la gente di Tob e di Maacà stavano soli nella campagna. 9 Ioab vide che quelli erano pronti ad attaccarlo di fronte e alle spalle. Scelse allora un corpo tra i migliori Israeliti, lo schierò in ordine di battaglia contro gli Aramei 10 e affidò il resto del popolo al fratello Abisài, per tener testa agli Ammoniti. 11 Disse ad Abisài: «Se gli Aramei sono più forti di me, tu mi verrai in aiuto; se invece gli Ammoniti sono più forti di te, verrò io in tuo aiuto. 12 Abbi coraggio e dimostriamoci forti per il nostro popolo e per le città del nostro Dio. Il Signore faccia quello che a lui piacerà». 14 Quando gli Ammoniti videro che gli Aramei erano fuggiti, fuggirono anch'essi davanti ad Abisài e rientrarono nella città. Allora Ioab tornò dalla spedizione contro gli Ammoniti e venne a Gerusalemme.
Vittoria sugli Aramei
15 Gli Aramei, vedendo che erano stati battuti da Israele, si riunirono insieme. 16 Hadad-Ezer mandò messaggeri e schierò in campo gli Aramei che abitavano oltre il fiume e quelli giunsero a Chelàm con alla testa Sobàk, capo dell'esercito di Hadad-Ezer. 17 La cosa fu riferita a Davide, che radunò tutto Israele, passò il Giordano e giunse a Chelàm. Gli Aramei si schierarono in battaglia contro Davide. 18 Ma gli Aramei fuggirono davanti a Israele: Davide uccise agli Aramei settecento pariglie di cavalli e quarantamila uomini; battè anche Sobàk capo del loro esercito, che morì in quel luogo. 19 Quando tutti i re vassalli di Hadad-Ezer si videro sconfitti da Israele, fecero pace con Israele e gli rimasero sottoposti. Gli Aramei non osarono più venire in aiuto degli Ammoniti.
