Joas wordt koning van Juda
11 Toen Atalia, de moeder van Ahazia, hoorde dat haar zoon dood was,[a] doodde ze al zijn kinderen. 2 Maar Joseba, de zus van Ahazia, wist met Ahazia's zoon Joas en zijn verzorgster te ontsnappen. Ze verstopte hem in één van de kamers van de tempel.[b] Daar verborg ze hem voor Atalia, zodat hij niet vermoord werd. 3 Zes jaar lang woonde Joas in het geheim bij haar in de tempel, terwijl Atalia het land regeerde.
4 Maar na die zes jaar liet de priester Jojada de aanvoerders van honderd mannen, de aanvoerders van de lijfwacht en de lijfwacht bij zich komen in de tempel van de Heer. Hij liet hen de zoon van Ahazia zien en sloot met hen een verbond. Hij liet hen zweren dat ze trouw zouden zijn aan Joas, de zoon van Ahazia. 5 Hij beval hun: "Eén derde deel van de groep die op de heilige rustdag dienst heeft, moet op wacht gaan staan bij het koninklijk paleis. 6 De rest moet de wacht houden bij de tempel: één derde deel bij de Surpoort en één derde deel bij de poort achter de paleiswacht. Zorg dat niemand de tempel binnengaat. 7 De twee andere groepen, dus iedereen die op de heilige rustdag vrij heeft, moeten in de tempel koning Joas bewaken. 8 Ga om de koning heen staan met je wapens in de hand. Dood iedereen die probeert langs jullie heen te komen. Blijf bij de koning, waar hij ook heen gaat."
9 De aanvoerders van honderd mannen deden wat Jojada had bevolen. Ze kwamen met al hun mannen naar hem toe: de mannen die op de heilige rustdag dienst hadden en de mannen die op de heilige rustdag vrij hadden. 10 De priester gaf hun speren en schilden. Dat waren de speren en schilden die van koning David geweest waren. Die werden in de tempel van de Heer bewaard. 11 De mannen van de lijfwacht gingen met hun wapens in de hand langs de hele tempel van de Heer staan, langs het altaar en de muur. Zo was de koning goed beschermd. 12 Toen bracht Jojada Joas, de zoon van koning Ahazia, naar buiten, zette hem de kroon op en gaf hem het verbond. Zo kroonden ze hem tot koning. Ze zalfden hem, klapten in hun handen en juichten: "Leve de koning!"
13 Atalia hoorde het gejuich. Ze ging naar de tempel van de Heer om te zien wat er aan de hand was. 14 Daar zag ze de koning bij de pilaar staan, zoals altijd werd gedaan als er een koning werd gekroond. De aanvoerders stonden naast de koning en bliezen op de trompet. Iedereen juichte. Atalia scheurde haar kleren en riep: "Verraad! Verraad!" 15 Maar de priester Jojada beval de aanvoerders: "Grijp haar en dood iedereen die probeert haar te redden. Maar dood Atalia niet in de tempel van de Heer." 16 Ze grepen haar, brachten haar langs de stallen naar het paleis en doodden haar daar.
17 Toen sloot Jojada een verbond tussen de Heer, het volk en de koning, dat ze het volk van de Heer wilden zijn.[c] Ook sloot hij een verbond tussen de koning en het volk. 18 Daarna ging het hele volk naar de tempel van Baäl en brak die af. De altaren en godenbeelden sloegen ze kapot. Ook doodden ze Mattan, de priester van Baäl, bij de altaren. Jojada liet bewaking komen bij de tempel. 19 Daarna nam hij de aanvoerders mee, de lijfwacht, de paleiswacht en de mensen. Samen haalden ze de koning op uit de tempel. Ze brachten hem via de poort van de lijfwacht naar het koninklijk paleis. Daar ging hij op de troon zitten. 20 Het hele land was blij. In de stad bleef het rustig, ook al was Atalia bij het paleis gedood.
21 Joas was zeven jaar toen hij koning werd.

11 亞哈謝的母親亞她利雅見兒子死了，便決定除掉王室後裔。 2 但約蘭王的女兒、亞哈謝的妹妹約示芭把亞哈謝的兒子約阿施從被殺的王子中偷出來，將他和乳母藏在一間臥室裡，才躲過亞她利雅，使約阿施沒有被殺。 3 約阿施和他的乳母在耶和華的殿裡藏了六年，那時亞她利雅篡位當政。
4 第七年，耶何耶大派人召迦利人[a]和衛兵的百夫長們到耶和華的殿裡，與他們立約，讓他們在耶和華的殿裡起誓，然後把約阿施王子帶到他們面前。 5 耶何耶大吩咐他們說：「你們在安息日值班的，三分之一要守衛王宮， 6 三分之一要守衛蘇珥門，三分之一要守住衛兵院後門。你們要輪流守衛。 7 安息日沒有值班的兩隊要在耶和華的殿裡保護王， 8 各人要手持兵器護衛在王周圍。凡擅自闖入者，都要處死。無論王去哪裡，你們都要緊隨左右。」 9 眾百夫長依令而行，各自率領安息日值班和休班的隨從來見耶何耶大。 10 耶何耶大把耶和華殿中大衛王的矛槍和盾牌交給百夫長。 11 從殿右到殿左，在祭壇和殿周圍，衛兵都手持兵器護衛王。 12 耶何耶大祭司領王子出來，給他戴上王冠，把律法書交給他，膏立他為王。眾人都鼓掌高呼：「願王萬歲！」
13 亞她利雅聽見衛兵和眾人的歡呼聲，便走進耶和華的殿，眾人都聚集在那裡。 14 她看見王照例站在柱旁，百夫長和吹號的人侍立在王左右，眾人都歡呼吹號，便撕裂衣服喊叫：「反了！反了！」 15 耶何耶大祭司認為不可在耶和華的殿裡處死亞她利雅，便命令領兵的百夫長：「把她帶出去。凡跟隨她的，都要殺掉。」 16 他們抓住她，把她帶到馬匹進出王宮的入口，在那裡殺了她。
17 耶何耶大讓王及民眾與耶和華立約，做耶和華的子民，也讓王與民眾立約。 18 於是，民眾出去拆毀了巴力廟，砸碎祭壇和偶像，在壇前殺了巴力的祭司瑪坦。耶何耶大派守衛保護耶和華的殿， 19 然後率領百夫長、迦利人、衛兵和民眾，護送王從耶和華的殿下來，經過衛兵院的門進入王宮。這樣，約阿施坐上了王位。 20 民眾都歡喜快樂，城裡安定，因為亞她利雅已在王宮那裡被處死。 21 約阿施七歲登基。

Queen Athaliah rules Judah
11 When Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother, learned of her son’s death, she immediately destroyed the entire royal family. 2 But Jehosheba, King Jehoram’s[a] daughter and Ahaziah’s sister, secretly took Ahaziah’s son Jehoash[b] from the rest of the royal children who were about to be murdered and hid[c] him in a bedroom along with his nurse. In this way Jehoash was hidden from Athaliah and wasn’t murdered. 3 He remained hidden with his nurse in the Lord’s temple for six years while Athaliah ruled the country.
4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of the Carites and of the guards and had them come to him at the Lord’s temple. He made a covenant with them, and made them swear a solemn pledge in the Lord’s temple. Then he showed them the king’s son. 5 He commanded them, “This is what you must do: A third of you coming on sabbath duty will guard the palace, 6 a second third will be at the Sur Gate, and the final third will be at the gate behind the guards. You will take turns guarding the temple.[d] 7 You who are in the first two groups that usually go off duty on the Sabbath should also guard the Lord’s temple to protect the king. 8 Surround the king completely, each of you with your weapons drawn. Whoever comes near your ranks must be killed. Stay near the king wherever he goes.”
9 The unit commanders did everything that Jehoiada the priest ordered. They each took charge of those men reporting for duty on the Sabbath as well as those going off duty on the Sabbath. They came to the priest Jehoiada. 10 Then the priest gave the unit commanders King David’s spears and shields, which were kept in the Lord’s temple. 11 The guards, each with their weapons drawn, then took up positions near the temple and the altar, stretching from the south side of the temple to the north side to protect the king. Everyone was holding his weapons, surrounding the king. 12 Jehoiada then brought out the king’s son, crowned him, gave him the royal law,[e] and made him king and anointed him, as everyone applauded and cried out, “Long live the king!”
13 When Athaliah heard the noise made by the guard and the people, she went to the people at the Lord’s temple 14 and saw the king standing by the royal pillar, as was the custom, with the commanders and trumpeters beside the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Athaliah ripped her clothes and screamed, “Treason! Treason!”
15 Then the priest Jehoiada ordered the unit commanders who were in charge of the army: “Take her out under guard,”[f] he told them, “and kill anyone who follows her.” This was because the priest had said, “She must not be executed in the Lord’s temple.” 16 They arrested her when she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate at the royal palace. She was executed there.
17 Jehoiada then made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that the people would belong to the Lord. The king and the people also made a covenant. 18 Then all the people of the land went to Baal’s temple and tore it down, smashing its altars and images into pieces. They executed Mattan, Baal’s priest, in front of the altars. The priest Jehoiada posted guards at the Lord’s temple. 19 Then he took the unit commanders, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they led the king down from the Lord’s temple, processing through the Guards’ Gate to the palace, where the king sat upon the royal throne. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was at peace now that Athaliah had been executed at the palace.

21 [g] Jehoash was 7 years old when he became king.
