5 Филистимляне же взяли ковчег Божий и принесли его из Авен-- Езера в Азот.
2 И взяли Филистимляне ковчег Божий, и внесли его в храм Дагона, и поставили его подле Дагона.
3 И встали Азотяне рано на другой день, и вот, Дагон лежит лицем своим к земле пред ковчегом Господним. И взяли они Дагона и опять поставили его на свое место.
4 И встали они поутру на следующий день, и вот, Дагон лежит ниц на земле пред ковчегом Господним; голова Дагонова и обе руки его [лежали] отсеченные, каждая особо, на пороге, осталось только туловище Дагона.
5 Посему жрецы Дагоновы и все приходящие в капище Дагона в Азот не ступают на порог Дагонов до сего дня.
6 И отяготела рука Господня над Азотянами, и Он поражал их и наказал их мучительными наростами, в Азоте и в окрестностях его.
7 И увидели это Азотяне и сказали: да не останется ковчег Бога Израилева у нас, ибо тяжка рука Его и для нас и для Дагона, бога нашего.
8 И послали, и собрали к себе всех владетелей Филистимских, и сказали: что нам делать с ковчегом Бога Израилева? И сказали: пусть ковчег Бога Израилева перейдет в Геф. И отправили ковчег Бога Израилева в Геф.
9 После того, как отправили его, была рука Господа на городе--ужас весьма великий, и поразил Господь жителей города от малого до большого, и показались на них наросты.
10 И отослали они ковчег Божий в Аскалон; и когда пришел ковчег Божий в Аскалон, возопили Аскалонитяне, говоря: принесли к нам ковчег Бога Израилева, чтоб умертвить нас и народ наш.
11 И послали, и собрали всех владетелей Филистимских, и сказали: отошлите ковчег Бога Израилева; пусть он возвратится в свое место, чтобы не умертвил он нас и народа нашего. Ибо смертельный ужас был во всем городе; весьма отяготела рука Божия на них.
12 И те, которые не умерли, поражены были наростами, так что вопль города восходил до небес.

Ковчег у филистимлян
5 Захватив ковчег Бога, филистимляне принесли его из Эвен-Езера в Ашдод. 2 Затем они внесли ковчег в храм Дагона[a] и поставили около Дагона. 3 Когда жители Ашдода встали на другой день рано утром, Дагон, упавший лицом на землю, лежал перед ковчегом Господа! Они подняли Дагона и вернули на прежнее место. 4 Но на следующее утро, когда они встали, Дагон опять лежал лицом на земле, перед ковчегом Господа! Его голова и руки были отломаны и валялись на пороге, целым осталось лишь туловище. 5 Вот почему до сегодняшнего дня ни жрецы Дагона, ни входящие в его храм в Ашдоде не наступают на порог, где он лежал.
6 Господь сурово наказал жителей Ашдода и его окрестностей[b], наслав на них опустошение[c] и поразив их наростами[d]. 7 Когда жители Ашдода увидели то, что происходит, они сказали:
– Ковчег израильского Бога не должен находиться здесь у нас, потому что гнев Его против нас и нашего бога Дагона страшен.
8 Они созвали всех филистимских правителей и спросили их:
– Что нам делать с ковчегом израильского Бога?
Жители Гата ответили:
– Пусть ковчег израильского Бога переправится в Гат.
И переправили ковчег Бога Израиля. 9 Но после того, как они переправили его в Гат, рука Господа обратилась и против этого города, приведя его в великий ужас. Он поразил жителей города, молодых и старых, наростами. 10 И они отослали ковчег Бога в Экрон. Когда ковчег Бога вносили в Экрон, жители кричали:
– Ковчег израильского Бога принесли к нам, чтобы погубить нас и наш народ!
11 Они созвали всех филистимских правителей и сказали:
– Отошлите ковчег израильского Бога! Пусть он вернется на свое место, иначе он[e] умертвит нас и наш народ.
Смерть наполнила тот город ужасом. Божий гнев на него был очень страшен. 12 Те, кто не умер, были поражены наростами, и вопль города доходил до небес.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
