Elijah Taken to Heaven
2 When the Lord was going to take Elijah to heaven in a windstorm, Elijah and Elisha left Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here because the Lord is sending me to Bethel.”
Elisha answered, “I solemnly swear, as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not abandon you.” So they went to Bethel.
3 Some of the disciples of the prophets at Bethel came to Elisha. They asked him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”
He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”
4 Elijah said, “Elisha, please stay here because the Lord is sending me to Jericho.”
Elisha answered, “I solemnly swear, as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not abandon you.” So they went to Jericho.
5 Then some of the disciples of the prophets who were in Jericho approached Elisha. They asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”
He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”
6 Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here because the Lord is sending me to the Jordan River.”
Elisha answered, “I solemnly swear, as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not abandon you.”
7 Fifty disciples of the prophets stood at a distance as Elijah and Elisha stood by the Jordan River. 8 Elijah took his coat, rolled it up, and struck the water with it. The water divided to their left and their right, and the two men crossed ⌞the river⌟ on dry ground.
9 While they were crossing, Elijah asked Elisha, “What should I do for you before I’m taken from you?”
Elisha answered, “Let me inherit a double share of your spirit.”
10 Elijah said, “You have asked for something difficult. If you see me taken from you, it will be yours. Otherwise, it will not.”
11 As they continued walking and talking, a fiery chariot with fiery horses separated the two of them, and Elijah went to heaven in a windstorm.
12 When Elisha saw this, he cried out, “Master! Master! Israel’s chariot and horses!” When he couldn’t see Elijah anymore, he grabbed his own garment and tore it in two ⌞to show his grief⌟. 13 Then he picked up Elijah’s coat (which had fallen off Elijah), went back, and stood on the bank of the Jordan River. 14 He took the coat and struck the water with it. He asked, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” As he struck the water, it divided to his left and his right, and Elisha crossed ⌞the river⌟.
15 The disciples of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him from a distance. They said, “Elijah’s spirit rests on Elisha!” Then they went to meet him and bowed in front of him with their faces touching the ground. 16 They said to him, “There are 50 strong men here with us. Please let them go and search for your master. Maybe the Lord’s Spirit lifted him up and dropped him on one of the hills or in one of the valleys.”
Elisha answered, “Don’t send them ⌞to look⌟.” 17 But the disciples kept urging him ⌞to send the men⌟ until he was embarrassed. So he said, “Send them.” They sent 50 men who searched for three days without finding him. 18 They returned to Elisha in Jericho, where he was waiting. He said, “Didn’t I tell you not to go?”
Elisha Purifies Jericho’s Water
19 The people of the city ⌞of Jericho⌟ told Elisha, “This city’s location is as good as you will ever find. But the water is bad, and the land cannot grow crops.”
20 Elisha said, “Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.” They brought it to him. 21 He went to the spring and threw the salt into it. Then he said, “This is what the Lord says: I have purified this water. No more deaths or crop failures will come from this water.” 22 To this day the water is still pure, as Elisha had said.
23 From there he went to Bethel. As he walked along the road, some boys came out of the city and mocked him. They said, “Go away, baldy! Go away!”
24 Looking back, he saw them and cursed them in the Lord’s name. Two bears came out of the woods and tore 42 of these youths apart. 25 He left that place, went to Mount Carmel, and returned to Samaria.

2 ఎలీషాతో, “దయచేసి ఇక్కడ వుండుము, ఎందుకనగా యెహోవా నన్ను బేతేలునకు వెళ్లుమని ఆదేశించాడు” అని చెప్పాడు.
కాని ఎలీషా, “యెహోవా జీవంతోడు, నా జీవం తోడు నేను నిన్ను విడిచి వెళ్లను” అని ఏలీయాతో చెప్పాడు. అందువల్ల ఆ ఇద్దరు మనష్యులు బేతేలుకు వెళ్లారు.
3 బేతేలులో వున్న ప్రవక్తలు ఎలీషా వద్దకు వచ్చి యిట్లన్నారు: “నేడు నీ యజమానిని నీ వద్దనుండి యెహోవా తీసుకొని పోవునన్న విషయం నీకు తెలుసా?”
“అవును. నాకు తెలుసు. ఆ విషయం మాటలాడకు.” అని ఎలీషా చెప్పాడు.
4 ఎలీషాతో ఏలీయా, “దయచేసి ఇక్కడ వుండుము. ఎందుకనగా నన్ను యెరికోకు వెళ్లమని యెహోవా ఆదేశించాడు” అని చెప్పాడు.
కాని ఎలీషా, “యెహోవా జీవంతోడు, నా జీవంతోడు నేను నిన్ను విడిచి వెళ్లను” అని చెప్పాడు. అందువల్ల వారిరువురు మనష్యులు యెరికోకు వెళ్లారు.
5 యెరికోలోనున్న ప్రవక్తల బృందం ఎలీషా వద్దకు వచ్చి యిట్లున్నారు. “నేడు నీ యజమానిని నీ వద్దనుండి యెహోవా తీసుకొని పోవునన్న విషయం నీకు తెలుసా?”
ఎలీషా, “అవును, నాకు తెలుసు. ఆ విషయమై మాటలాడకు” అని చెప్పాడు.
6 ఏలీయా ఎలీషాతో, “దయచేసి ఇక్కడ వుండుము. ఎందుకంటే నన్ను యోర్దాను నది వద్దకు వెళ్లమని యెహోవా ఆదేశించాడు” అనిచెప్పాడు.
ఎలీషా ఇలా అన్నాడు, “యెహోవా జీవంతోడు, నా జీవంతోడు నేను నిన్ను విడిచి వెళ్లను.” అందువల్ల ఆ ఇరువురు వెళ్లారు.
7 ప్రవక్తల బృందం నుండి ఏభై మంది మనుష్యులు వారిని అనుసరించారు. ఏలీయా ఎలీషాలు యోర్దాను నదివద్ద నిలిచారు. ఆ ఏభై మంది మనుష్యులు ఏలీయా ఎలీషాలకు దూరంగా నిలబడ్డారు. 8 ఏలీయా తన దుప్పటిని తీసి మడత పెట్టి నీటిమీద దానితో కొట్టాడు. నీళ్లు కుడికీ ఎడమకీ వేరు వేరయ్యాయి. అప్పుడు ఏలీయా ఎలీషాలు పొడినేల మీద నదిని దాటారు.
9 వారు నదిని దాటిన తర్వాత, ఏలీయా ఎలీషాతో, “నీనుండి యెహోవా నన్ను తీసుకొని పోవడానికి ముందు నీ కోసం నన్నేమి చేయమంటావు?” అని ఏలీయా అడిగాడు.
“నీ ఆత్మ రెండింతల భాగాముగా నామీదికి వచ్చునట్లు చేయి” అని ఎలీషా అడిగాడు.
10 ఏలీయా, “కష్టమైన విషయం నీవు అడిగావు. నన్ను నీనుండి తీసుకొని పోయేటప్పుడు నన్ను చూస్తూ వుంటే అది జరుగుతుంది. కాని నన్ను నీనుండి తీసుకొని పోయెటప్పుడు చూడకుంటే, అప్పుడు, అది జరగదు” అని చెప్పాడు.
దేవుడు ఏలీయాను పరలోకానికి తీసుకొని పోవుట
11 ఏలీయా ఎలీషాలు ఒకటిగా నడుస్తూ మాటాలాడుతూ వున్నారు. ఉన్నట్టుండి కొన్ని గుర్రాలు, ఒక అగ్నిరథం వచ్చి ఏలీయా ఎలీషాలను వేరు చేసాయి. ఆ గుర్రాలు మరియు రథం ఉన్నాయి. తర్వాత ఒక సుడిగాలి ద్వారా ఏలీయా పరలోకానికి తీసుకొని పోబడ్డాడు.
12 అది ఎలీషా చూచి, నా తండ్రి! “నా తండ్రి! ఇశ్రాయేలు రథం, దాని గుర్రపు సైనికులు నీవె”[a] అని అరిచాడు.

ఏలీయా కోసం ప్రవక్తలు అడుగుట
15 యెరికోలోని ప్రవక్తల బృందం ఎలీషాని చూడగానే, “ఏలీయా ఆత్మ ఇప్పుడు ఎలీషా మీద వున్నది” అన్నారు. ఎలీషాని కలుసుకునేందుకు వారు వచ్చారు. ఎలీషా ముందు వారు నేలకు తాకునట్లుగా నమస్కరించారు. 16 అతనితో వారు ఇట్లన్నారు: “ఇదుగో, మా వద్ద ఏభై మంది సజ్జనులున్నారు. వారు వెళ్లి నీ యజమానికోసం వెతకనిమ్ము. యెహోవా ఆత్మ ఒకవేళ ఏలీయాని పైకి తీసుకొని పోయి ఏ కొండమీదనో లేక ఏ లోయలోనో పడవేసి వుండవచ్చు.”
కాని ఎలీషా, “వద్దు ఏలీయాని వెతకడం కోసం మనుష్యుల్ని పంపవద్దు” అని చెప్పాడు.
17 ప్రవక్తల బృందం అతను ఇబ్బందిలో పడనంత వరకు ప్రార్థంచారు. అప్పుడు ఎలీషా, “బాగున్నది. ఏలీయాని వెతకడం కోసం మనుష్యుల్ని పంపించండి” అని చెప్పాడు.
ప్రవక్తల బృందం ఆ ఏభై మంది మనుష్యులను ఏలీయాకోసం పంపారు. మూడు రోజుల పాటు వారు వెతికారు. కాని వారు ఏలీయాను కనుగొనలేక పోయారు. 18 కనుక ఎలీషా నివసించుచున్న యెరికోకి వారు వెళ్లారు. ఏలీయాని తాము కనుగొనలేక పోయామని వాళ్లు అతనితో చెప్పారు. ఎలీషా, “మీరు వెళ్లవద్దని నేను చెప్పాను గదా” అన్నాడు.
ఎలీషా నీటిని మంచి నీళ్లుగా చేయుట
19 ఆ నగర పౌరులు ఎలీషాతో, “అయ్యా, ఈ నగరం చక్కని ప్రదేశంలో వున్నట్టు మీరు చూస్తున్నారు. కాని నీళ్లు మంచివి కావు. అందువల్లనే ఈ ప్రదేశంలో పంటలు పండవు” అని చెప్పారు.
20 “ఒక కొత్త పాత్ర తీసుకురండి. అందులో ఉప్పు వేయండి” అని ఎలీషా చెప్పాడు.
పౌరులు పాత్రను ఎలీషా వద్దకు తీసుకు వచ్చారు. 21 తర్వాత భూమినుండి నీరు ప్రవహించే ఆ స్థలం వద్దకు ఎలీషా వెళ్లాడు. ఎలీషా ఆ ఉప్పును నీటిలోకి విసిరాడు. “నేను ఈ నీటిని బాగు చేయుచున్నానని, ఇప్పటినుండి ఈ నీరు మరణము కలిగించదు. పంటలు పండనట్లుగా చేయదు” అని యెహోవా చెప్పాడు.
22 ఆ నీరు శుద్ధమయ్యింది. ఆ జలము నేటికీ మంచి నీరుగా ఉంది ఎలీషా చెప్పినట్లుగానే అది జరిగెను.
ఎలీషాని కొందరు పిల్లలు ఎగతాళి చేయుట
23 ఎలీషా ఆ నగరం నుండి బేతేలుకు వెళ్లాడు. ఎలీషా నగరం చేరడానికి కొండ ఎక్కుతూ ఉన్నాడు. నగరం నుండి కొందరు పిల్లలు బయటకి వస్తున్నారు. ఎలీషాని చూచి, వారు ఎగతాళి చేశారు. అతనితో వారు ఇట్లు అన్నారు: “ఓ బట్టతల మనిషీ, పైకి వెళ్లుము.”
24 ఎలీషా వెనుదిరిగి ఆ బాలురను చూశాడు. వారి పట్ల చెడు విషయాలు జరగాలని అతను యెహోవాని అర్థించాడు. తర్వాత అడవినుండి రెండు ఎలుగు బంట్లు వెలుపలికి వచ్చి ఆ బాలురను ఎదిరించాయి. ఆ ఎలుగుబంట్లు ఆ నలభై రెండు మంది పిల్లలను చీల్చివేశాయి.
25 ఎలీషా బేతేలు వీడి కర్మెలు పర్వతం వద్దకు వెళ్లాడు. మరియు అక్కడ నుండి, ఎలీషా షోమ్రోనుకు మరలి వెళ్లాడు.

2 And it came to pass, when Jehovah would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me as far as Beth-el. And Elisha said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el. 3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Beth-el came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that Jehovah will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. 5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that Jehovah will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me to the Jordan. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let [b]a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared [c]a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the [d]chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof!
And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan. 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is Jehovah, [e]the God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they were divided hither and thither; and Elisha went over.
15 And when the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho over against him saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him. 16 And they said unto him, Behold now, there are with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master, lest the Spirit of Jehovah hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send. 17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not. 18 And they came back to him, while he tarried at Jericho; and he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?
19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, we pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is bad, and the land [f]miscarrieth. 20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast salt therein, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or [g]miscarrying. 22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spake.
23 And he went up from thence unto Beth-el; and as he was going up by the way, there came forth young lads out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou baldhead; go up, thou baldhead. 24 And he looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Jehovah. And there came forth two she-bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two lads of them. 25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.
