⁴“What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.”

“The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”

⁴Then David said to him, ^(A)“How did the matter go? Please tell me.”

And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and ^(B)Jonathan his son are dead also.”

⁹“Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me!^(A) I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’

⁹He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for ^[a]anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’
