Salomo ontvangt zijn wijsheid van God

1 Koning Davids zoon Salomo was nu de onbetwiste leider van Israël, want de Here, zijn God, was met hem en had hem tot een machtig heerser gemaakt. ^2,3Hij riep alle legerofficieren, rechters, politieke en godsdienstige leiders naar Gibeon. Daar aangekomen leidde hij hen de heuvel op naar de oude tabernakel die Mozes, de dienaar van de Here, in de woestijn had gebouwd. ⁴In Jeruzalem bevond zich een nieuwe tabernakel, die koning David bouwde voor de ark toen hij deze uit Kirjat-Jearim had gehaald. ^5,6Het koperen altaar dat Besaleël (de zoon van Uri en kleinzoon van Hur) had gemaakt, stond nog steeds voor de oude tabernakel. Op die plaats verzamelden Salomo en al de mannen die hij had uitgenodigd zich en hij bracht daar brandoffers aan de Here.

⁷Die nacht kwam de Here bij Salomo en zei: ‘Vraag Mij wat u maar wilt en Ik zal het u geven.’ ⁸Salomo antwoordde: ‘O God, U bent goed geweest voor mijn vader David en U hebt mij nu het koningschap gegeven. ⁹Ik heb al meer dan genoeg, want U bent uw belofte aan mijn vader David nagekomen en hebt mij koning gemaakt van een volk dat zo talrijk is als het stof van de aarde. ¹⁰Geef mij daarom wijsheid en inzicht, zodat ik dit volk goed kan regeren. Wie zou immers helemaal op eigen kracht een volk kunnen besturen dat zo groot is als dit volk van U?’ ¹¹God antwoordde: ‘Omdat u het liefst uw onderdanen wilt helpen en Mij niet hebt gevraagd om persoonlijke rijkdom en eer of om de dood van uw vijanden of een lang leven, maar om wijsheid en inzicht om mijn volk goed te leiden, ¹²daarom geef Ik u de wijsheid en het inzicht waar u om vroeg. En Ik geef u bovendien zoveel rijkdom, schatten en eer als geen andere koning voor u heeft gekend. Nooit meer zal er op aarde zoʼn grote koning regeren.’

¹³Na die woorden verliet Salomo de tabernakel, ging de heuvel af, terug naar Jeruzalem om zijn regeringstaak op zich te nemen. ¹⁴Hij bouwde een legermacht op van veertienhonderd strijdwagens en riep twaalfduizend ruiters onder de wapenen om de steden te bewaken waar de strijdwagens waren gestationeerd. Een aantal wagens bleef in Jeruzalem bij de koning. ¹⁵Tijdens Salomoʼs bewind waren in Jeruzalem zilver en goud even overvloedig aanwezig als de stenen op straat. En van kostbaar cederhout waren er zulke hoeveelheden dat men het gebruikte alsof het gewoon hout van de wilde vijgenboom was. ¹⁶Zijn paarden kwamen uit Egypte en Kewé, waar zijn handelaren ze aankochten. ¹⁷In die tijd kostte een Egyptische strijdwagen 66 kilo zilver en een paard 16,5 kilo zilver. Ze werden ook doorverkocht aan de koningen van de Hethieten en Aram.

Solomon Worships at Gibeon

1 ^(A)Solomon the son of David established himself in his kingdom, ^(B)and the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.

²Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the ^(C)commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to all the leaders in all Israel, the heads of fathers' houses. ³And Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to ^(D)the high place that was at Gibeon, ^(E)for ^(F)the tent of meeting of God, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness, was there. ⁴^(G)(But David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place that David had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.) ⁵Moreover, ^(H)the bronze altar that ^(I)Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, had made, was there before the tabernacle of the Lord. And Solomon and the assembly ^(J)sought it^[a] out. ⁶And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the Lord, which was at the tent of meeting, ^(K)and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

Solomon Prays for Wisdom

⁷^(L)In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” ⁸And Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and steadfast love to David my father, ^(M)and have made me king in his place. ⁹O Lord God, ^(N)let your word to David my father be now fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous ^(O)as the dust of the earth. ¹⁰Give me now wisdom and knowledge to ^(P)go out and come in before this people, for who can govern this people of yours, which is so great?” ¹¹God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for ^(Q)possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king, ¹²wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you ^(R)riches, possessions, and honor, ^(S)such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.” ¹³So Solomon came from^[b] the ^(T)high place at Gibeon, from before ^(U)the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem. And he reigned over Israel.

Solomon Given Wealth

¹⁴^(V)Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen. ^(W)He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, whom he stationed ^(X)in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. ¹⁵And the king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stone, and he made cedar as plentiful as the sycamore of the Shephelah. ¹⁶And Solomon's import of horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king's traders would buy them from Kue for a price. ¹⁷They imported a chariot from Egypt for 600 shekels^[c] of silver, and a horse for 150. Likewise through them these were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.
