Salomón pide sabiduría

(1 R. 3.3-15)

1 Salomón hijo de David fue afirmado en su reino, y Jehová su Dios estaba con él, y lo engrandeció sobremanera.

2 Y convocó Salomón a todo Israel, a jefes de millares y de centenas, a jueces, y a todos los príncipes de todo Israel, jefes de familias. 3 Y fue Salomón, y con él toda esta asamblea, al lugar alto que había en Gabaón; porque allí estaba el tabernáculo de reunión de Dios, que Moisés siervo de Jehová había hecho en el desierto. 4 Pero David había traído el arca de Dios de Quiriat-jearim al lugar que él le había preparado; porque él le había levantado una tienda en Jerusalén.(A) 5 Asimismo el altar de bronce(B) que había hecho Bezaleel hijo de Uri, hijo de Hur, estaba allí delante del tabernáculo de Jehová, al cual fue a consultar Salomón con aquella asamblea. 6 Subió, pues, Salomón allá delante de Jehová, al altar de bronce que estaba en el tabernáculo de reunión, y ofreció sobre él mil holocaustos.

7 Y aquella noche apareció Dios a Salomón y le dijo: Pídeme lo que quieras que yo te dé. 8 Y Salomón dijo a Dios: Tú has tenido con David mi padre gran misericordia, y a mí me has puesto por rey en lugar suyo. 9 Confírmese pues, ahora, oh Jehová Dios, tu palabra dada a David mi padre; porque tú me has puesto por rey sobre un pueblo numeroso como el polvo de la tierra.(C) 10 Dame ahora sabiduría y ciencia, para presentarme delante de este pueblo; porque ¿quién podrá gobernar a este tu pueblo tan grande? 11 Y dijo Dios a Salomón: Por cuanto hubo esto en tu corazón, y no pediste riquezas, bienes o gloria, ni la vida de los que te quieren mal, ni pediste muchos días, sino que has pedido para ti sabiduría y ciencia para gobernar a mi pueblo, sobre el cual te he puesto por rey, 12 sabiduría y ciencia te son dadas; y también te daré riquezas, bienes y gloria, como nunca tuvieron los reyes que han sido antes de ti, ni tendrán los que vengan después de ti. 13 Y desde el lugar alto que estaba en Gabaón, delante del tabernáculo de reunión, volvió Salomón a Jerusalén, y reinó sobre Israel.

Salomón comercia en caballos y en carros

(1 R. 10.26-29; 2 Cr. 9.25-28)

14 Y juntó Salomón carros y gente de a caballo; y tuvo mil cuatrocientos carros y doce mil jinetes,(D) los cuales puso en las ciudades de los carros y con el rey en Jerusalén. 15 Y acumuló el rey plata y oro en Jerusalén como piedras,(E) y cedro como cabrahígos de la Sefela en abundancia. 16 Y los mercaderes del rey compraban por contrato caballos y lienzos finos de Egipto para Salomón.(F) 17 Y subían y compraban en Egipto un carro por seiscientas piezas de plata, y un caballo por ciento cincuenta; y así compraban por medio de ellos para todos los reyes de los heteos, y para los reyes de Siria.

Solomon Goes Before Yahweh

1 Now (A)Solomon the son of David strengthened himself over his kingdom, and [a]Yahweh his God was with him and highly (B)exalted him.

2 And Solomon spoke to all Israel, (C)to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and to the judges and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’ households. 3 Then Solomon and all the assembly with him went to (D)the high place which was at Gibeon, (E)for God’s tent of meeting was there, which Moses the servant of Yahweh had made in the wilderness. 4 However, David had brought up (F)the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim [b]to (G)the place he had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem. 5 Now (H)the bronze altar, which Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, [c]was there before the tabernacle of Yahweh, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out. 6 And Solomon went up there before Yahweh to the bronze altar which was at the tent of meeting, and (I)offered one thousand burnt offerings on it.

7 (J)In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask what I should give to you.”

God Gives Wisdom to Solomon

8 Then Solomon said to God, “You have shown great lovingkindness to my father David, and (K)have made me king in his place. 9 Now, O Yahweh God, (L)let Your [d]promise to my father David [e]endure, for You have made me king over (M)a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 (N)Give me now wisdom and knowledge, (O)that I may go out and come in before this people, for who can do justice for this great people of Yours?” 11 (P)And God said to Solomon, “Because [f]you had this in your heart, and did not ask for riches, wealth, or glory, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may do justice for My people over whom I have made you king, 12 wisdom and knowledge have been given to you. And (Q)I will give you riches and wealth and glory, [g]such as none of the kings who were before you had nor those who will [h]come after you.” 13 (R)So Solomon went [i]from the high place which was at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem, and he reigned over Israel.

Solomon’s Chariots and Horsemen

14 (S)And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen. (T)And he had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in (U)the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 15 (V)The king also made (W)silver and gold as plentiful as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the [j]Shephelah. 16 Solomon’s import of (X)horses was from Egypt and from Kue; the king’s merchants procured them from Kue for a price. 17 And they [k]imported a chariot from Egypt for [l]600 shekels of silver and a horse for [m]150; and [n]by the same means they [o]exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.

1 King David’s son Solomon was now the undisputed ruler of Israel, for the Lord his God had made him a powerful monarch. 2-3 He summoned all the army officers and judges to Gibeon[a] as well as all the political and religious leaders of Israel. He led them up the hill to the old Tabernacle constructed by Moses, the Lord’s assistant, while he was in the wilderness. 4 (There was a later Tabernacle in Jerusalem, built by King David for the Ark of God when he removed it from Kiriath-jearim.) 5-6 The bronze altar made by Bezalel (son of Uri, son of Hur) still stood in front of the old Tabernacle, and now Solomon and those he had invited assembled themselves before it, as he sacrificed upon it 1,000 burnt offerings to the Lord.

7 That night God appeared to Solomon and told him, “Ask me for anything, and I will give it to you!”

8 Solomon replied, “O God, you have been so kind and good to my father David, and now you have given me the kingdom— 9 this is all I want! For you have fulfilled your promise to David my father and have made me king over a nation as full of people as the earth is full of dust! 10 Now give me wisdom and knowledge to rule them properly, for who is able to govern by himself such a great nation as this one of yours?”

11 God replied, “Because your greatest desire is to help your people, and you haven’t asked for personal wealth and honor, and you haven’t asked me to curse your enemies, and you haven’t asked for a long life, but for wisdom and knowledge to properly guide my people— 12 yes, I am giving you the wisdom and knowledge you asked for! And I am also giving you riches, wealth, and honor such as no other king has ever had before you! And there will never again be so great a king in all the world!”

13 Solomon then left the Tabernacle, returned down the hill, and went back to Jerusalem to rule Israel. 14 He built up a huge force of 1,400 chariots and recruited 12,000 cavalry to guard the cities where the chariots were garaged, though some, of course, were stationed at Jerusalem near the king. 15 During Solomon’s reign, silver and gold were as plentiful in Jerusalem as rocks on the road! And expensive cedar lumber was used like common sycamore! 16 Solomon sent horse traders to Egypt to purchase entire herds at wholesale prices. 17 At that time Egyptian chariots sold for $400 each and horses for $100, delivered at Jerusalem. Many of these were then resold to the kings of the Hittites and Syria.

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(A)(B)

1 Solomon son of David established(C) himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with(D) him and made him exceedingly great.(E)

2 Then Solomon spoke to all Israel(F)—to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families— 3 and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon,(G) for God’s tent of meeting(H) was there, which Moses(I) the Lord’s servant had made in the wilderness. 4 Now David had brought up the ark(J) of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent(K) for it in Jerusalem. 5 But the bronze altar(L) that Bezalel(M) son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired(N) of him there. 6 Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

7 That night God appeared(O) to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

8 Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me(P) king in his place. 9 Now, Lord God, let your promise(Q) to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.(R) 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead(S) this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth,(T) possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor,(U) such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.(V)”

13 Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel.

14 Solomon accumulated chariots(W) and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[a] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15 The king made silver and gold(X) as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[b]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 17 They imported a chariot(Y) from Egypt for six hundred shekels[c] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[d] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.
