Ahaziah’s Reign

22 The inhabitants of Jerusalem made his youngest son Ahaziah king as his successor, for the troops who came with the Arabs to the camp had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram reigned as king of Judah.(A) 2 Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he began to reign; he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri.(B) 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor in doing wickedly. 4 He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of Ahab, for after the death of his father they were his counselors, to his ruin. 5 He even followed their advice and went with Jehoram son of King Ahab of Israel to make war against King Hazael of Aram at Ramoth-gilead. The Arameans wounded Joram,(C) 6 and he returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that he had received at Ramah, when he fought King Hazael of Aram. And Ahaziah son of King Jehoram of Judah went down to see Joram son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick.(D)

7 But it was ordained by God that the downfall of Ahaziah should come about through his going to visit Joram. For when he came there he went out with Jehoram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab.(E) 8 When Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he met the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers, who attended Ahaziah, and he killed them.(F) 9 He searched for Ahaziah, who was captured while hiding in Samaria and was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with all his heart.” And the house of Ahaziah had no one able to rule the kingdom.(G)

Athaliah Seizes the Throne

10 Now when Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother, saw that her son was dead, she set about to destroy all the royal family of the house of Judah.(H) 11 But Jehoshabeath, the king’s daughter, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s children who were about to be killed; she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram and wife of the priest Jehoiada—because she was a sister of Ahaziah—hid him from Athaliah, so that she did not kill him; 12 he remained with them six years hidden in the house of God, while Athaliah reigned over the land.

His mother’s name was (E)Athaliah the [b]granddaughter of Omri. 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother advised him to do wickedly. 4 Therefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord, like the house of Ahab; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction. 5 He also followed their advice, and went with [c]Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram. 6 (F)Then he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which he had received at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And [d]Azariah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

7 His going to Joram (G)was God’s occasion for Ahaziah’s [e]downfall; for when he arrived, (H)he went out with [f]Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, (I)whom the Lord had anointed to [g]cut off the house of Ahab. 8 And it happened, when Jehu was (J)executing judgment on the house of Ahab, and (K)found the princes of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers who served Ahaziah, that he killed them. 9 (L)Then he searched for Ahaziah; and they caught him (he was hiding in Samaria), and brought him to Jehu. When they had killed him, they buried him, “because,” they said, “he is the son of (M)Jehoshaphat, who (N)sought the Lord with all his heart.”

So the house of Ahaziah had no one to assume power over the kingdom.

Athaliah Reigns in Judah(O)

10 (P)Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs of the house of Judah. 11 But [h]Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took (Q)Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being murdered, and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah so that she did not kill him. 12 And he was hidden with them in the house of God for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.

Ahaziah’s Reign

22 The residents of Jerusalem made his youngest son Ahaziah king in his place, for the raiding party that invaded the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons.[a] So Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah. 2 Ahaziah was twenty-two[b] years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. His mother[c] was Athaliah, the granddaughter[d] of Omri. 3 He followed in the footsteps of Ahab’s dynasty,[e] for his mother gave him evil advice.[f] 4 He did evil in the sight of[g] the Lord like Ahab’s dynasty because, after his father’s death, they[h] gave him advice that led to his destruction. 5 He followed their advice and joined Ahab’s son King Joram[i] of Israel in a battle against King Hazael of Syria[j] at Ramoth Gilead in which the Syrians defeated Joram. 6 Joram[k] returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he received from the Syrians[l] in Ramah when he fought against King Hazael of Syria. Ahaziah[m] son of King Jehoram of Judah went down to visit Joram son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he had been wounded.[n]

7 God brought about Ahaziah’s downfall through his visit to Joram.[o] When Ahaziah[p] arrived, he went out with Joram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had commissioned[q] to wipe out Ahab’s family.[r] 8 While Jehu was dishing out punishment to Ahab’s family, he discovered the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s relatives who were serving Ahaziah and killed them. 9 He looked for Ahaziah, who was captured while hiding in Samaria. They brought him to Jehu and then executed him. They did give him a burial, for they reasoned,[s] “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with his whole heart.” There was no one in Ahaziah’s family strong enough to rule in his place.[t]

Athaliah is Eliminated

10 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she was determined to destroy the entire royal line[u] of Judah.[v] 11 So Jehoshabeath,[w] the daughter of King Jehoram,[x] took Ahaziah’s son Joash and stole him away from the rest of the royal descendants who were to be executed. She hid him and his nurse in the room where the bed covers were stored. So Jehoshabeath the daughter of King Jehoram, wife of Jehoiada the priest and sister of Ahaziah, hid him from Athaliah so she could not execute him. 12 He remained in hiding in God’s temple[y] for six years while Athaliah was ruling over the land.
