David Defeats the Ammonites(A)
10 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2 David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,(B) just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, 3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out(C) and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,(D) cut off their garments at the buttocks,(E) and sent them away.
5 When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious(F) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean(G) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob(H) and Zobah,(I) as well as the king of Maakah(J) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.(K)
7 On hearing this, David sent Joab(L) out with the entire army of fighting men. 8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.
9 Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 10 He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai(M) his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11 Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. 12 Be strong,(N) and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”(O)
13 Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites(P) realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. 18 But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.[a] He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject(Q) to them.
So the Arameans(R) were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.

10 (A)Now it happened afterward that (B)the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place. 2 Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of (C)Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent [a]some of his servants to console him about his father. But when David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites, 3 the commanders of the Ammonites said to their lord Hanun, “[b]Do you think that David is simply honoring your father since he has sent you servants [c]to console you? (D)Has David not sent his servants to you in order to explore the city, to spy it out and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun took David’s servants and (E)shaved off half of their beards, and (F)cut off their robes in the middle as far as their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When messengers informed David, he sent servants to meet them, because the men were extremely humiliated. And the king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back, and then you shall return.”
6 Now when the sons of Ammon saw that (G)they had become repulsive to David, the sons of Ammon sent messengers and (H)hired the Arameans of (I)Beth-rehob and the (J)Arameans of Zobah, twenty thousand foot soldiers, and the king of (K)Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob with twelve thousand men. 7 When David heard about this, he sent Joab and all the army, the warriors. 8 And the sons of Ammon came out and lined up for battle (L)at the entrance of the [d]city, while the Arameans of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of (M)Tob and Maacah were stationed by themselves in the field.
9 Now when Joab saw that [e]the battle was set against him at the front and at the rear, he selected warriors from all the choice men in Israel, and lined them up against the Arameans. 10 But the remainder of the people he placed [f]under the command of his brother Abishai, and he lined them up against the sons of Ammon. 11 And he said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come to help you. 12 (N)Be strong, and let’s show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; and (O)may the Lord do what is good in His sight.” 13 So Joab and the people who were with him advanced to the battle against the Arameans, and (P)they fled from him. 14 When the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they also fled from Abishai and entered the city. (Q)Then Joab returned from fighting against the sons of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.
15 When the Arameans saw that they had been [g]defeated by Israel, they assembled together. 16 (R)And Hadadezer sent word and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam; and (S)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer [h]led them. 17 Now when it was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans lined up against David and fought him. 18 But the Arameans fled from Israel, and David killed (T)seven hundred charioteers of the Arameans and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings, servants of Hadadezer, saw that they had been [i]defeated by Israel, (U)they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the sons of Ammon anymore.

10 Después de esto murió el rey de los amonitas y le sucedió en el trono su hijo Janún. 2 David dijo:
— Quiero mostrar a Janún, el hijo de Najás, la misma lealtad que su padre tuvo conmigo.
Y envió a sus servidores para darle el pésame por su padre. Pero cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país amonita, 3 los dignatarios amonitas dijeron a su señor Janún:
— ¿Crees que David ha enviado emisarios sólo para darte el pésame y mostrarte su estima por tu padre? ¿No te habrá enviado más bien su embajada para inspeccionar la ciudad, explorarla y luego destruirla?
4 Entonces Janún apresó a los servidores de David, les afeitó la mitad de la barba, les cortó los vestidos hasta las nalgas y luego los expulsó. 5 Cuando David se enteró, envió mensajeros a su encuentro, pues se sentían muy avergonzados, para decirles:
— Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba y entonces regresan.
6 Los amonitas comprendieron que habían provocado a David y enviaron a contratar como mercenarios a veinte mil soldados arameos de Bet Rejob y de Sobá, a mil hombres del rey de Maacá y doce mil hombres de Tob. 7 David se enteró y mandó a Joab con todo el ejército de guerreros. 8 Los amonitas salieron y formaron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la ciudad. Los arameos de Sobá y Rejob y los hombres de Tob y Maacá se quedaron aparte, en el campo. 9 Cuando Joab se vio envuelto en un doble frente, por delante y por detrás, escogió un grupo selecto de soldados israelitas y tomó posiciones frente a los arameos. 10 Puso el resto del ejército bajo el mando de su hermano Abisay para que tomara posiciones frente a los amonitas 11 y le dijo:
— Si los arameos me superan, vienes en mi ayuda; y si los amonitas te superan, yo iré a ayudarte. 12 ¡Ánimo y a luchar por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios! Y el Señor hará lo que le plazca.
13 Joab y su gente se lanzaron al ataque contra los arameos, pero estos salieron huyendo ante él. 14 Y cuando los amonitas vieron que los arameos huían, ellos también salieron huyendo ante Abisay y se refugiaron en la ciudad. Joab volvió de su campaña contra los amonitas y regresó a Jerusalén.
15 Al verse derrotados por Israel, los arameos se reagruparon. 16 Por su parte, Adadézer hizo venir a los arameos que estaban al otro lado del río Éufrates, los cuales llegaron a Jelán, al mando de Sobac, jefe del ejército de Adadézer. 17 Informado de ello, David movilizó a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y llegó a Jelán. Los arameos formaron en orden de combate contra David y le presentaron batalla. 18 Pero finalmente se dieron a la fuga ante Israel, y David dio muerte a setecientos caballos de tiro y a cuarenta mil hombres. También hirió a su jefe, Sobac, que murió allí mismo. 19 Al verse derrotados por Israel, todos los reyes vasallos de Adadézer sellaron la paz con Israel y le quedaron sometidos. 2 És monda Dávid: Irgalmasságot teszek Hánonnal, Náhás fiával, miképen az õ atyja is velem irgalmasságot tett; és hozzá külde Dávid, hogy vigasztalja õt szolgái által atyja [halála] felõl. Mikor Dávid szolgái Ammon fiainak földére érkezének:
3 Mondának az Ammon fiainak vezérei Hánonnak, az õ uroknak: Vajjon becsüli-é Dávid ezzel elõtted a te atyádat, hogy hozzád vigasztalókat küldött? Vajjon Dávid nem inkább azért küldötte-é hozzád szolgáit, hogy a várost megszemléljék és kikémleljék és teljesen elpusztítsák.
4 Elfogatá azért Hánon a Dávid szolgáit, és szakáloknak felét lenyiratá, és ruháikat félben elmetszeté az alfelekig, és elbocsátá õket.
5 A mint ezt Dávidnak hírül hozták, eleikbe külde, (mert ezek az emberek igen meggyaláztattak) és ezt izené a király: Maradjatok Jerikhóban mindaddig, míg megnevekedik szakálotok; és [úgy] jõjjetek haza.
6 Látván pedig az Ammon fiai, hogy gyûlöltekké lettek Dávid elõtt, követet küldének az Ammon fiai, és felfogadák Siriában a Béth-Réhóbbelieket és ugyancsak Siriában a Czóbeusokat, húszezer gyalogot, és Maakának királyát ezer emberrel, és a Tóbbelieket, tizenkétezer embert.
7 A mint ezt Dávid meghallá, elküldötte Joábot és a vitézeknek egész seregét.
8 Kivonulának az Ammon fiai is, és csatarendbe állottak a kapu bejárata elõtt. A Siriabeli Czóbeusok, Réhóbbeliek, Tóbbeliek és Maaka magukban valának a mezõn.
9 Látván pedig Joáb, hogy mind elõl, mind hátul ellenség van õ ellene, kiválogatá az Izráel népének színét, és a Siriabeliek ellenében állítá fel.
10 A népnek maradékát az õ öcscsének, Abisainak vezetésére bízta, hogy felállítsa azt Ammon fiainak ellenében.
11 És monda: Ha erõsebbek lesznek a Siriabeliek nálamnál, nékem segítségül légy. Ha pedig az Ammon fiai náladnál hatalmasabbak lesznek, elmegyek, hogy megsegítselek.
12 Légy erõs és legyünk bátrak a mi nemzetségünkért és a mi Istenünknek városaiért; és az Úr cselekedjék úgy, a mint néki tetszik.
13 Elérkezék azért Joáb és az õ vele való sereg a Siriabeliek ellen az ütközetre, és megfutamodának õ elõtte.
14 Látván pedig az Ammon fiai, hogy megfutamodtak a Siriabeliek, megfutamodának [õk is] Abisai elõtt, és beszaladának a városba; és megtére Joáb az Ammon fiaitól és méne Jeruzsálembe.
15 Mikor pedig látták a Siriabeliek, hogy megverettettek az Izráeliták által, ismét együvé gyülekezének.
16 És elkülde Hadadézer, és elhozatá a Siriabelieket, a kik a vizen túl [valának,] és jövének Helámba; és Sobák, Hadadézernek fõvezére volt élükön.
17 Megizenék pedig Dávidnak, a ki egybegyûjté egész Izráelt, és általméne a Jordánon, és juta Hélámhoz: és sereget rendelének a Siriabeliek Dávid ellen, és megütközének vele.
18 De a Siriabeliek megfutamodtak Izráel elõtt, és levága Dávid a Siriabeliek közül hétszáz szekerest és negyvenezer lovagot, Sobákot is, a seregnek fõvezérét megölé; és ugyanott meghala.
19 Mikor pedig látták mindazok a királyok, a kik Hadadézernek szolgái valának, hogy az Izráel által megverettek, békét kötöttek Izráellel és nékik szolgálának; és nem merének többé a Siriabeliek kijõni az Ammon fiainak segítségére.
