Sennacherib Invades Judah

32 After these [a]acts of faithfulness (A)Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, and [b]thought to break into them for himself. 2 Then Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he had set his face to make war on Jerusalem, 3 and he took counsel with his commanders and his warriors to stop up the supply of water from the springs which were outside the city, and they helped him. 4 So many people gathered (B)and stopped up all the springs and (C)the stream which flowed in the midst of the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?” 5 And he strengthened himself and (D)rebuilt all the wall that had been broken down and [c]erected towers on it, and built (E)another outside wall and strengthened the [d](F)Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in great number. 6 He also put military commanders over the people and gathered them to him in the square at the city gate, and (G)spoke to their hearts, saying, 7 “(H)Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be dismayed because of the king of Assyria nor because of all the multitude that is with him; (I)for the one with us is greater than the one with him. 8 With him is only (J)an arm of flesh, but (K)with us is Yahweh our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people were sustained by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

Sennacherib Reproaches Yahweh

9 After this (L)Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem while he was [e]besieging Lachish with all his forces with him, against Hezekiah king of Judah and against all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying, 10 “Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, ‘On what are you trusting that you are remaining in Jerusalem under siege? 11 Is not Hezekiah inciting you to give yourselves over to die by hunger and by thirst, saying, “Yahweh our God will deliver us from the [f]hand of the king of Assyria”? 12 (M)Has not the same Hezekiah taken away His high places and His altars, and said to Judah and [g]Jerusalem, “You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall offer offerings up in smoke”? 13 Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? (N)Were the gods of the nations of the lands able at all to deliver their land from my hand? 14 (O)Who was there among all the gods of these nations which my fathers devoted to destruction, who could deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand? 15 So now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or incite you like this, and do not believe him, for (P)no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand?’”

16 His servants spoke further against Yahweh God and against His servant Hezekiah. 17 He also wrote letters to [h]reproach Yahweh, the God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, “(Q)As the gods of the nations of the lands [i]have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.” 18 (R)And they called this out with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to instill fear and terrify them, so that they might capture the city. 19 And they spoke [j]of the God of Jerusalem as of (S)the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of men’s hands.

Yahweh Wipes Out the Men of Assyria

20 But King Hezekiah and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed about this and cried out to heaven. 21 And Yahweh sent an angel who wiped out every mighty man of valor, ruler, and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned [k]in shame to his own land. And he entered the house of his god, and some of [l]his own children caused him to fall there by the sword. 22 So Yahweh (T)saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others, and He [m]guided them on every side. 23 And (U)many were bringing presents to Yahweh at Jerusalem and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that (V)he was lifted up in the sight of all nations thereafter.

24 (W)In those days Hezekiah became sick to the point of death; and he prayed to Yahweh, and [n]Yahweh spoke to him and gave him a miraculous sign. 25 But Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit [o]he received, (X)because his heart was [p]proud; (Y)therefore wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 However, (Z)Hezekiah [q]humbled the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

27 Now Hezekiah had abundant riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and all kinds of desirable articles, 28 storehouses also for the produce of grain, wine, and oil, stalls for all kinds of cattle, and [r]sheepfolds for the flocks. 29 He also made cities for himself and acquired flocks and herds in abundance, for (AA)God had given him exceedingly abundant [s]wealth. 30 And it was Hezekiah who (AB)stopped the upper outlet of the waters of (AC)Gihon and directed them to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah succeeded in all that he did. 31 Even in the matter of (AD)the envoys of the rulers of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of (AE)the miraculous sign that had happened in the land, God left him alone only (AF)to test him, that He might know all that was in his heart.

32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his deeds of lovingkindness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 33 So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the [t]upper section of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem (AG)honored him at his death. And Manasseh his son became king in his place.

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem(A)(B)

32 After all that Hezekiah had so faithfully done, Sennacherib(C) king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, thinking to conquer them for himself. 2 When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to wage war against Jerusalem,(D) 3 he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him. 4 They gathered a large group of people who blocked all the springs(E) and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings[a] of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said. 5 Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall(F) and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the terraces[b](G) of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons(H) and shields.

6 He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words: 7 “Be strong and courageous.(I) Do not be afraid or discouraged(J) because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.(K) 8 With him is only the arm of flesh,(L) but with us(M) is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”(N) And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.

9 Later, when Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces were laying siege to Lachish,(O) he sent his officers to Jerusalem with this message for Hezekiah king of Judah and for all the people of Judah who were there:

10 “This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are you basing your confidence,(P) that you remain in Jerusalem under siege? 11 When Hezekiah says, ‘The Lord our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria,’ he is misleading(Q) you, to let you die of hunger and thirst. 12 Did not Hezekiah himself remove this god’s high places and altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar(R) and burn sacrifices on it’?

13 “Do you not know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the other lands? Were the gods of those nations ever able to deliver their land from my hand?(S) 14 Who of all the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed has been able to save his people from me? How then can your god deliver you from my hand? 15 Now do not let Hezekiah deceive(T) you and mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver(U) his people from my hand or the hand of my predecessors.(V) How much less will your god deliver you from my hand!”

16 Sennacherib’s officers spoke further against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah. 17 The king also wrote letters(W) ridiculing(X) the Lord, the God of Israel, and saying this against him: “Just as the gods(Y) of the peoples of the other lands did not rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand.” 18 Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city. 19 They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of human hands.(Z)

20 King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer(AA) to heaven about this. 21 And the Lord sent an angel,(AB) who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.(AC)

22 So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them[c] on every side. 23 Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the Lord and valuable gifts(AD) for Hezekiah king of Judah. From then on he was highly regarded by all the nations.

Hezekiah’s Pride, Success and Death(AE)

24 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the Lord, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign.(AF) 25 But Hezekiah’s heart was proud(AG) and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the Lord’s wrath(AH) was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 Then Hezekiah repented(AI) of the pride of his heart, as did the people of Jerusalem; therefore the Lord’s wrath did not come on them during the days of Hezekiah.(AJ)

27 Hezekiah had very great wealth and honor,(AK) and he made treasuries for his silver and gold and for his precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuables. 28 He also made buildings to store the harvest of grain, new wine and olive oil; and he made stalls for various kinds of cattle, and pens for the flocks. 29 He built villages and acquired great numbers of flocks and herds, for God had given him very great riches.(AL)

30 It was Hezekiah who blocked(AM) the upper outlet of the Gihon(AN) spring and channeled(AO) the water down to the west side of the City of David. He succeeded in everything he undertook. 31 But when envoys were sent by the rulers of Babylon(AP) to ask him about the miraculous sign(AQ) that had occurred in the land, God left him to test(AR) him and to know everything that was in his heart.

32 The other events of Hezekiah’s reign and his acts of devotion are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 Hezekiah rested with his ancestors and was buried on the hill where the tombs of David’s descendants are. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem honored him when he died. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.

Assyria Attacks Judah(A)

32 After Hezekiah ·did all these things to serve the Lord [accomplished these faithful acts], Sennacherib king of Assyria ·came and attacked [invaded] Judah. He and his army ·surrounded and attacked [besieged] the ·strong, walled [fortified] cities, ·hoping [intending] to take them for himself. 2 Hezekiah ·knew [realized] that Sennacherib had come to Jerusalem to attack it. 3 So Hezekiah and his ·officers [officials] and army ·commanders [officers] decided to ·cut off [stop the flow of] the water from the springs outside the city. So they helped Hezekiah. 4 Many people ·came [gathered] and ·cut off [stopped up] all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. They said, “Why should the king of Assyria come and find ·plenty of [abundant] water?” 5 Then Hezekiah ·made Jerusalem stronger. There is a greater ·power [one] with us than with him. 8 He only has ·men [human strength; L an arm of flesh], but we have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” The people were encouraged by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 After this King Sennacherib of Assyria and all his army ·surrounded and attacked [besieged] Lachish. Then he sent his ·officers [officials; servants] to Jerusalem with this message for King Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah in Jerusalem:

10 Sennacherib king of Assyria says this: “·You have nothing to trust in [L On what are you trusting…?] to help you. ·It is no use for you to [L Why do you…?] stay in Jerusalem under ·attack [siege]. 11 Hezekiah says to you, ‘The Lord our God will ·save [rescue; T deliver] us from the hand of the king of Assyria,’ but he is ·fooling [misleading; deceiving] you, condemning you to death from hunger and thirst. 12 ·Hezekiah [L Did not Hezekiah…?] himself removed your Lord’s ·places of worship [L high places; 11:15] and altars. 16 Sennacherib’s ·officers [officials] ·said worse things against [further insulted/mocked] the Lord God and his servant Hezekiah. 17 King Sennacherib also wrote letters ·insulting [mocking] the Lord, the God of Israel. They spoke against him, saying, “The gods of the other nations could not ·save [rescue; T deliver] their people from me. In the same way Hezekiah’s ·god [God] won’t be able to ·save [rescue; T deliver] his people from me.” 18 Then the king’s ·officers [officials] shouted in ·Hebrew [L the language of Judah], calling out to the people of Jerusalem who were on the city wall. The ·officers [officials] wanted to ·scare [frighten and terrify] the people so they could capture Jerusalem. 19 They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as though he were like the gods the people of the ·world [earth] worshiped, which are made by human hands.

God Rescues Judah(B)

20 King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz ·prayed [cried out to] to heaven about this. 21 Then the Lord sent an angel who ·killed [destroyed; annihilated] all the soldiers, ·leaders [commanders], and officers in the ·camp [army] of the king of Assyria. So the king went back to his own country in ·disgrace [shame; humiliation]. When he went into the ·temple [L house] of his god, some of his own ·sons [children] killed him with a sword.

22 So the Lord ·saved [rescued; T delivered] Hezekiah and the people in Jerusalem from [L the hand of] Sennacherib king of Assyria and from all other people. He ·took care of [guided; or gave rest to] them on every side. 23 Many people brought ·gifts [offerings] for the Lord to Jerusalem, and they also brought ·valuable gifts [precious things] to King Hezekiah of Judah. From then on all the nations ·respected [looked up to; exalted] Hezekiah.

Hezekiah Dies(C)

24 At that time Hezekiah became so sick he almost died. When he prayed to the Lord, the Lord spoke to him and gave him a ·sign [miraculous sign; C God gave him a sign that he would live for another fifteen years; Is. 38:1–8]. 25 But Hezekiah ·did not thank God for his kindness [did not respond to/was not grateful for the kindness shown him], because he was so proud. So ·the Lord was angry with [L wrath came upon] him and the people of Judah and Jerusalem. 26 ·But later [Then] Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem ·were sorry and stopped being proud [humbled themselves], so ·the Lord did not punish [L the wrath of the Lord did not come on] them while Hezekiah was alive.

27 Hezekiah had ·many riches [great wealth] and much honor. He made treasuries for his silver, gold, ·gems [precious stones], spices, shields, and other valuable things. 28 He built ·storage buildings [storehouses] for grain, new wine, and olive oil and stalls for all the cattle and pens for the sheep. 29 He also built many towns. And Hezekiah ·was successful [prospered] in everything he did. 31 But one time the ·leaders [officials] of Babylon sent messengers to Hezekiah, asking him about a ·strange [miraculous] sign that had happened in the land [2 Kin. 20:12–19; Is. 39:1–8]. When they came, God left Hezekiah ·alone [to himself] to test him so he could know everything that was in Hezekiah’s heart.

Hezekiah Dies(D)

32 Hezekiah’s ·love for God [acts of devotion] and the ·other things [rest of the events/acts] he did as king are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. This is in the ·book [scroll] of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 Hezekiah ·died [L lay down/T slept with his fathers/ancestors] and was buried on a hill, where the ·graves [tombs] of David’s ·ancestors [descendants] are. All the people of Judah and Jerusalem honored Hezekiah when he died, and his son Manasseh became king in his place.

Sanherib valt Juda aan

32 Met al deze dingen bewees Hizkia dat hij trouw was aan de Heer. Toen viel koning Sanherib van Assur Juda aan. Hij omsingelde de steden met muren en torens. Hij dacht dat hij die wel zou kunnen veroveren. 2 Toen Hizkia zag dat Sanherib Jeruzalem wilde aanvallen, 3 overlegde hij met de leiders en aanvoerders. Hij wilde met hun hulp alle waterbronnen buiten de stad dichtstoppen. Zij hielpen hem met dat plan. 4 Ze riepen een groot aantal mensen bij elkaar. Samen stopten ze alle bronnen in de streek dicht. Ook de beek die daar stroomde werd afgedamd. Zo zou het leger van Assur geen water hebben. 5 Hizkia herstelde de kapotte plaatsen in de muur. Ook bouwde hij torens op de muur. Rondom deze muur bouwde hij nóg een muur, en hij verstevigde de muur bij de Millo-burcht in de 'Stad van David'. Verder maakte hij grote aantallen speren en schilden.

6 Hij wees legeraanvoerders aan en verzamelde hen op het plein bij de stadspoort. Daar sprak hij hun moed in. 7 Hij zei: "Wees vastberaden en vol vertrouwen. Laat je niet bang maken door de koning van Assur en zijn grote leger. Hij is wel machtig, maar wij zijn machtiger. 8 Híj heeft wel een machtig leger, maar wíj hebben een machtige God. En onze Heer God zal ons helpen en voor ons strijden." Daardoor kreeg het hele volk weer moed.

9 Koning Sanherib was zelf met zijn leger bij Lachis. Hij stuurde aanvoerders naar Jeruzalem. Ze brachten koning Hizkia en alle Judeeërs in Jeruzalem de volgende boodschap: 10 "Dit zegt koning Sanherib van Assur: Jullie zijn helemaal omsingeld. Waarop vertrouwen jullie nog? 11 Laat je niet voor de gek houden door Hizkia. Hij zegt dat jullie God jullie zal redden van de koning van Assur. Maar zo laat hij jullie van honger en dorst sterven! 12 Hizkia heeft toch alle altaren weggehaald? Hij heeft toch gezegd dat jullie maar bij één altaar offers mogen brengen en God mogen aanbidden? 13 Weten jullie dan niet wat ik en mijn voorvaders hebben gedaan met de volken van alle andere landen? Hebben de goden van die volken hen soms uit mijn macht kunnen redden? 14 Wie van al die goden heeft zijn volk gered? Jullie God zal jullie ook niet kunnen redden! 15 Laat Hizkia jullie dus niet bedriegen. Geloof hem niet. Want als geen enkele god van geen enkel land zijn volk uit mijn macht heeft kunnen redden, dan kan jullie God dat óók niet!" 16 En zo zeiden ze nog veel meer om Hizkia en God te beledigen. 17 Sanherib had ook een brief geschreven waarin hij de Heer, de God van Israël, beledigde. Ook daarin stond: "De God van Hizkia zal zijn volk niet uit mijn macht kunnen redden. Want dat konden de goden van de andere volken ook niet." 18 En ze riepen hun beledigingen luid in het Judees tegen de mannen op de muur, om hen bang te maken. Want ze hoopten daardoor de stad te kunnen veroveren. 19 Ze dachten dat de God van Jeruzalem net zo was als de goden van de andere volken: een beeld dat door mensen is gemaakt. 20 Maar koning Hizkia en de profeet Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz, baden tot God om hulp. 21 Toen stuurde de Heer een engel die het hele leger van de koning van Assur doodde. Alle aanvoerders en mannen werden gedood. Tot zijn schande moest de koning toen teruggaan naar zijn land. En toen hij op een keer de tempel van zijn god binnenging, staken zijn eigen zonen hem met hun zwaard dood.

22 Zo redde de Heer koning Hizkia en de bewoners van Jeruzalem uit de macht van koning Sanherib en alle anderen. Hij beschermde hen aan alle kanten en gaf hun rust. 23 Van alle kanten brachten de mensen geschenken naar Jeruzalem voor de Heer en voor koning Hizkia. Vanaf die tijd hadden alle volken veel ontzag voor koning Hizkia.

Hizkia wordt trots

24 In die tijd werd Hizkia ernstig ziek. Toen bad hij tot de Heer en Hij deed een wonder voor hem. 25 Maar in plaats van de Heer daar dankbaar voor te zijn, werd Hizkia trots. Daarom werd de Heer boos op hem, op Juda en op Jeruzalem. 26 Toen kreeg Hizkia er veel spijt van dat hij zo trots geworden was. Ook de bewoners van Jeruzalem hadden spijt over wat ze verkeerd gedaan hadden. Daarom strafte de Heer hen niet zolang Hizkia nog leefde.

27 Hizkia was heel erg rijk en geëerd. Hij bouwde schatkamers voor al het zilver en goud, de edelstenen, specerijen, schilden en kostbare voorwerpen. 28 Ook bouwde hij opslagplaatsen voor graan, wijn en olijf-olie, en stallen voor het vee. 29 Hij bouwde wachttorens en muren. God gaf hem ook heel veel vee. 30 En het was Hizkia die het water van de Gihon afdamde en rechtstreeks naar de 'Stad van David' leidde. Hizkia had succes bij alles wat hij deed.

31 Op een dag stuurde de koning van Babel mannen naar koning Hizkia. De koning van Babel had gehoord dat Hizkia ernstig ziek geweest was. Zijn mannen moesten Hizkia vragen door welk wonder hij weer genezen was. Toen verliet God Hizkia, want Hij wilde weten hoe Hizkia werkelijk was.[a] Daarom stelde Hij hem hiermee op de proef.

32 De rest van wat Hizkia allemaal heeft gedaan,[b] en alles wat hij voor God heeft gedaan, is opgeschreven door de profeet Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz. Het staat in de boeken met de geschiedenis van de koningen van Juda en Israël. 33 Hizkia stierf en werd begraven. Zijn graf lag in het hoogste deel van de helling waar de koningen uit de familie van David begraven liggen. Heel Juda en de bewoners van Jeruzalem bewezen hem eer bij zijn dood. Zijn zoon Manasse werd na hem koning van Juda.
