Moab Rebels Against Israel
3 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel at Samaria (A)in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years. 2 And he did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, though not like his father and his mother; and (B)he took away the sacred pillar of Baal (C)which his father had made. 3 Nevertheless, (D)he clung to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, (E)which he made Israel sin; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder and (F)used to pay the king of Israel 100,000 lambs and the wool of 100,000 rams. 5 But it happened that (G)when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 And King Jehoram went out of Samaria [a]at that time and mustered all Israel. 7 Then he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?” And he said, “I will go up; (H)I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 8 And he said, “Which way shall we go up?” And he [b]answered, “The way of the wilderness of Edom.”
9 So (I)the king of Israel went with (J)the king of Judah and (K)the king of Edom; and they went around on a seven days’ journey, and there was no water for the camp or for the cattle that [c]followed them. 10 Then the king of Israel said, “Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 11 But Jehoshaphat said, “(L)Is there not a prophet of Yahweh here, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?” And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, “(M)Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, (N)who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.” 12 And Jehoshaphat said, “The word of Yahweh is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Now Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What do I have to do with you? (O)Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother.” And the king of Israel said to him, “No, for Yahweh has called these three kings together to give them into the hand of Moab.” 14 And Elisha said, “(P)As Yahweh of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you. 15 So now (Q)bring me a musician.” And it came about, when the musician played, that (R)the hand of Yahweh came upon him. 16 And he said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’ 17 For thus says Yahweh, ‘You shall not see wind nor shall you see rain; yet that valley (S)shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, both you and your livestock and your cattle. 18 And this is but a (T)light thing in the sight of Yahweh; He will also give the Moabites into your hand. 19 (U)Then you shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and fell every good tree and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.’” 20 Then it happened in the morning (V)about the time of offering the sacrifice, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21 Now all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them. And they summoned all who were able to [d]put on armor and older, and they stood on the border. 22 Then they rose early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood. 23 Then they said, “This is blood; the kings have surely fought together, and they have struck down one another. So now, Moab, to the spoil!” 24 So they came to the camp of Israel. And the Israelites arose and struck the Moabites. So they fled before them; and they went forward [e]into the land, striking down the Moabites. 25 (W)Thus they [f]tore down the cities; and each one threw a stone on every piece of good land and filled it. And they stopped all the springs of water and felled all the good trees, until in (X)Kir-hareseth they let its stones remain; however, the slingers went about it and struck it. 26 Then the king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him, so he took with him 700 men who drew swords, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not. 27 So he took his oldest son, who was to reign in his place, and (Y)offered him as a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel, and they set out from him and returned to their own land.

Giô-ram Trị Vì Y-sơ-ra-ên
3 Vào năm thứ mười tám triều vua Giê-hô-sa-phát của Giu-đa, Giô-ram con trai A-háp lên ngôi làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên. Giô-ram trị vì mười hai năm tại Sa-ma-ri. 2 Vua làm điều tội lỗi trước mặt CHÚA, dù không như cha và mẹ của vua đã làm, vì vua có dẹp bỏ trụ đá thờ thần Ba-anh mà cha mình đã lập. 3 Tuy nhiên vua vẫn bám lấy tội lỗi của Giê-rô-bô-am, con trai Nê-bát, là tội đã gây cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phạm tội; vua không từ bỏ tội lỗi ấy.
Chiến Tranh Với Dân Mô-áp
4 Thuở ấy, Mê-sa, vua của Mô-áp là vị vua có biệt tài nuôi chiên. Vua đã đồng ý cống nộp cho vua Y-sơ-ra-ên một trăm ngàn chiên con và lông của một trăm ngàn chiên đực. 5 Nhưng sau khi vua A-háp qua đời, thì vua của Mô-áp nổi loạn chống lại vua Y-sơ-ra-ên. 6 Vì thế, lúc ấy vua Giô-ram ở Sa-ma-ri đi ra động viên cả Y-sơ-ra-ên. 7 Vua sai sứ giả đến thưa với vua Giê-hô-sa-phát của Giu-đa rằng: “Vua của Mô-áp có nổi lên chống lại tôi, vua có thể đi với tôi để giúp đánh dân Mô-áp không?”
Vua Giê-hô-sa-phát đáp: “Tôi sẽ đi với vua. Tôi cũng như vua, dân tôi cũng như dân vua, chiến mã tôi cũng như chiến mã của vua.”
8 Rồi vua hỏi tiếp: “Nhưng chúng ta sẽ tấn công qua ngả nào?”
Giô-ram trả lời: “Qua ngả đồng hoang Ê-đôm.”
9 Vậy vua của Y-sơ-ra-ên, vua của Giu-đa, và vua của Ê-đôm kéo quân ra; nhưng họ đi lòng vòng mất bảy ngày, bấy giờ cả đại quân và các súc vật đi theo đều không còn nước uống.
10 Vua của Y-sơ-ra-ên bèn nói: “Than ôi! CHÚA đã gọi chúng ta, cả ba vua ra đây, chỉ để nộp vào tay dân Mô-áp mà thôi.”
11 Nhưng Giê-hô-sa-phát nói: “Ở đây chẳng có vị tiên tri nào của CHÚA để chúng ta có thể cầu vấn chăng?”
Một bầy tôi của vua Y-sơ-ra-ên tâu: “Thưa có Ê-li-sê, là người thường xối nước cho Ê-li rửa tay, ở gần đây.”
12 Giê-hô-sa-phát nói: “Người này có lời của CHÚA đó.” Vậy vua của Y-sơ-ra-ên, Giê-hô-sa-phát, và vua của Ê-đôm đi xuống gặp Ê-li-sê.
13 Ê-li-sê nói với vua Y-sơ-ra-ên: “Tôi với vua có can hệ gì chăng? Hãy đi cầu vấn các tiên tri của cha vua hoặc các tiên tri của mẹ vua.”
Nhưng vua của Y-sơ-ra-ên đáp: “Không đâu. Vì CHÚA đã gọi chúng tôi, cả ba vua đến, chỉ để nộp cho dân Mô-áp đó thôi.”
14 Ê-li-sê đáp: “Nguyện CHÚA Toàn Năng hằng sống, là Đấng tôi phục vụ, làm chứng. Nếu tôi không kính trọng Giê-hô-sa-phát, vua của Giu-đa, thì tôi chẳng coi vua ra gì và cũng không tiếp vua nữa. 15 Hãy đem cho tôi một người khảy đàn hạc.”
Đang khi người ấy khảy đàn hạc thì tay CHÚA giáng trên Ê-li-sê, 16 và ông nói: “CHÚA phán như vầy: ‘Ta sẽ làm cho thung lũng này đầy những hố nước.’[a] 17 Bởi CHÚA phán như vầy: ‘Các ngươi sẽ không thấy gió hay mưa, nhưng thung lũng sẽ đầy nước, để các ngươi sẽ uống. Các ngươi, bò lừa và súc vật các ngươi sẽ uống. 18 Nhưng đây chỉ là việc nhỏ trước mặt CHÚA. Vì Ngài sẽ trao Mô-áp vào trong tay các ngươi. 19 Các ngươi sẽ đánh hạ các thành kiên cố và các đô thị quan trọng. Các ngươi sẽ đốn hạ những cây tốt, lấp ngăn mọi suối nước, rải đá phá hoại tất cả những cánh đồng phì nhiêu.’ ”
20 Ngày hôm sau, vào lúc dâng tế lễ buổi sáng, thình lình nước từ hướng Ê-đôm đổ xuống, cho đến khi cả xứ tràn đầy nước.
21 Lúc ấy, khi toàn dân Mô-áp nghe rằng các vua đã kéo đến để tấn công họ, thì tất cả những ai có khả năng chiến đấu, từ người trẻ nhất đến người già nhất, đều được triệu tập, trang bị vũ khí và đưa ra trấn đóng ở biên thùy. 22 Sáng sớm họ thức dậy, ánh sáng mặt trời chiếu trên mặt nước, người Mô-áp thấy nước trước mặt họ trông đỏ như máu. 23 Họ nói với nhau: “Ấy là máu đó, các vua kia chắc đã đánh nhau và giết nhau chết rồi. Bây giờ, hỡi người Mô-áp, hãy đi cướp của!”
24 Nhưng khi họ đến trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên, quân Y-sơ-ra-ên chỗi dậy tấn công quân Mô-áp. Người Mô-áp bỏ chạy trước mặt người Y-sơ-ra-ên. Quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đuổi theo vào xứ Mô-áp, tiếp tục truy kích và đánh giết họ. 25 Đại quân của Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh hạ các thành, những cánh đồng phì nhiêu đều bị những cánh quân đi qua mỗi người ném vào một cục đá cho đến khi lấp đầy, mọi suối nước đều bị lấp ngăn, và mọi cây tốt đều bị đốn ngã. Chỉ có ở Kiệt Ha-rê-sết thì các vách thành bằng đá là còn lại cho đến khi đội quân bắn đá đến bao vây và tấn công nó.

Moab Revolts
3 Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”
“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked.
“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)
While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”
20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)
21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.
