8 Ora, fratelli, vi facciamo conoscere la grazia di Dio, che è stata data alle chiese della Macedonia,

2 e cioè, che in mezzo a molte prove di afflizione, l'abbondanza della loro gioia e la loro estrema povertà hanno abbondato nelle ricchezze della loro liberalità.

3 Poiché io rendo testimonianza che essi hanno dato volentieri, secondo le loro possibilità e anche al di là dei loro mezzi,

4 pregandoci con molta insistenza di accettare il dono e di partecipare a questa sovvenzione per i santi.

5 E non solo hanno fatto come speravamo, ma si sono dati prima al Signore e poi a noi per la volontà di Dio.

6 Cosí abbiamo esortato Tito che, come ha iniziato quest'opera di grazia fra di voi, cosí la porti a compimento.

7 Ma come abbondate in ogni cosa, nella fede, nella parola e nella conoscenza, in ogni premura e nel vostro amore verso di noi, cercate di abbondare anche in quest'opera di grazia.

8 Non lo dico per darvi un comando, ma per la sollecitudine degli altri e per mettere alla prova la schiettezza del vostro amore.

9 Voi conoscete infatti la grazia del Signor nostro Gesú Cristo il quale, essendo ricco, si è fatto povero per voi, affinché voi diventaste ricchi per mezzo della sua povertà.

10 A questo riguardo vi do un consiglio, perché questo è utile a voi, che fin dall'anno scorso non solo cominciaste a fare, ma anche a volere.

11 Ora compite anche il fare affinché, come vi è stata la prontezza del volere, cosí vi sia pure il compimento secondo le vostre possibilità.

12 Se infatti c'è la prontezza d'animo, uno è accettevole secondo quello che ha e non secondo ciò che non ha.

13 Però non si vuole mettere sotto pressione voi per dar sollievo agli altri,

14 ma solo seguire un criterio di uguaglianza; che al presente la vostra abbondanza supplisca alla loro indigenza, affinché anche la loro abbondanza sia impiegata a supplire alla vostra indigenza, perché vi sia uguaglianza,

15 secondo quel che sta scritto,: «Chi ne aveva raccolto molto, non ne ebbe di piú, e chi poco, non ne ebbe di meno».

16 Ora ringraziato sia Dio, che ha messo nel cuore di Tito la stessa sollecitudine per voi,

17 poiché non solo egli accettò l'esortazione, ma si mise in cammino per venire da voi, spontaneamente e con grande diligenza.

18 Con lui abbiamo mandato il fratello la cui lode nella predicazione dell'evangelo si è sparsa in tutte le chiese,

19 e non solo questo, ma è anche stato scelto dalle chiese per essere nostro compagno di viaggio con questo dono che noi amministriamo alla gloria del Signore stesso, come dimostrazione della prontezza del vostro animo,

20 evitando questo: che nessuno ci biasimi in questo generoso dono che è da noi amministrato,

21 avendo cura di agire bene non solo davanti al Signore, ma anche davanti agli uomini.

22 Or noi abbiamo mandato con loro il nostro fratello, che abbiamo provato spesse volte in molte cose e trovato essere zelante, ma ora è ancora piú zelante per la grande fiducia che ha in voi.

23 Quanto a Tito, egli è mio collaboratore e compagno d'opera in mezzo a voi quanto ai fratelli, essi sono apostoli delle chiese, gloria di Cristo.

24 Date dunque loro la prova del vostro amore e della ragione per cui ci gloriamo di voi anche davanti alla chiese.

8 (A)Ora, fratelli, vogliamo farvi conoscere la grazia che Dio ha concessa alle chiese di Macedonia, 2 perché nelle molte tribolazioni con cui sono state provate, la loro gioia incontenibile e la loro estrema povertà hanno sovrabbondato nelle ricchezze della loro generosità. 3 Infatti, io ne rendo testimonianza, hanno dato volentieri, secondo i loro mezzi, anzi, oltre i loro mezzi, 4 chiedendoci con molta insistenza il favore di partecipare alla sovvenzione destinata ai santi. 5 E non soltanto hanno contribuito come noi speravamo, ma prima hanno dato sé stessi al Signore e poi a noi, per la volontà di Dio.

6 Cosí, noi abbiamo esortato *Tito a completare, anche tra voi, quest'opera di grazia, come l'ha iniziata. 7 Ma siccome abbondate in ogni cosa, in fede, in parola, in conoscenza, in ogni zelo e nell'amore che avete per noi, vedete di abbondare anche in quest'opera di grazia. 8 Non lo dico per darvi un ordine, ma per mettere alla prova, con l'esempio dell'altrui premura, anche la sincerità del vostro amore. 9 Infatti voi conoscete la grazia del nostro Signore Gesú Cristo il quale, essendo ricco, si è fatto povero per voi, affinché, mediante la sua povertà, voi poteste diventar ricchi. 10 Io do, a questo proposito, un consiglio utile a voi che, dall'anno scorso, avete cominciato per primi non solo ad agire ma anche ad avere il desiderio di fare: 11 fate ora in modo di portare a termine il vostro agire; come foste pronti nel volere, siate tali anche nel realizzarlo secondo le vostre possibilità. 12 La buona volontà, quando c'è, è gradita in ragione di quello che uno possiede e non di quello che non ha. 13 Infatti non si tratta di mettere voi nel bisogno per dare sollievo agli altri, ma di seguire un principio di uguaglianza; 14 nelle attuali circostanze, la vostra abbondanza serve a supplire al loro bisogno, perché la loro abbondanza supplisca altresí al vostro bisogno, affinché ci sia uguaglianza, secondo quel che è scritto: 15 «Chi aveva raccolto molto non ne ebbe di troppo, e chi aveva raccolto poco, non ne ebbe troppo poco»[a].

16 (B)Ringraziato sia Dio che ha messo in cuore a Tito lo stesso zelo per voi; 17 infatti Tito non solo ha accettato la nostra esortazione, ma mosso da zelo anche maggiore si è spontaneamente messo in cammino per venire da voi. 18 Insieme a lui abbiamo mandato il fratello il cui servizio nel *vangelo è apprezzato in tutte le chiese; 19 non solo, ma egli è anche stato scelto dalle chiese come nostro compagno di viaggio in quest'opera di grazia, da noi amministrata per la gloria del Signore stesso e per dimostrare la prontezza dell'animo nostro. 20 Evitiamo cosí che qualcuno possa biasimarci per quest'abbondante colletta che noi amministriamo; 21 perché ci preoccupiamo di agire onestamente non solo davanti al Signore, ma anche di fronte agli uomini. 22 E con loro abbiamo mandato quel nostro fratello del quale spesso e in molte circostanze abbiamo sperimentato lo zelo; egli è ora piú zelante che mai per la grande fiducia che ha in voi. 23 Quanto a Tito, egli è mio compagno e collaboratore in mezzo a voi; quanto ai nostri fratelli, essi sono gli inviati delle chiese, e gloria di Cristo. 24 Date loro dunque, in presenza delle
chiese, la prova del vostro amore e mostrate loro che abbiamo ragione di essere fieri di voi.

Completing the Collection for the Saints

8 Now we make known to you, brothers and sisters,[a] the grace of God given to the churches of Macedonia, 2 that during a severe ordeal of suffering, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in the wealth[b] of their generosity. 3 For I testify, they gave according to their means and beyond their means. They did so voluntarily,[c] 4 begging us with great earnestness for the blessing and fellowship of helping[d] the saints. 5 And they did this not just as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us by the will of God. 6 Thus[e] we urged[f] Titus that, just as he had previously begun this work,[g] so also he should complete this act of kindness[h] for you. 7 But as you excel[i] in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, and in all eagerness and in the love from us that is in you[j]—make sure that you excel[k] in this act of kindness[l] too. 8 I am not saying this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love by comparison with the eagerness of others.[m] 9 For you know the grace[n] of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although he was rich, he became poor for your sakes, so that you by his poverty could become rich. 10 So here is my opinion on this matter: It is to your advantage, since you[o] made a good start last year both in your giving and your desire to give, 11 to finish what you started,[p] so that just as you wanted to do it eagerly,[q] you can also complete it according to your means.[r] 12 For if the eagerness is present, the gift itself[s] is acceptable according to whatever one has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For I do not say this so there would be relief for others and suffering for you, but as a matter of equality. 14 At the present time, your abundance will meet their need,[t] so that one day their abundance may also meet your need, and thus there may be equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered[u] much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[v]

The Mission of Titus

16 But thanks be to God who put in the heart of Titus the same devotion[w] I have for you, 17 because he not only accepted our request, but since he was very eager,[x] he is coming[y] to you of his own accord.[z] 18 And we are sending[aa] along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his work in spreading the gospel.[ab] 19 In addition,[ac] this brother[ad] has also been chosen by the churches as our traveling companion as we administer this generous gift[ae] to the glory of the Lord himself and to show our readiness to help.[af] 20 We did this[ag] as a precaution so that no one should blame us in regard to this generous gift we are administering. 21 For we are concerned about what is right not only before the Lord but also before men.[ah] 22 And we are sending[ai] with them our brother whom we have tested many times and found eager in many matters, but who now is much more eager than ever because of the great confidence he has in you. 23 If there is any question[aj] about Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; if there is any question about our brothers, they are messengers[ak] of the churches, a glory to Christ. 24 Therefore show[al] them openly before the churches the proof of your love and of our pride in you.[am]

Most likely, because of this difficulty, several early scribes, as well as most later ones (א C D F G Ψ [33] M lat), altered the text to read “your love for us” (so NIV; Grk ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐν ἡμῖν ἀγάπῃ [ex humōn en hēmin agapē]). The reading ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀγάπῃ (ex hēmōn en humin agapē) is found, however, in excellent and early witnesses (P46 B 0243 6 104 630 1175 1739 1881 co). As the harder reading it explains the rise of the other reading. What, then, is the force of “in the love from us that is in you”? Most likely, Paul is commending the Corinthians for excelling in deriving some inspiration from the apostles’ love for them.

Since an imperatival participle is more Hebraic in style, many scribes would not have understood the idiom as easily and would have been likely to change the participle to an imperative (so TCGNT 513-14). But there is no good reason why scribes would change the imperative into a participle. Thus, ἐνδεικνύμενοι is almost surely the wording of the original text.tn In the Greek text ἐνδεικνύμενοι (endeiknumenoi) is a present participle which is translated as an imperative verb (see BDF §468; ExSyn 650-52).

8 And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(A) churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(B) 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(C) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(D) in this service(E) to the Lord’s people.(F) 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6 So we urged(G) Titus,(H) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(I) this act of grace on your part. 7 But since you excel in everything(J)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(K) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

8 I am not commanding you,(L) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9 For you know the grace(M) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(N) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(O) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(P)

10 And here is my judgment(Q) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(R) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(S) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(T) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(U) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[b](V)

Titus Sent to Receive the Collection

16 Thanks be to God,(W) who put into the heart(X) of Titus(Y) the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.(Z) 18 And we are sending along with him the brother(AA) who is praised by all the churches(AB) for his service to the gospel.(AC) 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us(AD) as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.(AE) 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.(AF)

22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus,(AG) he is my partner(AH) and co-worker(AI) among you; as for our brothers,(AJ) they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you,(AK) so that the churches can see it.
