Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(A) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(B) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(C)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(D) and to knowledge, self-control;(E) and to self-control, perseverance;(F) and to perseverance, godliness;(G) and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(H) For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(I) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(J) But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(K) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(L)

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling(M) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(N) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(O) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(P)

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(Q) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(R) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(S) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(T) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(U) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(V) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(W) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(X) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(Y) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b](Z) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(AA)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(AB) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(AC) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(AD) and the morning star(AE) rises in your hearts.(AF) 20 Above all, you must understand(AG) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(AH) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(AI)

Footnotes

  1. 2 Peter 1:10 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family.
  2. 2 Peter 1:17 Matt. 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35

By these he has given us very great and precious promises,(A) so that through them you may share in the divine nature,(B) escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control,(C) self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection,(D) and brotherly affection with love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being useless(E) or unfruitful(F) in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The person who lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from his past sins. 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election,(G) because if you do these things you will never stumble. 11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom(H) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

12 Therefore I will always remind you about these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth(I) you now have. 13 I think it is right, as long as I am in this bodily tent,(J) to wake you up with a reminder, 14 since I know that I will soon lay aside my tent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has indeed made clear to me.(K) 15 And I will also make every effort so that you are able to recall these things at any time after my departure.[a]

The Trustworthy Prophetic Word

16 For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ;(L) instead, we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(M) 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying “This is my beloved Son,[b] with whom I am well-pleased!” (N) 18 We ourselves heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.(O) 19 We also have the prophetic word strongly confirmed, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place,(P) until the day dawns(Q) and the morning star(R) rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man;(S) instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(T)

  1. 1:15 Or death
  2. 1:17 Or my Son, my beloved

[a]For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent (A)promises, so that by them you may become (B)partakers of the divine nature, having (C)escaped the (D)corruption that is in (E)the world by lust. Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith (F)supply (G)moral [b]excellence, and in your moral excellence, (H)knowledge, and in your knowledge, (I)self-control, and in your self-control, (J)perseverance, and in your perseverance, (K)godliness, and in your godliness, (L)brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor (M)unfruitful in the true (N)knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is (O)blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his (P)purification from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His (Q)calling and (R)choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never (S)stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into (T)the eternal kingdom of our (U)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be (V)abundantly (W)supplied to you.

12 Therefore, (X)I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in (Y)the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it (Z)right, as long as I am in (AA)this earthly dwelling, to (AB)stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that (AC)the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, (AD)as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my (AE)departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

Eyewitnesses

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised (AF)tales when we made known to you the (AG)power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were (AH)eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an [c](AI)utterance as this was [d]made to Him by the (AJ)Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this [e]utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the (AK)holy mountain.

19 [f]So we have (AL)the prophetic word made more (AM)sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to (AN)a lamp shining in a dark place, until the (AO)day dawns and the (AP)morning star arises (AQ)in your hearts. 20 But (AR)know this first of all, that (AS)no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for (AT)no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men (AU)moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
