De zonen van Jawan waren Elisa, Tarsisa, de Kittieten en de Rodanieten. De zonen van Cham waren Kus, Misraïm, Put en Kanaän. De zonen van Kus waren Seba, Chawila, Sabta, Rama en Sabtecha. De zonen van Rama waren Seba en Dedan. 10 Nimrod, die later een beroemde held werd, was ook een zoon van Kus. 11 De families die naar de zonen van Misraïm werden genoemd, waren de Ludieten, de Anamieten, de Lehabieten, 12 de Naftuhieten, de Pathrusieten, de Kashluhieten, de voorvaders van de Filistijnen, en de Kaftorieten. 13 Onder Kanaäns zonen bevonden zich ook zijn oudste zoon Sidon 14 en Heth. Kanaän was tevens de voorvader van de Jebusieten, de Amorieten, de Girgasieten, 15 de Chiwwieten, de Arkieten, 16 de Sinieten, de Arwadieten, de Semarieten en de Hamatieten. 17 De zonen van Sem waren Elam, Assur, Arfachsad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether en Mesech. 18 Arfachsads zoon was Selach en Selachs zoon was Eber. 19 Eber had twee zonen: Peleg, die zo heette omdat tijdens zijn leven de aarde werd verdeeld, en zijn broer Joktan. 20 De zonen van Joktan waren Almodad, 21 Selef, Chasarmawet, Jerah, Hadoram, 22 Uzal, Dikla, Ebal, Abimaël, 23 Seba, Ofir, Chawila en Jobab. 24 De zoon van Sem was Arfachsad, de zoon van Arfachsad was Selach, 25 de zoon van Selach was Eber, 26 de zoon van Eber was Peleg, de zoon van Peleg was Reü, de zoon van Reü was Serug, de zoon van Serug was Nachor, 27 de zoon van Nachor was Terach, de zoon van Terach was Abram, die later Abraham werd genoemd.

28 Abrahams zonen waren Isaak en Ismael. 29 De zonen van Ismaël waren Nebajot, de oudste, Kedar, 30 Adbeël, Mibsam, Misma, Duma, Massa, Hadad, Tema, 31 Jetur, Nafis en Kedema. 32 Abraham kreeg ook zonen van zijn bijvrouw Ketura. Dat waren achtereenvolgens Zimran, Joksan, Medan, Midjan, Jisbak en Suach. Joksans zonen waren Seba en Dedan. 33 De zonen van Midjan waren Efa, Efer, Henoch, Abida en Eldaä. Dit waren de nakomelingen die Abrahams bijvrouw Ketura hem gaf.

34 Abrahams zoon Isaak had twee zonen: Esau en Israël. 35 De zonen van Esau waren Elifaz, Reüel, Jeüs, Jalam en Korach. 36 De zonen van Elifaz waren Teman, Omar, Zefi, Gaëtam, Kenaz, Timna en Amalek. 37 De zonen van Reüel waren Nahat, Zerach, Samma en Mizza. 38 Tot de zonen van Esau behoorden tevens Lotan, Sobal, Sibon, Ana, Dison, Ezer en Disan. Lotans zonen waren: Chori en Homam. 39 Lotan had ook nog een zuster, die Timna heette. 40 De zonen van Sobal waren Aljan, Manahath, Ebal, Sefi en Onam. Sibons zonen waren Ajja en Ana. 41 De zoon van Ana was Dison en deze Dison had de volgende zonen: Hamran, Esban, Jitran en Keran. 42 De zonen van Ezer waren Bilhan, Zaäwan en Jaäkan. Disan had twee zonen: Uz en Aran.

43 Hier volgen de namen van de koningen van Edom, die regeerden voordat een koning over Israël regeerde: Bela, de zoon van Beor, die in de stad Dinhaba woonde. 44 Na de dood van Bela werd Jobab, de zoon van Zerach uit Bosra, de nieuwe koning. 45 Toen Jobab stierf, volgde Husam uit de streek van de Temanieten, hem op. 46 Na diens dood werd Hadad, de zoon van Bedad, koning. Hij regeerde vanuit de stad Awit. Hij was het die het leger van Midjan in de velden van Moab versloeg. 47 Na de dood van Hadad, besteeg Samla uit Masreka de troon. 48 Na Samlaʼs overlijden kwam Saul uit de aan de rivier gelegen stad Rechobot aan de macht. 49 Toen Saul stierf, stond Baäl-Hanan, de zoon van Achbor, klaar om hem op te volgen. 50 Na de dood van Baäl-Hanan werd Hadad koning en regeerde vanuit de stad Pahi. Zijn vrouw heette Mehetabel, zij was een dochter van Matred en een kleindochter van Me-Zahab. 51-54 Na Hadads dood waren de volgende mannen de stamhoofden van Edom: Timna, Alja, Jetet, Oholibama, Ela, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, Magdiël en Iram.

De nakomelingen van Israël

1,2 De zonen van Israël waren Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar, Zebulon, Dan, Jozef, Benjamin, Naftali, Gad en Aser. Juda kreeg drie zonen bij Bath-Sua, een meisje uit Kanaän: Er, Onan en Sela. Zijn oudste zoon Er was echter zo goddeloos dat de Here hem doodde. Toen werden Ers weduwe Tamar en haar schoonvader Juda ouders van de tweeling Peres en Zerach. Zo had Juda in totaal vijf zonen. De zonen van Peres waren Hezron en Hamul. De vijf zonen van Zerach waren Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol en Dara. Achar, de zoon van Karmi, was de man die zich toeëigende wat van de Here was en daardoor zijn volksgenoten grote moeilijkheden bezorgde. Ethan had slechts één zoon, Azarja.

De zonen van Hezron waren Jerachmeël, Ram en Kelubai. 10 Ram was de vader van Amminadab en Amminadab was de vader van Nachson, een leider van Israël. 11 Nachson was de vader van Salma en Salma was de vader van Boaz. 12 Boaz was de vader van Obed en Obed was op zijn beurt de vader van Isaï. 13 Isaïʼs eerste zoon was Eliab, zijn tweede zoon was Abinadab, zijn derde Simea, 14 zijn vierde Netanel, zijn vijfde Raddai, 15 zijn zesde Ozem en zijn zevende zoon was David. 16 Hun zusters waren Zeruja en Abigaïl. Zerujaʼs drie zonen waren Abisaï, Joab en Asaël. 17 Abigaïl was getrouwd met een zekere Jether uit het geslacht van Ismaël, haar zoon was Amasa.

18 Hezrons zoon Kaleb had twee vrouwen, Azuba en Jerioth. Dit waren hun zonen: Jeser, Sobab en Ardon. 19 Na de dood van Azuba trouwde Kaleb met Efrat en bij haar kreeg hij een zoon, die zij Hur noemden. 20 Hurs zoon was Uri en Uriʼs zoon was Besaleël. 21 Hezron trouwde toen hij zestig jaar was met Machirs dochter en zij bracht een zoon ter wereld: Segub. Machir was tevens de vader van Gilead. 22 Segub was de vader van Jaïr, die drieëntwintig steden in het gebied Gilead in bezit had. 23 Maar Gesur en Aram namen hem die steden af, evenals Kenat met de zestig omliggende dorpen. 24 Kort na de dood van Hezron, in Kaleb-Efrata, baarde zijn vrouw Abia Ashur, de vader van Tekoa.

25 Dit waren de zonen van Jerachmeël, de oudste zoon van Hezron: Ram, de oudste, Buna, Oren, Ozem en Ahia. 26 Jerachmeëls tweede vrouw Atara was de moeder van Onam. 27 De zonen van Ram waren Maäz, Jamin en Eker. 28 Onams zonen waren Sammai en Jada. Sammai ʼs zonen waren Nadab en Abisur. 29 De zonen van Abisur en zijn vrouw Abihaïl waren Achban en Molid. 30 Nadabs zonen waren Seled en Appaïm. Seled stierf kinderloos, 31 maar Appaïm had een zoon, Jiseï genaamd. Jiseïʼs zoon heette Sesan en Sesans zoon was Achlai. 32 Sammaiʼs broer Jada had twee zonen, Jether en Jonathan. Jether stierf kinderloos, 33 maar Jonathan had twee zonen, Pelet en Zaza. 34 Sesan had geen zonen, maar wel enkele dochters. Eén van zijn dochters huwelijkte hij uit aan zijn Egyptische dienaar Jarha. 35 Zij kregen een zoon, die zij Attai noemden. 36 Attaiʼs zoon was Nathan, Nathans zoon was Zabad, 37 Zabads zoon was Eflal, Eflals zoon was Obed, 38 Obeds zoon was Jehu, Jehuʼs zoon was Azarja, 39 Azarjaʼs zoon was Helez, Helezʼ zoon was Elasa, 40 Elasaʼs zoon was Sismai, Sismaiʼs zoon was Sallum, 41 Sallums zoon was Jekamja en Jekamjaʼs zoon was Elisama.

42 De oudste zoon van Kaleb, Jerachmeëls broer, was Mesa, hij was de vader van Zif, die op zijn beurt de vader van Maresa was. Deze Maresa was de vader van Hebron. 43 De zonen van Hebron waren Korach, Tappuah, Rekem en Sema. 44 Sema was de vader van Raham, die op zijn beurt de vader van Jorkeam was. Rekem was de vader van Sammai. 45 Sammaiʼs zoon was Maon, de vader van Bet-Zur. 46 Kalebs bijvrouw Efa bracht Haran, Moza en Gazez ter wereld. Haran had een zoon, die eveneens Gazez heette. 47 De zonen van Johdai waren Regem, Jotham, Gesan, Pelet, Efa en Saäf. 48,49 Een andere bijvrouw van Kaleb, Maächa, bracht de volgende zonen ter wereld: Seber, Tirhana, Saäf, de vader van Madmanna, en Seva, de vader van Machbena en Gibea. Kaleb had ook een dochter, die Achsa heette. 50 De zonen van Hur, de oudste zoon van Kaleb en Efrata, waren: Sobal, de vader van Kirjat-Jearim, 51 Salma, de vader van Bethlehem, en Haref, de vader van Bet-Gader. 52 Sobal, de vader van Kirjat-Jearim, had een zoon, Haroë genaamd, de voorvader van de halve stam van Menuchoth. 53 De families van Kirjat-Jearim waren: de Jethrieten, de Puthieten, de Sumathieten en de Misraïeten, van wie de Zorathieten en de Esthaolieten afstammen. 54 De nakomelingen van Salma waren de familie van Bethlehem, de Netofathieten, de inwoners van Atroth-Bet-Joab, de helft van de Manathieten en de Zorieten, 55 hiertoe behoorden ook de families van de schrijvers die in Jabez woonden: de Tirathieten, de Simeathieten en de Suchathieten. Al deze mensen behoren tot de Kenieten, die afstamden van Hamath, de stamvader van het huis Rechab.

48 When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the river[p] succeeded him as king.

49 When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Akbor succeeded him as king.

50 When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau,[q] and his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab. 51 Hadad also died.

The chiefs of Edom were:

Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 52 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 53 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 54 Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.

These were the sons of Israel:

Er, Onan and Shelah.(AH) These three were born to him by a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua.(AI) Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.(AJ) Judah’s daughter-in-law(AK) Tamar(AL) bore Perez(AM) and Zerah to Judah. He had five sons in all.

Hezron(AO) and Hamul.

The sons of Zerah:

Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol and Darda[r]—five in all.

The son of Karmi:

Achar,[s](AP) who brought trouble on Israel by violating the ban on taking devoted things.[t](AQ)

The son of Ethan:

Azariah.

The sons born to Hezron(AR) were:

10 Ram(AS) was the father of

Amminadab(AT), and Amminadab the father of Nahshon,(AU) the leader of the people of Judah. 11 Nahshon was the father of Salmon,[v] Salmon the father of Boaz, 12 Boaz(AV) the father of Obed and Obed the father of Jesse.(AW)

13 Jesse(AX) was the father of

Eliab(AY) his firstborn; the second son was Abinadab, the third Shimea, 14 the fourth Nethanel, the fifth Raddai, 15 the sixth Ozem and the seventh David. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah(AZ) and Abigail. Zeruiah’s(BA) three sons were Abishai, Joab(BB) and Asahel. 17 Abigail was the mother of Amasa,(BC) whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite.

Caleb Son of Hezron

18 Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah (and by Jerioth). These were her sons: Jesher, Shobab and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb(BD) married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. 20 Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri the father of Bezalel.(BE)

21 Later, Hezron, when he was sixty years old, married the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead.(BF) He made love to her, and she bore him Segub. 22 Segub was the father of Jair, who controlled twenty-three towns in Gilead. 23 (But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth Jair,[w](BG) as well as Kenath(BH) with its surrounding settlements—sixty towns.) All these were descendants of Makir the father of Gilead.

24 After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, Abijah the wife of Hezron bore him Ashhur(BI) the father[x] of Tekoa.

Jerahmeel Son of Hezron

25 The sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron:

Ram his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem and[y] Ahijah. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.

27 The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel:

Maaz, Jamin and Eker.

28 The sons of Onam:

Shammai and Jada.

The sons of Shammai:

Nadab and Abishur.

29 Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, who bore him Ahban and Molid.

30 The sons of Nadab:

Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.

31 The son of Appaim:

Ishi, who was the father of Sheshan.

Sheshan was the father of Ahlai.

32 The sons of Jada, Shammai’s brother:

Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without children.

33 The sons of Jonathan:

Peleth and Zaza.

These were the descendants of Jerahmeel.

34 Sheshan had no sons—only daughters.

He had an Egyptian servant named Jarha. 35 Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai.

36 Attai was the father of Nathan,

Nathan the father of Zabad,(BJ)

37 Zabad the father of Ephlal,

Ephlal the father of Obed,

38 Obed the father of Jehu,

Jehu the father of Azariah,

39 Azariah the father of Helez,

42 The sons of Caleb(BK) the brother of Jerahmeel:

Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph, and his son Mareshah,[z] who was the father of Hebron.

43 The sons of Hebron:

Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. 44 Shema was the father of Raham, and Raham the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai. 45 The son of Shammai was Maon(BL), and Maon was the father of Beth Zur.(BM)

46 Caleb’s concubine Ephah was the mother of Haran, Moza and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.

47 The sons of Jahdai:

Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.

48 Caleb’s concubine Maakah was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah. 49 She also gave birth to Shaaph the father of Madmannah(BN) and to Sheva the father of Makbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Aksah.(BO) 50 These were the descendants of Caleb.

The sons of Hur(BP) the firstborn of Ephrathah:

Shobal the father of Kiriath Jearim,(BQ) 51 Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth Gader.

52 The descendants of Shobal the father of Kiriath Jearim were:

Haroeh, half the Manahathites, 53 and the clans of Kiriath Jearim: the Ithrites,(BR) Puthites, Shumathites and Mishraites. From these descended the Zorathites and Eshtaolites.

54 The descendants of Salma:

Bethlehem, the Netophathites,(BS) Atroth Beth Joab, half the Manahathites, the Zorites, 55 and the clans of scribes[aa] who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. These are the Kenites(BT) who came from Hammath,(BU) the father of the Rekabites.[ab](BV)
