Treatment of Church Members
5 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.
Honor True Widows
3 Honor widows who are really widows. 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and (A)to repay their parents; for this is [a]good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers (B)night and day. 6 But she who lives in [b]pleasure is dead while she lives. 7 And these things command, that they may be blameless. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, (C)and especially for those of his household, (D)he has denied the faith (E)and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, 10 well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.
11 But [c]refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, 12 having condemnation because they have cast off their first [d]faith. 13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 14 Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some have already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any believing [e]man or woman has widows, let them [f]relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.
Honor the Elders
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18 For the Scripture says, (F)“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, (G)“The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except (H)from two or three witnesses. 20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.
21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the [g]elect angels that you observe these things without (I)prejudice, doing nothing with partiality. 22 Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor (J)share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.
23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent [h]infirmities.
24 Some men’s sins are (K)clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.

5 Einen älteren Mann fahre nicht hart an, sondern ermahne ihn wie einen Vater, jüngere wie Brüder,
2 ältere Frauen wie Mütter, jüngere wie Schwestern, in aller Keuschheit[a].
Von den Witwen in der Gemeinde
3 Ehre die Witwen, die wirklich Witwen sind.[b]
4 Wenn aber eine Witwe Kinder oder Enkel hat, so sollen diese zuerst lernen, am eigenen Haus gottesfürchtig zu handeln und den Eltern Empfangenes zu vergelten; denn das ist gut und wohlgefällig vor Gott.
5 Eine wirkliche und vereinsamte Witwe aber hat ihre Hoffnung auf Gott gesetzt und bleibt beständig im Flehen und Gebet Tag und Nacht;
6 eine genusssüchtige jedoch ist lebendig tot.
7 Sprich das offen aus, damit sie untadelig sind!
8 Wenn aber jemand für die Seinen, besonders für seine Hausgenossen[c], nicht sorgt, so hat er den Glauben verleugnet und ist schlimmer als ein Ungläubiger.
9 Eine Witwe soll nur in die Liste eingetragen werden,[d] wenn sie nicht weniger als 60 Jahre alt ist, die Frau eines Mannes war
10 und ein Zeugnis guter Werke hat; wenn sie Kinder aufgezogen, Gastfreundschaft geübt, die Füße der Heiligen gewaschen, Bedrängten geholfen hat, wenn sie sich jedem guten Werk gewidmet hat.
11 Jüngere Witwen aber weise ab; denn wenn sie gegen [den Willen des] Christus begehrlich geworden sind, wollen sie heiraten
12 und kommen [damit] unter das Urteil, dass sie die erste Treue gebrochen ha- ben.
13 Zugleich lernen sie auch untätig zu sein, indem sie in den Häusern herumlaufen; und nicht nur untätig, sondern auch geschwätzig und neugierig zu sein; und sie reden, was sich nicht gehört.
14 So will ich nun, dass jüngere [Witwen] heiraten, Kinder gebären, den Haushalt führen und dem Widersacher keinen Anlass zur Lästerung geben;
15 denn etliche haben sich schon abgewandt, dem Satan nach.
16 Wenn ein Gläubiger oder eine Gläubige Witwen hat, so soll er sie versorgen, und die Gemeinde soll nicht belastet werden, damit diese für die wirklichen Witwen sorgen kann.
Die richtige Haltung gegenüber den Ältesten
17 Die Ältesten, die gut vorstehen, sollen doppelter Ehre[e] wertgeachtet werden, besonders die, welche im Wort und in der Lehre arbeiten.
18 Denn die Schrift sagt: »Du sollst dem Ochsen nicht das Maul verbinden, wenn er drischt!«[f], und »Der Arbeiter ist seines Lohnes wert«[g].
19 Gegen einen Ältesten nimm keine Klage an, außer aufgrund von zwei oder drei Zeugen.
20 Die, welche sündigen, weise zurecht vor allen, damit sich auch die anderen fürchten.
21 Ich ermahne dich ernstlich vor Gott und dem Herrn Jesus Christus und den auserwählten Engeln, dass du dies ohne Vorurteil befolgst und nichts aus Zuneigung tust!
22 Die Hände lege niemand schnell auf, mache dich auch nicht fremder Sünden teilhaftig; bewahre dich selbst rein!
Persönliche Ratschläge an Timotheus
23 Trinke nicht mehr nur Wasser, sondern gebrauche ein wenig Wein um deines Magens willen und wegen deines häufigen Unwohlseins.
24 Die Sünden mancher Menschen sind allen offenbar und kommen vorher ins Gericht; manchen aber folgen sie auch nach.
25 Gleicherweise sind auch die guten Werke allen offenbar; und die, mit welchen es sich anders verhält, können auch nicht verborgen bleiben.

Widows, Elders and Slaves
5 Do not rebuke an older man(A) harshly,(B) but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men(C) as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.(D) 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents,(E) for this is pleasing to God.(F) 5 The widow who is really in need(G) and left all alone puts her hope in God(H) and continues night and day to pray(I) and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.(J) 7 Give the people these instructions,(K) so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied(L) the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,(M) such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,(N) washing the feet(O) of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble(P) and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies(Q) who talk nonsense,(R) saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry,(S) to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.(T) 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.(U)
16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.(V)
17 The elders(W) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,(X) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a](Y) and “The worker deserves his wages.”[b](Z) 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder(AA) unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.(AB) 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove(AC) before everyone, so that the others may take warning.(AD) 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus(AE) and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands,(AF) and do not share in the sins of others.(AG) Keep yourself pure.(AH)
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine(AI) because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.
