யோசபாத் போரை எதிர் நோக்கியிருக்கிறான்
20 பிறகு மோவாபிய ஜனங்களும், அம்மோன் ஜனங்களும், சில மியூனிய ஜனங்களும் யோசபாத்துக்கு எதிராகப் போரிடத் தொடங்கினார்கள். 2 சிலர் யோசபாத்திடம் வந்து, “உங்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போரிட ஏதோமிலிருந்து ஒரு பெரும்படை வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. அவர்கள் மரணக் கடலின் மறுகரையில் இருந்து வருகிறார்கள். அவர்கள் ஏற்கெனவே ஆசாசோன் தாமாரில் உள்ளார்கள்!” என்றனர். (ஆசாசோன் தாமார் எங்கேதி என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.) 3 யோசபாத்துக்குப் பயம் ஏற்பட்டது. என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்று கர்த்தரிடம் கேட்கத் தீர்மானித்தான். யூதாவிலுள்ள எல்லோரும் உபவாசம் இருக்க ஒரு நேரத்தைக் குறித்தான். 4 யூதாவிலுள்ள ஜனங்கள் ஒன்று கூடி கர்த்தரிடம் உதவி கேட்டனர். யூதாவின் அனைத்து நகரங்களிலிருந்தும் ஜனங்கள் வந்து கர்த்தருடைய உதவியை வேண்டினார்கள். 5 யோசபாத் கர்த்தருடைய ஆலயத்தில் இருந்தான். அங்கு புதுப்பிரகாரத்திற்கு முன்னால் இருந்தான். யூதாவிலிருந்தும் எருசலேமிலிருந்தும் வந்த ஜனங்கள் கூட்டத்தின் முன்னர் நின்று பேசினான். 6 அவன் சொன்னதாவது:
“எங்கள் முற்பிதாக்களின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தாவே நீர் பரலோகத்திலிருக்கிற தேவன். அனைத்து நாடுகளிலும் உள்ள அரசுகளை நீர் ஆண்டுவருகிறீர். உமக்கு அதிகாரமும் பலமும் உள்ளது. உமக்கு எதிராக எவராலும் நிற்க முடியாது. 7 நீரே எங்களுடைய தேவன். இந்த நிலத்திலிருந்து ஜனங்கள் வெளியேறுமாறு நீர் கட்டாயப்படுத்தினீர். இதனை உம்முடைய இஸ்ரவேல் ஜனங்களின் முன்னிலையிலேயே நீர் செய்தீர். நீர் இந்த நிலத்தை ஆபிரகாமின் சந்ததியினருக்கு எக்காலத்திற்கும் உரியதாக்கினீர். ஆபிரகாம் உமது நண்பர். 8 ஆபிரகாமின் சந்ததியினர் இந்த நிலத்தில் வாழ்ந்தார்கள். உமது நாமத்தால் ஒரு ஆலயத்தைக் கட்டினார்கள். 9 அவர்கள், ‘எங்களுக்கு வாளாலோ, தண்டனையாலோ, நோயாலோ, பஞ்சத்தாலோ துன்பங்கள் வந்தால் நாங்கள் உமது ஆலயத்தின் முன்னால் உமக்கு முன் நிற்போம். உம்முடைய நாமம் இவ்வாலயத்தின் மேல் உள்ளது. நாங்கள் துன்பத்தில் இருக்கும்போது உம்மை நோக்கிச் சத்தமிடுவோம். பின் நீர் அதைக் கேட்டு எங்களைக் காப்பாற்றுவீர்.’
10 “ஆனால் இப்போது, இங்கே அம்மோன், மோவாப், சேயீர் மலை ஆகிய ஜனங்கள் இருக்கின்றனர். இஸ்ரவேலர் எகிப்திலிருந்து வெளியேறி வந்தபோது அவர்களது நிலத்தின் வழியாகச் செல்ல நீர் அனுமதிக்கவில்லை. எனவே இஸ்ரவேல் ஜனங்கள் இவர்களை விட்டு விலகி, அழிக்காமல் போனார்கள். 11 ஆனால் பாரும், நாங்கள் அவர்களை அழிக்காமல் விட்டதற்கு அவர்கள் எங்களுக்குத் தரும் வெகுமதியைப் பாரும். அவர்கள் உம்முடைய நாட்டை விட்டு வெளியேறுமாறு எங்களைக் கட்டாயப்படுத்துகிறார்கள். இந்த நாட்டை நீர் எங்களுக்கு கொடுத்தீர். 12 எங்களுடைய தேவனே, அந்த ஜனங்களைத் தண்டியும். எங்களுக்கு எதிராக வந்திருக்கும் இப்பெரும் படையை எதிர்க்க எங்களிடம் பலம் இல்லை. என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்று எங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. அதனால் நாங்கள் உம்மிடம் உதவியை வேண்டுகிறோம்!” என்றான்.
13 யூதாவிலுள்ள அனைத்து ஜனங்களும் தங்களுடைய மனைவி, குழந்தைகள் மற்றும் பிள்ளைகளுடன் கர்த்தருக்கு முன்னால் நின்றார்கள். 14 பிறகு கர்த்தருடைய ஆவி யகாசியேல் என்பவன் மீது வந்தது. யகாசியேல் சகரியாவின் குமாரன். சகரியா பெனாயாவின் குமாரன். பெனாயா ஏயெலின் குமாரன். ஏயேல் மத்தனியாவின் குமாரன். யகாசியேல் ஒரு லேவியன். இவன் ஆசாபின் சந்ததியான். கூட்டத்தின் நடுவில் 15 யகாசியேல், “நான் சொல்வதைக் கேளுங்கள். யோசபாத் ராஜாவே, யூதா மற்றும் எருசலேமில் உள்ள ஜனங்களே, கர்த்தர் உங்களுக்கு இதனைக் கூறுகிறார்: ‘இப்பெரும் படையைக்கண்டு அஞ்சவோ, கவலைப்படவோ வேண்டாம். ஏனென்றால் இது உங்களுடைய போரல்ல. இது தேவனுடைய போர். 16 நாளை கீழே இறங்கிப்போய் அவர்களோடு சண்டையிடுங்கள். அவர்கள் சிஸ் என்ற மேட்டு வழியாக வருகிறார்கள். அவர்களை நீங்கள் யெருவேல் எனும் வனாந்தரத்திற்கு எதிரான பள்ளத்தாக்கின் முடிவில் சந்திப்பீர்கள். 17 இப்போரில் நீங்கள் சண்டையிடவே வேண்டாம். உங்கள் இடங்களில் உறுதியாக நில்லுங்கள். கர்த்தர் உங்களைக் காப்பாற்றுவதைக் காண்பீர்கள். யூதா நாட்டினரே! எருசலேமியர்களே! அஞ்சாதீர்கள். கவலைப்படாதீர்கள்! கர்த்தர் உங்களோடு இருக்கிறார். எனவே நாளை அவர்களுக்கு எதிராகச் செல்லுங்கள்’ என்றார்” என்று சொன்னான்.
18 யோசபாத் குனிந்து வணங்கினான். அவனது முகம் தரையைத் தொட்டது. யூதாவில் வாழும் ஜனங்களும் எருசலேமில் வாழும் ஜனங்களும் கர்த்தருக்கு முன்பாக தரையில் விழுந்து வணங்கினார்கள். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் கர்த்தரை தொழுதுகொண்டனர். 19 இஸ்ரவேலின் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரை, கோகாத் மற்றும் கேரா ஆகிய கோத்திரத்தில் உள்ள லேவியர்கள் எழுந்து நின்று துதித்தனர். அவர்கள் கர்த்தரை மிகச் சத்தமாகத் துதித்தனர்.
20 அதிகாலையில் யோசபாத்தின் படையானது தெக்கோவா வனாந்தரத்திற்குப் போனது. அவர்கள் புறப்படும்போது யோசபாத் நின்ற வண்ணம், “யூதா மற்றும் எருசலேமில் உள்ள ஜனங்களே! நான் சொல்வதைக் கேளுங்கள். உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரை நம்புங்கள். விசுவாசத்தில் உறுதியாயிருங்கள். கர்த்தருடைய தீர்க்கதரிசிகளை நம்புங்கள். அதனால் வெற்றி பெறுவீர்கள்” என்றான்.
21 பிறகு யோசபாத் ஜனங்களை அறிவுரைகளால் உற்சாகப்படுத்தினான். பின்னர் கர்த்தரைத் துதித்துப் பாடப் பாடகர்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தான். கர்த்தர் பரிசுத்தமும், அற்புதமும் கொண்டவர். இவரைத் துதித்துப் பாடிக் கொண்டே பாடகர்கள் படைக்கு முன்னால் சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள்,
“கர்த்தரைத் துதியுங்கள்,
ஏனென்றால் அவரது அன்பு என்றென்றும் நிலைத்திருக்கும்!” என்று பாடினார்கள்.
22 தேவனை இவர்கள் பாடித் துதிக்கத் தொடங்கியதும், கர்த்தர் அம்மோனியர், மோவாபியர், சேயீர் மலைநாட்டினர் ஆகியோர் மீது ஒரு மறைமுகத் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினார். இவர்களே யூதா நகரின் மேல் போர் தொடுத்து வந்தவர்கள். அவர்கள் அடிக்கப்பட்டார்கள். 23 அம்மோனியர்களும், மோவாபியர்களும் சேர்ந்து சேயீர் மலை நாட்டினர் மீது போரிடத் தொடங்கினார்கள். அம்மோனியர்களும், மோவாபியர்களும் சேயீர் மலை நாட்டினரைக் கொன்று அழித்தார்கள். சேயீர் மலை நாட்டினரைக் கொன்று முடித்த பிறகு தமக்குள்ளாகவே போரிட்டுக் கொல்லத் தொடங்கினார்கள்.
24 யூதா ஜனங்கள் வனாந்தரத்தில் பார்ப்பதற்கு வசதியான ஒரு இடத்திற்கு வந்தனர். அங்கிருந்து அவர்கள் பெரும் படையைக் கவனித்தனர். அவர்கள் செத்துப்போன பிணங்களைத்தான் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. எவரும் அங்கு உயிரோடு இல்லை. 25 யோசபாத்தும் அவனது படையும் வந்து மரித்துப் போனவர்களிடம் இருந்த விலையுயர்ந்த பொருட்களை எடுத்துச்சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள் பல மிருகங்களையும், செல்வங்களையும், ஆடைகளையும் விலையுயர்ந்த பொருட்களையும் கைப்பற்றினார்கள். அவர்கள் அவற்றைத் தமக்கு எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர். அவர்கள் இவ்வாறு விலையுயர்ந்த பொருட்களை மூன்று நாட்களாக கொள்ளையிட்டனர். ஏனென்றால் அவற்றின் அளவு அவ்வளவு மிகுதியாயிருந்தது. 26 நான்காவது நாள் யோசபாத்தும் அவனது படைகளும் பெராக்கா பள்ளத்தாக்கில் கூடினார்கள். அந்த இடத்தில் அவர்கள் கர்த்தரைத் துதித்தனர். எனவே அந்த இடம், “பெராக்கா பள்ளத்தாக்கு” என்று இதுவரையிலும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
27 பிறகு யோசபாத் யூதா மற்றும் எருசலேம் ஜனங்களை எருசலேமிற்குத் திரும்ப அழைத்துக் கொண்டு போனான். அவர்களின் பகைவர்கள் அழிக்கப்பட்டதால் அவர்களைக் கர்த்தர் மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு வைத்தார். 28 அவர்கள் எருசலேமிற்குத் தம்புருக்களோடும், சுரமண்டலங்களோடும், எக்காளங்களோடும் வந்து கர்த்தருடைய ஆலயத்திற்குச் சென்றனர்.
29 அனைத்து நாடுகளிலும் உள்ள அனைத்து அரசுகளும் கர்த்தருக்கு அஞ்சினார்கள். ஏனென்றால் அவை இஸ்ரவேலின் எதிரிகளோடு கர்த்தர் போரிட்டதைப் பற்றி கேள்விப்பட்டனர். 30 அதனால் யோசபாத்தின் அரசாங்கம் சமாதானமாக இருந்தது. யோசபாத்தின் தேவன் அவனைச் சுற்றிலும் சமாதானத்தைத் தந்தார்.
யோசபாத் ஆட்சியின் முடிவு
31 யோசபாத் யூதா நாடு முழுவதையும் அரசாண்டான். இவன் ஆளத்தொடங்கும்போது இவனுக்கு வயது 35, இவன் எருசலேமில் 25 ஆண்டுகள் ஆண்டான். இவனது தாயின் பெயர் அசுபாள். இவள் சில்கியின் குமாரத்தி. 32 யோசபாத் தனது தந்தை ஆசாவைப் போன்று சரியான வழியில் வாழ்ந்தான். அவன் ஆசாவின் வழியைப் பின்பற்றுவதில் இருந்து மாறவில்லை. கர்த்தருடைய பார்வையில் நல்லவற்றையேச் செய்தான். 33 ஆனால் மேடைகள் அகற்றப்படவில்லை. தம் முற்பிதாக்கள் பின்பற்றிய தேவனைப் பின்பற்றுவதற்காக ஜனங்கள் தங்களுடைய இருதயத்தைத் திருப்பவில்லை. 34 யோசபாத் செய்த மற்ற செயல்களைப் பற்றி தொடக்கம் முதல் இறுதிவரை உள்ளவற்றைப் பற்றி ஆனானியின் குமாரனாகிய யெகூவின் ஆவணங்களில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளன. பிரதி செய்யப்பட்டு, இஸ்ரவேல் ராஜாக்களின் வரலாறு என்னும் புத்தகத்தில் இவை சேர்க்கப்பட்டன.
35 பிறகு யூதாவின் ராஜாவாகிய யோசபாத் இஸ்ரவேல் ராஜாவாகிய அகசியாவோடு ஒரு ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துக்கொண்டான். அகசியா தீமைச் செய்தான். 36 யோசபாத் அகசியோவோடு சேர்ந்து கொண்டு தர்ஷீசுக்குச் செல்ல கப்பல் கட்டினான். அவர்கள் கப்பல்களை எசியோன் கேபேரிலே கட்டினார்கள். 37 பிறகு எலியேசர் யோசபாத்துக்கு எதிராகப் பேசினான். எலியேசரின் தந்தை பெயர் தொதொவா. எலியேசர் மரேசா ஊரினன். அவன், “யோசபாத், நீ அகசியாவோடு சேர்ந்துவிட்டாய். அதனால்தான் கர்த்தர் உனது வேலைகளை அழிப்பார்” என்றான். கப்பல்கள் நொறுங்கிப்போயின. அதனால் யோசபாத்தும், அகசியாவும் தம் ஆட்களை தர்ஷீசுக்கு அனுப்பமுடியாமல் போயிற்று.

Une armée ennemie marche sur Juda – la prière de Josaphat
20 Par la suite, les Moabites et les Ammonites[a] renforcés par des Maonites[b] se mirent en route pour faire la guerre à Josaphat. 2 On vint prévenir Josaphat en ces termes : Une vaste armée est en train de marcher contre toi d’au-delà de la mer Morte et d’Edom[c]. Elle a déjà atteint Hatsatsôn-Tamar (c’est-à-dire Eyn-Guédi).
3 Josaphat prit peur et décida de consulter l’Eternel. Il proclama un jeûne pour tout Juda, 4 et les Judéens se rassemblèrent pour implorer le secours de l’Eternel. Ils vinrent de toutes les villes de Juda. 5 Josaphat se tint debout avec l’assemblée des gens de Juda et de Jérusalem dans le temple de l’Eternel, en face du nouveau parvis. 6 Il pria ainsi : Eternel, Dieu de nos ancêtres, n’es-tu pas Dieu, habitant dans le ciel, et n’est-ce pas toi qui domines sur tous les royaumes des peuples ? Tu disposes de force et de puissance ! Nul ne peut te résister. 7 N’est-ce pas toi, notre Dieu, qui as chassé les anciens habitants de ce pays pour faire place à ton peuple Israël, et qui as donné ce pays pour toujours aux descendants d’Abraham, ton ami qui t’aimait[d] ? 8 Ils s’y sont établis, ils y ont construit un sanctuaire en ton honneur. Puis ils ont dit : 9 « Si un malheur s’abat sur nous : une guerre, un châtiment, une épidémie ou la famine, nous viendrons nous tenir devant ce temple, devant toi, puisque ta présence est établie dans ce sanctuaire, et du fond de notre détresse, nous implorerons ton secours ; alors tu écouteras et tu sauveras[e] ! » 10 Eh bien, maintenant, voici que les Ammonites, les Moabites et les habitants des monts de Séir viennent nous attaquer. Quand Israël venait d’Egypte[f], tu ne lui as pas permis de traverser le pays de ces gens-là et il a fait un détour ; il ne les a pas détruits. 11 Et voilà comment ils nous récompensent : ils viennent nous chasser de la propriété que tu nous as attribuée. 12 Notre Dieu, n’exerceras-tu pas tes jugements sur eux ? Car nous sommes impuissants pour résister à cette immense armée qui vient nous attaquer et nous ne savons que faire, mais nous tournons nos regards vers toi.
13 Tout Juda, femmes et enfants y compris, se tenait debout devant l’Eternel.
La prophétie de Yahaziel
14 Alors l’Esprit de l’Eternel vint sur Yahaziel, fils de Zacharie, descendant de Benaya, de Yeïel et de Mattania, un lévite de la lignée d’Asaph[g], au milieu de l’assemblée. 15 Yahaziel dit : Soyez attentifs, vous tous qui habitez Juda et Jérusalem, et toi aussi, roi Josaphat ! Voici ce que vous déclare l’Eternel : « Ne craignez rien et ne vous laissez pas effrayer devant cette immense armée, car cette guerre n’est pas votre affaire, c’est celle de Dieu. 16 Demain matin, marchez contre eux. Ils vont gravir la montée de la Fleur. Vous les rencontrerez au bout du défilé à l’entrée du désert de Yerouel[h]. 17 Vous n’aurez même pas à combattre ; contentez-vous de prendre position et de vous tenir là : vous verrez l’Eternel vous accorder la délivrance. Gens de Juda et de Jérusalem, ne craignez rien et ne vous laissez pas effrayer ! Demain, marchez à leur rencontre, et l’Eternel sera avec vous[i] ! »
18 Josaphat se prosterna le visage contre terre et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem se laissèrent tomber devant l’Eternel et se prosternèrent devant lui. 19 Alors les lévites qehatites et qoréites[j] se levèrent pour louer l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, en chantant d’une voix très forte.
La délivrance
20 Le lendemain matin, ils se levèrent tôt, et les hommes se mirent en route pour le désert de Teqoa[k]. Au moment du départ, Josaphat leur adressa la parole : Ecoutez-moi, hommes de Juda et habitants de Jérusalem ! Faites confiance à l’Eternel votre Dieu, et vous serez invulnérables ! Faites confiance à ses prophètes, et vous aurez la victoire !
21 Il s’était concerté avec le peuple et avait placé en tête de l’armée des musiciens pour louer l’Eternel et la majesté de sa sainte personne. Ils se mirent en route devant les soldats en armes en chantant :
Louez l’Eternel,
car son amour ╵dure à toujours.
22 Au moment où ils entonnèrent leurs cantiques de louange, l’Eternel plaça une embuscade contre les Ammonites, les Moabites et les habitants des monts de Séir qui venaient attaquer Juda, de sorte qu’ils furent battus. 23 Les Ammonites et les Moabites se dressèrent contre les habitants des monts de Séir et les exterminèrent. Quand ils en eurent terminé avec eux, ils se jetèrent les uns sur les autres, jusqu’à s’anéantir.
24 Lorsque les Judéens parvinrent au promontoire d’où l’on apercevait le désert, ils regardèrent du côté de leurs ennemis et ils ne virent que des cadavres jonchant le sol : il n’y avait aucun rescapé.
25 Josaphat et son armée allèrent s’emparer du butin ; ils trouvèrent en abondance toutes sortes de biens, des vêtements[l] et des objets précieux. Ils en ramassèrent une telle quantité qu’ils ne purent tout emporter. Ils restèrent trois jours à piller le butin tant il était abondant. 26 Le quatrième jour, ils s’assemblèrent dans la vallée de la Bénédiction où ils bénirent l’Eternel ; c’est pourquoi on a appelé cet endroit vallée de la Bénédiction, nom qu’il porte encore aujourd’hui.
27 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem reprirent joyeusement le chemin de la ville, Josaphat en tête, car l’Eternel les avait remplis de joie en les délivrant de leurs ennemis. 28 Ils arrivèrent à Jérusalem au son des luths, des lyres et des trompettes et se rendirent au temple de l’Eternel. 29 Tous les autres peuples furent frappés de terreur à cause de l’Eternel lorsqu’ils apprirent comment il avait combattu les ennemis d’Israël. 30 Dès lors, le royaume de Josaphat jouit de la tranquillité et son Dieu lui assura la paix sur toutes ses frontières.
La fin du règne de Josaphat – alliance coupable et échec(A)
31 Ainsi régna Josaphat sur Juda. Il était âgé de trente-cinq ans à son avènement, et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Azouba, elle était fille de Shilhi. 32 Il suivit l’exemple de son père Asa sans en dévier, en faisant ce que l’Eternel considère comme juste. 33 Cependant, les hauts lieux ne disparurent pas : le peuple n’avait toujours pas attaché fermement son cœur au Dieu de ses ancêtres.
34 Les autres faits et gestes de Josaphat, des premiers aux derniers, sont cités dans les Actes de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, qui ont été insérés dans le livre des rois d’Israël.
35 Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, s’allia avec Ahazia, roi d’Israël, dont la conduite n’était pas conforme à la volonté de Dieu. 36 Ils se mirent ensemble pour construire des navires au long cours. Ils fabriquèrent ces navires dans le port d’Etsyôn-Guéber. 37 Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodavahou, de Marésha, adressa à Josaphat la prophétie suivante : Parce que tu t’es allié à Ahazia, l’Eternel va détruire tes réalisations.
Effectivement, les navires furent brisés avant d’avoir pu atteindre Tarsis[m].

20 It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.
3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the Lord: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.
5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court,
6 And said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,
9 If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.
10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.
12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
13 And all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the Lord in the midst of the congregation;
15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.
16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.
18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the Lord, worshipping the Lord.
19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice on high.
20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever.
22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.
26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the Lord: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.
27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the Lord had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the Lord.
29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the Lord fought against the enemies of Israel.
30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.
31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the Lord.
33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.
35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongaber.
37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the Lord hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

Moab and Ammon Are Defeated
20 Some time later, the armies of Moab and Ammon, together with the Meunites,[a] went to war against Jehoshaphat. 2 Messengers told Jehoshaphat, “A large army from Edom[b] east of the Dead Sea has invaded our country. They have already reached En-Gedi.”[c]
3 Jehoshaphat was afraid, so he asked the Lord what to do. He then told the people of Judah to go without eating to show their sorrow. 4 They immediately left for Jerusalem to ask for the Lord's help.
5 After everyone from Judah and Jerusalem had come together at the Lord's temple, Jehoshaphat stood in front of the new courtyard 6 and prayed:
You, Lord, are the God our ancestors worshiped, and from heaven you rule every nation in the world. You are so powerful that no one can defeat you. 7 (A) Our God, you forced out the nations who lived in this land before your people Israel came here, and you gave it to the descendants of your friend Abraham forever. 8 Our ancestors lived in this land and built a temple to honor you. 9 They believed that whenever this land is struck by war or disease or famine, your people can pray to you at the temple, and you will hear their prayer and save them.
10 (B) You can see that the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Edom are attacking us! Those are the nations you would not let our ancestors invade on their way from Egypt, so these nations were not destroyed. 11 Now they are coming to take back the land you gave us. 12 Aren't you going to punish them? We won't stand a chance when this army attacks. We don't know what to do—we are begging for your help.
13 While every man, woman, and child of Judah was standing there at the temple, 14 the Lord's Spirit suddenly spoke to Jahaziel, a Levite from the Asaph clan.[d] 15 (C) Then Jahaziel said:
Your Majesty and everyone from Judah and Jerusalem, the Lord says that you don't need to be afraid or let this powerful army discourage you. God will fight on your side! 16 So here's what you must do. Tomorrow the enemy armies will march through the desert around the town of Jeruel. March down and meet them at the town of Ziz as they come up the valley. 17 (D) You won't even have to fight. Just take your positions and watch the Lord rescue you from your enemy. Don't be afraid. Just do as you're told. And as you march out tomorrow, the Lord will be there with you.
18 Jehoshaphat bowed low to the ground and everyone worshiped the Lord. 19 Then some Levites from the Kohath and Korah clans stood up and shouted praises to the Lord God of Israel.
20 Early the next morning, as everyone got ready to leave for the desert near Tekoa, Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Listen my friends, if we trust the Lord God and believe what these prophets have told us, the Lord will help us, and we will be successful.” 21 Then he explained his plan and appointed men to march in front of the army and praise the Lord for his holy power by singing:[e]
“Praise the Lord!
His love never ends.”
22 As soon as they began singing, the Lord confused the enemy camp, 23 so that the Ammonite and Moabite troops attacked and completely destroyed those from Edom. Then they turned against each other and fought until the entire camp was wiped out!
24 When Judah's army reached the tower that overlooked the desert, they saw that every soldier in the enemy's army was lying dead on the ground. 25 So Jehoshaphat and his troops went into the camp to carry away everything of value. They found a large herd of livestock,[f] a lot of equipment, clothes,[g] and other valuable things. It took them three days to carry it all away, and there was still some left over.
26 Then on the fourth day, everyone came together in Beracah Valley and sang praises to the Lord. That's why that place was called Praise Valley.[h]
27-28 Jehoshaphat led the crowd back to Jerusalem. And as they marched, they played harps and blew trumpets. They were very happy because the Lord had given them victory over their enemies, so when they reached the city, they went straight to the temple.
29 When the other nations heard how the Lord had fought against Judah's enemies, they were too afraid 30 to invade Judah. The Lord let Jehoshaphat's kingdom be at peace.
Jehoshaphat Dies
(1 Kings 22.41-50)
31 Jehoshaphat was 35 years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled from Jerusalem for 25 years. His mother was Azubah daughter of Shilhi. 32 Jehoshaphat obeyed the Lord, just as his father Asa had done, 33 but he did not destroy the local shrines.[i] So the people still worshiped foreign gods, instead of faithfully serving the God their ancestors had worshiped.
34 Everything else Jehoshaphat did while he was king is written in the records of Jehu son of Hanani that are included in The History of the Kings of Israel.
35 While Jehoshaphat was king, he signed a peace treaty with Ahaziah the wicked king of Israel. 36 They agreed to build several seagoing ships[j] at Ezion-Geber. 37 But the prophet Eliezer[k] warned Jehoshaphat, “The Lord will destroy these ships because you have supported Ahaziah.” The ships were wrecked and never sailed.
