23 In the seventh year Jehoiada ·decided to do something [summoned his courage/strength]. He made an ·agreement [covenant; pact] with the ·commanders [officers] of the groups of a hundred men: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zicri. 2 They went throughout Judah and ·gathered [summoned; assembled] the Levites from all the towns, and they gathered the ·leaders [heads] of the ·families [clans] of ·Judah [L Israel; 12:6]. Then they went to Jerusalem. 3 All the people together made an ·agreement [covenant; pact] with the king in the ·Temple [L house] of God.
Jehoiada said to them, “The king’s son will ·rule [reign], as the Lord ·promised [has spoken] about David’s ·descendants [sons]. 4 Now this is what you must do: You priests and Levites ·go [or who go…] on duty on the Sabbath. A third of you will ·guard the doors [be gatekeepers]. 5 A third of you will be at the king’s ·palace [L house], and a third of you will be at the Foundation Gate. All the other people will stay in the courtyards of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. 6 Don’t let anyone ·come into [enter] the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord except the priests and Levites ·who serve [on duty]. They may come because they ·have been made ready to serve the Lord [are holy/consecrated/set apart], but all the others must ·do the job the Lord has given them [obey the Lord’s instructions]. 7 The Levites must ·stay near [surround] the king, each man with his weapon in his hand. If anyone tries to enter the ·Temple [L house], kill him. Stay close to the king when he goes in and when he goes out.”

8 The Levites and all the people of Judah obeyed everything Jehoiada the priest ·had commanded [ordered]. He did not ·excuse [dismiss; release] anyone from the ·groups [divisions] of the priests. So each commander took his men who came on duty on the Sabbath ·with [as well as] those who went off duty on the Sabbath. 9 Jehoiada gave the ·commanders [officers] of a hundred men the spears and the large and small shields that had belonged to King David and that were kept in the ·Temple [L house] of God. 10 Then Jehoiada ·told the soldiers where to stand [stationed/positioned all the people] with weapon in hand. There were guards from the ·south [L right] side of the ·Temple [L house] to the ·north [L left] side. They stood by the altar and the ·Temple [L house] and around the king.
11 Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him and gave him a copy of the ·agreement [covenant; treaty]. Then they ·appointed [anointed] him king and shouted, “Long live the king!”
12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and ·praising [cheering] the king, she ·went to them [joined the crowd] at the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. 13 She looked, and there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance [C a symbolic place of authority]. The ·officers [commanders] and the trumpeters were standing beside him, and all the people of the land were ·happy [rejoicing] and blowing trumpets. The singers were playing musical instruments and leading the ·praises [celebration]. Then Athaliah tore her clothes [C a sign of mourning or distress] and screamed, “·Traitors! Traitors! [Treason! Treason!]”
14 Jehoiada the priest sent out the ·commanders [officers] of a hundred men, who ·led [were in charge of] the army. He said, “Surround her with soldiers and take her out of the ·Temple [L house] area. Kill with a sword anyone who follows her.” He had said, “Don’t put Athaliah to death in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord.” 15 So they ·caught [seized] her ·when she came [or and took her] to the entrance of the Horse Gate near the ·palace [L house]. There they put her to death.
16 Then Jehoiada made an ·agreement [covenant; treaty] with the people and the king that they would be ·the Lord’s special people [L a people for the Lord]. 17 All the people went to the ·Temple [L house] of Baal and tore it down, ·smashing [demolishing] the altars and ·idols [images]. They killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars.
18 Then Jehoiada chose the priests, who were Levites, to be ·responsible for [in charge of] the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. David had ·given [assigned] them duties in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. They were to ·offer [sacrifice] the burnt offerings [Lev. 1:1–17] to the Lord as the ·Teachings [law] of Moses commanded, and they were to ·offer [sacrifice] them with much joy and singing as David had ·commanded [ordered; instructed]. 19 Jehoiada ·put [stationed; positioned] guards at the gates of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord so that anyone who was ·unclean [defiled; C ritually] in any way could not enter.
20 Jehoiada took with him the ·commanders [officers] of a hundred men, the ·important men [nobles], the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land to ·take [lead; escort] the king out of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. They went through the Upper Gate into the ·palace [L house], and then they seated the king on the throne. 21 So all the people of the land ·were very happy [rejoiced], and Jerusalem ·had peace [was quiet], because Athaliah had been put to death with the sword.

23 In the seventh year Jehoiada showed his strength. He made a covenant with the commanders of units of a hundred: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zikri. 2 They went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites(A) and the heads of Israelite families from all the towns. When they came to Jerusalem, 3 the whole assembly made a covenant(B) with the king at the temple of God.
Jehoiada said to them, “The king’s son shall reign, as the Lord promised concerning the descendants of David.(C) 4 Now this is what you are to do: A third of you priests and Levites who are going on duty on the Sabbath are to keep watch at the doors, 5 a third of you at the royal palace and a third at the Foundation Gate, and all the others are to be in the courtyards of the temple of the Lord. 6 No one is to enter the temple of the Lord except the priests and Levites on duty; they may enter because they are consecrated, but all the others are to observe(D) the Lord’s command not to enter.[a] 7 The Levites are to station themselves around the king, each with weapon in hand. Anyone who enters the temple is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
8 The Levites and all the men of Judah did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered.(E) Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—for Jehoiada the priest had not released any of the divisions.(F) 9 Then he gave the commanders of units of a hundred the spears and the large and small shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of God. 10 He stationed all the men, each with his weapon in his hand, around the king—near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
11 Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; they presented him with a copy(G) of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him and shouted, “Long live the king!”
12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and cheering the king, she went to them at the temple of the Lord. 13 She looked, and there was the king,(H) standing by his pillar(I) at the entrance. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and musicians with their instruments were leading the praises. Then Athaliah tore her robes and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”
14 Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops, and said to them: “Bring her out between the ranks[b] and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “Do not put her to death at the temple of the Lord.” 15 So they seized her as she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate(J) on the palace grounds, and there they put her to death.
16 Jehoiada then made a covenant(K) that he, the people and the king[c] would be the Lord’s people. 17 All the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols and killed(L) Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.
18 Then Jehoiada placed the oversight of the temple of the Lord in the hands of the Levitical priests,(M) to whom David had made assignments in the temple,(N) to present the burnt offerings of the Lord as written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and singing, as David had ordered. 19 He also stationed gatekeepers(O) at the gates of the Lord’s temple so that no one who was in any way unclean might enter.
20 He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people and all the people of the land and brought the king down from the temple of the Lord. They went into the palace through the Upper Gate(P) and seated the king on the royal throne. 21 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword.(Q)

23 La septième année[a], le prêtre Yehoyada s’arma de courage et fit venir les chefs des « centaines[b] » : Azaria, fils de Yeroham, Ismaël, fils de Yohanân, Azaria, fils d’Obed, Maaséya, fils d’Adaya, et Elishaphath, fils de Zikri, et il fit un pacte avec eux. 2 Les officiers parcoururent le royaume de Juda et rassemblèrent les lévites de toutes les villes de Juda et les chefs des groupes familiaux d’Israël, puis ils revinrent avec eux à Jérusalem, 3 et toute cette assemblée conclut une alliance avec le jeune roi dans le Temple. Yehoyada leur dit : Voici le fils du roi, il régnera conformément à la promesse que l’Eternel a faite au sujet des descendants de David[c]. 4 Voici ce que vous allez faire : ce prochain sabbat, l’une de vos compagnies sera de service ; en qualité de prêtres et de lévites, un tiers d’entre eux gardera les entrées, 5 un autre tiers surveillera le palais royal, la troisième section se tiendra en faction à la porte de Yesod. Tout le peuple occupera le parvis du temple de l’Eternel. 6 Personne ne doit pénétrer dans le temple de l’Eternel, excepté les prêtres et les lévites de service qui pourront y entrer puisqu’ils sont saints. Tout le monde doit respecter le rituel prescrit par l’Eternel. 7 Les lévites entoureront le roi de tous les côtés, chacun les armes à la main. Quiconque voudra forcer l’accès au Temple sera mis à mort. Vous accompagnerez le roi dans toutes ses allées et venues.
8 Les lévites et tous les Judéens exécutèrent ponctuellement tous les ordres que le prêtre Yehoyada leur avait donnés. Ils prirent chacun leurs hommes, ceux qui commençaient leur service le jour du repos et ceux qui le terminaient ce jour-là, car le prêtre Yehoyada n’avait donné congé à aucune des classes de lévites. 9 Le prêtre Yehoyada remit aux chefs de « centaines » les lances ainsi que les grands et les petits boucliers du roi David qui se trouvaient dans le Temple. 10 Il posta tous les hommes en demi-cercle, chacun son javelot à la main, en demi-cercle devant l’édifice, depuis l’angle sud-est du Temple jusqu’à l’angle nord-est, près de l’autel, de manière à entourer le roi. 11 Alors on fit sortir le fils du roi, on plaça la couronne sur sa tête et on lui remit l’acte de l’alliance. On le sacra roi : Yehoyada et ses fils l’oignirent d’huile et ils crièrent : Vive le roi !
La mort d’Athalie
12 Athalie entendit le bruit du peuple qui accourait et acclamait le roi. Elle vint au milieu de la foule au temple de l’Eternel, 13 regarda et vit le roi qui se tenait debout sur son estrade à l’entrée du sanctuaire. Il était entouré des capitaines de la garde et des joueurs de trompette. Toute la population exultait de joie tandis qu’on sonnait des trompettes et que les musiciens, accompagnés de leurs instruments, dirigeaient les chants de louanges. A ce spectacle, Athalie déchira ses vêtements et dit : C’est un complot ! C’est un complot !
14 Alors le prêtre Yehoyada fit avancer les chefs de « centaines » qui commandaient l’armée et leur ordonna : Faites-la sortir de l’enceinte du Temple entre les rangs ! Et si quelqu’un la suit, qu’il soit mis à mort. Car, dit le prêtre, ne la mettez pas à mort dans l’enceinte du temple de l’Eternel.
15 Ils s’emparèrent donc d’Athalie et la menèrent vers le palais royal par l’entrée de la porte des chevaux : c’est là qu’ils la mirent à mort.

16 Yehoyada conclut entre lui, tout le peuple et le roi une alliance qui les engageait à être le peuple de l’Eternel. 17 Toute la population se rendit au temple de Baal et le démolit. On mit en pièces ses autels et ses statues, et l’on tua devant les autels Mattân, le prêtre de Baal. 18 Yehoyada confia la surveillance du temple de l’Eternel aux prêtres-lévites que David avait répartis pour le service du temple de l’Eternel, afin d’offrir des holocaustes à l’Eternel, conformément aux prescriptions de la Loi de Moïse, dans la joie, et en chantant les cantiques composés par David. 19 Il installa les portiers aux entrées du temple de l’Eternel pour en interdire l’entrée à toute personne rituellement impure, pour quelque raison que ce soit. 20 Il rassembla les chefs de « centaines », les notables, les dirigeants du peuple, ainsi que toute la population du pays, et il fit descendre le roi du Temple au palais royal par la porte supérieure. On installa le roi sur le trône du royaume. 21 Tout le peuple du pays était dans la joie, et le calme régnait dans la ville maintenant qu’on avait fait mourir Athalie.

3 Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said to them, “Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the Lord has (F)said of the sons of David. 4 This is what you shall do: One-third of you (G)entering on the Sabbath, of the priests and the Levites, shall be keeping watch over the doors; 5 one-third shall be at the king’s house; and one-third at the Gate of the Foundation. All the people shall be in the courts of the house of the Lord. 6 But let no one come into the house of the Lord except the priests and (H)those of the Levites who serve. They may go in, for they are holy; but all the people shall keep the watch of the Lord. 7 And the Levites shall surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes into the house, let him be put to death. You are to be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.”
8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each man took his men who were to be on duty on the Sabbath, with those who were going off duty on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed (I)the divisions. 9 And Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and the large and small (J)shields which had belonged to King David, that were in the temple of God. 10 Then he set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and by the temple, all around the king. 11 And they brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, (K)gave him the [a]Testimony, and made him king. 12 Now when (M)Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people in the temple of the Lord. 13 When she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, also the singers with musical instruments, and (N)those who led in praise. So Athaliah tore her clothes and said, (O)“Treason! Treason!”
14 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, “Take her outside under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her.” For the priest had said, “Do not kill her in the house of the Lord.”
15 So they seized her; and she went by way of the entrance (P)of the Horse Gate into the king’s house, and they killed her there.
16 Then Jehoiada made a (Q)covenant between himself, the people, and the king, that they should be the Lord’s people. 17 And all the people went to the [b]temple of Baal, and tore it down. They broke in pieces its altars and images, and (R)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the Lord to the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had (S)assigned in the house of the Lord, to offer the burnt offerings of the Lord, as it is written in the (T)Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was established by David. 19 And he set the (U)gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord, so that no one who was in any way unclean should enter.
20 (V)Then he took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the Lord; and they went through the Upper Gate to the king’s house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom. 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet, for they had slain Athaliah with the sword.
