Nalaman ni David ang tungkol sa Kamatayan ni Saul
1 Pagkamatay ni Saul, nang bumalik na si David mula sa pagpatay sa mga Amalekita, nanatili si David ng dalawang araw sa Siclag.
2 At nangyari, nang ikatlong araw na, may isang lalaking lumabas sa kampo mula kay Saul na punit ang damit at may lupa sa kanyang ulo. Kaya nga nang dumating siya kay David, siya ay nagpatirapa sa lupa at nagbigay-galang.
3 Sinabi ni David sa kanya, “Saan ka nanggaling?” At kanyang sinabi sa kanya, “Nakatakas ako mula sa kampo ng Israel.”
4 Sinabi ni David sa kanya, “Ano ang nangyari? Sabihin mo sa akin.” At siya'y sumagot, “Ang taong-bayan ay tumakas sa labanan, at marami sa mga tao ay nabuwal at namatay, si Saul at si Jonathan na kanyang anak ay patay na rin.”
5 At sinabi ni David sa binatang nagbalita sa kanya, “Paano mo nalaman na si Saul at si Jonathan na kanyang anak ay patay na?”
6 Sinabi(A) ng binatang nagbalita sa kanya, “Nagkataong ako ay nasa bundok ng Gilboa at naroroon si Saul na nakasubsob sa kanyang sibat samantalang papalapit sa kanya ang mga karwahe at mga mangangabayo.
7 Nang siya'y lumingon, nakita niya ako. Tinawag niya ako, at ako'y sumagot, ‘Narito ako.’
8 Sinabi niya sa akin, ‘Sino ka?’ Ako'y sumagot sa kanya, ‘Ako'y isang Amalekita.’
9 At sinabi niya sa akin, ‘Tumayo ka sa tabi ko, ipinapakiusap ko sa iyo, at patayin mo ako, dahil hirap na hirap na ako, ngunit ako'y buháy pa.’[a]
10 Kaya't tumayo ako sa tabi niya at pinatay ko siya, sapagkat nakakatiyak ako na siya'y hindi mabubuhay pagkatapos na siya'y nabuwal. At kinuha ko ang korona na nasa kanyang ulo at ang pulseras na nasa kanyang kamay, at dinala ko rito sa aking panginoon.”
11 Nang magkagayo'y hinawakan ni David ang kanyang kasuotan at pinunit iyon; gayundin ang ginawa ng lahat ng mga lalaking kasama niya.
12 Sila'y nagluksa, umiyak, at nag-ayuno hanggang sa paglubog ng araw dahil kay Saul at kay Jonathan na kanyang anak, dahil sa bayan ng Panginoon, at sa sambahayan ng Israel, sapagkat sila'y namatay sa pamamagitan ng tabak.
13 Sinabi ni David sa binatang nagbalita sa kanya, “Taga-saan ka?” At siya'y sumagot, “Ako'y anak ng isang dayuhan, isang Amalekita.”
14 Sinabi ni David sa kanya, “Bakit hindi ka natakot na magbuhat ng iyong kamay upang patayin ang hinirang[b] ng Panginoon?”
15 At tinawag ni David ang isa sa mga kabataan at sinabi, “Pumarito ka at patayin mo siya.” At kanyang tinaga siya na kanyang ikinamatay.
16 Sinabi ni David sa kanya, “Ang iyong dugo ay mapasaiyong ulo sapagkat ang iyong bibig ang sumaksi laban sa iyo, na nagsasabi, ‘Aking pinatay ang hinirang ng Panginoon.’”
Ang Panaghoy ni David para kina Saul at Jonathan
17 Tinangisan ni David ng ganitong panaghoy si Saul at si Jonathan na kanyang anak,
18 at(B) sinabi niyang ito ay dapat ituro sa mga mamamayan ng Juda; nasusulat sa Aklat ni Jaser.[c] Sinabi niya:
19 “Ang iyong kaluwalhatian, O Israel ay pinatay sa iyong matataas na dako!
Paano nabuwal ang magigiting!
20 Huwag ninyong sabihin sa Gat,
huwag ninyong ibalita sa mga lansangan ng Ascalon;
baka ang mga anak na babae ng mga Filisteo ay magalak,
baka ang mga anak na babae ng mga di-tuli ay magsaya.
21 “Kayong mga bundok ng Gilboa,
huwag magkaroon ng hamog, o ulan sa inyo,
kahit masasaganang bukid,
sapagkat doon ang kalasag ng magiting ay narumihan,
ang kalasag ni Saul na hindi binuhusan ng langis.
22 “Mula sa dugo ng pinatay,
mula sa taba ng magiting,
ang busog ni Jonathan ay hindi umurong,
ang tabak ni Saul ay hindi bumalik nang walang laman.
23 “Sina Saul at Jonathan, minamahal at kaibig-ibig!
Sa buhay at sa kamatayan ay hindi sila nagkahiwalay;
sila'y higit na maliliksi kaysa mga agila,
sila'y higit na malalakas kaysa mga leon.
24 “Kayong mga anak na babae ng Israel, iyakan ninyo si Saul,
na sa inyo'y nagbihis ng matingkad na pula,
na siyang naglagay ng palamuting ginto sa inyong mga kasuotan.
25 “Paano nabuwal ang magigiting
sa gitna ng labanan!
“Si Jonathan ay patay na nakabulagta sa iyong matataas na dako.
26 Ako'y namamanglaw dahil sa iyo, kapatid kong Jonathan;
ikaw ay naging kalugud-lugod sa akin;
ang iyong pagmamahal sa akin ay kahanga-hanga,
higit pa sa pagmamahal ng mga babae.
27 “Paano nabuwal ang magigiting,
at nasira ang mga sandatang pandigma!”

1 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;
2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
3 And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
4 And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
5 And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?
6 And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.
7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.
8 And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.
9 He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
10 So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.
11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
13 And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the Lord's anointed?
15 And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.
16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the Lord's anointed.
17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)
19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.
22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.
26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

David Hears of Saul’s Death(A)
1 After the death(B) of Saul, David returned from striking down(C) the Amalekites(D) and stayed in Ziklag two days. 2 On the third day a man(E) arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head.(F) When he came to David, he fell(G) to the ground to pay him honor.(H)
3 “Where have you come from?” David asked him.
He answered, “I have escaped from the Israelite camp.”
4 “What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.”
“The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”
5 Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”
6 “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,(I)” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. 7 When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’
8 “He asked me, ‘Who are you?’
“‘An Amalekite,(J)’ I answered.
9 “Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me!(K) I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’
10 “So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown(L) that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.”
11 Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore(M) them. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13 David said to the young man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?”
“I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,(N)” he answered.
14 David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?(O)”
15 Then David called one of his men and said, “Go, strike him down!”(P) So he struck him down, and he died.(Q) 16 For David had said to him, “Your blood be on your own head.(R) Your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”
David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan
17 David took up this lament(S) concerning Saul and his son Jonathan,(T) 18 and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):(U)
20 “Tell it not in Gath,(X)
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,(Y)
lest the daughters of the Philistines(Z) be glad,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.(AA)
21 “Mountains of Gilboa,(AB)
may you have neither dew(AC) nor rain,(AD)
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.[b](AE)
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.(AF)
22 “From the blood(AG) of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow(AH) of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
23 Saul and Jonathan—
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,(AI)
they were stronger than lions.(AJ)
24 “Daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet and finery,
who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.(AK)
25 “How the mighty have fallen in battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve(AL) for you, Jonathan(AM) my brother;(AN)
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,(AO)
more wonderful than that of women.
27 “How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished!”(AP)
