¹² They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Yahweh,^[a] and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

⁶ Then Ezra rose up from before God’s house, and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. When he came there, he didn’t eat bread or drink water, for he mourned because of the trespass of the exiles.

⁴ When I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned several days; and I fasted and prayed before the God^[a] of heaven,

³ In every province, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

² In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three whole weeks. ³ I ate no pleasant food. No meat or wine came into my mouth. I didn’t anoint myself at all, until three whole weeks were fulfilled.
