Manasse kung i Juda

33 Manasse var tolv år när han blev kung, och han regerade femtiofem år i Jerusalem. 2 Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon, efter den avskyvärda seden hos de folk som Herren hade fördrivit för Israels barn. 3 Han byggde på nytt upp de offerhöjder som hans fader Hiskia hade brutit ner. Och han reste altaren åt baalerna och gjorde aseror, och han tillbad och tjänade himlens hela härskara. 4 Han byggde altaren i Herrens hus. Det var om detta hus som Herren hade sagt: "I Jerusalem skall mitt namn vara för evig tid." 5 Han byggde altaren åt himlens hela härskara på de båda förgårdarna till Herrens hus. 6 Han lät sina barn gå genom eld i Hinnoms sons dal och utövade teckentyderi, svartkonst och trolldom, skaffade sig andebesvärjare och spåmän och gjorde mycket som var ont i Herrens ögon, så att han väckte hans vrede.

7 Avgudabilden som han gjort ställde han in i Guds hus om vilket Gud hade sagt till David och hans son Salomo: "I detta hus och i Jerusalem som jag har utvalt bland alla Israels stammar, vill jag fästa mitt namn för evig tid. 8 Jag skall inte mer låta Israel vandra bort från det land som jag har bestämt åt era fäder, om de endast håller fast vid och följer allt vad jag har befallt dem, efter den lag, de stadgar och föreskrifter som de har fått genom Mose." 9 Men Manasse förledde Juda och Jerusalems invånare, så att de gjorde mer ont än de folk som Herren hade utrotat för Israels barn.

10 Herren talade till Manasse och hans folk, men de gav inte akt på hans ord. 11 Då lät Herren den assyriske kungens arméer komma över dem. De slog Manasse i bojor och fängslade honom med kopparbojor och förde honom till Babel. 12 Men när han nu var i nöd, bönföll han inför Herren, sin Gud, och ödmjukade sig djupt för sina fäders Gud. 13 Och när han på detta sätt bad till honom, bönhörde Herren honom och lyssnade till hans bön och lät honom komma tillbaka till Jerusalem som kung. Då insåg Manasse att det är Herren som är Gud.

14 Han byggde en yttermur till Davids stad väster om Gihon i dalen, fram till ingången till Fiskporten och runt omkring Ofel och gjorde den mycket hög. Sedan tillsatte han befälhavare i alla befästa städer i Juda. 15 Han avlägsnade de främmande gudarna och avgudabilden från Herrens hus, liksom alla de altaren som han hade byggt på det berg där Herrens hus stod, och i Jerusalem, och han kastade ut dem utanför staden. 16 Vidare upprättade han Herrens altare och offrade gemenskapsoffer och tackoffer på det och uppmanade Juda att tjäna Herren, Israels Gud. 17 Folket offrade ändå på höjderna, men endast åt Herren, sin Gud.

18 Vad som mer finns att säga om Manasse och om hans bön till sin Gud och om de ord som siarna talade till honom i Herrens, Israels Guds, namn, det står i Israels kungars krönika. 19 Om hans bön och hur han blev bönhörd, om all hans synd och trolöshet och om de platser där han byggde offerhöjder och ställde upp aseror och gjutna bilder, innan han ödmjukade sig, är skrivet i Hosajs krönika. 20 Manasse gick till vila hos sina fäder, och man begravde honom där han bodde. Hans son Amon blev kung efter honom.

Amon kung i Juda

21 Amon var tjugotvå år när han blev kung, och han regerade två år i Jerusalem. 22 Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon, så som hans fader Manasse hade gjort. Han offrade åt alla de avgudabilder som han fader Manasse hade tillverkat, och han dyrkade dem. 23 Men han ödmjukade sig inte inför Herren, så som hans fader Manasse hade gjort, utan han hopade skuld på skuld. 24 Och hans tjänare sammansvor sig mot honom och dödade honom hemma i hans hus. 25 Men folket i landet dödade alla som hade sammansvurit sig mot kung Amon Därefter gjorde folket i landet hans son Josia till kung efter honom.

Manasse regerar i Juda

33 Manasse var bara tolv år gammal när han blev kung, och han regerade i femtiofem år i Jerusalem.

2 Men det var en ogudaktig regeringsperiod, för han uppmuntrade sitt folk att tillbe samma gudar som de hedniska folken i landet hade tillbett innan Herren drev ut dem för Israels skull.

3 Han byggde upp alla de hedniska altaren som hans far Hiskia hade rivit ner, baalsaltare, aseror och avbilder av solen, månen och stjärnorna.

4-5 Han byggde till och med altaren på templets båda förgårdar till solen, månen och stjärnorna, på den plats om vilken Herren hade sagt att han för alltid skulle tillbes.

6 Manasse offrade dessutom sina egna barn i eld i Hinnoms dal. Han rådfrågade spåmän och andebesvärjare och gjorde mycket ont och utmanande i Herrens ögon.

7 Ja, han ställde upp en avgud i Guds tempel, precis där Gud hade sagt till David och hans son Salomo: Jag ska äras här i detta tempel och i Jerusalem, i den stad som jag har valt att bli ärad i framför alla andra städer i Israel.

8 Om ni bara lyder mina befallningar, de lagar och föreskrifter som ni fått genom Mose, så kommer jag aldrig mer att låta Israel behöva lämna detta land, som jag gav era förfäder.

9 Men Manasse uppmuntrade folket i Juda och Jerusalem att göra mer ont än de folk som Herren hade utplånat när Israel intog landet.

10 Herren talade till Manasse och hans folk, med de brydde sig inte om hans varningar.

11 Då skickade Gud de assyriska arméerna mot honom. De tog honom till fånga, satte en ring i hans näsa, band honom med kopparkedjor och förde honom till Babylon.

12 Då kom han äntligen till besinning och bad ödmjukt till Gud om hjälp.

13 Herren lyssnade och svarade på hans bön. Manasse fick återvända till Jerusalem och till sitt kungarike, och då först insåg han att Herren verkligen är Gud.

14 Det var efter detta som han återuppbyggde den yttre muren kring Davids stad och muren från Gihonkällan i Kidrons dal till Fiskporten och runt Citadellet, som han byggde högre än tidigare. Han förlade också trupper i alla befästa städer i Juda.

15 Han flyttade bort alla främmande gudar från höjderna, tog bort sin avgud ur templet och rev ner de altaren han byggt på tempelberget, och de altaren som fanns i Jerusalem. Allt kastade han ut från staden.

16 Sedan byggde han upp Herrens altare, offrade tackoffer och lovoffer och uppmanade folket i Juda att tillbe Herren, Israels Gud.

17 Ändå fortsatte folket att offra på de altaren som fanns på höjderna, men bara till Herren, sin Gud.

19 Hans bön och det sätt på vilket Gud svarade, hans synder och misstag och en förteckning över de platser där han placerat avgudar på höjderna och satt upp Aseror och olika slags avgudabilder innan han böjde sig för Herren, finns i Profetens krönika.

Amon regerar i Juda

20-21 När Manasse dog begravdes han i sitt eget palats, och hans son Amon blev kung efter honom.Amon var tjugotvå år gammal när han började regera i Jerusalem, men han regerade bara i två år.

22 Under sin regeringstid gjorde han det som var ogudaktigt, precis som sin far Manasse under de första år som kung. Amon offrade nämligen till alla de avgudar som hans far offrat till,

23 men han ändrade sig inte, som hans far hade gjort, utan syndade i stället mer och mer.

24 Till slut mördades han av sina egna officerare i sitt palats.

25 Men folket vände sig mot kuppmakarna och dödade dem. Sedan utropade de hans son Josia till ny kung.

Manasseh’s Reign

33 Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem. 2 He did evil in the sight of[a] the Lord and committed the same horrible sins practiced by the nations[b] whom the Lord drove out ahead of the Israelites. 3 He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he set up altars for the Baals and made Asherah poles. He bowed down to all the stars in the sky[c] and worshiped[d] them. 4 He built altars in the Lord’s temple, about which the Lord had said, “Jerusalem will be my permanent home.”[e] 5 In the two courtyards of the Lord’s temple he built altars for all the stars in the sky. 6 He passed his sons through the fire[f] in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and practiced divination, omen reading, and sorcery. He set up a ritual pit to conjure up underworld spirits and appointed magicians to supervise it.[g] He did a great amount of evil in the sight of the Lord and angered him.[h] 7 He put an idolatrous image he had made in God’s temple, about which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, “This temple in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will be my permanent home.[i] 8 I will not make Israel again leave the land I gave to their ancestors,[j] provided that they carefully obey all I commanded them, the whole law, the rules and regulations given through Moses.” 9 But Manasseh misled the people of[k] Judah and the residents of Jerusalem so that they sinned more than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed ahead of the Israelites.

10 The Lord confronted[l] Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention. 11 So the Lord brought against them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria. They seized Manasseh, put hooks in his nose,[m] bound him with bronze chains, and carried him away to Babylon. 12 In his pain[n] Manasseh[o] asked the Lord his God for mercy[p] and truly[q] humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.[r] 13 When he prayed to the Lord,[s] the Lord[t] responded to him[u] and answered favorably[v] his cry for mercy. The Lord[w] brought him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. Then Manasseh realized that the Lord is the true God.

14 After this Manasseh[x] built up the outer wall of the City of David[y] on the west side of the Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate and all around the terrace; he made it much higher. He placed army officers in all the fortified cities in Judah.

15 He removed the foreign gods and images from the Lord’s temple and all the altars he had built on the hill of the Lord’s temple and in Jerusalem; he threw them outside the city. 16 He erected the altar of the Lord and offered on it peace offerings and thank offerings. He told the people of[z] Judah to serve the Lord God of Israel. 17 However, the people continued to offer sacrifices at the high places, but only to the Lord their God.

18 The rest of the events of Manasseh’s reign, including his prayer to his God and the words the prophets[aa] spoke to him in the name of the Lord God of Israel, are recorded[ab] in the Annals of the Kings of Israel. 19 The Annals of the Prophets include his prayer, give an account of how the Lord responded to it, record all his sins and unfaithful acts, and identify the sites where he built high places and erected Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself.[ac] 20 Manasseh passed away[ad] and was buried in his palace. His son Amon replaced him as king.

Amon’s Reign

21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for two years in Jerusalem. 22 He did evil in the sight of[ae] the Lord, just as his father Manasseh had done. Amon offered sacrifices to all the idols his father Manasseh had made, and worshiped[af] them. 23 He did not humble himself before the Lord as his father Manasseh had done.[ag] Amon was guilty of great sin.[ah] 24 His servants conspired against him and killed him in his palace. 25 The people of the land executed all who had conspired against King Amon, and they[ai] made his son Josiah king in his place.
