David oye de la muerte de Saúl
1 Después de la muerte de Saúl(A), habiendo regresado David de derrotar[a] a los amalecitas, David permaneció dos días en Siclag(B). 2 Al tercer día, un hombre llegó del campamento de Saúl(C) con sus ropas rasgadas y polvo[b] sobre su cabeza(D). Al llegar ante David, se inclinó a tierra y se postró(E). 3 David le preguntó: «¿De dónde vienes?». «Me he escapado del campamento de Israel», le respondió. 4 David le preguntó[c]: «¿Qué aconteció(F)? Te ruego que me lo digas». Y él respondió[d]: «El pueblo ha huido de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo han caído y han muerto; también Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto». 5 Así que David le preguntó al joven que se lo había contado: «¿Cómo sabes que Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto?».
6 El joven que se lo había contado, dijo: «Yo estaba por casualidad en el monte Gilboa, y vi que Saúl estaba apoyado sobre su lanza(G). Y que los carros y los jinetes lo perseguían de cerca. 7 Al mirar él hacia atrás, me vio y me llamó. Y dije: “Aquí estoy”. 8 Y él me dijo: “¿Quién eres?”. Y le respondí: “Soy un amalecita(H)”. 9 Entonces él me dijo: “Te ruego que te pongas junto a mí y me mates, pues la agonía se ha apoderado de mí, porque todavía estoy con vida[e]”. 10 Me puse, pues, junto a él y lo maté(I), porque yo sabía que él no podía vivir después de haber caído. Tomé la corona(J) que estaba en su cabeza y la pulsera que estaba en su brazo, y los he traído aquí a mi señor».
11 Entonces David agarró sus ropas y las rasgó(K), y así hicieron también todos los hombres que estaban con él. 12 Se lamentaron y lloraron y ayunaron hasta el atardecer(L) por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán, por el pueblo del Señor y por la casa de Israel, porque habían caído a espada. 13 David le preguntó al joven que se lo había contado: «¿De dónde eres?». «Soy hijo de un extranjero, un amalecita(M)», le respondió. 14 Y David le dijo: «¿Cómo es que no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para destruir al ungido del Señor(N)?». 15 Llamando David a uno de los jóvenes, le dijo: «Ve, mátalo[f]». Y él lo hirió, y murió(O). 16 Y David le dijo: «Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza(P), porque tu boca ha testificado contra ti, al decir: “Yo he matado al ungido del Señor(Q)”».
Elegía de David por Saúl y Jonatán
17 Entonces David entonó esta elegía por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán(R), 18 y ordenó[g] que enseñaran a los hijos de Judá el cántico del arco; el cual está escrito en el libro de Jaser(S):
19 «Tu[h] hermosura, oh Israel, ha perecido sobre tus montes[i].
¡Cómo han caído los valientes(T)!
20 -»No lo anuncien en Gat,
No lo proclamen en las calles de Ascalón;
Para que no se regocijen las hijas de los filisteos(U),
Para que no se alegren las hijas de los incircuncisos(V).
21 -»Oh montes de Gilboa(W),
No haya sobre ustedes rocío ni lluvia, ni campos de ofrendas(X);
Porque allí fue deshonrado el escudo de los valientes,
El escudo de Saúl, no ungido con aceite(Y).
22 -»De la sangre de los muertos, de la grasa de los poderosos,
El arco de Jonatán no volvía atrás,
Y la espada(Z) de Saúl no volvía vacía.
23 -»Saúl y Jonatán, amados y amables en su vida,
Y en su muerte no fueron separados;
Más ligeros eran que águilas(AA),
Más fuertes que leones(AB).
24 -»Hijas de Israel, lloren por Saúl,
Que las vestía lujosamente de escarlata,
Que ponía adornos de oro en sus vestidos.
25 -»¡Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla(AC)!
Jonatán, muerto en tus alturas.
26 -»Estoy afligido por ti, Jonatán, hermano mío;
Tú me has sido muy estimado.
Tu amor fue para mí más maravilloso
Que el amor de las mujeres(AD).
27 -»¡Cómo han caído los valientes(AE),
Y perecido las armas de guerra(AF)!».

David se entera de la muerte de Saúl
1 Después de la muerte de Saúl, David volvió a Siclag tras haber derrotado a los amalecitas, y allí se quedó dos días. 2 Pero al tercer día llegó del campamento de Saúl un hombre que traía la ropa rasgada y la cabeza cubierta de tierra en señal de dolor. Cuando llegó ante David, se inclinó hasta el suelo en señal de reverencia. 3 David le preguntó:
—¿De dónde vienes?
—He logrado escapar del campamento israelita —respondió aquel hombre.
4 —¿Pues qué ha ocurrido? ¡Dímelo, por favor! —exigió David.
—Pues que el ejército huyó del combate, y que muchos de ellos murieron —contestó aquel hombre—. ¡Y también murieron Saúl y su hijo Jonatán!
5 —¿Y cómo sabes que Saúl y su hijo Jonatán han muerto? —preguntó David al criado que le había traído la noticia. 6 Éste respondió:
—Pues de pura casualidad estaba yo en el monte Guilboa, y vi a Saúl apoyándose en su lanza y a los carros de combate y la caballería enemiga a punto de alcanzarlo. 7 En ese momento él miró hacia atrás, y al verme me llamó. Yo me puse a sus órdenes. 8 Luego me preguntó quién era yo, y yo le respondí que era amalecita. 9 Entonces me pidió que me acercara a él y lo matara de una vez, porque ya había entrado en agonía y, sin embargo, todavía estaba vivo. 10 Así que me acerqué a él y lo maté, porque me di cuenta de que no podría vivir después de su caída. Luego le quité la corona de su cabeza y el brazalete que tenía en el brazo, para traérselos a usted, mi señor.
11 Entonces David y los que lo acompañaban se rasgaron la ropa en señal de dolor, 12 y lloraron y lamentaron la muerte de Saúl y de su hijo Jonatán, lo mismo que la derrota que habían sufrido los israelitas, el ejército del Señor, y ayunaron hasta el atardecer. 13 Después David le preguntó al joven que le había traído la noticia:
—¿Tú de dónde eres?
—Soy extranjero, un amalecita —contestó él.
14 —¿Y cómo es que te atreviste a levantar tu mano contra el rey escogido por el Señor? —exclamó David, 15 y llamando a uno de sus hombres, le ordenó:
—¡Anda, mátalo!
Y él hirió mortalmente al amalecita y lo mató, 16 mientras David decía:
—Tú eres responsable de tu propia muerte, pues tú mismo te declaraste culpable al confesar que habías matado al rey escogido por el Señor.
Lamento por Saúl y Jonatán
17 David entonó este lamento por la muerte de Saúl y de su hijo Jonatán, 18 y ordenó que se le enseñara a la gente de Judá. Este lamento se halla escrito en el Libro del Justo:
19 «¡Oh, Israel,
herida fue tu gloria en tus montañas!
¡Cómo han caído los valientes!
20 No lo anuncien en Gat
ni lo cuenten en las calles de Ascalón,
para que no se alegren las mujeres filisteas,
para que no salten de gozo esas paganas.
21 »¡Que no caiga más sobre ustedes
lluvia ni rocío, montes de Guilboa,
pues son campos de muerte!
Allí fueron pisoteados
los escudos de los héroes.
Allí perdió su brillo
el escudo de Saúl.
22 »Jamás Saúl y Jonatán volvieron
sin haber empapado espada y flechas
en la sangre y la grasa
de los guerreros más valientes.
23 »Saúl y Jonatán, amados y queridos,
ni en su vida ni en su muerte
estuvieron separados.
¡Más veloces eran que las águilas!
¡Más fuertes que los leones!
24 »¡Hijas de Israel, lloren por Saúl,
que las vestía de púrpura y lino fino,
que las adornaba con brocados de oro!
25 ¡Cómo han caído los valientes
en el campo de batalla!
¡Jonatán ha sido muerto
en lo alto de tus montes!
26 »¡Angustiado estoy por ti,
Jonatán, hermano mío!
¡Con cuánta dulzura me trataste!
Para mí tu cariño superó
al amor de las mujeres.
27 ¡Cómo han caído los valientes!
¡Las armas han sido destruidas!»

The Report of Saul’s Death
1 Now it came to pass after the (A)death of Saul, when David had returned from (B)the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag, 2 on the third day, behold, it happened that (C)a man came from Saul’s camp (D)with his clothes [a]torn and dust on his head. So it was, when he came to David, that he (E)fell to the ground and prostrated himself.
3 And David said to him, “Where have you come from?”
So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
4 Then David said to him, (F)“How did the matter go? Please tell me.”
And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and (G)Jonathan his son are dead also.”
5 So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”
6 Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on (H)Mount Gilboa, there was (I)Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. 7 Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ 9 He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for [b]anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’ 10 So I stood over him and (J)killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
11 Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and (K)tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they (L)mourned and wept and (M)fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the (N)people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13 Then David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?”
And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”
14 So David said to him, “How (O)was it you were not (P)afraid to (Q)put forth your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” 15 Then (R)David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and execute him!” And he struck him so that he died. 16 So David said to him, (S)“Your blood is on your own head, for (T)your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’ ”
The Song of the Bow
17 Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son, 18 (U)and he told them to teach the children of Judah the Song of the Bow; indeed it is written (V)in the Book [c]of Jasher:
19 “The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places!
(W)How the mighty have fallen!
20 (X)Tell it not in Gath,
Proclaim it not in the streets of (Y)Ashkelon—
Lest (Z)the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
Lest the daughters of (AA)the uncircumcised triumph.
21 “O (AB)mountains of Gilboa,
(AC)Let there be no dew nor rain upon you,
Nor fields of offerings.
For the shield of the mighty is [d]cast away there!
The shield of Saul, not (AD)anointed with oil.
22 From the blood of the slain,
From the fat of the mighty,
(AE)The bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
And the sword of Saul did not return empty.
23 “Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives,
And in their (AF)death they were not divided;
They were swifter than eagles,
They were (AG)stronger than lions.
24 “O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury;
Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
25 “How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan was slain in your high places.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
You have been very pleasant to me;
(AH)Your love to me was wonderful,
Surpassing the love of women.
27 “How(AI) the mighty have fallen,
And the weapons of war perished!”
